I was just thinking, also, about yesterday. We went out. It's an ocean out there, and people are coming from every direction. You don't know who they are, where they're coming from. I was thinking of the churning of the milk ocean when the devas and the asuras came together for the yajña. It was Viṣṇu's wish that they did this yajña. So, they threw all the ingredients into the ocean. And then, of course, with the help of The Lord at every step, because they couldn't even carry them out by themselves. But when they started churning, then of course, Hālāhala poison came out. And then there was Lakṣmī Jī and all the different entities. Saṅkīrtana is like that. It's the yajna, yuga-dharma. When we go out and attempt to distribute the holy names, the Bhāgavatam, and the Bhagavad-gītā, it's like churning in that crowd, and you don't know who's going to come out of it. Yesterday, on the way home, I got a note from somebody on our team about a person who had written in and said that many years ago, they got a book at a motel, and they didn't think anything of it. They said, "We stole it." It was a Bhagavad-gītā, and they said, "We also got some packet at Los Angeles Ratha-yātrā; somebody handed us one. We had them all, and we didn't do anything about it." He said, "But now I'm chanting. I'm reading. I'm part of the program." So the yajña is very potent because The Holy Name always has a supreme effect, even if somebody accidentally does it, what to speak of jokingly. I was thinking yesterday, too, there were so many challenges. Somebody called me a white devil. Another kid, when I asked about karma, he had some—he was very pugnacious and wanted to challenge the whole idea of morality and everything. Śukadeva Gosvāmī says in the 14th Chapter of the 10th Canto that when people have a home, if it doesn't have Kṛṣṇa Consciousness inside, then it becomes like a prison. They're locked in, can't get out. Every realm is defined by the sound vibration. So you can have a fancy house, but once you are locked in there, you're stuck with the sound vibration that's inside. If the sound vibration is mundane, then it doesn't matter how fancy the house is, you'll be in hellish consciousness. And by the same principle, if you're even in the simplest environment, if the vibration is pure, then you're not in the material world. You're in the transcendental realm, as the realm is defined by the transcendental sound vibration. I once lived in Bhuvaneśvara in a little hut, went to my god-brother, and HH Gaura Govinda Mahārāja was staying there too. We had no facility, except for we would cook on a little fire, and Mahārāja would give class in the morning sitting on just a little wooden platform. There was nothing around at that time. But we were just completely happy, just a little khichḍī. We would sleep on the dirt floor in that hut and then listen to Bhāgavatam and chant, and then go to Jagannāth Purī. And it's a blissful life. So this grandiose society, everyone's trying to find happiness by developing materially, but they don't know the principle, which is sound vibration. So it's our job to introduce the science of Kṛṣṇa consciousness so people can transform their lives by upgrading their soundtrack and making sure that they include The Hare Kṛṣṇa Mahāmantra. They could even put Gaura Nitāi in their house. What a difference that would make! You could spend $5 million on a house on the street that's on the low side. We looked it up. One house is for sale down here. It's 4.2; it's the crappiest house on the block. But if there's no Gaura Nitāi inside any of these places, then what is the use? Soft pillows and a bed? It's just the exact same thing. That's what Śukadeva Gosvāmī says in the beginning of the Second Canto of Bhāgavatam you know, just live simply and chant Hare Kṛṣṇa and be happy. He is our little vegan friend (pointing to a snail on the sidewalk). He is informed from within by the Supersoul, but I'm not sure where he's going now, because it doesn't look promising, does it? You can see how hapless living entities who have no guidance can wander into some place that is extremely dangerous and be stepped on by material nature. So, it's there in the Bhagavatām: 'samāśritā ye pada-pallava-plavaṁ mahat-padaṁ puṇya-yaśo murāreḥ bhavāmbudhir vatsa-padaṁ paraṁ padaṁ padaṁ padaṁ yad vipadāṁ na teṣām (SB 10.14.58).' The material world is vipadam; it's very dangerous. Any step—your step or somebody else's step—can crush you. So that's like material nature. Here's the Virajā, maybe here's Vaikuntha . So, the avatāra comes and just intervenes. "I'm really sorry, my little vegan friend. Hare Kṛṣṇa. Hare Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa, Hare Hare Hare Rāma, Hare Rāma, Rāma Rāma, Hare