For serious gamefowl breeders and poultry keepers, molt isn't just a downtime — it's a genetic checkpoint and a vital phase that shapes your birds' future health, performance, and breeding value. Yet many breeders unknowingly sabotage this crucial period with one common misstep: dropping protein and cutting weight too aggressively. In this episode, we break down: What actually happens during the molt — physically, nutritionally, and behaviorally The risks of underfeeding fit birds during feather regrowth Why dropping protein and forcing weight loss can lead to brittle feathers, extended molt duration, weakened immunity, and long-term performance decline Smart, supportive strategies to help your birds recover fast and come back stronger How proper molt management preserves your bloodline's resilience, immune strength, and conditioning foundation Whether you're aiming to maintain show-quality birds or prepare top-performing gamefowl for next season, understanding how to feed, condition, and support your flock during molt is non-negotiable. This isn't just a feeding issue — it's a breeding strategy. Key Takeaway: Don't starve your birds to "reset" them — support them to rebuild stronger. Feed smart. Condition wisely. Breed for resilience. Let the molt reveal the strength of your line — not the weaknesses of your management. Make sure to follow and watch our future shows. We plan to dive deep into the world of breeding and genetics, nutrition and health management, and provide essential tips, so you too can create high quality strains. Whether you're breeding domestic chickens, gamefowl, or various types of livestock, this show is for you. Join us on Bred to Perfection Live, Friday's at 6pm PST or 9pm EST on YouTube, as we discuss the benefits of creating your own strain. See ya there! Today's guest is Petter Törnberg, who with Justus Uitermark is one of the authors of a new book, titled Seeing Like a Platform: An Inquiry into the Condition of Digital Modernity, that sets out to address the “entanglement of epistemology, technology, and politics in digital modernity,” and what studying that entanglement can tell us about the workings of power. The book is part of a part of a series of research monographs that intend to encourage social scientists to embrace a “complex systems approach to studying the social world.”
Philip Hoffman is here to share his journey from CPA to investing in fine art. He founded The Fine Art Group, where he advises wealthy families on art investing, valuations, lending, and education. He outlines the global art market as a $60 billion industry with only $6–10 billion considered truly investable, highlights the risks and pitfalls of treating art as an asset class without expert guidance, and shares cautionary tales of investors losing millions by buying discounted works without due diligence, contrasted with success stories where expertise and timing led to strong returns. We discuss... Philip Hoffman began his career as a CPA at KPMG, later became CFO and youngest board director at Christie's, and eventually founded The Fine Art Group. His firm advises wealthy families across 28 countries on art transactions, valuations, education, and art-backed lending. Investable art includes high-value works, jewelry, vintage cars, and luxury items like Hermès handbags, while most antiques and collectibles fall outside this category. Investors can access art through funds, private credit against art, direct ownership, or syndication with others. Hoffman emphasizes that art buyers should use reputable advisors, much like when purchasing real estate, to avoid costly mistakes. A client once spent $4 million on 40 polo paintings by an unknown artist with no resale market, ultimately finding them worthless. Using an advisor costs a fraction of an artwork's price but can prevent costly mistakes. Even seasoned collectors often misjudge valuations; in one example, most experts mistook a $1M Monet for a $10M Monet. Condition issues, provenance gaps, and theft risks make professional due diligence essential in high-value purchases. Current market conditions—with top-tier art down 20–30% from recent highs—make this one of the best times in decades to buy blue-chip works. Wealthy collectors often allocate about 5% of their portfolio to art, balancing enjoyment with investment. The black market exists, but high-profile stolen works are nearly impossible to sell through reputable channels. Damage usually devastates value, though rare cases like Banksy's shredded artwork increased in worth due to notoriety. Mishandling in storage, shipping, or moving can ruin artworks, highlighting the importance of professional logistics. Over decades, disciplined art investors with good advisors typically achieve strong compounded returns comparable to or exceeding equities. A new Australian study, published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, suggests that Monday fatigue and mood swings may be linked to a newly identified condition called “social apnoea.” Drawing on data from more than 70,000 participants, the study suggests that obstructive sleep apnoea tends to worsen over weekends. While the exact cause remains uncertain, the study acknowledges certain limitations.

'Seeing Like a Platform: An Inquiry into the Condition of Digital Modernity (Taylor & Francis, 2025)' by Petter Törnberg & Justus Uitermark In my conversation with Petter Törnberg about Seeing Like a Platform, we kept returning to a simple but unsettling point: platforms don't just carry our messages or connect us to information. They've created an entirely new way of knowing the world. His book with Justus Uitermark argues that when everything must be tagged, ranked, and fed through recommendation engines, we get a reality that only makes sense through those mechanisms. This goes beyond previous technological shifts. The printing press expanded what we could know. Television changed how quickly we could know it. But platforms have altered the conditions of knowledge itself. When a platform "sees" the world, it only recognizes what can be counted, sorted, and optimized. Everything else becomes invisible or, worse, stops seeming real. We start mistaking the map for the territory, except now the map is writing itself based on our clicks and swipes. What troubles me most about Törnberg's analysis is how naturally we've adapted to this new epistemology. We optimize our research for algorithmic discovery. We think in terms of engagement rather than understanding. The platform's logic becomes so embedded in daily life that other ways of organizing knowledge start to feel antiquated, inefficient. For STS researchers, this creates a genuine bind: we're trying to study platform society while swimming in its assumptions. The challenge isn't escaping platform thinking but remembering that there are other ways to think. For an estimated 5 million Americans, every beat of their heart can be heard in their ears as a constant "whooshing" sound making it difficult to sleep or concentrate and contributing to anxiety and depression. The condition is known as pulsatile tinnitus or P-T. Those who treat people with P-T say the condition can go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed due to its rarity and the difficulty in determining the underlying cause. On Wednesday's “Sound of Ideas” we will meet a local woman who developed the condition and the doctor who used a surgical procedure to help reduce most, but not all of the noise she was hearing. Also on the show, up first, we talk about the current labor dispute at a locally owned coffee chain and the recent closure of a café in Lakewood. Why are coffee shops currently flashpoints in the larger discussion regarding worker's and unionization? Finally, the Tennis in the Land tournament returns this weekend to the Flats. The tournament is now in its fifth year and brings to Cleveland some of the up and coming stars of the professional women's tennis tour. We'll talk to the tournament director about this year's event and plans.
