In this powerful episode, Mike Meldman — real estate mogul, co-founder of Casamigos Tequila, and founder of Discovery Land Company — shares the remarkable story behind his journey from instinct-driven entrepreneur to one of the most influential figures in luxury real estate and lifestyle branding. Mike dives deep into how Casamigos, a tequila brand originally created with George Clooney “just for fun,” skyrocketed from a personal project to a billion-dollar business — despite having no plans for mass distribution. From there, he walks us through the origin and explosive growth of Discovery Land Company, a visionary take on private communities built around service, family, and meaningful experiences — not just golf. One of his standout projects, Kukio in Hawaii, started with an underwhelming plot of lava rock but became one of the most successful resort communities in the U.S., selling $50 million worth of real estate in just 90 days. Mike reveals how a courthouse bidding war with Mitsubishi, unconventional thinking, and meticulous attention to member experience helped make Kukio what it is today. But his ambition didn't stop there. Mike also discusses his 7.5% ownership stake in the Las Vegas Raiders, the importance of choosing the right people to surround yourself with, and how he's used strategic investments in companies like Vuori (valued today at $7 billion) to expand his brand's reach far beyond real estate. He speaks candidly about the challenges he's faced — including the emotional toll of two failed marriages — and reflects on what truly matters: family, discipline, integrity, and giving back. Through the Discovery Land Company Foundation, Mike supports children's charities and community development around each of his projects, making sure that luxury living doesn't come at the cost of social impact. This episode is more than a conversation — it's a blueprint for anyone who wants to build something iconic from scratch, stay grounded while chasing massive success, and leave behind a legacy that matters. Why do we build walls—emotional, social, ideological—and what would it take to break them down? In this thought-provoking episode of Uncomfy, anthropologist Anand Pandian joins host Julie Rose to explore the infrastructure of discomfort in America. Drawing from his new book, “Something Between Us: The Everyday Walls of American Life and How to Take Them Down,” Pandian recounts stories from his journey across America, including attending a Trump victory rally as a liberal, or choosing to reconnect with a conservative childhood friend. These experiences reveal how fear and familiarity shape our comfort zones and what happens when we choose to step beyond them. A couple of weeks ago we hit the 12 year mark in our grief. 12 years without Jackson. Without Tyler and Trey. 12 years since we got “the phone call” and so many lives were forever changed. 12 years on this painful journey. And, it still hurts. It's still hard. Sometimes I think, “of course our hearts still hurt”, and other times I'm completely surprised by it. As I've said before, these set apart dates on the calendar that bring our heartache and grief right back up to the surface, and mark the passing of time without our son, are daunting - the lead up to the day, fumbling through the actual day, and then the weariness of soul in the days and weeks to follow…it's all just plain exhausting, even now in the second decade of our loss. In light of this, and as a way to bring Season 7 of the podcast to an official close, I wanted to come on and share a little bit from my heart - a grief update, of sorts. Proof of life. Testimony of God's continued care and healing. Things we continue to learn. And more insight into what is helpful during these tougher times of the year. I'm so glad you found this episode. Thank you for taking the time to listen. In many ways, it's like we are sitting down for coffee today. Or out on a walk…and you ask, “What's your grief been like lately?” An unscripted hour of hearing me share about what my personal fight for joy feels like now in hopes of encouraging you to keep pressing forward in your own journey, or to continue walking with your grieving friends. Also, don't forget that as a Fighting for Joy listener you can receive 10% off of your first month of counseling services from BetterHelp, my podcast sponsor. In the Waiting Have you ever found yourself in a waiting room—physically or spiritually? At first, you lean in with hope. Then comes frustration, comparison, and passivity. The prophet Habakkuk knew that tension. His raw cry—“How long, Lord, must I call for help?”—echoes in every season of delay. In this message, we unpack how God doesn't silence our questions—He meets us in them. Habakkuk reminds us: real transformation starts when we stop performing and start trusting. Whether you're leaning forward or slumped in silence, this message calls you to wait well—with faith, conviction, and hope. Habakkuk Discussion topics Icebreaker - Have you ever experienced a "spiritual waiting room"? What did it feel like—anticipation, frustration, doubt, resignation? In what ways do you relate to the imagery of leaning forward, sitting back, looking around, or slipping into a passive posture? Read Habakkuk 1:2-4 - What stood out to you about Habakkuk's honesty in his prayer to God? How do you typically respond when it seems like God is silent in the face of injustice or suffering? Living in a Christian Nation - With such a high percentage of elected officials identifying as Christian, why do you think society still reflects so many of the problems Habakkuk described in his time? What does it mean for us personally to “not ignore the Torah”—or to return to God's truth in our cultural moment? NOTE- This is not a time to debate politics or get off on personal political agendas. Read Habakkuk 2:4 & 3:17-18 - What does it look like to live by faith when your circumstances haven't changed? What would it mean for you to “rejoice