Hare. We love you very much. Please tell all your friends to chant Hare Kṛṣṇa, and please, in your next life, come back to our program for going back to Godhead. And the second verse—one of the two Prabhupāda's most-quoted verses, there are only two out of that whole chapter (SB 10.33: The Rasa Lila) —is: "vikrīḍitaṁ vraja-vadhūbhir idaṁ ca viṣṇoḥ śraddhānvito 'nuśṛṇuyād atha varṇayed yaḥ bhaktiṁ parāṁ bhagavati pratilabhya kāmaṁ hṛd-rogam āśv apahinoty acireṇa dhīraḥ (SB 10.33.39)." The topics of Kṛṣṇa, especially His consorting with the gopīs of Vṛndāvan, have so much spiritual potency that, śraddhānvito 'nuśṛṇuyād, if somebody faithfully hears them, if they have the context and they understand the other verse, then, such a person very quickly, acireṇa dhīraḥ, that person becomes dhīra. He's not affected by the material world anymore, which is interesting because it's a love story. But by hearing that story, one becomes immune to the so-called "love story" of the material world that everyone is affected by. Everyone is overtaken by Cupid in the material world; nobody can get out of it. It's too powerful. But the potency of Kṛṣṇa kathā is such that if one hears that and understands Kṛṣṇa's position—"dharma-vyatikramo dṛṣṭa īśvarāṇāṁ ca sāhasam"—He's an Īśvara. He's like fire; he can't be contaminated. So, what is taking place there? If one could understand that topic, then 'acireṇa dhīra,' very quickly, one becomes sober and not affected by the material world. What to speak of, 'bhaktim, Param Bhagavati, pratilabhya kama,' he attains the highest level of bhakti and overcomes the "dread disease of the heart," which is Kāma, the lust of the material world. What do you think? Audience: That's very powerful. It's very interesting because if you look at the selected verses throughout the 10th Canto, you can gain something by seeing which ones Prabhupada quoted the most and which topic he was on, what was his thread when you go through. But I just noted that those are the two from the Rasalīlā chapter. He could have quoted something more rasika on a regular basis, but he gave these verses that give context so that one could enter into them properly. Daivī hy eṣā guṇa-mayī, mama māyā duratyayā. Mām eva ye prapadyante, māyām etāṁ taranti te. That means that the material world is too complicated; nobody can ever figure it out. Why are you in so much anxiety? Because everyone, from the ant to Lord Brahmā, is. So, there's a resort: it's the holy name. It's the only resort. Don't feel bad about being in anxiety. Everybody's in anxiety because the material world is duratyayā. Don't try to fix it by figuring it out—you can't do it, it's impossible. But if you take shelter of the holy name and just say, "Kṛṣṇa, you're my only resort. I'm just taking shelter of You, please show me the way, and please show me how to figure out this complicated mess I'm in here in the material world." If we can touch that region of absorption and experience, just for one second, then the controlling of senses is not an issue—because it's a higher taste. And it takes a lot of practice, because the mind has been controlling us since time immemorial—not just this lifetime, but previous lifetimes as well. It keeps forcing us to do things. It's like an overlord. Kṛṣṇa tells that to Uddhava in the 11th Canto of the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam, that we've been under no other master except for the mind since time immemorial, and it has fearsome, god-like powers over us—as in, practically nobody can do this. We can only do it with the help of Kṛṣṇa. So, the chanting of Kṛṣṇa's names—calling out to Him for help—and the ways that He has extended Himself to us The Holy Name, if we extend back.. Attention, It has the word ten in it. It's the same root as in the word tendon, which comes from Latin tendere, “to stretch.” It means to hold on to something, just like a tendon holds muscle and bone together. So that's our attention: we have to extend ourselves back to Kṛṣṇa. And just from this one process—there is no other process: "harer nāma harer nāma harer nāmaiva kevalam," eva kevalam --nothing else. It's only one thing. So don't think you have to go shopping anywhere else for some other process. That's just another trick of the mind—to say, “This is too hard,” or “I'll go find something easier,” or “There must be something fancier or more rasika.” No—the rasika is in The Holy Name, and the real rasikas are the ones who do the hard work. They try it every day. That's why I called you stalwarts: you show up with your lunch box, and you sit down, and you do your work—and that's sādhana-bhakti. No excuses. No cutting class. You show up for your japa, and you make sure that you extend yourself as much as