In Matthew 20:20-24, the mother of James and John asked Jesus to allow her sons to sit at Jesus' right and left hand in His kingdom. This request, and their assertion that they were able to 'drink the cup' that Jesus was to drink reveals they did not grasp the suffering that Christ was about to endure.
