Programming Note: This conversation was recorded on Monday, 9/8, before the horrific and tragic killing of political activist Charlie Kirk. Gun violence is among the leading causes of death for children and teens in the United States. News of yet another mass shooting breaks almost weekly. And still, gun reform remains fiercely partisan. It is indeed a cultural flashpoint in a country that feels as divided and polarized as ever. This week, Preet is joined by John Feinblatt, the President of Everytown for Gun Safety, and Adam Winkler, a constitutional scholar and expert on the Second Amendment to discuss whether gun culture is changing for the better, whether legal reforms are making any progress, and whether the private sector can step up in the face of political deadlock. Then, Preet answers your questions about Ghislaine Maxwell's transfer to a minimum-security prison, and asks for your thoughts on Newsom's posting. In the bonus for Insiders, Preet, John, and Adam discuss U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro's decision not to federally prosecute individuals for carrying rifles or shotguns in D.C. After Las Vegan Shane Tamura was named as the shooter in last month's high-profile Manhattan shooting, NY governor Kathy Hochul blamed Nevada's lax gun laws. Turns out, it's a little more complicated than that: Nevada actually passed a pivotal "red flag" law in 2020 that allows law enforcement to temporarily take firearms away from people who pose a threat to themselves or others — but it's barely been used. In 2024, Nevada courts granted just 27 high-risk protection orders, while other states with red flag laws see thousands of such orders a year. Today, co-host Dayvid Figler talks with Assemblymember Sandra Jauregui, one of the architects behind many of Nevada's gun safety legislation and a survivor of the Route 91 mass shooting. They talk about how red flag laws work, if they're working, and what we can do better. To learn more about how red flag laws in Nevada work, check out this guide from Everytown. Twelve years ago, Shannon Watts was folding laundry when breaking news stopped her in her tracks: a mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary. The next morning, she woke up with a fire inside her, and turned her grief and rage into action. That action became Moms Demand Action, now part of Everytown for Gun Safety, the largest gun violence prevention organization in the country. In today's episode, Shannon joins Jessi Hempel to reflect on the grassroots journey that began in her kitchen and grew into a national movement. Shannon's new book, Fired Up, is a call to action for women everywhere who are ready to turn their spark into action, but aren't sure where to start. Jessi and Shannon discuss: Shannon's journey from corporate PR to grassroots activism The power of starting before you feel ready Why burnout can be a turning point How women, especially mothers, are the hidden engine of societal change Lessons from more than a decade of advocacy and organizing Join the conversation at Hello Monday Office Hours. Catch us Wednesday at 3 PM ET on the LinkedIn News Page. See you there.
Shannon Watts is the founder of Moms Demand Action, a prominent grassroots organization fighting gun violence in the United States. She initially aspired to be an investigative journalist, and she earned a journalism degree but transitioned into a career in public relations, spending nearly two decades in corporate communications at companies like Anthem and GE Healthcare. After taking a step back from her career to become a stay-at-home mom, the Sandy Hook tragedy in 2012 spurred her into action, and she founded Moms Demand Action with a simple Facebook group. Leveraging her communications and branding expertise, she transformed the group into a powerful nationwide movement, now part of Everytown for Gun Safety, the largest gun violence prevention organization in the country, with nearly 11 million supporters. She has since been recognized as one of Time's 100 Most Influential People and a Forbes 50 Over 50 Changemaker. Send us a textThe communist-controlled Connecticut State legislature is attempting to pass yet another civilian disarmament law that they suppose will allow them to circumvent the PLCAA (Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act). Meanwhile, 19 of their fellow communists in Georgia were arrested in April for child sex trafficking, one of them being a former candidate for Georgia's 139th House District, who was lauded by the civilian disarmament cartels (Everytown, Commie Mommies, Giffords, etc.) as a "gun sense candidate", who also made online threats and calls for assassination against President Trump, while citing the 2nd Amendment as being the justification for his actions. The irony being that he was calling for the Secret Service to shoot Trump. But these are the people that want us to give up our guns to them? The gun control group Everytown for Gun Safety is promoting its new "EveryShot" database, which purports to keep track of every reported incident of "gun violence" in the country, but as Cam details, there are some inherent flaws in the anti-gunners' approach.
Send us a textIn this episode, a stark comparison is shown between the lies of the civilian disarmament cartels and the actual facts about keepers and bearers. While the "Everytown" communists are creating articles decrying concealed carriers as being the catalyst for "gun violence", a recent report by John R. Lott, founded on actual research, blows their moronic assertions out of the water, because it shows that concealed carriers stop more active shooters than police officers do.Support the showGiveSendGo | Unconstitutional 2A Prosecution of Tate Adamiak Askari Media GroupBuy Paul Eberle's book "Look at the Dirt"Paul Eberle (lookatthedirt.com)The Deadly Path: How Operation Fast & Furious and Bad Lawyers Armed Mexican Cartels: Forcelli, Peter J., MacGregor, Keelin, Murphy, Stephen: 9798888456491: Amazon.com: BooksVoice of the Blue (buzzsprout.com)
