Dr. Martin Shaw on February 4, 2026 at the Lumen Christi Institute. In his newly published _Liturgies of the Wild_, acclaimed mythographer and storyteller Martin Shaw argues that we live in a myth-impoverished age and that such poverty has left us vulnerable to stories that may not wish us well. Drawing on the “ancient technologies” of myths and initiatory rites, Shaw provides a road to wholeness, maturity and connection. In this event for UChicago students, Dr. Shaw explores both the theory and practice of mythmaking. In the first section Shaw guides us through myth's relationship to initiation rites and oral storytelling, explaining these “ancient technologies.” In the second we tilt directly into the telling of an Irish fairy tale, The Birth of Ossian. Drawing on his experience as a professor and widely respected storyteller, Shaw locates us in the deeper dimensions of how a modern person approaches an ancient story.

Focus on: One main character One core problem or moment One change by the end If you can summarize your story in one sentence, you're on the right track. Give Your Character a Want Every scene should revolve around what the character wants right now: To escape To prove themselves To protect someone To uncover the truth Conflict comes from something standing in the way of that want. Show Change, Not Just Events By the end of the story, something should be different: The character has learned something The world has changed A belief is broken or reinforced Even quiet stories need an emotional shift. Let the Setting Do Story Work Your setting should actively affect the plot: Magic behaves differently at night A city is built on forbidden ground The forest remembers those who enter If the story could happen anywhere, the setting isn't pulling its weight. Use Specific Details Strong stories come from concrete details, not vague descriptions: “A chipped blue mug” beats “a cup” “The smell of wet leather” beats “a bad smell” One or two sharp details per scene is enough. End With Meaning, Not Fireworks Fantasy endings don't need giant battles. Strong endings often include: A sacrifice A quiet victory A revealed truth A cost paid The best endings feel inevitable in hindsight. Don't Aim for Perfect—Aim for Finished Your first draft is allowed to be messy. Finishing stories teaches you more than endlessly polishing the opening paragraph. A great habit: write to the end, then revise. Revise With Purpose When revising, ask: Does every scene matter? Can I cut anything without harming the story? Is the ending earned? Short stories often improve most by cutting, not adding. Simple Fantasy Short Story Formula (Beginner-Friendly) A character wants something Magic complicates it The character must choose The world or character changes That's it. Everything else is flavor. Story Ideas A mercenary company discovers their employer is a Dragon Highlord—and must choose between gold and conscience. An apprentice of the Tower of High Sorcery fails their Test—not catastrophically, but quietly—and must live with what was taken instead. A disgraced Knight of Solamnia hides his past while protecting a caravan—until his old order comes calling. A plainsfolk storyteller realizes their oral history will die with them unless they entrust it to an outsider. An artifact from before the Cataclysm resurfaces, but using it may doom the fragile balance of the new world. A widow casts her knight-husband's armor into a river sacred to Habbakuk—and something answers. St. Paul and his companions begin the second letter to the Thessalonians in grace and peace from the one true God. It is right for them to be thankful for this Christian congregation because their faith is growing and their love is increasing. This remains true even as they endure persecution and affliction for the sake of Christ. The apostle assures the Thessalonians that this does not mean that they have been separated from God's kingdom, but instead, they are counted among the members of God's kingdom. Together, they are waiting for the revealing of the Lord Jesus and His judgment upon all those who do not obey the Gospel. St. Paul thus prays for the Thessalonians, that God would keep them faithful and Jesus would be glorified in them.  Rev. Samuel Wirgau, pastor at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Ossian, IN, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study 2 Thessalonians 1:1-12.  To learn more about Bethlehem in Ossian, visit bethlehemossian.org. “Yearning for the Day of Christ's Returning” is a mini-series on Sharper Iron that studies St. Paul's two epistles to the Thessalonians. Although Paul's time in Thessalonica was brief, he had great affection for the Christians there. His two letters to the Thessalonians show us the joy that God gives us together in the Church and encourage us to live faithfully in expectation of Jesus' coming on the Last Day.  Sharper Iron, hosted by Rev. Timothy Appel, looks at the text of Holy Scripture both in its broad context and its narrow detail, all for the sake of proclaiming Christ crucified and risen for sinners. Bizarre Love Triangle. Week 34: Goethe's The Sorrows of Young Werther

