t's been10 days since siblings Lily and Jack Sullivan were reported missing by their mother in rural Canada, with no sightings of the two.The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) have scoured through dense forest with 160 trained volunteers alongside drones and K9 units, before announcing mid-week that they would "scale back" search efforts, The Guardian reported. After days of searching around Pictou County where Jack, 4, and Lily, 6, were last seen at home, Sergeant Robert McCamon said confidence was dropping in finding the siblings. What happened to these two children? In late 1931, several Native trappers in Aklavik, Northwest Territories, reported to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) that a newly arrived white man, Albert Johnson, had been tampering with their traps. The RCMP dispatched two officers to Johnson's remote cabin, but he refused to speak with them, so they left to get a warrant to search his home. When the officers returned and tried to gain entry, Johnson fired a shotgun blast through the cabin door, wounding one of the RCMP officers. The incident quickly escalated when a posse of RCMP officers returned and tossed dynamite into the cabin, initiating a firefight in which one officer was killed, and a manhunt that would last more than month and unfold across more than 150 miles of some of the roughest terrain in the world. In the end, Albert Johnson would not be taken alive. And while his death may have ended the wild pursuit across the Yukon territory, it was just the beginning of another mystery that would endure into the twenty-first century.Thank you to the Incredible Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research and Writing support!ReferencesCanadian Press. 1932. In this episode, Dave Thompson interviews Bruce Pitt-Payne, a former major crime investigator with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), about the evolution of interviewing techniques. They discuss the shift from confession seeking to information gathering, the benefits of recording interviews, and the challenges of implementing change in the field. They also explore the Mr. Big technique used in undercover operations and the importance of rapport and vulnerability in interviews. The conversation highlights the phased interview model and the PEACE model as effective frameworks for conducting interviews. In this conversation, Bruce Pitt-Payne and Dave Thompson discuss various aspects of interviewing and communication strategies. They explore the different behaviors of interviewees and how to navigate them effectively. They also emphasize the importance of following scientific principles in communication and avoiding biases and prejudices. Truths: The shift in interviewing techniques from confession seeking to information gathering has led to more effective and ethical interviews. Recording interviews is crucial for accuracy, transparency, and accountability. Understanding vulnerability and adapting to the individual being interviewed is essential for building rapport and obtaining reliable information. Implementing change in interviewing techniques can be challenging due to resistance and the need for continuous learning. The phased interview model and the PEACE model provide effective frameworks for conducting interviews. Different interviewees may exhibit different behaviors, such as remaining silent, judging the interviewer, or trying to manipulate the conversation. It is important to recognize and respect an interviewee's right to choose whether or not to speak. Following scientific principles in communication is crucial, as anecdotal evidence may not represent best practices. We are all biased and prejudiced to some extent, so it is important to be aware of our own biases and strive to minimize their influence in the interview process.
What more can Canada do to assist Ukraine as the world marks the two-year anniversary of Russia's invasion? ‘The West Block' host Mercedes Stephenson sits down with retired general Rick Hillier, the former chief of defence staff and member of the Ukrainian World Congress's Strategic Advisory Council, about Canada's role in supporting Ukraine and the plight of Ukrainian refugees. Hillier also discusses what's needed to improve the state of the Canadian Armed Forces. Plus, Stephenson interviews Dan Stanton, the former executive manager at the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS), about the dangers of insider threats at highly critical institutions like nuclear power plants and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).

