In North America - and particularly the Northwest - you can hear tales of seven-foot-tall hairy men stalking the woods, occasionally scaring campers, lumberjacks, hikers and the like all over the world! Bigfoot is known by many titles with many different cultures although the name Bigfoot is generally attributed to the mountainous Western region of North America. The common name Sasquatch comes from the Salish Sasquits, while the Algonquin of the north-central region. North American settlers started reporting sightings during the late 1800s and into the 1900s with the occasional finding of footprints, sporadic encounters and even a few grainy photos and videos adding to the mystery. It took a little creativity to find the Ojibway words for a sci-fi glossary fit for Star Wars, but concepts like "The Force" and "The Resistance" are familiar concepts to Indigenous people. It made Star Wars: A New Hope a rewarding challenge to dub into Anishinaabemowin. Rosanna speaks with the actors who brought the words to life, and the translators who are passing language to the next generation. Plus, we step into the triology and hear how Padme Amidala looks with a little Choctaw flare.

This weekend takes us ABOVE the mitten, as we travel across the Mighty Mac and head to one of our favorite places in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Sault Ste Marie."Where Michigan history was born" is an apt tagline for this city that resides along the St. Mary's River, as it was founded way back in 1668 by one of Michigan's favorite explorers, Fr. Jacques Marquette. Today, the "Soo" is best known for their famous locks, which transport some of the biggest freighters in all the land between Lake Superior and Lake Huron.Our good friend Linda Hoath from the Sault Ste Marie Visitor's Bureau kicks off the show, and as one of our regular guests, you know we'll have a great time. Linda shares a little about what makes this community so special, she is a life-long resident, and a true advocate for all that this area has to offer. Linda also gives us an update on the incredibly large construction project that is underway, as they transform two of the older, smaller locks into one gigantic one that can handle larger boats. It's quite an engineering marvel.To get a great view of this project, we recommend a trip to the top, 210 feet up in the air, at the Tower of History. We stopped by for the very first time and while we were very impressed by that panoramic view, we were even more impressed with the curator, Paul Sabourin. Sometimes you get very lucky and walk into an interview and strike absolute gold, which is exactly what happened when we met Paul. A passionate storyteller, this man regaled us with stories in three languages: English, French and Ojibway. Now that I'm thinking about it, he might have also told a joke in German at one point. Head to the Tower to learn more about the Native Americans in this area and the settlers that came later, meet Mr. Paul himself and check out that absolutely incredible view.In order to see the locks in action,  you just have to do a boat tour, and our friends at the Original Soo Locks Boat Tours are some of the best. Celebrating 90 years of being on the water, the Original Tours are open every day of the summer. Shiela Marchand joins us, she is currently the business manager for the company, but she started off at the ticket counter when she was in college. Best part of her job is giving tours, she loves that they do live narration on each and every tour, so you can ask all the important questions you have about the locks. With its ever-changing course, its flowing waters and historical significance, the Mississippi River serves as a powerful metaphor for the American story. The river is a lifeblood nourishing the land while also serving as a path to freedom itself, symbolizing the pursuit of freedom and progress from the North to the Gulf of Mexico. Additional to all of this are its routes of trade and commerce that highlight both the American spirit and prosperity. This week's Deeper Roots show celebrates the river that got its name after the northern Minnesota people, the Ojibway, and their name for ‘big river' as well as songs of the namesake state and delta as well. Melanie Mark, also known by her Nisga'a name Hli Haykwhl Ẃii Xsgaak, is a difference-maker who believes strongly that the changes we need to inspire and support future generations, require all of us to get on board and paddle together. Elected in 2016, Melanie Mark, is the first First Nations woman Member of the Legislative Assembly in British Columbia's history, representing the riding of Vancouver-Mount Pleasant. During the 41st Parliament, she was appointed as the Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Training. Today, Melanie remains the only First Nations woman to have served in cabinet and served as Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport. Melanie is Nisga'a, Gitxsan, Cree and Ojibway. She was born and raised in East Vancouver and has deep roots in Northern B.C. and Manitoba. Melanie is unapologetically passionate about social, environmental and economic justice; and she entered politics to disrupt the status quo. Within two months as Minister, she paved a new path by creating the first provincial tuition waiver program for youth from the foster-care system and removed all fees for adults accessing Adult Basic Education. She is most proud of her work as Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Training to address the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action, namely supporting Indigenous teachers and language fluency, and in 2018 launching the world's first Indigenous Law program at the University of Victoria. Melanie firmly believes that education is the great equalizer and often says, "a rising tide, lifts all canoes." Melanie's work is inspired by her daughters Maya and Makayla and the desire for them to have greater access to education and opportunities as they grow up. Family is very important to Melanie, and her time with Maya, Makayla, and her extended family keeps her grounded and motivated. Melanie graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Simon Fraser University. She holds a Criminology Diploma from Douglas College/Native Education College and an Advanced Executive Certificate from Queen's School of Business.