possible and keep practicing. And at some point, the mind becomes attracted to The Holy Name. It starts to sound sweet. Even before that, in nāmābhāsa, there's this radiation from The Holy Name that is described in the Harināma cintāmaṇi—that is bringing us unlimited benefits and preparing us for continuance in the process of chanting The Holy Names. So, nothing is lost in the process. And then, if we can really try to avoid the offenses—especially being inattentive—don't be lazy. Really try to work at it. Do the heavy lifting that nobody else wants to do. Everyone wants to scroll. "Just let the mind do it and maybe figure it out at the time of death." It won't work. You have to do it now. You have to do it when you're young. And you've gotta get really strong now. Then everything else becomes easy. As humans, we have this ability to rest our own attention from wherever it is and point it where we want to go. "Yānti deva-vratā devān pitṝn yānti pitṛ-vratāḥ." (BG 9.25) Kṛṣṇa says, "Wherever you point your attention, you're going to end up going there, so make sure you know where you're going little fella." I say that sometimes to earthworms because I see them crawling in the wrong direction. It's like, "Are you sure you want to go there? That's a desert out there." So, there's a principle of attention, and I've rendered it like this: "I respect the principle that I am fully responsible for where I direct my attention at any given point. Giving my attention to the Mahamantra while I'm chanting my rounds is essential to improving my chanting and eventually coming to the pure state of chanting." If you walk your dog and the dog goes off the leash and bites somebody, who's responsible? You or the dog? You are! Similarly, with our attention, we have to direct it. We're responsible for it. If it goes off somewhere else, that's on us. It's not like, "Oh, that's just what my attention does." Well, maybe when you are an animal, but not when you're a human, and especially not when you're a Sadhaka. Sadhaka means, "I take full responsibility for my attention," and you sign the sheet that says, "I'm taking responsibility for my own attention." This is where it really counts when we chant Japa. Because everyone says, "It's too hard, I can't do it." We can do it! Not only that, it's nectarian. "Nāma-cintāmaṇi-kṛṣṇaś caitanya-rasa-vigrahaḥ." Kṛṣṇa is fully present in his name, and he's there as a gem, just wanting to benedict our lives. That's what everyone's looking for: benediction. His name is: "Vṛṣākapi" means that when we give our attention to Kṛṣṇa, His reciprocation is to shower us with blessings, to fulfill all our desires, and to take away our miseries. So, is it worth meditating on Kṛṣṇa and taking the austerity to not look at the social media for half a second and just concentrate fully on Kṛṣṇa ? Yeah! The great acharyas do it, and they assure us that it's the doubtless and fearless way of success for all. Everything that we do, especially as humans, has consequences. There's a sequence that takes place when we enact anything—say any word, think any thought, perform any action, or do any work. There's a consequence; there's a sequence that unfolds. The most important of all consequences come from the chanting of The Holy Name.Another point is that if we don't do anything else right in our life, if we don't do it perfectly, if we concentrate all our disciplined energy in chanting good rounds, then everything else will go right. This is because, by chanting good rounds, everything else self-aligns. As Prabhupāda writes in one of his purports, by chanting the mantra, all energies are synchronized in one place. Finally, it feels so good to chant because, first of all, it's perfect alignment. In other words, in the vernacular, we're doing the right thing. It's also Ācāryopāsanā because, as we heard, the great sages, the great devotees, they chant Hare Kṛṣṇa. Not only that, we got instructions directly from Lord Caitanya and then, through this succession, under whom, Śrīla Prabhupāda, we've taken shelter to chant in a particular way and to finish a particular number. This is numerical strength, and by doing it regularly, we get this ācāryaopāsanā, worship of the Ācārya. And of course, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu taught us a couple of principles to make the experiment in our lives and the transformation effective. As all of you have, I'm sure, done labs in the past, the conditions have to be right. So one of the conditions is that one has to have a humble heart, a humble heart and mind, in approaching The Holy Name. And that means in body, mind, and words, and not just at the time of chanting. It has to be integrated into one's lifestyle and the way that one approach