Adventure On Deck

This week we leave the Middle Ages far behind and land squarely in the emotional whirlwind of Romanticism with Goethe's The Sorrows of Young Werther. Written in 1774 when Goethe was just twenty-five, the novel became what might be the first true worldwide bestseller—so influential that young men across Europe dressed like Werther, and suicides even spiked in imitation of his tragic end.Werther himself is…a lot. His passion for Charlotte—who is engaged, then married, to another man—spirals into obsession. When he realizes life without her is unbearable, he stages an elaborate, melodramatic exit: visiting friends for final goodbyes, embracing Charlotte while they read Ossian together (a scene straight out of Inferno's Francesca and Paolo), and then borrowing her husband's pistols to kill himself. The ending is bleak, as it should be.Goethe's writing is wonderfully accessible, but Werther's self-indulgent emotionalism reveals the contradictions of early Romanticism: exalting nature and feeling while refusing the grounding work of actual life. Still, this novel opens a door into the powerful reaction against Enlightenment rationalism—a door we'll walk through next week with the Romantic poets. Things are about to accelerate.LINKTed Gioia/The Honest Broker's 12-Month Immersive Humanities Course (paywalled!)My Amazon Book List (NOT an affiliate link)CONNECTThe complete list of Crack the Book Episodes: https://cheryldrury.substack.com/p/crack-the-book-start-here?r=u3t2rTo read more of my writing, visit my Substack - https://www.cheryldrury.substack.com.Follow me on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/cldrury/ LISTENSpotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/5GpySInw1e8IqNQvXow7Lv?si=9ebd5508daa245bdApple Podcasts - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/crack-the-book/id1749793321 Captivate - https://crackthebook.captivate.fm