Mayorkas made the remarks when meeting privately with agents in Eagle Pass, Texas, according to three Border Patrol sources who were in the room and heard the remarks themselves. The conversation happened during the muster for agents in the busy border area. Fox is told Mayorkas was asked directly about comments he made on "Special Report" last week when he was asked by anchor Bret Baier about reporting that over 70% of migrants are released into the U.S. each day. "It would not surprise me at all. I know the data," Mayorkas said. "And I will tell you that when individuals are released, they are released into immigration enforcement proceedings. They are on alternatives to detention. And we have returned or removed a record number of individuals. We are enforcing the laws that Congress has passed. " Fox is told that on Monday agents pushed him on those remarks, saying that the number is even higher than 70%, and then Mayorkas acknowledged a release rate of "above 85%." Mayorkas had also said last week on "Special Report" that "well more than a million" migrants are released into the U.S. annually, and argued repeatedly that it is up to Congress to provide more funding and immigration reform to fix what he has called a "broken" system. He said that the agency is limited in detention capacity by funding provided by Congress. "When somebody enters the country, we place them in immigration enforcement proceedings pursuant to immigration law, and if their claim for relief, their claim to remain in the United States succeeds, then by law they are able to stay here," he said. The remarks come just two days before the House Homeland Security Committee holds its first impeachment hearing, featuring multiple state attorneys general who will testify about the impact the crisis has had on their states. The hearing on Wednesday marks the first impeachment hearing after a year of investigations and reports by the House Homeland Security Committee which looked at the handling of the nearly three-year migrant crisis. Republicans have blamed the historic migrant crisis, which saw 302,000 migrant encounters last month alone on Biden-era policies, including the releases of migrants into the interior -- dubbed "catch-and-release." They have pointed to the broad use of parole, as well as narrowed ICE enforcement and the stopping of wall construction. The administration says it is dealing with a hemisphere-wide crisis and needs more funding and comprehensive immigration reform from Congress. It has claimed it is expanding "lawful migration pathways" and increasing consequences for illegal entry, but can only do so much with a "broken" system. Mayorkas and other DHS officials have said that it has removed or returned more than 470,000 people since May, which is more than in the entirety of FY 2019. At a press availability later on Monday, Mayorkas highlighted the removals and returns, saying it is more than in any other five-month period in the last 10 years. "In fact, the majority of all Southwest Border migrant encounters throughout this Administration have been removed, returned, or expelled – the majority of them," he said. "We are doing everything we can, within a broken system, to incentivize noncitizens to use lawful pathways, to impose consequences on those who do not, and to reduce irregular migration." The White House has also requested $14 billion in border funding from Congress as part of its emergency supplemental spending proposal, but that is being held up as Republicans demand significantly more restrictions on the release of migrants into the interior. Mayorkas said last week that it was that broken system, not administration policy, which was the magnet drawing migrants to the border. Separately, the administration last week announced a lawsuit against the state of Texas after Gov. Greg Abbott signed a law that allows state and local law enforcement to arrest illegal immigrants. The lawsuit claims that the law is unconstitutional and interferes with the federal government's authority on immigration matters. https://thenationalpulse.com/2024/01/09/listen-hot-mic-catches-journos-joking-about-trump-being-assassinated-like-jfk-take-a-convertible/ Hot Mic Catches Journos Joking About Trump Being Assassinated Microphones caught journalists waiting for Donald Trump to arrive at the E. Barrett Prettyman Courthouse in Washington D.C. joking about the president being assassinated on Tuesday. Trump is attending the D.C. Court of Appeals to hear the opening oral arguments in his appeal against Jack Smith’s efforts to prosecute him over January 6th, and journalists gathered outside the courthouse in substantial numbers ahead of his arrival. Two of them could be heard in live feeds joking about having a “good shot” at the America First leader when he arrived, particularly if he showed up driving a convertible like the one the late President John F. Kennedy was riding in when he was shot in the head in 1963: https://twitter.com/i/status/1744738203616399859 - Play Video If you couldn’t hear what they said: First Journalist: You know what the worst part is? Even if he has his window open and he’s hanging out of it, he will be on the other side of the street. Second Journalist: I mean, if he’s driving, we’ve got a good shot! First Journalist: Yeah, if he’s driving with the front window open? Second Journalist: Yeah, or if it’s a convertible? First Journalist: Yeah. I wasn’t thinking about that. First Journalist: Like JFK? Second Journalist: (laughs) Trump’s hearing is being