others, the way that one looks at the world. "I am insignificant. I am an instrument. I give respect to all others." How can that be done? Well, Mahāprabhu says, "See at each person has a spiritual spark and the potential within them, and their connection to the Supreme Personality of Godhead and practice it. That's why he says one should be ready to offer all respects. So get ready for that. That's the lifestyle which prepares us to approach the Supreme Personality of Godhead through His Holy Name and actually vibrate the mantra in such a way that it becomes fully effective in our lives. So Mahāprabhu gave this scenario: "Okay, I've realized that The Holy Name is Kṛṣṇa—nāma nāmākāri bahudhā nija sarva śaktis—all of His personal presence is there. However, I can't do it. I'm so unfortunate, I still can't do it, even though I know it." So he said, "Here is how to rearrange the clinical setting so that you can do it: tṛṇād api sunīcena taror api sahiṣṇunā, amāninā mānadena kīrtanīya sadā hari." Work on your attitude towards the world, towards other people. And if you develop a humble heart—it just sounds good, doesn't it? "Have a humble heart"—if you develop a humble heart, and if you've ever met anybody with a truly humble heart, there's a way in which you just gravitate towards that person. So Kṛṣṇa gravitates towards those who have a humble heart also, and who respect others, and try this: be ready to not accept any respect in return for anything. What if you lived in that space? Well, Caitanya Mahāprabhu said," then you could go kīrtanīya sadā hari—you can go on singing the name, effectively." He'll appear on your tongue, in your heart, in your mind, and everything becomes self-evident from that point. So we have to perform the experiment on ourselves. It's a very mysterious world. Physicists can't figure out what matter is, nor do they know what consciousness is. Psychologists have different ideas about the brain; sociologists, different theories about how people interact; and so on and so forth. It's very, very complicated. I like the metaphor, "leaning in." It's like crossing through a doorway where we have no other awareness except for The Holy Name. I was thinking back to what I read at the beginning—that there are states of consciousness that we cycle through, and one of them is the deep sleep. Even then, we have proximity to Kṛṣṇa. Sometimes we meet people and we tell them something about Kṛṣṇa, give them a book, and it's not immediately evident, but later, we'll meet them. Or maybe we won't meet them, we'll meet somebody else who had an incidental contact with the devotee, and then they'll tell how everything started from that one statement. “I heard that thing. He said this, I read this one thing, and then it started.” And we're in a liminal state. Any minute we can cross back over into the spiritual environment by a little encouragement from the sound vibration, or by the same principle, we can always slip into nescience. But once the devotees have been awakened and have experienced the taste of Kṛṣṇa consciousness, even if they temporarily slip into darkness, it's not the same, Nārada Muni says, “as it is for somebody who's never experienced it, they always remember it.” Even though they become captured by Māyā, they still remember. As Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura said, they're haunted by the ghost of rasa. Rasāgraha, he said, “they're grabbed by it.” They keep thinking, “Oh, yeah, but I remember that time.” So it's very poignant, what you said about the power of the sound. When you're used to something, you don't see it after a while. And when somebody new comes and looks at it, they go, "Oh, that!" Like, if you have a beautiful picture in your house, you see it all the time, so you don't even notice it until you bring someone over and they look and say, "Where'd you get that? It's beautiful!" And you go, "Oh, that? Yeah, I haven't seen it for a year." That's why it's important to bring new people into Kṛṣṇa consciousness, because they come in and they're wide-eyed—meaning, full of wonder. There are five stages in Deity worship starting with gathering paraphernalia and putting it together, that's the first stage. And then the second, once the paraphernalia is assembled, it is called Yoga, which means that one has to conceptualize oneself as an eternal servant of Kṛṣṇa, separate from the body. To that end, there's the Bhūta Śuddhi; 'I am by nature the eternal servant of Kṛṣṇa, but by misfortune, due to being inimical towards Him since time immemorial, I have been wandering in the cycle of birth and death again and again in this material existence being burnt by the threefold miseries. Now, as a result of some unimaginable good fortune, by