2014 marked the bicentenary of the birth of the Russian novelist and poet Mikhail Lermontov. A book, After Lermontov, featured a number of the Russian's poems translated into English. Many of the poets involved are Scottish because Lermontov traced his ancestry back to Scotland and was a great admirer of Ossian and Sir Walter Scott. This podcast from 2014 looks at After Lermontov in the company of its editor and contributors: Peter France, Robert Crawford, Sasha Dugdale and Alexander Hutchison. We also take a look at the short, turbulent life of the poet, a controversial figure in his day who may have been the victim of a fatal conspiracy at the age of 27. The LORD called Hosea to preach to the northern kingdom, Israel, during times that were prosperous economically but horrific theologically. The first part of Hosea's book centers on the LORD's command for Hosea to marry a wife of whoredom, Gomer. Through Hosea's marriage, the LORD provides a living sermon of the relationship between Himself and Israel. The names given to the three children of Hosea and Gomer all initially preach against the idolatry of Israel, and yet, the LORD will later turn the meanings of these names on their head to give His Gospel promises of His faithfulness.  Rev. Sam Wirgau, pastor at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Ossian, IN, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Hosea 1:1-11. To learn more about Bethlehem Lutheran, visit bethlehemossian.org. “Majoring in the Minors” is a mini-series on Sharper Iron that goes through the books of Hosea, Joel, Jonah, Micah, and Nahum. Although the books of these prophets are shorter, the Word of God they preached was important in the years leading up to the coming of the Christ, and that Word remains important for the Church today. Just as we still need to listen to their call to repentance over our idolatry, so we still need to heed their call to trust in the Savior, Jesus.  Sharper Iron, hosted by Rev. Once again, Isaiah preaches against the arrogance of His own people. They think that they can build back better after His judgment, but His anger is not turned away. They did not turn back to the LORD after He struck them, and so His anger is not turned away. In wickedness, the people of God fight against themselves, and so His anger is not turned away. Finally, the LORD declares woe on His iniquitous people and asks them a poignant question: “What will you do on the day of punishment? To whom will you flee for help?” Though the people fail to see it in their unbelief, the only right answer is, “The LORD. He alone is the saving refuge.”  Rev. Sam Wirgau, pastor at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Ossian, IN, joins host Rev. Rev. Sam Wirgau, pastor at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Ossian, IN joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Luke 17:11-19. Samaria was not a place where many Jews of Jesus' day ventured, but that is exactly the route Jesus took to Jerusalem and His cross. There Jesus encountered ten lepers. These men not only suffered greatly physically from this terrible illness. Even more than that, they were separated from their community and worship life through the ceremonial uncleanness they endured. This served as a picture of the sin that infects all people. That's why these ten lepers cry out to Jesus for mercy, His grace and compassion that alone can heal and save. Jesus sends them to show themselves to the priest, and as they go, His Word effects healing. One recognizes what has happened and believes. He returns to Jesus as the true Temple, the place where God dwells in human flesh. He returns to Jesus as the true Priest, the one who makes the final sacrifice for sin. He praises God by giving praise and thanks to Jesus. The Lord marvels at the faith of this Samaritan. Though he had been a foreigner, by faith, he is now a citizen of Jesus' heavenly kingdom. Jesus calls him to join Him on the journey of discipleship with Him, holding onto the faith that has made him well. This text invites us to do far more than simply make sure we go back to Jesus to tell Him, “Thank you,” as some sort of formality. Instead, this text calls us to the same faith as that one leper, recognizing that Jesus is the one true God in our human flesh to whom belongs all our praise and thanks for His gift of cleansing from sin. This program originally aired November 29, 2019. Sharper Iron, hosted by Rev. In Zechariah's sixth vision, he sees an enormous scroll with writing on both sides. This Word from God convicts the people of their sin and goes out over all the whole earth; no one will escape the Law's condemnation. Only in Christ will the curse be removed. In Zechariah's seventh vision, he sees a basket with a heavy leaden lid, holding in a woman named “Wickedness.” This provides a picture of the folly of idolatry. False gods are nothing more than tiny statues, easily contained. By carrying the basket away, the LORD shows that He will put an end to the idolatrous iniquity of His people and restore them to the true worship of Himself.  Rev. Sam Wirgau, pastor at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Ossian, IN, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Zechariah 5:1-11.  "The Post-Exilic Prophets” is a series on Sharper Iron that goes through the books of Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi. Through the preaching of these faithful men, the LORD sent His Word to His people who returned home after their exile in Babylon. Not only did the LORD encourage His people in the work of rebuilding the temple, but even more than that, He pointed them forward to the fulfillment of all the Old Testament promises in the coming kingdom of our true King and great High Priest, Jesus Christ.

The LORD has repeatedly declared that He alone knows and accomplishes what will come in the future. He provides further evidence of that reality by naming the Persian king, Cyrus, over one hundred years ahead of time. Through Cyrus, the LORD will deliver His people from Babylon, so that all would know that the LORD alone is God. He is the One who guides and directs all things, even when His ways are hidden. Yet, where the LORD has revealed Himself, His people cling to Him there and trust in His salvation. Rev. Sam Wirgau, pastor at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Ossian, IN, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Isaiah 44:24-45:25. "The Fifth Evangelist” is a series on Sharper Iron that goes through Isaiah 40-66. Though Isaiah lived one hundred years beforehand, he writes to the people of God in exile in Babylon to assure them that their God reigns and will rescue them through the work of His servant. These promises are fulfilled in Jesus Christ, whose work Isaiah proclaims vividly seven hundred years beforehand.

Rev. Sam Wirgau, pastor at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Ossian, IN, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study 2 Corinthians 1:1-7. St. Paul begins this letter to the Corinthians by identifying himself as a true apostle of Jesus Christ who has been sent by God's will. He writes again to Corinth with that authority to continue to proclaim the truth of Christ crucified and risen. Through this preaching, God brings His comfort to His people in the midst of affliction. As His people share in Christ's suffering, so they share in Christ's comfort, so that they can turn and bring comfort to others who are in affliction. St. Paul and his coworkers have endured all this for the sake of the Corinthians, that they would share in God's comfort. “A Letter of Comfort” is a series on Sharper Iron that goes through the epistle of 2 Corinthians. St. Paul writes again to the Christians in Corinth to bring them the ongoing comfort of the Gospel in the midst of the attacks of false doctrine from so-called “super apostles.” He seeks to give confidence to the Corinthians—and to us—that the good news of Christ crucified and risen proclaimed by His called ministers will accomplish all that He intends.