overseen by a panel of two Joe Biden-appointed judges and one George H. W. Bush-appointed judge. His lawyers argue the Smith prosecution amounts to double jeopardy, as Trump was already tried and acquitted over January 6th by the U.S. Senate, and that Smith is also violating the principle of presidential immunity for official acts. https://www.dailyfetched.com/man-finds-iphone-that-fell-out-alaska-air-1282-perfectly-intact/ Man Discovers iPhone That Fell Out of Alaska Air 1282: ‘Perfectly Intact’ A Portland man recovered a cell phone, which is believed to be owned by a passenger of Alaska Airlines flight 1282 after it was sucked out of the plane when the door plug blew open. Writing on X, the man, Sean Bates, posted a photo of the phone: “Found an iPhone on the side of the road,” he wrote. “Still in airplane mode with half a battery and open to a baggage claim for #AlaskaAirlines ASA1282.” Bates found the phone when he was out walking before posting it on social media, which also showed what appeared to be an Alaska Airlines baggage flight receipt. The image showed the baggage receipt for the traveler and a piece of a charger still stuck into the phone’s charging port. Bates claimed the phone was “perfectly” intact with “no scratches on it.” In a TikTok video, Bates said he was walking in Portland on Sunday after the National Transportation Safety Bureau asked him to report any debris or plane parts. The door for the plane was also recovered after another Portland resident named Bob found the plug in his yard, “Thank you, Bob,” NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy said at a news conference. Bates found one of the two cell phones that were recovered. Last week, Alaska Airlines flight was forced to make an emergency landing after its passenger window blew open. The Boeing 737 Max was heading to Ontario, California w, when a large window busted open, causing severe depressurization. Alaska Airlines CEO Ben Minicucci said in a statement: “Following tonight’s event on Flight 1282, we have decided to take the precautionary step of temporarily grounding our fleet of 65 Boeing 737-9 aircraft.” “My heart goes out to those who were on this flight – I am so sorry for what you experienced.” Video footage showed the plane in the air with the window open as oxygen masks angled over passengers’ seats. https://www.dailyfetched.com/rebel-news-reporter-arrested-by-trudeaus-police-for-asking-a-question/ Rebel News Reporter Arrested by Trudeau’s Police for Asking a Question David Menzies, the reporter for Canada’s conservative Rebel News Network, was arrested on Monday for asking Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland a question. A police officer reportedly accused Menzies of assault despite the reporter not making any physical contact with Freeland. The video of the incident, posted by Rebel News chief Ezra Levant, showed Enzies asking Freeland about Canada’s refusal to label Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IGRC) as a terrorist organization. The video shows Menzies keeping pace with the Deputy Prime Minister as he walks down the street when a Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) stands in his way and begins claiming Menzies “assaulted” him. Menzies does not appear to notice the RCMP officer because his attention is on Freeland. The officer then appears to set a “pick,” basketball-style, as a pretext for accusing Menzies of assaulting him. However, there is no evidence that Menzies intended to do so. “You’re under arrest for assault,” said the officer. The officer moved Menzies towards a vehicle, identifying himself as police and saying he was under arrest for assault. Menzies said the officer was the person who blocked his way. “I was just scrumming Chrystia Freeland,” he said. The officer acknowledged Menzies was being arrested for assaulting a police officer. In response, he accused him of assaulting him three years ago. Another RCMP officer said Menzies was being arrested because of his actions. This is because he was almost pushing people over. “That was a little bit aggressive for what was happening,” said the officer before the arrest occurred. True North managing editor Andrew Lawton said Menzies was later released. “Have confirmed that Menzies was released without charges,” said Lawton. Mayorkas made the remarks when meeting privately with agents in Eagle Pass, Texas, according to three Border Patrol sources who were in the room and heard the remarks themselves. The conversation happened during the muster for agents in the busy border area. In this week's The Line Podcast, Matt Gurney and Jen Gerson describe Canadian foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly's baffling and bizarre statement about getting Hamas — a genocidal death cult openly committed to exterminating the Jews in Israel — back to the bargaining table. Then they talk about the escalation of antisemitic violence and graffiti in Canada, and in Montreal in particular. Concordia University seems to be a real ground zero for anger against Israel — and Jewish students, by extension. Synagogues in Montreal have been subject to Molotov cocktails, and Jewish schools have been shot at. Gurney et al have read enough history books to have seen this all before; they know where the next act in the play goes from here and they are worried. Oh, and in the midst of all this drama, NSICOP issues a blunt report noting that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) are not equipped to handle national security threats. Great!

