This month, Sonic Architect Adam returns to normal recording proceedings and welcomes Molly King to the studio. Molly is the head of development for Other Voices, an annual music festival that takes place in Dingle, County Kerry every winter, bringing together some of the world's biggest acts, as well as the finest Ireland has to offer for a weekend of very special live performances across their Music Trail. The most notable location for these performances is Saint James' Church, which has played host to acts such as Hozier, Kae Tempest, Amy Winehouse, Mark Lanegan, Conor Oberst, Kodaline, Griff, Dermot Kennedy, Fontaines D.C., The National and many, many more. Almost all of their performances and live streams are on their YouTube channel at the link below. In this episode, Adam and Molly discuss the challenges of running a festival, how the re-brand came about and what it represents now, as well as some of Molly's fondest memories in Other Voices over the years, and both of their thoughts on why Other Voices is so highly-regarded not just in Ireland but worldwide as an annual must-attend event.*If you'd like to get this episode and all NO ENCORE episodes a full 24 hours earlier and ad-free, check us out over on Patreon here.*-Other Voices WebsiteTickets for Other Voices Cardigan '24Follow Other Voices on YouTube / Instagram / Facebook / TikTok / XFollow Molly King on Instagram / XSouth Wind Blows on Instagram / X Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Diana Bunici is a talented Irish journalist and broadcaster who made a name for herself presenting a popular children's TV show on RTÈ, the national broadcaster. From the outset it seemed like she had it all; a dream job, on the cover of magazines, and a great boyfriend. But when you hear her story of how she got to where she is today, it's much more impressive and interesting. Diana grew up in rural Moldova in Eastern Europe. Money was scare, life was simple, and opportunities were few and far between. But thanks to her parent's sacrifice and determination, they moved to Ireland and embarked on a new life. In this podcast Diana talks about what it was like starting life in a new country, and trying to fit in with your school mates. She speaks about her time working in television and the insecurity she was feeling around that time, always afraid of how others would perceive her. And we talk about her engagement to Kodaline singer, Steve Garrigan. Here is Diana Bunici's story. instagram.com/colmflynnire