Today I spoke to Blindboy Boatclub – a multi-disciplinary Irish artist and author of the recently published short story collection Topographia Hibernica, a tongue-in-cheek update to the original. Blindboy exploded onto the international scene in late 2010 with his band The Rubberbandits and segued into a weekly podcast which is a cultural phenomenon, with over 1.2 million monthly listeners. He has released three critically acclaimed short story collections and this is his latest one. I thoroughly enjoyed Topographia Hibernica and its absurd, empathetic depictions of contemporary Irish society, flora and fauna. If you're a fan of dynamic short stories with a hard & modern edge, this will appeal to you. Tonally, it's gritty, subversive, and slightly surreal, and narrows in on the way we relate to animals and the natural world in modern culture. Above all, many of the stories are funny. There was something in the energy here that reminded me of early short stories by the Scottish writer Irvine Welsh. The book is a relatively easy read – not lighthearted, but still accessible – and its thematic threads of animal kingdoms interacting with elements of contemporary mythology holds the collection together in a really coherent way.  This episode features an extremely wide-reaching conversation, dipping in and out of Irish folklore, Hiberno English, the impending collapse in global biodiversity, Hieronymus Bosch, creating art with ‘fire in your veins', and a plethora of other fascinating topics. What shines through our conversation most apparently is the remarkable breadth of Blindboy's knowledge, and the all-consuming way he approaches creative pursuits. Incredibly informed and interested in the world around him, he's an artist in the truest sense of the word. Lit with Charles loves reviews. If you enjoyed this episode, I'd be so grateful if you could leave a review of your own, and follow me on Instagram at @litwithcharles. Let's get more people listening – and reading! Books mentioned in the episode: During the episode, Blindboy talked about the Argentinian horror short story collection, The Dangers of Smoking in Bed by Mariana Enríquez (2021); Dance Move, by Wendy Erskine (2022), an eclectic collection of stories set in Belfast; A Shock, by Keith Ridgeway (2021), a subversive novel exploring the absurdity of contemporary London life; The Wounded Cormorant and Other Stories by Liam O'Flaherty (1973), a compassionate portrayal of Irish nature; and Neuromancer, by William Gibson (1984), a genre-forming cyberpunk novel. His favourite book that I've probably never heard of was Ossian's Ride, by Fred Hoyle (1951), a sci-fi detective novel, where Ireland has become a technological superpower. The best book he's read in the last 12 months was Homesick for Another World, by Ottessa Moshfegh (2017), a collection of 14 short stories, most of which were originally published in The Paris Review.  The book he would take to a Desert Island would be The Third Policeman, by Flann O'Brien (1967) a dark, surrealist murder mystery set in a village police force. Finally, a book that changed his mind is The Dead, which is the final, novella-length, story from James Joyce's collection Dubliners (1914). Lit with Charles loves reviews. Rev. Sam Wirgau, pastor at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Ossian, IN, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Hebrews 6:13-20. The author of Hebrews brings up Abraham particularly as one to imitate in faith and patience. Yet this example focuses less on Abraham's actions and more on God's promises. Not only did God make a promise to Abraham after He provided a sacrifice in place of Isaac, but God even swore an oath by Himself. God's Word on its own is already entirely certain, yet for the sake of our continued encouragement to hold fast, He makes an oath to give His people double certainty that He will do all that He says. This gives us a firm anchor that will not fail, knowing that Jesus is our high priest forever in the order of Melchizedek. “The New Covenant in Christ” is a series on Sharper Iron that goes through the book of Hebrews. The book of Hebrews is best understood as a sermon preached to those who have gathered for the Divine Service, exhorting them to continued faithfulness to Jesus. As the Son of God and our Brother, Jesus is both our exalted King and faithful High Priest who is truly present with us so that we might fix our eyes on Him.