the mercy of my spiritual master, I have attained the good fortune of serving at his lotus feet, as well as the lotus feet of Lord Chaitanya Mahāprabhu and Rādhā-Śyāmasundar. And then: nāhaṁ vipro na ca nara-patir nāpi vaiśyo na śūdro nāhaṁ varṇī na ca gṛha-patir no vanastho yatir vā kintu prodyan-nikhila-paramānanda-pūrnāmṛtābdher gopī-bhartuḥ pada-kamalayor dāsa-dāsānudāsaḥ (CC Madhya 13.80) I have no material designation. This morning, I was listening to Prabhupada, and he was talking about how there are different kinds of liberated souls: "muktānām api siddhānāṁ nārāyaṇa-parāyaṇaḥ su-durlabhaḥ praśāntātmā koṭiṣv api mahā-mune (SB 6.14.5).' There are millions and millions of sages and different kinds of people who have achieved liberation through knowledge. They've seen the impersonal Brahman and Paramatma. But it's the most rare that someone can understand Bhagavan -Kṛṣṇa. And it's only by association with pure devotees, He said, that only by understanding Bhagavan is there Ananda. When you have that relationship, you know you have a relationship. And then Prabhupada named the different relationships you could have: as a parent, as a lover, as a friend, as a servitor. Then he started saying, you could be the water in Vrindavan. And he was talking about how, once you have that relationship, then that ānanda is unlimited. It's not like, he said, in the material world, we think ānanda comes from some temporary pleasure, but that, he said, only lasts for a few minutes. So intelligent people, 'ye hi saṁsparśajā bhogā' they don't appreciate it at all. The sages, he said: 'ramante yogino 'nante satyānande cid-ātmani iti rāma-padenāsau paraṁ brahmābhidhīyate (CC Madhya 9.29).' That those who understand that real pleasure comes from Rama, association with Kṛṣṇa, that's the real happiness, and they don't need anything else. 'Bhejire munayo 'thāgre bhagavantam adhokṣajam sattvaṁ viśuddhaṁ kṣemāya kalpante ye 'nu tān iha.' Suta Goswami says in the Srimad Bhagavatam, First Canto, Second Chapter, that previously - agre, all the great sages worshiped Lord Narayan because He's beyond the modes of material nature. Therefore, they attained the highest benefit. Anyone who follows in their footsteps, even if they're not great sages, is eligible for the same result. So, this point that Ranchor Prabhu is making is very important: if we follow the pathway of the great acharyas—mahājano yena gataḥ sa panthāḥ—however insignificant we may be, we'll attain the same result because of following in their footsteps. And Krishna gives us this encouragement, as He spoke to Uddhava in the Bhagavatam, 11th Canto (11.21.2): 'sve sve 'dhikāre yā niṣṭhā sa guṇaḥ parikīrtitaḥ,' that if you follow according to your capacity, that's a good quality. 'Viparyayas tu doṣaḥ syād'—it's the opposite if you try to do more than you're qualified for. Then, He said, it's a fault. Stay within your limit and do the best you can with what you have right now, and you'll be able to attain everything by the mercy of the process, which is also mentioned: 'tvat-pada-potena mahat-kṛtena, kurvanti, govatsa-padam bhavābdhim.' This means it's a process left behind by the great acharyas. Don't you find that the more you practice listening to The Holy Name and being fully present, the more the mind has a glimmer of attachment for the chanting of the Holy Name? If so, that's great advancement. Even the slightest inclination of the mind that 'I'd like to do this' shows that you're moving forward in Krishna consciousness. And even if you're not, if you have that sense of determination, that śraddhā in the śāstra, in the words of Guru-Paramparā, that you should do this, and you do it based on this sense of 'I must do it'—in the vaidhī mode—still, there's a taste in that. Because you feel, 'Yes, I'm doing the right thing.' Most of the time in the material world, everyone's doing the wrong thing, and there's cognitive dissonance: 'I'm doing the wrong thing, I'm doing the wrong thing. I wish I could do the right thing.' You have to reinvent yourself every day and don't become disappointed, because progress comes in a series of comebacks. You have to be the comeback kid, because even during one round of Japa, you may have to make 10 comebacks. What to speak of You know, in a lifetime of devotional service, you have to reinvent yourself, start over, make comebacks constantly, and be willing to do that. And that's the way to put together one whole lifetime in which you're on an upward trajectory. And as Prabhupada writes, in the Light of the Bhagavata, missteps may not be detrimental. They may become the pillars to success if we approach with the right attitude. Be humble, and also appreciate devotees who have good qualities. As Voltaire once said, 