We had the pleasure of interviewing St. Lundi over Zoom video! At the age of 20, St. Lundi left his hometown of Hayling Island (off the coast of Portsmouth, UK), to follow his dream of becoming an artist. Employment opportunities were limited on ‘The Island' and he whilst working in a petrol station and living with his grandparents, he left with under £100 in his bank account, booking a 1 way ticket to London. He soon ran out of money and played an open mic night, where luckily he was spotted by some Australian backpackers who offered him a couch to stay on for as long as he wants in their shared digs. This couch became St. Lundi's home for the next 9 months, intermittently being relegated to sleeping in a stairwell when his hosts were partying. He soon found a job as a teaching assistant at a local school for children with learning disabilities and started building a life for himself, whilst gracing the stages of basement venues and open mic nights throughout London in the evenings. At this point, he was spotted by the label owner of Good Taste Recordings and after signing, they started working on a debut EP in late 2019. St. Lundi's debut single was released in March 2020, one week before the UK entered full lockdown.Whilst this spelled disaster for many, it was an excellent opportunity for St. Lundi to hone his skills as a songwriter. He was set up with a home studio and booked in for several remote writing sessions a week over this lockdown period. After just a couple of months, his first big break happened, with Kygo taking a song he wrote called ‘To Die For' and releasing it on his 2020 Gold selling album ‘Golden Hour'. Later this year, he also featured on Seeb's Platinum awarded album ‘Sad In Scandinavia' with a song called ‘Colourblind'.In 2021, St. Lundi wrote his top performing song to date titled ‘Nights Like This'. The song documents his first date with his first (and only) love Josefine. The song entered the radio charts in Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, Norway and Portugal, as well as amassing over 70 million streams to date. Fans from all over the world have used this song as a first dance at their weddings and soundtracked their romances, a fact that he is very proud of.In 2022, with the world opening back up again, St. Lundi focussed on building a live following and played around 100 shows across Europe, supporting Kodaline, Tom Gregory and Leon, whilst working on new material in his rare downtime. This culminated in his debut headline tour, pulling small but enthusiastic audiences of 100-150 people a night across the UK, BeNeLux and GSA in Feb 2023. Around this time, he released ‘Ready To Be Loved', which was the first song to be presented to UK radio and instantly picked up B-list rotation on BBC Radio 2. This was followed by another GSA tour with German chart-topping ClockClock and another single ‘Fall', which was again added to the BBC Radio 2 playlist.Throughout 2023, St. Lundi has perfected his debut album ‘The Island', which is set out now! We want to hear from you! When many people think of the two words “religion” and “spirituality” nowadays they could have memes floating around in their minds and not clear and objective ideas. In this talk, we examine these terms from the ancient Vedic perspective. It is really difficult to cover such an important topic in an abbreviated way, and while this is quite a long talk we have not really covered the topic as extensively as we could have if there was more time. Here are the Vedic texts or verses I quoted: A worshiper who faithfully engages in the worship of the Lord in the temple (church) but does not behave properly toward other worshipers or people in general is called a prākṛta-bhakta, a materialistic devotee, and is considered to be in the lowest position. Bhāgavata Purāṇa 11.2.47 He is a perfect yogī who, by comparison to his own self, sees the true equality of all beings, in both their happiness and their distress, O Arjuna! Bhagavad-gita 6.32 He by whom no one is put into difficulty and who is not disturbed by anyone, who is equipoised in happiness and distress, fear and anxiety, is very dear to Me. Bhagavad-gita 12.15 “The Supreme Soul is very satisfied with the transcendentalist when they greet other people with tolerance, mercy, friendship and equality.” - Bhāgavata Purāṇa 4.11.13 The humble sage, by virtue of true knowledge, sees with equal vision a learned and gentle brahmana, a cow, an elephant, a dog and a dog-eater [outcaste]. Bhagavad-gita 5.18 A person is considered still further spiritually advanced when he regards the honest well-wishers, the affectionate benefactors, the neutral, the mediators, the envious, the friends and enemies, the pious and the sinners all with an equal mind. Bhagavad-gita 6.9 Everything animate or inanimate that is within the universe is controlled and owned by the Lord, Isvara. One should therefore accept only those things necessary for himself, which are set aside as his quota, and one should not accept other things knowing well to whom they belong. Śrī Īśopaniṣad mantra 1 Some look on the soul as amazing, some describe the soul as amazing, and some hear of the soul as amazing, while others, even after hearing about the spiritual being, cannot understand him at all. - Bhagavad-gītā 2.29 In this way the conditioned soul living within the body forgets his self-interest because he identifies himself with the body. Because the body is material, his natural tendency is to be attracted by the varieties of the material world. Thus the living entity suffers the miseries of material existence. Bhāgavata Purāṇa 7.13.28 One who is enlightened in self-realization, although living within the material body, sees himself as transcendental to the body, just as one who has arisen from a dream gives up identification with the dream body. Bhāgavata Purāṇa 11.11.8 This is the truth: As sparks of similar form spring forth by the thousands from a strongly blazing fire, so from the Absolute Truth are produced the various living beings, O gentle one, and there also do they go. - Muṇḍaka Upaniṣad 2:1:1 As tiny sparks fly from a fire, so all the individual souls have come from the Supreme. - Bṛhad-āraṇyaka Upaniṣad, 2.2.20 The same jīva is eternal and is for eternity and without a beginning joined to the Supreme Lord by the tie of an eternal kinship. He is transcendental spiritual potency. - Śrī Brahma-saṁhitā 5.21 He who sees systematically everything in relation to the Supreme Lord, who sees all living entities as His parts and parcels, and who sees the Supreme Lord within everything never hates anything or any being. - Śrī Īśopaniṣad mantra 6 The kirtan at the end is a cover of "All I want" by Kodaline

