Since the late nineteenth century, amusement parks have been providing countless hours of enjoyment for people all around the world. Often driven by the latest technology and advances in mechanical engineering, the thrill rides at parks like Disney Land, Great America, and other independent parks offer a controlled environment to experience terror and excitement. While these rides, and the parks in general, are very safe and held to strict safety standards, there are times when the unthinkable happens—a cable snaps, a safety harness breaks—and the once safe ride becomes a nightmare for passengers. Far more often than not, tragic amusement park accidents are the result of human foolishness or, far less often, operator error. But other times, they are a bizarre fluke; a one in a million mechanical problem no one saw coming. Either way, the results can be shocking, horrifying, and even deadly. Jagai and Madhai were born in respectable brahmana families, but they adopted the professions of thieves and rogues and thus became implicated in all kinds of undesirable activities, especially woman-hunting, intoxication and gambling. Even going to Jaipur—it was like one of those bumpy roads that we went on yesterday, but for the whole way. Now it's nicer, but it still takes an extra eight hours to go to Karaulī. But going to see Madana-mohana there is a heartfelt experience—to see the devotees and how they love that Deity. Madana-mohana represents attraction to the spiritual world; this is sambandha-jñāna. In many philosophical systems, there is no conception of attraction. There is only renunciation. Dry renunciation of the material world means: "Because I've been victimized again and again by my senses and by the sense objects, I decide that I will cultivate detachment and become free from the tyranny of my senses." Some take it a step further and they say, "Let me have no senses. Let me become nothing." In the concept of Nirvāṇa, as given by some, there is a candle flame; if you blow it out, then there is no candle flame. The idea is that the experience we're having now in this world—that I'm conscious, I'm aware, I love, I hate, I have emotions—is all the process of material nature. It's happenstance. And by my meditation, I'll come to a point of realizing that I'm not that awareness. I'm not anything. I'm not part of the process; I'm not the process; there is no process. There isn't anything, and I'll achieve nothingness. But even that nomenclature is the problem. Consciousness is something you cannot deny, because as soon as you deny, it is an act of consciousness. Therefore, Kṛṣṇa in the Bhagavad-gītā says (BG 3.5): na hi kaścit kṣaṇam api jātu tiṣṭhaty akarma-kṛt kāryate hy avaśaḥ karma sarvaḥ prakṛti-jair guṇaiḥ The soul is always active. We want something, and especially, we want love. So Madana-mohana brings the clarion call to us: "I am your beloved. Here, you can become attracted, and you don't have to fear the loss of our relationship." Prabhupāda tells about how, when we approach Kṛṣṇa—in Deity worship, the arcana process—it is so sweet and personal that sometimes the servitor installs the Deity and worships in such a heartfelt way that the relationship is so "thick." He mentions in a purport that after that servitor passes away, the Deity performs the piṇḍa ceremony for His servitor out of love for the servant. So, when we come to Kṛṣṇa consciousness, we are not left with nothing, or we are not asked to recede into the void. As we say, "namas te sārasvate deve gaura-vāṇī-pracāriṇe"—we are hearing Gaura-vāṇī—"nirviśeṣa-śūnyavādi-pāścātya-deśa-tāriṇe." Śrīla Prabhupāda relieved us of that Where's the entry place? We must go to the presence of that great soul, Nityananda. 5) You will buy the name of Krsna, I will take my commission and all of our desires will be fulfilled. 6) Lord Nityananda is greatly merciful. In the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (SB 3.31.1), it is mentioned: karmaṇā daiva-netreṇa jantur dehopapattaye striyāḥ praviṣṭa udaraṁ puṁso retaḥ-kaṇāśrayaḥ The living entity, who is helplessly controlled by the three modes of material nature, gets placed by daiva (higher control) into various material forms. For instance, right now we're in a body—check and see if you're still in it. You are there? Everyone okay? Yeah, we're in a body right now. We won't be here for very long. You know how long life is? It's about the length of a "reel." How long is a reel? Is there a clear definition? I can't figure it out if there's actually a definition of how long a reel is. Does anybody actually know? You guys don't look at the phone ever? You've never seen a reel, huh? Audience: "A minute or less." A minute or less. Okay, that's how long the human life is. It's about a minute or less. Could be ten seconds, even. And we're in many different "reels." So, karmaṇā daiva-netreṇa—we're placed in different bodies and we have a little "reel-life." Not R-E-A-L, but R-E-E-L-life. 