Dr Shyam Ranganathan - Yoga's Anticolonial Roots

The Flow Artists Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 1, 2024 60:22

Dr. Shyam Ranganathan, a philosopher, scholar, and author, offers a compelling perspective on yoga as an anticolonial philosophy in this episode of the Flow Artist Podcast. Drawing from his book "Yoga - Anticolonial Philosophy, An Action Focused Guide To Practice," Dr. Ranganathan challenges conventional interpretations of yoga and presents it as a practice that encourages critical thinking, individual sovereignty, and decolonization. The discussion illuminates the contrast between Western academic traditions and South Asian philosophical frameworks, particularly in how non-Western philosophies are often categorized as "religion" rather than recognized as rigorous intellectual systems. Dr. Ranganathan's work seeks to bridge this gap, offering translations and interpretations of key yoga concepts that reveal their deeper philosophical meanings. Throughout the conversation, Dr. Ranganathan stresses the importance of questioning assumptions and engaging in continuous learning within yoga practice. He critiques the tendency in some yoga spaces to present personal opinions as universal truths, instead advocating for a more thoughtful, philosophical exploration of the practice. This approach aligns with his view of yoga as a "work in progress" that encourages practitioners to remain humble and open to growth. The podcast also delves into Dr. Ranganathan's doctoral research on ethical frameworks within yoga and South Asian philosophy. He explains how the "yoga-bhakti" approach, with its emphasis on individual sovereignty and devotion to the ideal of Isvara, offers a decolonial alternative to dominant Western ethical frameworks. This perspective encourages a focus on making responsible choices rather than simply striving to be "good," potentially expanding our imagination for what is possible in addressing societal and environmental issues. Dr Ranganathan has generously offered a special discount to our Patreon subscribers on his latest training. He has also generously shared a free 1.5 hour course: "Yoga, Apparel and Climate Change". 5th Niyama is Isvara Pranidhana complete surrender to the God head of your understanding. To have complete faith in the guiding and protective power of absolute reality behind all life and manifestation. Whatever is omnipresent, omniscient and omnipotent. Yoga is not a religion, however a ‘Spiritual' practice. The teachings suggests we surrender our fruits of our actions, give all of our self over to this Grace that we entrust in and we stay open to what life has to offer. Starting thinking about what you are trying to control, be powerful over? Person, place or thing? Kids, finances, relationships, work outcomes…Or better yet, what would you like to let go of? Fear, anger, envy, resentments…Vyasa one of the commenters of the Yoga Sutras, stated that a mind that is disturbed, distracted and stupefied is not fit for reaching Samadhi. It is only reachable by Yogis who have cultivated a one-pointed and complete still mind, Nirodha. In our focused, diligent practice (Abhyasa) we refine our awareness (Viveka) to observe what arises, discerning our choices in practice. Vairagya is a practice of letting go of sensory observation, training the mind to detach from what arises, distracts or motivates the activity of the mind that prevents it from stillness. This becomes a repetition of mind to practice the art of surrendering that which doesn't serve the practitioner in their pursuit of attaining the state of Yoga.To read more and to practice with Zephyr Wildman, click here. #242 Religion and Spirituality – What's the difference?