'When you appreciate the good qualities in others, they become yours. If you're envious of others, you don't get anything. You void the possibility for attaining good qualities in this life.' So, worship devotees. Wherever you see somebody who's more enthusiastic than you, serve that person or appreciate them deeply. And if you keep doing that, especially with devotees, because our main source of advancement is the association of devotees. Find devotees. And it doesn't just mean that there's only one person, there's only Jesus, there's only Muhammad, there's only Prabhupada. Prabhupada is reflected within everyone. In fact, it might be the new person. Lord Caitanya did this in the Jagannath temple, at the Garuda-stambha. He was beholding the beautiful lotus eyes of Lord Jagannath. And an Orissan woman came in and climbed up on the Lord's shoulders, one foot on the Garuda-stambha and one foot on The Lord's shoulder so she could look. She was oblivious to the fact that anybody was standing there, because she was so eager to see The Lord. And then when Govinda, His servant, saw her climb up there, he said, 'Get down! Get down! Get down! Get down! What are you doing?' Mahaprabhu then became aware of what was happening, and He chastised Govinda, not the woman. He said, 'What are you? An uncivilized person?' He said to His servant. 'Don't you recognize the enthusiasm that she has? I wish I had that.' So we should see that in everyone. That's why Sankirtan is a beautiful thing, and the preaching you're doing here is beautiful. Thank you very much for joining us for Make Japa Great Again. It's our main objective in our practice of Bhakti Yoga to make japa great. Everything else falls into place when that's correct. In Japanese, there's a word hazu. In an arrow here's a little groove or a notch where you drop the bow into so you can shoot it, and that's called the hazu. So, that word is used when people are talking about something that was appropriate, that fit. And so when our japa is correct, we have hazu. That means everything else fits perfectly in our life. If we don't have that, then it doesn't matter what else we do; we'll shoot the arrow in the wrong direction, or it won't shoot at all. So, this is our main service. We have full permission from Mahaprabhu and all our acharyas to give ourselves fully to the process of chanting japa. No one will fault you for that if you shut off everything else and schedule time just for japa. Japa is the mainstay of every practitioner, and anyone who takes it seriously, starting with the idea that no matter what every day, "I always finish my prescribed number of rounds." Anyone who thinks like that is a high-level sādhaka, and anyone who does that without fail will make advancement in devotional service without any doubt. So this is "Make japa great again!" And it means make it great again. Even if it was great yesterday, you have to start over again today and make it great today. Every day is a compartmentalized unit, and we can't rely on the past. We have to say, "Today is the day when it's going to be great." So, knowing that we're authorized by the great ācāryas, all of them recommend, "ei mukta-kaler upasyamānam," all the liberated personalities recommend chanting Hare Krishna. The śāstra recommends chanting Hare Krishna. Unauthorized or improperly parked vehicles will be towed away at the owner's expense." Means that if—if you leave your mind unattended and not engaged in Kṛṣṇa's service, it's like you just parked it somewhere in the wrong place, it'll get towed away. And when you get your mind towed away, if you've ever had your car towed away, you've got to go down to the impound and pay some exorbitant amount of money to get it back. It's not easy, and so don't park your mind in an improper place and just leave it there, because it will get towed so far away, you may not be able to find it again. Every worthy goal has a discipline. Some people work for becoming a surgeon—four years of college, seven years of medical school, residency, waiting for this and that, maybe to cure cancer. Is there a cure for cancer? No, but they still keep doing it. And there's this practice of reaching our original position with Kṛṣṇa in the spiritual world. What's that worth? Four years of college, seven years of special training? It's worth lifetimes, and every session of chanting japa is a testament to our determination to reach Kṛṣṇa, who says in His teachings to Uddhava, "This dedication that you have—bhaktyāham ekayā grāhyaḥ śraddhayātmā priyaḥ satām—it's very dear to Me." So if we remember that the goal is something beyond what anybody else is doing in this world, and that our orientation is towards Kṛṣṇa, despite whatever other duties we have to do in