What is a "Data Breach"? A data breach is a security violation, in which sensitive, protected or confidential data is copied, transmitted, viewed, stolen, altered or used by an individual unauthorized to do so. What is "Malware"? Malware (a portmanteau for malicious software) is any software intentionally designed to cause disruption to a computer, server, client, or computer network, leak private information, gain unauthorized access to information or systems, deprive access to information, or which unknowingly interferes with the user's computer security and privacy. What is a "Payload"? In the context of a computer virus or worm, the payload is the portion of the malware which performs malicious action; deleting data, sending spam or encrypting data. In addition to the payload, such malware also typically has overhead code aimed at simply spreading itself, or avoiding detection. What is "Phishing"? Phishing is a form of social engineering where attackers deceive people into revealing sensitive information or installing malware such as ransomware. Phishing attacks have become increasingly sophisticated and often transparently mirror the site being targeted, allowing the attacker to observe everything while the victim is navigating the site, and transverse any additional security boundaries with the victim. Social engineering (security) In the context of information security, social engineering is the psychological manipulation of people into performing actions or divulging confidential information. A type of confidence trick for the purpose of information gathering, fraud, or system access, it differs from a traditional "con" in that it is often one of many steps in a more complex fraud scheme. What is "Information Security" (InfoSec)? Information security, sometimes shortened to InfoSec, is the practice of protecting information by mitigating information risks. It is part of information risk management. Information Security Attributes: Confidentiality, Integrity and Availability (C.I.A.). Information Systems are composed in three main portions, hardware, software and communications with the purpose to help identify and apply information security industry standards, as mechanisms of protection and prevention, at three levels or layers: physical, personal and organizational. Essentially, procedures or policies are implemented to tell administrators, users and operators how to use products to ensure information security within the organizations. What is "Risk management"? Risk management is the identification, evaluation, and prioritization of risks followed by coordinated and economical application of resources to minimize, monitor, and control the probability or impact of unfortunate events or to maximize the realization of opportunities. What is a "Vulnerability" (computing)? Vulnerabilities are flaws in a computer system that weaken the overall security of the device/system. Vulnerabilities can be weaknesses in either the hardware itself, or the software that runs on the hardware. What is an "Attack Surface"? The attack surface of a software environment is the sum of the different points (for "attack vectors") where an unauthorized user (the "attacker") can try to enter data to or extract data from an environment. Keeping the attack surface as small as possible is a basic security measure. What is an "Attack Vector"? In computer security, an attack vector is a specific path, method, or scenario that can be exploited to break into an IT system, thus compromising its security. The term was derived from the corresponding notion of vector in biology. An attack vector may be exploited manually, automatically, or through a combination of manual and automatic activity. What is "Standardization"? Standardization is the process of implementing and developing technical standards based on the consensus of different parties that include firms, users, interest groups, standards organizations and governments. Standardization can help maximize compatibility, interoperability, safety, repeatability, or quality. It can also facilitate a normalization of formerly custom processes. List of computer standards. List of technical standard organizations. What is a "Replay attack"? A replay attack is a form of network attack in which valid data transmission is maliciously or fraudulently repeated or delayed. Another way of describing such an attack is: "an attack on a security protocol using a replay of messages from a different context into the intended (or original and expected) context, thereby fooling the honest participant(s) into thinking they have successfully completed the protocol run." What is a "Man-in-the-middle attack"? In cryptography and computer security, a man-in-the-middle, ..., attack is a cyberattack where the attacker secretly relays and possibly alters the communications between two parties who believe that they are directly communicating with each other, as the attacker has inserted themselves between the two parties. What is "Transport Layer Security" (TLS)? Transport Layer Security (TLS) is a cryptographic protocol designed to provide communications security over a computer network. The protocol is widely used in applications such as email, instant messaging, and voice over IP, but its use in securing HTTPS remains the most publicly visible. What is a "Handshake" (computing)?. In computing, a handshake is a signal between two devices or programs, used to, e.g., authenticate, coordinate. An