'Karmaṇā daiva-netreṇa jantur dehopapattaye striyāḥ praviṣṭa udaraṁ'... we just wake up one day and everyone says, "Welcome to your new family!" And it could be a squirrel family. Or you could be a fish in the water. Fishes are in schools, and then there are flocks of birds. You can end up in a flock, or you can end up in a pack. Or crows—they are called a "murder." A "murder of crows." That's how you group them. So, we're forced by material nature. But gṛhṇato 'nuyugaṁ tanūḥ (SB 10.8.13) means Kṛṣṇa Bhagavān, the Supreme, is not forced. He comes by choice. Or as Prabhupāda puts it in his book, Kṛṣṇa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, He comes by His own "sweet will." We also have willpower, but it doesn't give us autonomy—complete autonomy. Kṛṣṇa has complete autonomy. He's abhijñaḥ (completely conscious of everything) and svarāṭ (completely independent). He can do as He wishes, never forced by anything or anyone. This is what Garga Muni said about the appearance of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, otherwise known as Bhagavān, the source of everything and all opulences. He said: "āsan varṇās trayo hy asya gṛhṇato 'nuyugaṁ tanūḥ." Tanūḥ means He has different bodies. Now, His body is different from the body of a soul that's placed in a material body. Our body is.. (3) Lord Caitanya has sat down on a jeweled throne, and the demigods, headed by Lord Brahmā, perform the ārati ceremony. (4) Narahari Sarakāra and other associates of Lord Caitanya fan Him with cāmaras, and devotees headed by Sañjaya Paṇḍita, Mukunda Datta, and Vāsu Ghoṣa sing sweet kīrtana. (5) Conchshells, bells, and karatālas resound, and the mṛdaṅgas play very sweetly. This kīrtana music is supremely sweet and relishable to hear. (6) The brilliance of Lord Caitanya's face conquers millions upon millions of moons, and the garland of forest flowers around His neck shines. (7) Lord Śiva, Śukadeva Gosvāmī, and Nārada Muni are all there, and their voices are choked with the ecstasy of transcendental love. We should have every year the 'Best Purport Awards.' This is what I'm going to enter. (HG Vaisesika Dasa) Kṛṣṇadāsa Kavirāja Gosvāmī wants to point out that nothing could compare to the Lord's mercy toward Mahārāja Pratāparudra; therefore he uses the word dekha (“just see”) and caitanyera kṛpā-mahābala (“how powerful is the mercy of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu”). This is also confirmed by Prabodhānanda Sarasvatī: yat-kāruṇya-kaṭākṣa-vaibhava-vatām (Caitanya-candrāmṛta 5). Even a little of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu's mercy serves as a great asset for spiritual advancement. Therefore the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement must be spread through the mercy of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. When Rūpa Gosvāmī experienced the mercy and magnanimity of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, he said: namo mahā-vadānyāya kṛṣṇa-prema-pradāya te kṛṣṇāya kṛṣṇa-caitanya- nāmne gaura-tviṣe namaḥ “I offer my respectful obeisances unto the Supreme Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya, who is more magnanimous than any other avatāra, even Kṛṣṇa Himself, because He is bestowing freely what no one else has ever given — pure love of Kṛṣṇa.” Śrīla Locana dāsa Ṭhākura has also sung, parama karuṇa, pahuṅ dui jana, nitāi-gauracandra: “The two brothers Nitāi and Gaura are so kind that no one can compare to Them.” Similarly, Śrīla Narottama dāsa Ṭhākura has sung: vrajendra-nandana yei, śacī-suta haila sei, balarāma ha-ila nitāi, dīna-hīna yata chila, hari-nāme uddhārila, tā'ra sākṣī jagāi-mādhāi “Just to deliver all the sinful persons of this age by propagating the chanting of the holy name, Lord Kṛṣṇa and Lord Balarāma have advented as Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu and Nityānanda Prabhu. Jagāi and Mādhāi are evidence of Their success.” Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu's special mission is the deliverance of all fallen souls in Kali-yuga. If one is captivated by the pleasing pastimes of Lord Caitanya, the dirty things in his heart will all become cleansed. 2) One who simply takes the holy name of Gaura-sundara, Sri Krsna Caitanya, will immediately develop love of God. To such a person I say: Bravo! Very nice! Excellent! If one appreciates the merciful pastimes of Lord Caitanya and feels ecstasy and sometimes cries, this process will immediately help him to understand the eternal pastimes of Radha-Krsna. 3) Simply by understanding that the associates of Lord Gauranga are eternally free from material contamination, one can immediately be promoted to the transcendental abode of Lord Krsna. If one simply understands that the land of Navadvipa is not different from Vrndavana, then he actually lives in Vrndavana. 