this world, our main process is pointing ourselves back home, back to Godhead. Every japa session is a welcome opportunity to lean into that determination and express to Kṛṣṇa from our heart, "This is what I really want." So we can use this session today. For some of us on the West Coast, it's still Akṣaya Tṛtīyā until the sun is fully up. But whatever, it doesn't matter. So in japa, this principle can be applied of asking Kṛṣṇa for what's most valuable, and we can ask again and again, because the mind might go to something lesser. The main obstacle is a clear path to a lesser goal, and in japa, we're forging a path to the highest goal, but it has to come from us, and that's why it's an individual practice. Kṛṣṇa wants to know especially what we want. He's attentive to every living entity in an individualized way. 'Drive with care' is something Kṛṣṇa points out in the Bhagavad Gita. First he says, "yānti deva-vratā devān pitṝn yānti pitṛ-vratāḥ bhūtāni yānti bhūtejyā yānti mad-yājino 'pi mām (BG 9.25)." Yanti means to go. He said, You can go any direction you want. In this universe, it's a matter of where you push your attention. Because where attention goes, energy flows. And he says you should drive with care, because, for instance, if you drive blindfolded, you're going to smash into somebody, and it's going to have a negative consequence on your life. So in the Gita, he talks about how you should be aware of how the world is comprised of three modes of material nature, and be careful where you associate yourself and how you interact with the world. Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura gives this technique for success in chanting which is to beg. If you beg Kṛṣṇa for a place in devotional service, you will make advancement, although we're helpless—just tiny beings enveloped by the material energy and conducted by the modes of material nature—if we beg Him to be a servant and just keep begging over and over again, think of a very persistent beggar who follows somebody for miles and miles and miles and won't give up. That's how Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura says that he was successful. He received the Holy Name from Lord Caitanya because he begged for it. If we sincerely try to fix our mind on Kṛṣṇa and we practice, then: teṣāṁ satata-yuktānāṁ bhajatāṁ prīti-pūrvakam dadāmi buddhi-yogaṁ taṁ yena mām upayānti te Kṛṣṇa directly gives us intelligence, the practice of devotional service. He's there. He's speaking to us. Actually, He's always trying to direct, but it's like when somebody's speaking to you and you're looking into your cell phone and you're not actually paying attention, or your mind is going somewhere else, and then you say, "What'd you say?" And they say, "I just told you." It's like, "Yeah, but I didn't hear you," but it went right in your ear, but I didn't hear you because I didn't give attention. So Kṛṣṇa is speaking to us, but in material life, 'bhayaṁ dvitīyābhiniveśataḥ syād'—I'm absorbed in something else, some other thing besides hearing Kṛṣṇa. Kṛṣṇa consciousness is so simple, it means turning our attention, our awareness, back to listening to Kṛṣṇa. And if we follow four regulative principles, and we chant 16 rounds, and we live in the association of devotees, take prasādam, then gradually we can hear Kṛṣṇa's voice in the buddhi-yoga. He tells us exactly what to tell people, which person needs this, which person needs that, and also guides us on how to move forward in Kṛṣṇa consciousness. Extended mental concentration. If you can practice this, your mind gets better at it. If you practice scrolling, that's what you'll get good at. It's not helpful, because it puts rajas in the mind, and that's one of the reasons we have a problem sitting and concentrating—too much rajas. The mind wants to go somewhere else, somewhere else, somewhere else, but the more we can practice in our japa extended mental concentration and stay focused on hearing the holy name, just the sound vibration, keep coming back to be aware that we're chanting, the stronger it will become. It's like developing a muscle. Because we've come to the end of Navaratri and because many are now finishing their mantra-repetition sādhana (puraścarana), I thought it would be nice to discuss the mantra for offering japa to the Divine Mother:oṁ guhyātiguhyagoptrī tvaṁ gṛhāṇāsmatkṛtaṁ japamsiddhirbhavatu me devi tvatprasādān maheśvari"O You who are the Protectress of the Secret of all Secrets (i.e the sacred, intimate mantra), accept this repetition of mantra done by us! The service that we do is always based on our intention. If we're cooking something or we're dressing The Deities, or let's say, leading a kīrtana, we're chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa. But