On this week's episode of The 1 Girl Revolution Podcast, we welcome the phenomenal Shelly Denny, co-founder of Medicine Wheel Ride - a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to raising awareness and support for Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women (MMIW) and their families. Shelly lives in Arizona and is an enrolled member of the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe, which is an Anishinaabe Tribe in Northern Minnesota, also known as Ojibway or Chippewa. She is a Doctor of Oriental Medicine and works full time in Indian Country as an acupuncturist. Shelly grew up in a biker family and has been on a motorcycle since she was in the womb. In 1996, at 19 years old,  she bought her first motorcycle and hasn't let go of the throttle since. Shelly has logged over a quarter million miles on a motorcycle with numerous cross-country trips, many of which were solo rides. Shelly's activism started in her teen years and she became an organizer and volunteer in groups like Earth First, Food Not Bombs, Catholic Worker Community, and Indigenous rights groups in various peace and justice issues. After seeing the egotism and anger that can get in the way of good activist work, Shelly took a break from direct action to work on internal healing of trauma and addiction and develop healthy and productive modes of coping with obstacles and difficulties. This groundwork of healing and recovery has added a deeper level of resilience and commitment to service. Shelly believes there is great power in knowing exactly who you are and spiritual commitment that extends beyond mere faith. Chuck Copenace is a Winnipeg-based Ojibway musician and we talk about Chuck's excellent album Oshki Manitou, which expands his work as a trumpet player, arranger, and composer. He's woven together ceremonial sweat-lodge melodies with jazz, funk, dance and electronica and this episode features tracks from that album. He's such a powerfully lyrical trumpet player, and you'll be deeply touched to hear his inspiring story of moving through trauma and addiction to helping others through counseling and music. Chuck talked to me about his experience of growing up Indigenous, how intergenerational trauma from the residential schools affected his life, and how he was able to get sober and find healing in Indigineous ceremonial traditions.  You'll hear about his university experience at Brandon university studying with Alan Ehnes, how he became a counselor through the Addictions Foundation of Manitoba, and found his way back to a life in music. He has been a artist, cartoonist, writer, traditional helper, medicine harvester and cultural resource person in and around his community for many years.  Perry's spirit name is “Aandzooked”, which means “Teller of sacred stories” in Ojibway. During the “Sixties Scoop” thousands of Indigenous children were taken from their families. These children were forced into the child welfare system and often placed in non-Indigenous homes. The exact number of children taken, of families torn apart, varies – it's estimated that over 20,000 First Nations, Métis and Inuit children were removed during the Scoop. But many still don't know this story. Enter: Little Bird. Little Bird is the first television series to explore the Sixties Scoop. It is available on CRAVE, APTN Lumi and will soon air on PBS. This six-part award-winning series follows Esther, raised in a Jewish family but born Bezhig to an Ojibway family, as she searches for her birth family and discovers the truths of her past. The Little Bird family shows us what life was like for many Indigenous people living on the prairies, until a government policy left a path of destruction that devastated families, communities and cultures – the wake of which continues to be felt today. Four of the Indigenous women behind the series take us behind the scenes. Producer/Creator Jennifer Podemski is Saulteaux/Ojibway and Jewish and says it is not “any one person's story” but is reflective of many Sixties Scoop stories. Directors/Writers, Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers (Blackfoot and Sámi) and Zoe Leigh Hopkins (Heiltsuk and Mohawk) were more like Aunties, taking great care on the set of the series to make sure everyone felt safe to tell this story. Darla Contois is the star of Little Bird in the role of Esther/Bezhig. The Cree-Saulteaux actor from Misipawistik Cree Nation says she brought her own family's experience with the Scoop to inform her role.