It is an honor to welcome back Voices of Service to The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast. In 2012, military veterans Ron Henry, Christal Realms, Jason Hanna, and Caleb Green formed the quartet and have sung together ever since. The Voices of Service became household names in 2019 when they auditioned for NBC's talent competition, America's Got Talent. The group's spectacular harmonies received praise from Simon Cowell, Howie Mandel, and former judges Gabrielle Union and Julianne Hough. The group reached the Season 14 finale, where they placed fifth. In 2020, Voices of Service performed during the America's Got Talent – The Champions: Season Two qualifiers. Despite not advancing to the Semifinals, Cowell, Mandel, Heidi Klum, and Britain's Got Talent judge Alesha Dixon joined the audience in giving them a standing ovation for their potent cover of Kodaline's “Brother.” That same year, the group released their first four-song extended play, Rise, which contained the original tune “Let Me Raise My Voice.” In 2021 and 2022, the quartet released original songs “Come Home” and “Hope” respectively. They also dropped a holiday EP, Deck the Halls, in 2022 that featured the group's interpretations of “Deck the Halls,” “Joy to the World,” and “Sleigh Ride.” In this episode of The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, Voices of Service discussed whether they would be interested in returning to compete for another AGT spin-off and talked about touring life.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/jake-s-take-with-jacob-elyachar--4112003/support.

We are slowly running out of energy. We have a lot to do to school, all the assignments, exams, etc and we really need a break. But at the same time, we are trying to enjoy some nice things, such as our cooking class that we finished last week! (Well, not really..) We enjoyed thst very much. Kristýna went to get drinks with the group afterwards but Lauren went home because she is STILL sick. Oh yeah, and she had to go to the hospital. And not to forget, we went to yet another cocnert (Kodaline), unfortunately, the last one of this semester. This time we talked about friendships. Kristýna discovered that there is such a thing as low maintenance friendship and actually has had a couple of them. Making friends is such a weird but natural concept that you don't think about until you grow up, move abroad and get cut off from all of your life long ones. At first, it might seem intimidating but with time you realise, how natural process it is and how cool it is to keep meeting new people. Because every individual person brings something different and special to your life. Or it might be just a passerby, who appeared in your life for a certain reason as well. We both came to the conclusion that you have to treat friendships the same way as romantic or family relationships. And communication is key! This is the 1st part of a series called “My Life's Compass” that deals with the need to have clear guiding principles in life. It begins with a profound statement by a leading environmental scientist: “I used to think that top environmental problems were biodiversity loss, ecosystem collapse, and climate change. I thought that thirty years of good science could address these problems. I was wrong. The top environmental problems are selfishness, greed, and apathy, and to deal with these we need a cultural and spiritual transformation. And we scientists don't know how to do that.” – Gus Speth, American environmental lawyer and advocate former dean of the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, former Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme. Most of us are unaware that this greed, envy, apathy, and underlying selfishness have actually been intentionally cultivated in the wider society. In the early 1920's a quiet revolution was started to bring about a drastic social change. Banker Paul Mazur of Lehman Brothers famously wrote: "We must shift America from a needs, to a desires culture. People must be trained to desire, to want new things even before the old had been entirely consumed. We must shape a new mentality in America. Man's desires must overshadow his needs." A new kind of advertising was key to make this possible, and the pioneer in this field was Edward Bernays, the nephew of Sigmund Freud, who showed corporations how to make people want things they didn't need by linking mass-produced goods to unconscious desires. But by the 1970s the adverse effects were obvious. British Economist E.F. Schumacher wrote: “Economic progress, [the economist] Keynes counseled, is obtainable only if we employ those powerful human drives of selfishness, which religion and traditional wisdom universally call upon us to resist. The modem economy is propelled by a frenzy of greed and indulges in an orgy of envy, and these are not accidental features but the very causes of its expansionist success. The question is whether such causes can be effective for long or whether they carry within themselves the seeds of destruction.” This shift in consciousness towards consumerism required a convergence of 1) the messaging that consumption is all-desirable and the new “God”, and 2) the gradual abandonment of traditional values and morality through the undermining of the value of religion. So the big question is – what will replace traditional ethics and morality as the compass for our journey of life? How do we address selfishness, greed, and apathy? What are the guiding principles for my life? The ending kirtan is sung to the Kodaline cover "All I Want"