example is the handshaking between a hypervisor and an application in a guest virtual machine. What is Security theater? The practice of taking security measures that are considered to provide the feeling of improved security while doing little or nothing to achieve it. Doug is a firm believer that mentoring begins with a person's personal growth thereby helping to remove any obstacles or barriers to their professional growth and career development. As Doug has found, some of those barriers can be mental health and mental well-being challenges. “You are Not Alone” came from the all to often stigma of people being afraid to ask for help, afraid to step out of the closet and say, “I need help”. Afraid to extend a hand to say, “it's okay I will go with you on this journey.” “You are Not Alone” came from cry for help and increased anxiety and depression from having to wait far to long for treatment and to begin a healing journey. This book provides a solution to that problem. Make sure to check out this episode
Hey Kits! Weekdays at 7-ish Eastern, we livestream The Daily Beaver Morning Show, a (sometimes) quick take on the news, in addition to our usual formats. We are hearing a lot, these days, about alleged election interference by the government of the People's Republic of China, and because this is all about spycraft and intelligence, there's much the general public doesn't not - or could not ever -- know. That's a perfect opportunity for political opportunitsts and charlatans to fill in the blanks with that which they wish / want / need to be true to get you to dance to the tune they're calling. Our very special guest today, Mr. Mubin Shaikh*, shares his expertise in order to help us sift through the narratives. He'll gives us some civics insight, as well some media and political literacy, to equip us with critical thinking guideposts, so as to not have the wool pulled over our eyes. We also touch on the Rouleau report. He was very generous with his time and we are most grateful. So Kits, please settle in for this engaging Monday Morning Beaver Bite / Interview. Today, we talk about: Toronto City Hall Election Speculation; US GOP nomination speculation; Mubin Shaikh on Interference: What You Need to Know to Be Informed Canadians Who Make Us Proud; Our morning show is the purrr-fect thing for busy Kits who are on-the-go, but still want to stay engaged. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaThe killing of Tim McLean occurred on the evening of July 30, 2008. McLean, a 22-year-old Canadian man, was stabbed, beheaded, and cannibalized while riding a Greyhound Canada bus along the Trans-Canada Highway, about 30 km (19 mi) west of Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. On March 5, 2009, his killer, a 40-year-old Chinese-Canadian named Vince Li, was found not criminally responsible for murder and remanded to a high-security mental health facility in Selkirk, Manitoba, where he was detained until his release on May 8, 2015.On July 30, 2008, Tim McLean, a carnival barker, was returning home to Winnipeg after working at a fair in Edmonton. He departed Edmonton on board Greyhound bus 1170 to Winnipeg, via the Yellowhead Highway through Saskatchewan. He sat at the rear, one row ahead of the toilet. At 6:55 p.m., the bus departed from a stop in Erickson, Manitoba, with a new passenger, Vince Weiguang Li. Li, described as a tall man in his 40s, with a shaved head and sunglasses, originally sat near the front of the bus, but moved to sit next to McLean following a scheduled rest stop. McLean "barely acknowledged" Li, then fell asleep against the window pane, headphones covering his ears.According to witnesses, McLean was sleeping with his headphones on when the man sitting next to him suddenly produced a large knife and began stabbing him in the neck and chest. After the attack began, the bus driver pulled to the side of the road, and he and all the other passengers fled the vehicle. The driver and two other men made an attempt to rescue McLean, but were chased away by Li, who slashed at them from behind the locked bus doors. Li ultimately decapitated McLean and displayed his severed head to those standing outside the bus, then returned to McLean's body and began severing other parts and consuming some of McLean's flesh. At 8:30 p.m., the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in Portage la Prairie received a report of a stabbing on a Greyhound bus west of the city. They arrived to find the suspect still on board the bus, being prevented from escaping by another passenger, the bus driver, and a truck driver who had provided a crowbar and a hammer as weapons. The other passengers were huddled at the roadside, some of them crying and vomiting. As the suspect had earlier attempted to escape by driving the bus away, the driver had engaged the emergency immobiliser system, rendering the vehicle inoperable. Witnesses had observed the suspect stabbing and cutting McLean's body with a knife, and carrying McLean's severed head.By 9:00 p.m., police were in a standoff with the suspect and had summoned special negotiators and a heavily armed tactical unit. The suspect alternately paced the length of the bus and defiled the corpse. Police officers then observed Li eating parts of the body. Meanwhile, the stranded passengers were transported from the scene to be interviewed at the Brandon RCMP detachment. RCMP officers reportedly heard Li say, "I have to stay on the bus forever."On July 31, 2008, at 1:30 a.m., the suspect attempted to escape from the bus by breaking through a window. The RCMP arrested Li soon afterward. He was shot with a Taser twice, handcuffed and placed in the back of a police cruiser. Parts of the victim's body, placed in plastic bags, were retrieved from the bus, while his ear, nose and tongue were found in Li's pockets. The victim's eyes and a part of his heart were never recovered and are presumed to have been eaten by Li.Here's how and where you can find Homicide Worldwide Podcast. If you have a show suggestion? please email us at: homicideworldwidepodcast@gmail.comAnd you can always find us on twitter: https://twitter.com/HWWP10Support the show