if that mantra coming from our heart is actually, "Look at me. Look at me. Look at me. Everybody, look at me," it's not the same as if you're expressing, you know, "Kṛṣṇa, You're everything." So the real service comes from that intention of the way you're doing it. And chanting is the time, as I said in the very beginning, when you can fully express that, and even a molecule of that expression of sincerity is what connects us so deeply with Kṛṣṇa, because He's already there waiting for us to look, look in His direction. So you can think of it like that. We find in the case of Śiśupāla, a couple of things happen as he took birth. He was also extremely opulent. You may have noticed in the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, Śiśupāla was materially no slouch. He was practically described as more opulent than Kṛṣṇa. He had so much opulence he was killed by Rāmacandra in his next life. He had all these assets, and we all know that when he was a little child, he began saying the Lord's Names, and it's a chanting, but he was blaspheming Kṛṣṇa. He still had this hatred towards the Lord, and in his last act at the Rājasūya Yajña, where he tried to ruin the whole yajña, he waited till the perfect time to stand up and say, "Kṛṣṇa is not qualified," because previously, they could have taken back the yajña, but after it was already finished, and he said, if they had followed him and said Kṛṣṇa wasn't qualified to be the first one worshiped in this yajña, it would have nullified the whole rājasūya. So he was diabolical in his calculation, because he hated Kṛṣṇa so much, and he stood up in the assembly and began blaspheming Kṛṣṇa. So what happened there? Kṛṣṇa artfully cut off his head—artfully, I say because it was a yajña, he didn't want to spill any blood. So He's so precise in the way He chopped off his head. Sorry, I know it's a family show that no blood hit the ground. What's deeper and what's related to this conversation is that Śiśupāla, in the last moment before his head was severed, drank the beauty of the face of Lord Kṛṣṇa. What's more, he had been chanting Kṛṣṇa's names, and this I brought up at the Japa circle this morning, as mentioned by Rūpa Gosvāmī, there are two main ways that one becomes perfect in this life: one is by saying the names of the Lord, and the other is by seeing His beauty, because it's unparalleled. Rūpa Gosvāmī uses this as proof because Hiraṇyakaśipu saw Lord Nṛsiṁhadev, Rāvaṇa saw Lord Rāmacandra—no liberation. But when Śiśupāla saw Kṛṣṇa and chanted His names, he was liberated at that point. So there's a way in which Kṛṣṇa is Bhagavān Svayam. We have the description of Lord Rāmacandra within the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, but it's by way of comparison to take us through the rasas and bring us to the ultimate conclusion that Kṛṣṇa is the reservoir of all rasas. What's more, His beauty is incomparable even to His other forms. Let's not get it wrong. They're all Kṛṣṇa, but only Kṛṣṇa is Kṛṣṇa, and only those killed by Kṛṣṇa are completely liberated. Kṛṣṇa, in the 11th canto of the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, says to Uddhava, "sve sve 'dhikāre yā niṣṭhā, sa guṇaḥ parikīrtitaḥ, viparyayas tu doṣaḥ syād, ubhayor eṣa niścayaḥ" (SB 11.21.2)—that it's a good quality to know what you can do, what your adhikāra is, what you're capable of doing. He calls it a guṇa, a good quality. And he said "viparyayas tu doṣaḥ syād." Viparyaya means the opposite. If you try to do more than you're qualified for, then he said, it's not a good quality. Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura quotes this and comments on it in Śrī Caitanya-śikṣāmṛta, and he said that the process is like climbing a ladder. If you try to run up the ladder too fast, it's likely that you're going to slip and fall off. Then he said if you're too slow, which means you step on a rung and you know you're there, but then you hesitate to take the next step, he said, then your advancement is going to be slow. He said, so take a steady pace. Remember climbing a ladder—you want to put one foot on, and then take the next step when you feel steady at it. Birds fly in the sky as high as they're able, but the sky is unlimited. So where you are is inconsequential. What is consequential is your sincere desire to advance. Because it's all Kṛṣṇa. It's coming from Kṛṣṇa anyway. The capacity that we have will be bestowed upon us as we increase our sincerity. We can't really do anything on our own anyway, except for try as best we can and really focus on and pray to Kṛṣṇa with our sincerity. And another example that's given in the śāstra about Yaśodā.When she was trying to tie up Kṛṣṇa, the rope was two inches too short.