TRIGGER WARNING: Discussions of Depression, Panic Attacks, and brief mentions of suicidal ideation The biggest misconception we both had about becoming “famous” is that fame would make us happy.  In this episode we reflect on how we really felt mentally when we thought we had “made it” in Hollywood and how we learned through some of our biggest 90210 years that mental health does not discriminate. We also bring in the ultimate rockstar and frontman of Kodaline, Steve Garrigan, to give us a male perspective on his struggles with anxiety, depression, and severe panic attacks.  Steve experienced his own mental health battle, both literally and figuratively behind the curtain, for years before sharing his story with close family, friends, and now the rest of the world. If you're interested in hearing more about Steve's story, you can grab a copy of his book High Hopes, anywhere books are sold.  Visit Clare at www.clare.com/unzipped and use code UNZIPPED to receive $5 off your first gallon of paint.  Produced by Dear Media

This week, Jarlath is joined by Kodaline frontman Steve Garrigan for a one of a kind conversation about his life and career. Steve speaks frankly about the painful shyness that dominated his early years and how his parents tried to help him. Later Jarlath asks about the devastating effects of tasting fame in your Leaving Cert year and how he wrote Kodaline's hit single High Hopes at a time when he felt like he had hit rock bottom.   From the hilarious accounts of his earliest roles as a Pokemon and making an absolute fool of himself in front of Tony Hawk (without whom Kodaline would not exist) as well as his sobering account of the terrifying panic attack he experienced at the age of 20 and much more, this is a fascinating conversation with one of Ireland's top musical talents.   Steve's book High Hopes is available in all good bookstores and the list of cognitive distortions that is referenced in the interview can be found here https://positivepsychology.com/cognitive-distortions/   To hear every episode in full and to gain access to the entire back-catalogue of over 500 Irishman Abroad episodes that are not available on iTunes for just the price of a pint every month visit www.patreon.com/irishmanabroad Supplementary research provided by John Meagher. A stunningly told and deeply personal memoir from the lead singer of Irish rockband Kodaline. Lead singer of the hugely successful Irish rock band Kodaline, Steve Garrigan plays to thousands of fans worldwide - his business is being in the spotlight. But for years, Steve was privately battling his own demons. Here in this deeply personal memoir, he shares his experiences. From his childhood growing up in Dublin and the shyness that only dissolved when he was playing an instrument or in front of a microphone, to the highs of rock star success touring and playing stadiums, to the lows of anxiety, depression and panic attacks and how he was to discover that it was only by sharing his deepest vulnerability that he was able to work through the darkness. High Hopes is the candid account of how everyone carries a story - and how by embracing all the different parts of our true selves, we will ultimately find freedom and happiness.

Ryan is a local lad, not too far up the road from me. His story is very similar to many of us, plays GAA, he went to Uni, travelled Australia and spent some time in the USA during his studiesBut something magic happened. He became one of the biggest singer and song writers to come out of Ireland and has toured all over the world with Ed Sheeran, Kodaline, Snow Patrol, Foy Vance The Corona's and Dermot Kennedy. I caught up with Ryan just before he performed to 40,000 people over the weekend, headlining with Dermot Kennedy. He discusses how music was always on the back burner but meeting his idol Foy Vance while flipping burgers in America changed everything. Vance asked him what he had to say when it came to his art. And he didn't have an answer. He only sang covers. This sparked a fire in Ryan's belly to write his own songs and the rest... is history. Foy Vance is now his mentor. Tune in to this fantastic episode, what an inspiring story. This podcast is sponsored by  Gym+Coffee Gym+Coffee is Ireland's leading athleisure brand and community. Pulling Favours with Mark & Rory

On this week's episode of Pulling Favours, Mark and Rory talk a man who has played a key role in the rise of artists such as The Script, Kodaline, The Academic and many more - producer extraordinaire, Philip Magee. From taking tapes apart as a child, to his own influences in music, to who he thinks will be the next big thing in Irish music, Philip talks openly about it all - and what it is that stands out to him during the recording process. This is one of the most enjoyable chats that the boys have had to date, and definitely an insight for artists, producers and music fans alike.
