One could easily spend a lifetime exploring Vedic literature and still barely scratch the surface in terms of the wisdom that's available to us. Between the four Vedas, Rig Veda, Sama Veda, Atharva Veda and Yajur Veda, the Upanishads, the Brahma Sutras, the six schools of Vedic philosophy, and countless other written and oral texts or translations, there's no shortage of avenues to explore. And even if you could absorb them all in a lifetime, you'd probably need to reread them to understand them from a more evolved point of view. Fortunately, the Vedic worldview is that all this wisdom is experiential, and we can shortcut the process of attaining wisdom through “knowledge of the Knower.” Thom provides an example of this in this assessment of Patanjali's Eight Limbs of Yoga, a subset of The Yoga Sutras. Thom clarifies that the piecemeal approach of trying to check off the eight limbs through our actions in order to attain the state of Yoga, is a misguided approach to take, and that practicing Vedic Meditation provides an express route that accelerates our personal evolution.Episode Highlights:[00:45] The Yoga Sutras[02:36] Ashta Anga[03:44] Yoga - Unification[06:27] Samadhi[07:39] The Simultaneous Arrival of Balance[09:57] 1. Success in meditation depends on our everyday living which is described in Yoga's “Yama and Niyama) Yama describes five areas of bringing and individual in harmony with the environment and society, and Niyama shows the way to internal harmony and purity. Senior Yoga Teacher, Vani Shukla returns to introduce us to the "Principles and Benefits of Yoga Practice" - a journey towards self-awareness, inner peace and balance. Vani commenced with the very basics: correcting the "strine" pronunciation of Yoga "Yow - (as in "row"-a-boat" - Gar" to "Yo-ga" - with a shortened "o" and "u" as a very basic first step towards showing some credibility in our understanding of Yoga. "Yoga" comes from the Sanskrit root - "Yuj" meaning to unite or join "individual consciousness" with "universal consciousness". Vani then introduced us briefly to the "8 Limbs of Yoga" known as Ashtanga Yoga. As with the limbs of the human body, the 8 Limbs of the Ashtanga - must also grow together: Limb 1 - Yama; Limb 2 - Niyama; Limb 3 - Asana (Physical postures); Limb 4 - Pranayama (Breathing practices); Limb 5 - Pratyahar (Control of senses); (Limbs 6 & 7 - Dhana and Dhyana (Meditation practices); Limb 8 - Samadhi (The "Balanced state of Being"). Under Vani's expert guidance, we then - very briefly - put the Ashtanga into practice in what little time remained.

If this series sparks your interest we'd encourage you to follow that spark... you never know where it may lead you! This is what we spoke about during the episodeNischala Joy Devi translates Svadhyaya as the sacred study of the divine through scripture, nature and introspection. If we do that, this will guide us to the supreme self.Svadhyaya invites us to look within and at the external, and realise that it's all connected. It invites us to the questions "who am I?", "why am I here?", and "how do I wanna live my life?".Always be willing for your concept of reality to change as your consciousness brightens. We have to be willing to let go of the old to welcome in the new. These Yamas and Niyamas can be incorporated into your daily yoga practice—both on and off the mat.If you're just joining us, we recommend starting from Part 1 to fully experience the logical flow of these Yogic philosophies. This episode is Part 8 of our 10-part snack-sized Yoga philosophy series on the Yamas and Niyamas. Tapas is the third Niyama and it traditionally translates to discipline. We go far deeper into these Philosophies inside our 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training. You can learn more about our MerryBody Yoga Teacher Training program over here. If this series sparks your interest we'd encourage you to follow that spark... you never know where it may lead you! This is what we spoke about during the episodeSometimes the word "discipline" comes with negative connotations, so we like to add in "devotional discipline". Even when we're practising discipline, we need an element of love, compassion and forgiveness.Tapas is required if you would like to welcome any kind of change.Things are not always pleasant, but we have to move through those obstacles in order to keep going forward. In regards to MerryBody, Tapas is not just about being disciplined, but it's about how we do the things that we're being disciplined with.Tapas isn't about pushing ourselves to the brink. It's about honouring our bodies and minds, and knowing when to rest.Nischala Joy Devi translates Tapas as living life with zeal and sincerity. When we are disciplined, it invokes this inner flame within us.If you're just joining us, we recommend starting from Part 1 to fully experience the logical flow of these Yogic philosophies. Here's a quick recap: We've covered Ahimsa (non-violence), Satya (truth), Asteya (non-stealing), Brahmacharya (proper use of energy), Aparigraha (detachment), and Saucha (simplicity). This episode is