in the Lord” this week, even when the “fig tree does not bud”? Personal Reflection & Action: Which posture do you find yourself in today—leaning forward, sitting back, looking around, or giving up? What's one small, faithful action you can take this week to choose trust over passivity? In this episode, I dive into the latest drama from "Sister Wives," particularly the mixed reactions to part four of the tell-all reunion, where fans felt a sense of finality as Kody and the wives expressed their reluctance to continue with polygamy. I share my thoughts on the proposed storylines for season 20 from Screen Rant, including the idea of Kody and David going on a guys' trip and Meri helping out at Janelle's Tayda Farms. Additionally, I discuss the ongoing legal battle between Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, and I open up about my own fertility journey as I prepare for my egg donor transfer, explaining the process and my excitement about this new chapter. As always, I invite listeners to engage with their thoughts on "Sister Wives" and any sister-in-law dilemmas they might have for an upcoming episode. In a culture that increasingly downplays masculinity and the traditional family, Hanson calls for a reevaluation of fatherhood—not as an optional accessory, but as a cornerstone of moral courage, responsibility, and strength on today's episode of "Victor Davis Hanson: In His Own Words." “ One of the roles of fathers is to give young children, especially males, a sense of direction. And almost this tragic sense that sometimes you have to do things that you don't want to do, but somebody else won't do them, you're going to be in trouble. “To the degree this country will make it, it will be a strong father figure that instructs us how to be masculine. How to be a man. How to protect the weak. How to stand forward and challenge bullies, that prey on the weak and the innocent. And that's a lost art now. 00:00 Introduction to Father's Day 00:54 Personal Reflections on Father's Day 01:37 Lessons from My Father 01:56 Stories of My Father's Support 05:15 The Role of Fathers in Society 06:22 Conclusion and Final Thoughts
This conversation marks the beginning of a deeper inquiry for Dr. John Vervaeke: What if pilgrimage is not a retreat from the world, but a return to what is most real? Joined by Ethan Hsieh, John explicates his intent to preregister his intellectual and philosophical orientation before beginning his metaphorical pilgrimage. Drawing on parallels with psychology's preregistration practice, John's aim is to document his internal state at various stages of his journey. The conversation delves deep into the concepts of theoria, theophany, and theosis, advocating for a pilgrimage that is not merely a lecture series but a 'meta-noetic passage.' The dialogue anticipates John's encounters with historical figures, sages, and the individuals who embody and interpret their legacy. John expresses his openness to how these encounters might transform him, acknowledging the potential psychological and physiological challenges involved. The dialogue also touches upon themes of the imaginal and the importance of community and fellowship in the pilgrimage process. Ethan contributes by drawing connections to broader themes of perception and philosophical inquiry. The conversation culminates in the hope that this philosophical and spiritual journey will not only deepen John's understanding but also inspire others to embark on their own explorative journeys. —- Notes: (00:00) Introduction to the Philosophical Silk Road (00:30) The Concept of Preregistration in Philosophy (01:00) Defining the Pilgrimage and Its Purpose (02:00) Introducing Ethan and the Dialogical Approach (04:30) Exploring the Original Orientation (05:30) The Challenge of Propositional Tyranny (07:00) Theoria and Theophany: Renewing the Senses (13:30) Meta Noetic Passage and Pilgrimage (20:00) Engaging with Sages and Geographical Perspectives (24:00) Personal Challenges and Psychological Defects (31:30) The Fellowship of the Pilgrimage (33:00) Interlocutors and Sages: A Deeper Dive (54:00) Introduction to Theosis (55:00) Historical Continuity and Henosis (56:00) Henosis and Kenosis in Christian Mysticism (57:30) The Paradox of Self-Transcendence (01:00:30) Theosis and Inner Athea (01:05:30) Personal Reflections and Burnout (01:09:00) The Concept of Unbinding (01:11:00) Non-Theism and Theism (01:25:00) Pilgrimage and Transformation (01:38:30) Reflections on Personal Growth (01:48:00) Concluding Thoughts and Future Questions If you would like to donate purely out of goodwill to support John's work, please consider joining our Patreon. Our teacher today is Will Thorndike, co-founder of Compounding Labs and author of the acclaimed book, “The Outsiders.” In our opinion, Will has emerged as one of the most influential and innovative investor minds of the past few decades. And if you care about long-term value creation and the art of capital allocation, chances are you've also benefited from some of his ideas. In 1994, he founded Housatonic Partners, a pioneering private equity firm known for its unusually long holding periods and its leadership in the search fund space alongside his mentor and Stanford professor Irv Grousbeck. Will helped to originate the modern search fund model, backing early career CEOs to buy and grow businesses with long-term horizons and radically aligned incentives. Since then, he has invested in the majority of the top 20 search fund outcomes to date, including Asurion, which he recently profiled on his podcast 50X. We explore Will's full arc from the research that led to “The Outsiders” to his decades as an investor to the new frontier he's now helping to shape. We talk about what makes a business truly enduring, why great leadership and resource allocation remain so misunderstood, and how the right people, structure, and alignment enable companies to compound over time. Please enjoy this class with Will Thorndike.