Unless you are Canadian or live in Canada you may not have heard of the "Highway Of Tears"...we hadn't!... But we feel it is important to highlight the disproportionately high number of women, who have either disappeared without a trace or have been found murdered in or around a 450 mile stretch of Highway that runs between Prince George and Prince Rupert in British Columbia, Canada. The 1969 unsolved rape and murder of Gloria Moody, a 26-year-old mother of two, who was beaten and left to bleed to death just outside Williams Lake, is considered to be its first victim.Since Gloria's death, the total of known victims who have died or disappeared in similar circumstances around the same area is thought to be well over 40, and that is just ones that have been reported! Many but certainly not all of them are Indigenous Canadian women of all ages. The phenomenon became so mysterious and frequent that in 2005 project E-Pana was set up by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) with the sole purpose of solving cases of missing and murdered persons along the Highway of Tears, and although it started with the scope of investigating victims of Highway 16, within a year of formation, it expanded to include victims along Highways 5, 24 and 97, for women who had vanished in similar circumstances. Some of the missing have since been found murdered, although a large proportion of them remain unsolved, even after the emergence of DNA testing... For these victims families, although it is the worst possible outcome, at least they have been able to lay their loved ones to rest. For others, the worst thing is not knowing what has happened to their loved ones who have just vanished off the face of the earth...For them there is no closure, no remains to bury and no explanation. In this episode, we will focus just on disappearances in the hope that it will trigger a memory that could lead to unlocking the mystery of what happened to these women.Episode narrated by Top5sMusic by CO.AG________Our episodes deal with serious and often distressing cases involving serial killers. Today on Bend Don’t Break, your host Chief Neil Dubord is interviewing someone from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) — a first for the podcast! Cathleen Falebrinza is an RCMP officer who first was trained at the RCMP training academy, ‘Depot’, in 2004. When she graduated in 2005, she was posted to Quesnel, British Columbia where she met her future husband, Stuart, who she now has been married to for 14 years and has two stepdaughters with. In 2014 however, life as she knew it changed forever. During her time in the Chilliwack Serious Crime Unit she was diagnosed with Pulmonary Fibrosis — a lung disease she was told could not be cured and would get progressively worse until she died from it. Cathleen didn’t let this news stop her however. She continued to go to work and was fitted with an oxygen change on her back that she had to change out 3-4 times a day. She soon learned that having a double lung transplant would be the only way to continue living. The incredible resiliency and passion Cathleen displays through her story is powerful. Her ability to come back in such a strong and dynamic way after facing such challenges and contribute in such a meaningful way to the community is second to none. Tune in to hear about Cathleen’s journey as she speaks about how she faced this incredibly challenging and life-changing health concern, how she balanced work, what helped most in her recovery — from her colleague’s support to physical therapy, and where she is today with everything. Challenge We learned 5 ways to step back in but today, I’m giving you the Name that Child Challenge. I challenge you to call the names of as many children as possible in a positive way today as many times as possible. If you do this challenge with a friend, then share at the end of the day the kind of response you received from the children. Dr. Jody Carrington - Bio from Her Website I grew up on a farm in rural Alberta. My parents were high school sweethearts. My brother and I grew up together in a pretty happy place. Then my parents divorced. As adults, my brother and I learned that we had a full biological sister – who my parents had given up for adoption before we were born. I learned that even when you have a “secure base” and “safe haven”, sometimes you need a little help sorting out “your story”. For me, sorting out my own early story helps me be a better writer of the next chapters of my story – the one’s called “wife”, “mother”, “sister”, “friend”, and “psychologist”. My “story” of becoming a psychologist started at Red Deer College. I transferred to the University of Alberta, where I earned my Bachelor of Arts with