Part 7 of our 10-part snack-sized Yoga philosophy series on the Yamas and Niyamas. Santosha is the second Niyama and it translates to contentment and acceptance. We go far deeper into these Philosophies inside our 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training. You can learn more about our Yoga Teacher Training program over here. If anything within this Yama and Niyamas Series sparks your interest we'd suggest to follow that spark... you never know where it may lead you! Exciting! This is what we spoke about during the episodePersonally and professionally, Santosha is the backbone of everything we do here at MerryBody. It was a life-changing practice for us, particularly for our body image. When you practise acceptance, suddenly, you feel free and able to experience joy just the way that you are. Then, you become more harmonious.Societal pressures affect our self-esteem and Santosha acts as a shield against them. And the more that you practice it, the more easily it comes.Nischala Joy Devi translates Santosha as when at peace and content with oneself and others, supreme joy is celebrated.Santosha is an agreement of faith that we make with our divine self. We no longer see ourselves in the things that we have or in what we look like, instead we identify with the person within.Yoga is so much more than a down dog or the splits. It's so much more than the physical practice. It goes so much deeper. If you're just joining us, we recommend starting from Part 1 to fully experience the logical flow of these Yogic philosophies. 5th Niyama is Isvara Pranidhana complete surrender to the God head of your understanding. To have complete faith in the guiding and protective power of absolute reality behind all life and manifestation. Whatever is omnipresent, omniscient and omnipotent. Yoga is not a religion, however a ‘Spiritual' practice. The teachings suggests we surrender our fruits of our actions, give all of our self over to this Grace that we entrust in and we stay open to what life has to offer. Starting thinking about what you are trying to control, be powerful over? Person, place or thing? Kids, finances, relationships, work outcomes…Or better yet, what would you like to let go of? Fear, anger, envy, resentments…Vyasa one of the commenters of the Yoga Sutras, stated that a mind that is disturbed, distracted and stupefied is not fit for reaching Samadhi. It is only reachable by Yogis who have cultivated a one-pointed and complete still mind, Nirodha. In our focused, diligent practice (Abhyasa) we refine our awareness (Viveka) to observe what arises, discerning our choices in practice. Vairagya is a practice of letting go of sensory observation, training the mind to detach from what arises, distracts or motivates the activity of the mind that prevents it from stillness. This becomes a repetition of mind to practice the art of surrendering that which doesn't serve the practitioner in their pursuit of attaining the state of Yoga.To read more and to practice with Zephyr Wildman, click here. Nov 4, 2022 #ParamahansaYogananda #Yogananda #Patanjali Brother Chidananda dives deeply into the subject of yama and niyama, the spiritual rules comprising the first two steps in the Eightfold Path of Yoga of Patanjali (enumerated in the Yoga Sutras). Brother Chidananda shares wisdom from Paramahansa Yogananda and his guru, Swami Sri Yukteswar, on how these simple but powerful rules form the true basis for successful practice of meditation. These same universal laws in the yamas and niyamas, Paramahansa Yogananda explained, are found in the scriptures of all great religions of the world; and when we decide to make use of them daily they become a powerful force on our journey to soul freedom. As Brother Chidananda says, these spiritual rules are not our masters but our servants, and he or she is their master who obeys them — creating thereby a solid and enduring foundation on which to build our spiritual lives, and ultimately attain liberation. This talk was given at the 2011 SRF World Convocation; Brother Chidananda became president and spiritual head of Self-Realization Fellowship/Yogoda Satsanga Society of India in 2017. Brother Chidananda mentions at one point an article by Sri Daya Mata, third president of SRF/YSS, which appeared in an issue of Self-Realization magazine. By subscribing to this magazine, founded by Paramahansa Yogananda in 1925, you also have access to an extensive online library of articles from Yogananda and his direct disciples, such as Sri Daya Mata and others, as well as unlimited listening to all the talks released as audio with the magazine: https://bookstore.yogananda-srf.org/p... Brother Chidananda also speaks of the importance of daily study of enlightened wisdom as can be found in the Self-Realization Fellowship Lessons. The SRF Lessons, Paramahansa Yogananda's home-study course, provides his comprehensive instruction in the science of Kriya Yoga meditation and the art of balanced living, so that you can spiritualize every aspect of your life and discover your blissful soul-nature. Hello Magical Human & welcome back to Madison Mindset the Podcast