Rev. Sam Wirgau, pastor at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Ossian, IN, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Ecclesiastes 4:4-16. Solomon sees the vanity in toil that is done only out of envy, yet he also sees the vanity of laziness that leads to want. Rather than living in such vanity, wisdom is found in considering the purpose of working for others. Using several images, Solomon shows that two people are better than one, both in the return for their work and in their companionship. Yet true Christian wisdom is found when Christ Himself is bound to us as our Brother. “Wisdom for Life Under the Sun” is a series on Sharper Iron that goes through the book of Ecclesiastes. Solomon's favorite word in Ecclesiastes paints a bleak picture: “Vanity of vanities! All is vanity!” Apart from God, life is nothing but vapor that does not last and can never be grasped. Yet Solomon does not leave us in despair. He shows us that life does have meaning in the faith and fear of God, from whom all things come to us as a gift.

Rev. Sam Wirgau, pastor at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Ossian, IN, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Revelation 13:11-18. The dragon finds another ally in his war against the Church in the beast from the land. This second beast has an appearance that mimics the Lamb, indicating that this beast represents those religious forces that attack the Church through false doctrine. This second beast deceives the world to worship the first beast through religious lies and marks all false worshipers as belonging to it. Since Christians have been marked as God's in Holy Baptism, they are not marked as belonging to the beast, and they suffer from it. Yet the Lord is faithful in preserving those whom He has marked as His own; Christians do not need to fear the mark or the number of the beast. “Come Lord Jesus!” is a series on Sharper Iron that goes through the Revelation given to St. John. Although some look at Revelation with fear, it is a book of supreme hope in our crucified, risen, and ascended Lord. The book of Revelation gives a heavenly perspective on our earthly circumstances so that the Church in every generation is challenged, comforted, and assured of final victory through Jesus Christ.

Rev. Sam Wirgau, pastor at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Ossian, IN, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study John 7:53-8:11. Although manuscript evidence leads to questions as to whether or not this text belongs in this particular spot in the Gospel according to St. John, the text does record an event that occurred during the ministry of Jesus. While Jesus is teaching in the temple, the scribes and Pharisees attempt to trap Jesus by bringing before Him a woman caught in the act of adultery. They attempt to pit Jesus' compassion against the Law of Moses. Jesus stoops down to write before telling them that the one without sin can throw the first stone against the woman. They slowly leave, until Jesus addresses the woman in mercy. Though Jesus is the One without sin who could justly condemn us sinners, He comes to take our condemnation upon Himself. “The Word Made Flesh” is a series on Sharper Iron that goes through the Gospel according to St. John. The disciple whom Jesus loved wrote his Gospel account as an eyewitness to Jesus' life and ministry. As we read the Word of God recorded by St. John, the Holy Spirit works in us so that we might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and so have life by faith in His name.

A change in location to Shiloh and mention of the tent of meeting serve as reminders that the LORD is giving Canaan to His people in order to dwell among them. Joshua encourages the seven tribes who have not yet received their inheritance to trust in the LORD's promises and take possession of His gift. Joshua sends surveyors out into the land to describe it to him before it is divided by lot, according to the LORD's will. This serves as an example of the way the LORD works through His people in their vocations. Of the seven remaining tribes, Benjamin receives his allotment first, a small but significant portion of land among the people of God. “The Promised Land Delivered” is a series on Sharper Iron that goes through the book of Joshua. Today, the Church has the same confidence that all of God's promises find their “Yes” in Christ.

Rev. Sam Wirgau, pastor at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Ossian, IN, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Psalm 31. Because the LORD is a rock, fortress, and refuge, He is the One to whom His people commit themselves. Jesus' use of this prayer from the cross allows us to commit ourselves to God not only every day of our lives but even in the moment of death. We know that He will raise us on the Last Day. This gives us confidence even when enemies assail us from every side. The LORD has our times in His hands, and He will win the victory over His enemies in His time. Christian faith waits patiently for the LORD, taking courage in the knowledge that He will fulfill His promises. Join Sharper Iron during the month of July to study several Psalms. In the Psalter, God speaks His Word to us and teaches us how to speak back to Him in prayer. Even in the great variety of the Psalms, each one points us to our Savior, Jesus Christ.