4) If one says: "Let me dive deep into the waves of the nectarean ocean of the transcendental loving movement introduced by Lord Caitanya", he immediately becomes one of the confidential devotees of Radha and Krsna. It does not matter whether one is a householder living at home or a vanaprastha or sannyasi living in the forest, if he chants "O Gauranga, and becomes a devotee of Lord Caitanya, then Narottama dasa begs to have his association. Those who take shelter of Lord Nityānanda Prabhu, who is merciful to all, He is called adoṣa-darśī. He doesn't see the faults in anyone. Adoṣa-darśī means anyone who approaches Him with some eagerness in his or her heart to serve, He empowers them and gives them pure devotional service, which is impossible to get otherwise. So the process of devotional service comes through eka-cakra and comes through Nityānanda and Gaura. Without approaching Lord Caitanya and Lord Nityānanda, it's impossible to enter into Vṛndāvana. Narottama dāsa Ṭhākura writes in his famous bhajan about how when one dives into the ocean of the pastimes of Lord Caitanya and Lord Nityānanda, which are the pastimes of saṅkīrtana, then one comes out on the shore of the ocean of Rādhā-Kṛṣṇa pastimes. So, by performing vaidhī bhakti over many, many lifetimes, one may attain Vaikuṇṭha, says Kavirāja Gosvāmī. But if one approaches Lord Nityānanda and Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu in service in the saṅkīrtana movement, then one can easily come to the highest position in the spiritual world, Goloka Vṛndāvana, where spontaneous love is flowing. 'Brahmāṇḍa bhramite kono bhāgyavān jīva guru-kṛṣṇa-kṛpāya pāya bhakti-latā-bīja' (CC. Madhya 19.151) means we are aimlessly moving from one body to the next, one universe to the next, and then, by the grace of Kṛṣṇa, one gets a guru, by the grace of the Guru, one gets Kṛṣṇa. And so, Lord Nityānanda is the original guru, and he reveals the importance of Śrī Chaitanya Mahāprabhu to all the devotees and reveals that He's the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Caitanya Mahāprabhu took sanyāsa and He headed for this place, Jagannātha Puri. And this is a stop before you get to Puri. It's about six miles away. Of course, they were walking; this is pretty far along from Navadvīpa when they stopped here. From the Caitanya Charitāmrita you will note that they stopped in various places and what did they do? They engaged in Kṛṣṇa Kathā. In fact Nityānanda had heard from others the story of Kṣīra-corā gopīnātha. He told that story here, and the devotees just enjoyed it. Everything was going fine until Śrī Chaitanya Mahāprabhu asked Nityānanda to hold his dandā. You know when you ask somebody to hold your bead bag and say you'll be right back? Then you come back and say, "Where's my bag?" "Oh, I don't have it anymore." I never had that happen, but somebody actually cut off my śikhā when they were helping buzz me up. Since then, I learned how to do it myself. They thought it was funny. I didn't think it was that funny. They were like, "ha ha ha, it'll grow back." It's a big deal to a brahmacārī, okay? So, Nityānanda had broken his dandā in three parts and threw it away, apparently in this river. When Caitanya Mahāprabhu came back and asked for His dandā, Nitai said, "You know, you broke it because you were in ecstasy. I tried to save you from fainting, and we both fell on the dandā and it broke and now it's gone." He had different excuses for why the dandā was gone. Now both Vṛndāvana Dāsa Ṭhākura and ā Dāsa Kavirāja Gosvāmī, and then our ācāryas like Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura, mention the importance of this pastime. It is still enigmatic, even though they give different descriptions, because it's enigmatic in and of itself that Supreme is one, but He expands Himself into many. That's why I brought up that verse 'Vadanti tat tattva-vidas tattvaṁ yaj jñānam advayam' in an attempt to build a foundational basis for this talk today. Because there's a way in which it's incomprehensible how the Supreme is everything and He is one, advaya but at the same time he has variety. But it makes a lot of sense to me anyway because the Supreme is all-cognizant, full of bliss, eternality, and ānanda. and that's why I also mentioned that for there to be ananda there has to be loving relationship. So, how is this a significant and loving relationship between Caitanya Mahāprabhu and Lord Nityānanda? Why did He break the dandā? Even more mysteriously, why did Caitanya Mahāprabhu dictate from within that Nityānanda should break the dandā? It is even more curious why Caitanya Mahāprabhu then became angry if he's the one, as Vṛndāvana Dāsa Ṭhākura says, who inspired Nitāi to break it the first place? Lord Nityananda Himself has opened a market-place of the Holy Name in Surabhi-Kunja. 2) The news of its great results is that He is selling the pure Holy Name in that market-place for the price of only one's faith. 3) Lord Nityananda, the proprietor of the market, seeing all the devotees become attracted, is selling them the Holy Name after bargaining with them. 4) O brother, if you want to buy the Holy Name, then go with me. We must go to the presence of that great soul, Nityananda. 5) You will buy the name of Krsna, I will take my commission and all of our desires will be fulfilled. 6) Lord Nityananda is greatly merciful. Taking only one's faith, He gives the highest ecstasy. 7) If Nitai sees only once tears in the eyes while chanting the name "Gaura", then He gives all resources to that person. 8) He gives the pure teachings of Krsna to everyone and does not care for one's birth, wealth, knowledge and strength. 9) Now, giving up the illusory snare of Maya, either remain in household life or in the forest as a sannyasi for no more troubles remain. 10) There is no more fear of the age of Kali. The merciful Nityananda gives the Holy Name to even the candalas. 11) Bhaktivinoda calls out "Except for the lotus feet of Lord Nityananda there is no other shelter!"