This practice we will focus on the 4th Niyama, Svadhyaya: Self-study, self- inquiry, it is to observe the self, understand it and self-reflect on it. It is the study by and of oneself, along side of the study of spiritual scripture and teachings. Reading, listening and reciting mantras. Through repetition we learn, deepening the knowledge and opening to true wisdom.Sva means own or self. Dhyaya means lesson, practice, teaching. The word literally means ‘placing it within your own' or ‘own- ing' the lesson, the teaching own the lesson as you focus on what is arising right here and now.In practice we take it all in, whatever arises in our field of experience. Welcoming it all as teachers, make the understanding and experience your own, place yourself within it. This is where your light of intelligence (Prajna), discernment (Vikeka) and your intuitive wisdom (Buddhi) gathered insight into what is arising in practice in the form of thought, emotions and sensations. To read more and to practice with Zephyr Wildman, click here. This practice is focusing on the 3rd Niyama; Tapas – Yogic Austerity. Tapas means heat of positive change. This is said to be the earliest term for the ‘austerity of Yoga' and the endeavours of the practitioners. Tap means to burn or glow, it includes the element of fire (Agni) that is also said to be the essential element to create life, to heal, to inspire and to transform. Agni is seen to be the sacrificial fire that reintegrates what has been contaminated by being human – life experiences, judgements, bias, our opinions, our ignorance that makes us forget what we truly are and limits us to who we think we are. Tapas refers to inner heat, the desire that leads to ecstatic and creative states, so pointing the Yogi to something positive. Tapas usually involves having healthy boundaries with others and ourselves (Brahmacharya) and control of your senses (Indriya Jaya) through physical acts of austerity, concentration and mediation. The results are that the Yogi is left strong, filled with vitality (Bala, Virya) and it states that they are radiantly heavenly (Jyotish) they have an aura that is beamingly resplendent (Tejas). So why do Tapas, well to fulfil our Vedic goals of life, these are the Purusarthas; Dharma, Artha, Kama, Moksha. To read more and to practice with Zephyr Wildman, click here. Last session we worked with Sauca which ‘cleans' the physical, energetic and mental bodies in practice and shines a brighter clearer light to a deeper tranquil state of being. All of this is the pursuit to the state of Yoga. In this session we are working on the second Niyama, Santosa, which points you to have a more intimate and honest relationship with the whole of you, so you can practice just being present with ‘what is' and that ‘what is', is enough. From that acceptance of ‘what is' in any given moment, it states it will bring you unsurpassed joy.Sam (san) in sanskrit means completely, altogether and entirely – Tosa(tosha) means a state of contentment, satisfaction, acceptance, being comfortable. When we feel content and satisfied with our lives, there is a profound acceptance of ‘what is' and delight, serenity, sincere gratitude arises.Vyasa stated in his commentary of the Yoga Sutras that when Santosa is achieved it is measured by the “existence of a joyful and satisfied mind, regardless of one's environment, whether one is met with pleasure or pain, profit or loss, fame or contempt, success or failure, sympathy or hatred.”To read more and to practice with Zephyr Wildman, click here. Niyamas are the basis for a healthy relationship with ourselves. In yoga, we place ourselves in a relationship to something, focusing our mind and body to the art of ‘purification' through Yoga practice in order to produce a positive effect the pursuit of the state of Yoga. The Hatha Yoga Pradipika text warns the student, “Graha Niyama” to not take these Niyamas to extremes as it reinforces unhealthy motivations and self-abuse. This guides the student to bespoke the practice and walk the ‘middle path'. The first Niyama is Sauca which is the caring for ourselves and our environment, making it clean and tidy. It literally means cleanliness, Sauca is to shine, gleam, to be clean. Sauca usually refers to the exterior inhabitance, but it also applies to the internal as well, equally nourishing the healthy and unhealthy parts of ourselves. Sometimes we have to trick ourselves to do this as we don't give ourselves the same attention as if we were caring for a family member, a friend or a beloved pet. We tend to treat them better than we treat ourselves. To read more and to practice with Zephyr Wildman, click here. To support Zephyr Yoga Podcast, donate here. Hosted on Acast. Title: Expressions of the Divine15th Chapter: Verses 12, 13, 14, 1512th12th verse: “There is one all-pervading, immanent, omnipresent, and supreme divine reality which is the Atman. This Atman is the divine light that is present in every being. The light that is in the sun, in the moon and in the fire – that light is nothing but the light of the