distinction in 1998. I completed a year-long internship during that degree with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and became very passionate about police work and the significant toll that trauma can take on people. I was also lucky enough to spend some time working with some amazing families through Ronald McDonald House and I also volunteered with Victim Services. I then continued my studies at the University of Regina with the thought of pursuing a career in Police Psychology. Although I loved that work, my passion began to shift to families, especially those who experienced trauma. I completed my pre-doctoral residency in Nova Scotia in 2006 where I trained primarily in Cognitive-Behavioural and Narrative approaches. I completed rotations both with adults and children and learned that I really enjoyed understanding the “stories” of children—particularly those who had difficult experiences. I returned home to Alberta and accepted a job at the Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary on the Inpatient and Day Treatment Units, a position that would forever change the course of my career. I quickly learned my “cognitive-behavioral skills” were not enough for kids and families with long and often traumatic stories with multi-generational influences. I needed to connect in order to have any significant impact. Desperate to learn more about attachment, I set off on a quest for mentors who “got it” and have been very lucky to have been influenced by some of “the greats”. You will see a lot in my story about attachment. I have learned the power of the relationship. Empathy. Connection. I have learned that these are important for anyone who might want to understand their story and shift it in some way. Or heal in some way. Or repair it in some way. Or change their story once and for all. So that their next chapter as “teenager”, “spouse”, “parent”, or “friend” can be better. I have worked with adults and children, as well as families, and I would be honored to learn about your story and perhaps influence your next chapters. In this episode, I speak with Dr. Karla Tait -- clinical psychologist, Director of Programming for the Unist'ot'en Healing Center, and member of the Wet’suwet’en First Nation (in so-called British Columbia, Canada). In this interview, I ask Dr. Tait to bring us up to speed on the details surrounding the recent invasion of Wet'suwet'en Territory by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) on January 7th, the legal dimension of this ongoing confrontation between the Wet'suwet'en people and the proposed Coastal GasLink pipeline project being pushed through by the Canadian government, and what this unfolding situation means for the sovereignty of the Wet'suwet'en First Nation and the ongoing work of the Unist'ot'en Healing Center within that territory. After briefly discussing the details of these events, we move on to discuss Dr. Tait's work with the Unist'ot'en Healing Center at the Unist'ot'en Camp -- an ongoing project to revitalize the cultural/spiritual traditions of the Wet'suwet'en people as a means of healing from generations of trauma, as a result of the colonization of indigenous lands, peoples, and cultures, particularly within Wet'suwet'en territory. I ask her how the Wet’suwet’en people, in particular at the Unist’ot’en Camp and Healing Center, are generating and maintaining space for this kind of healing, and how the threat of direct confrontation with the Canadian State and its corporate allies (the fossil fuel industry) threatens the sacred work of this Camp and the Healing Center. What does the Unist’ot’en Camp and the Healing Center provide — not just for the Wet’suwet’en people — but for all people waking up to the reality of widespread ecological collapse and the ongoing violence of colonialism around the world? We discuss this and more in this episode. Dr. Karla Tait is a clinical psychologist, and is presently employed as the Mental Wellness Advisor for the Northern Region with the First Nations Health Authority, serving the 54 First Nations in Northern BC. Dr. Tait is the Director of Programming for the Unist'ot'en Healing Centre, a collective effort by her Hereditary House Group to revitalize culturally-based, wellness and holistic healing practices that are centered on connection to the land. Dr. Tait belongs to the Gilseyhu clan (Big Frog) clan of Yahstowilcus (the Dark House). Her Dini Zi' (House Chief) is Unistot’en, Knedebeas, Warner William, maternal grandmother is Weli’, Catherine Michell, maternal grandfather was Tsayu, Wigitemstochol (Dan Michell), mother is Brenda Michell-Joseph, father is Rene Tait and stepfather is Melvin Joseph. In this segment of my discussion writer, lawyer, and environmental activist Will Falk, we place Will's activism and insights within the broader context of what is currently unfolding at the Unist'ot'en Camp, part of the Wet’suwet’en territory in so-called British Columbia. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), on January 7th, breached the borders of Wet’suwet’en territory, violating Canadian and International law, as well as the sovereignty of the unceded territory of the Wet’suwet’en Nation. The proposed construction of a massive $4.7 billion Coastal GasLink pipeline through Wet’suwet’en territory has been in the works for almost a decade, and finally, after years of harassment by numerous parties, including the Canadian government, the RCMP broke through the barracaded Gitdumt'en Checkpoint of the Wet’suwet’en territory. We discuss how (speaking as settlers in North America) we can begin to understand what this struggle for indigenous autonomy means, especially within the broader struggle to upend white supremacy and colonial expansion in the modern era. In being able to preserve, maintain, and defend space for human and non-human life against the tide of colonial expansion, the continued autonomy of the Unist’ot’en Camp and the Wet’suwet’en Nation is key in our collective attempt to reclaim, heal, and live on the lands that have been violated in the name of human progress, civilization, and maintenance of the status quo. It must be stated that Will is not a member of the Wet’suwet’en Nation, nor a spokesperson for the Unist’ot’en Camp. He speaks as someone who has spent a significant amount of time at the Camp and has developed a deep respect and love for the Wet’suwet’en people, the Unist'ot'en Camp, and the beautiful space they hold in their struggle against the state of Canada and the fossil fuel industry. Will graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison Law School and practiced as a public defender in Kenosha, WI. He left the public defender office to pursue frontline environmental activism. In this episode, I speak with writer, lawyer, and environmental activist Will Falk. In 2014 and 2015, Will spent a great deal of time at the Unist’ot’en Camp, part of the Wet’suwet’en Nation (in so-called British Columbia). We place Will's activism and insights about his time at the Camp within the broader context of what is currently unfolding there. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), on January 7th, breached the borders of Wet’suwet’en territory, violating Canadian and International law, as well as the sovereignty of the unceded territory of the Wet’suwet’en Nation. In this discussion, we get into the specific reasons behind the breach of the Wet’suwet’en Nation's borders by the RCMP on January 7th, leading to the arrest of 14 defenders of the territory. The proposed construction of a massive $4.7 billion Coastal GasLink pipeline through Wet’suwet’en territory has been in the works for almost a decade, and finally, after years of harassment by numerous parties, including the Canadian government, the RCMP broke through the barracaded border of the Wet’suwet’en territory.* How can we (speaking as settlers in North America) begin to understand what this struggle for indigenous autonomy means, especially within the broader struggle to upend white supremacy and colonial expansion in the modern era? In being able to preserve, maintain, and defend space for human and non-human life against the tide of colonial expansion, the continued autonomy of the Unist’ot’en Camp and the Wet’suwet’en Nation is key in our collective attempt to reclaim, heal, and live on the lands that have been violated in the name of human progress, civilization, and maintenance of the status quo. Hello everyone and welcome back to the podcast. In this episode Patrick talks to Paul Derry. Paul was a career criminal from a very early age and became a police informant for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). He was officially coded in 1988 and worked as a source until the year 2000 when he reluctantly entered the Witness Protection Program. Despite a reported contract on Paul's life by the Hells Angels, he decided to share his experiences in his book "Inside a Police Informants Mind." An interesting and eye-opening interview. Good morning! I hope you are ready for a few stories from America’s hat. This week on Within the Trenches, Bobbi of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) joined us for episode 9 over Skype. Her stories and training were not only interesting but if I had started out my dispatching career in her center I might have gone insane. I mean, think about it, “911 where is your emergency?” “I have a bear in my yard!” Or “An avalanche just slammed down in the area!” Yeah…that would have been pretty crazy but I’m sure it would have been fun and an experience to take a call like that. The episode was fully balanced with humor, seriousness, and all around AWESOME! As always you can email us at thejcast@thejabberlog.com and we are currently seeking sponsors for the show. We are also seeking more people to participate and we do have an open call event on Facebook so make sure to check that out. We are looking for people that bleed dispatch and want to share their experience and story with not only us but also all of our listeners. Sell it to us and let us know why you would be a good choice for the show. Whitney and I firmly believe that everyone has a great story to tell and everyone is important but we are looking for those who really want to be on the show. So this is what you need to do if you want to apply to be on the show. Join/attend our open call Become a fan of Jabber Log on Facebook and send us a message through there with your experience, any memorable stories and why you should be on the show. Oh! And please leave a good email address/contact info in case we are unable to reach you through Facebook. In the end, it’s all about you, the unsung hero’s of emergency services. It’s your story and we want to help tell it. Make sure to listen, share and if you would like to learn more about the RCMP and a new Facebook page that highlights the 9-1-1 dispatchers of Canada, please follow the links below.