When many people think of the two words “religion” and “spirituality” nowadays they could have memes floating around in their minds and not clear and objective ideas. In this talk, we examine these terms from the ancient Vedic perspective. It is really difficult to cover such an important topic in an abbreviated way, and while this is quite a long talk we have not really covered the topic as extensively as we could have if there was more time. Here are the Vedic texts or verses I quoted: A worshiper who faithfully engages in the worship of the Lord in the temple (church) but does not behave properly toward other worshipers or people in general is called a prākṛta-bhakta, a materialistic devotee, and is considered to be in the lowest position. Bhāgavata Purāṇa 11.2.47 He is a perfect yogī who, by comparison to his own self, sees the true equality of all beings, in both their happiness and their distress, O Arjuna! Bhagavad-gita 6.32 He by whom no one is put into difficulty and who is not disturbed by anyone, who is equipoised in happiness and distress, fear and anxiety, is very dear to Me. Bhagavad-gita 12.15 “The Supreme Soul is very satisfied with the transcendentalist when they greet other people with tolerance, mercy, friendship and equality.” - Bhāgavata Purāṇa 4.11.13 The humble sage, by virtue of true knowledge, sees with equal vision a learned and gentle brahmana, a cow, an elephant, a dog and a dog-eater [outcaste]. Bhagavad-gita 5.18 A person is considered still further spiritually advanced when he regards the honest well-wishers, the affectionate benefactors, the neutral, the mediators, the envious, the friends and enemies, the pious and the sinners all with an equal mind. Bhagavad-gita 6.9 Everything animate or inanimate that is within the universe is controlled and owned by the Lord, Isvara. One should therefore accept only those things necessary for himself, which are set aside as his quota, and one should not accept other things knowing well to whom they belong. Śrī Īśopaniṣad mantra 1 Some look on the soul as amazing, some describe the soul as amazing, and some hear of the soul as amazing, while others, even after hearing about the spiritual being, cannot understand him at all. - Bhagavad-gītā 2.29 In this way the conditioned soul living within the body forgets his self-interest because he identifies himself with the body. Because the body is material, his natural tendency is to be attracted by the varieties of the material world. Thus the living entity suffers the miseries of material existence. Bhāgavata Purāṇa 7.13.28 One who is enlightened in self-realization, although living within the material body, sees himself as transcendental to the body, just as one who has arisen from a dream gives up identification with the dream body. Bhāgavata Purāṇa 11.11.8 This is the truth: As sparks of similar form spring forth by the thousands from a strongly blazing fire, so from the Absolute Truth are produced the various living beings, O gentle one, and there also do they go. - Muṇḍaka Upaniṣad 2:1:1 As tiny sparks fly from a fire, so all the individual souls have come from the Supreme. - Bṛhad-āraṇyaka Upaniṣad, 2.2.20 The same jīva is eternal and is for eternity and without a beginning joined to the Supreme Lord by the tie of an eternal kinship. He is transcendental spiritual potency. - Śrī Brahma-saṁhitā 5.21 He who sees systematically everything in relation to the Supreme Lord, who sees all living entities as His parts and parcels, and who sees the Supreme Lord within everything never hates anything or any being. - Śrī Īśopaniṣad mantra 6 The kirtan at the end is a cover of "All I want" by Kodaline

Shri Krishna reveals the means by which we can access Ishvara's cosmic form. “Ananya bhakti”, is the only means to access Ishvara. We have come across the term “Ananya” in prior chapters. It means that in which there is no “Anya”, no other. We should not be devoted to Ishvara so that we can get something else. The devotion should be for obtaining Ishvara and nothing else. Verse 55 is this concluding shloka of the eleventh chapter which considers the essence of the entire Bhagavad Gita. Shri Krishna says that Isvara can be attained by following five guidelines: perform actions for the sake of Ishvara, fix Ishvara as the ultimate goal, observe undivided devotion (Ananya Bhakti) to Ishvara, remain free from worldly attachments, do not harbor likes or dislikes. - Send in a Voice Message - https://anchor.fm/spirituallearningpodcast/message

Class Notes:3.17: svamātrānirmāṇamāpādayati // He can bring about forms in accordance with that measure or aspect of consciousness which is creative and in which he is established." svamātrā:
The measure of consciousness which coagulatesnirmāṇamā : Produces/Creates pādayati: Effects“Svamatra means the measure pertaining to his consciousness, i.e. the aspect of the essence of consciousness that coagulates, that creates.” -Ksemaraja (JDS Translation) “By taking the deception of grossness, they become gross in this universe and by taking the deception of subtleness, they becomes subtle.” -Svacchanda Tantra 4.295 (LMJ Translation)“Because of the power of creative thought (vimarsa sakti), the foundational Self makes Itself as the object of knowledge. The object has no separate existence of its own. If the Self were to depend upon an object, something outside itself, for creation, the Self's absolute freedom would be violated." -Isvara-pratyabhijna I, 5, 15 (JDS Translation)“O dear one, one who knows from the mouth of his spiritual director that water and ice are (essentially) the same (is liberated). He has no further obligation to discharge. He will have no further birth." -Agamas“This state, which is the real nature of Śiva, is not revealed; this state is the revealer…The revealed is not the point to be sought; it is the revealer that is to be striven for.”- Lakshmanjoo, Shiva Sutra 3.16 CommentaryRudi Quote: “We are locked in so many of these things because of our need to be in the mind— to refute, to fight and endlessly find the differences— whereas when we're strong enough to know it's all one, then we have the capacity to be above it. All of those so called differences lead to the same oneness. And you have to do this in your own life. You have to do this with the people you work with and the people you live with, and the people you bond with. You either eventually love with them, and you all go up together, or you endlessly try to find differences. The differences never made a man free, it was the lack of difference that always freed people. It is to find the lack of difference for which you are living, because this holds within it the content, this flow of higher consciousness and energy. Difference makes walls, lack of difference breaks down walls. You must really open to that and feel the lack of difference, and then we drink it in, and the nourishment comes into all of us.”-Swami Rudrananda