Atman.”Our creativity and our ability to think and work are all expressions of this divine principle. Just as electricity manifests in different ways depending on the gadget it powers, similarly, our skills are like outer shells that manifest this divine principle. In whatever profession one may be, if that person reaches a level of human excellence – that perfection is a spark of the divinity within him.Wherever we find a super abundance of serenity, spiritual wisdom, intuitive power and human qualities such as sacrifice – all these are expressions of the divine. We can manifest this divinity through spiritual practices such as Yama and Niyama in Vedanta or Ashtanga Yoga in Buddhism. Then our mind becomes pure and reflects this divinity in more effulgence like a pure mirror.Lord Krishna says: “This light comes from Me.” “Me” here does not refer to Lord Krishna as a human being. It refers to Atman.13th verse: “This divine principle, which enters the earth, enlivens everything. When we look around in nature, we see trees, mountains, valleys, water, plants, food grains – these are all expressions of the divine.”Nature is not meant for our exploitation. We are all visitors on this mother earth. Vedic mantras emphasize harmony and balance of nature. Let the earth, clouds, skies, plants, trees and the entire cosmos remain pure, undisturbed, and in perpetual peace and harmony.Satyam means truth. A person will not deviate from the path of harmony if he practices truthfulness and feels content.Ritm is the central principle of inherent harmony that exists in nature.Dharma refers to the ethical and moral principles through which one practices Satyam. For example, it is immoral to pollute the earth and therefore against Dharma.14th verse: “It is this divine principle that resides in every being, eats and digests the food, and nourishes the body.”There are four types of food referred to in this verse – food that we chew, that we drink, that we swallow and foods such as ice-cream that belong to the first three categories. The divine principle manifests as the digestive faculty in the human body.Even the act of preparing and eating food is divine. Every secular activity can be given a spiritual orientation – as we evolve spiritually, the line of demarcation between secular and spiritual disappears. We can think of our entire life as a divine act. There is a mantra in Rigveda which means: “Let every thought become a meditation, let every word become a mantra, let every action become an act of worship, let every travel become a pilgrimage, let every movement become a circumambulation around the deity, and let the whole life become an offering to God.”15th verse: “This divine principle is present as the indweller in every living being in this world. It manifests as memory, knowledge, ignorance and forgetfulness.”The ability to forget and to be blissfully unaware in ignorance is also a gift from God. Without the ability to forget no one can live in this world. The highest advaitic experience cannot be explained. It can only be experienced. The mahavakya “Aham Brahmasmi” – as an expression is not non-dualistic; it represents only the penultimate state; in its experience dimension it is non-dualistic.The language of duality is verbosity; the language of the infinite non-dual experience is silence. The role of the scriptures is to remove the wrong notions that are in our mind.

Hola hermosa familia !! In this episode, we reboot our understanding of the Yama & NIyama, and how they provide a giant tree of protection for our spiritual lives. We will take a look at the classical 5 yama and 5 niyama presented by Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras, but also additional ones that are in the ancient text of the Yoga Yagñavalkya. In the beginning, the yama and niyama may seem like a list of dos and don'ts, but actually they provide a beautiful roadmap of the path to liberation, and how to right the course if we have gone asunder. The beauty of the yama and niyama is that as we deepen in our understanding, their subtly opens to us naturally, rather than something we try or force ourselves to do. They are the beginning of the practice, and strengthen as a by-product of our practice as well. We will take a look at the following Yama: 1) Ahimsa - Non-harming 2) Satya - Truthfulness 3) Asteya - Non-stealing 4) Brahmacharya - Moderation of the senses 5) Aparigraha - Non-possessiveness 6) Dayā -Compassion 7) Ārajava - Sincerity/Non-hypocrisy 8) Kṣamā - Forgiveness 8) Dhṛitiḥ - Fortitude and, 9) Mitāhāra - Measured Diet And the following Niyama: 1) Saucha - Cleanliness [in the Yoga Yagñavalkya, Saucha is part of the Yama; however, Patanjali places saucha in the category of niyama and I have chosen to remain faithful to Patanjali's classification] 2) Santosha - Contentment 3) Tapas - Fire of Discipline 4) Svadhyāya - Self-study thru the Scriptures 5) Iśvara Praṇidhāna - Trustful Surrender 6) Āstikya - Faith in the Dharma 7) Dāna - Generosity 8) Mati - Self-respect 9) Hrī - Humility 10) Japa - Repetition of Mantra, and 11) Vrata - Taking of Sacred Vows
