Gone, But Never Forgotten is a podcast that tells mostly Canadian true crime stories. Disappearances, solved and unsolved murders and more. A proud member of the Darkcast Network.
Often times as we are growing up people tell us things like “it could always be worse” or they tell us that we are exaggerating our situations, but the reality is that sometimes there are stories going on like the one that we are going to talk about today. In the past we have talked about people in positions of power of people who have jobs that we entrust our children to, but this week we are going to talk about one of the worsts of the worst as far as crimes go in my mind. We are going to talk about a woman who was convicted of torturing and killing two of her six children while also using and abusing her other children to help and hide her crimes. True Crime gives us many examples of the anti-hero. The character that we find ourselves possibly rooting for, even though they do not possess or show the traits that are common in a hero. The anti-hero is not idealistic and certainly often works outside the boundaries of morality. Many of us think of people like Gary Plauché who killed his son's kidnapper and molester in 1984. This week we are going to cover another person who was in that same vein. This man, in 2016 would track down a number of sex offenders by getting their information from the nation's public registry on the matter. He would attack at least three men who had previously been convicted of sexual crimes and after being dubbed The Alaskan Avenger, he would eventually wind up behind bars. On April 4th of 1991 a young, 20-year-old woman was stopping at a payphone to call her fiancee to let him know that she was too tired to meet up for their plans and that she was instead going to head home for the night to rest and sleep. While she was still on the phone with her boyfriend she would be grabbed and kidnapped. This case had some interesting turns along the way and is still technically unsolved even though in 2021 a new theory came about. If you have ever taken a psychology class or really, if you are a fan of true crime, at some point in your life you have probably come across The Bystander Effect. The Bystander Effect is a social psychological theory that states that individuals are less likely to offer help to a victim of a crime when there are other people present. They believe instead that someone else must have called authorities or someone else will help. This theory is actually largely based on the murder of Kitty Genovese and we are going to change a lot of what you may know or may have been taught about that case here today. Lost in all of the controversy that has surrounded that over the years, is a story of a woman that was brutally murdered, regardless of the circumstances that surrounded that murder. Stories that are unsolved are terrible, there is no denying it. As we have said many times in the past on our show, we wonder how people can possibly live with themselves when they take a life. On October 10th, 2008 that is precisely what happened. A young man, 18 years of age, was walking home on a country road when he was struck by a vehicle and left for dead on the side of the road. It took 14 years for arrests to be made in this case, but currently it looks like there may be light at the end of a long tunnel for the family, at least in terms of answers. This week we cover what happened in 2008, what happened in between and what is currently happening now within the case. On February 19th, 2013 a body would be found inside a large cistern on the roof of the Stay on Main hotel in downtown Los Angeles in the United States of America. Now, over 9 years later, many would say that there are plenty of mysteries and unanswered questions surrounding the case. This death has been called back to in pop culture many times over the years and in fact bore a lot of similarities to the horror movie Dark Water which actually came out many years before the death, in 2005. This week we will talk about the girl at the center of the story, the hotel itself, the video that was later released to the public, The Elevator Game and some of the theories that have popped up over the years. Murder in a small town is something that is supposed to be rare. However, when it does happen generally the cases do not remain open for too long because in a setting like that, most everyone knows one another and there are clues, eye witnesses and mistakes. This week we are going to look at a case though that took place in Orangeville, Ontario in 2010. At that time, the population was roughly 27 thousand people. Now, 12 years later, sadly, this case remains open. To this day, very little information is known as to what happened, including the details surrounding how a young nurse died. Today, we will look at what details there are on the case in the hopes of helping to find some answers. Over a three day period from June 22nd to June 24th of 2007 a tragedy occurred that was on a magnitude that we don't see very often. Not because of what happened perhaps, because sadly those circumstances do exist on a near daily, if not daily basis, in the world around us. However, the part of the story that makes this stand out from the others was WHO was committing the acts in question. It is not so often that we see someone who is a public figure, someone who lives in the public eye every day commit acts like the ones that we are going to talk about today. Over those three days, the man in question would murder his son, his wife and then take his own life. The story runs deep and to set the scene we are going to go WAY back because of the theories and the things that are believed to have played apart here. We are going to discuss the life and final days of a man who is known by fans of professional wrestling and true crime all over the world. So many of our episodes cover the loss of people or the loss of life and either offer up a sad ending or a story that has yet to be finished. This week we are going travelling south of the border to The United States and we are going to cover a case that starts out so similar to many of the cases that we have covered and yet, one that has a happy ending. At the age of 14 a young girl was kidnapped right out of her own home and from a room that she shared with her sister. The family fought hard, never gave up hope and never gave up on trying to find their beloved daughter. About nine months after she was abducted all of the hard work and effort paid off and the young girl was discovered about 29 kilometres from her home. Now, she is an advocate for missing persons and victims of sexual assault. I think that most people can have empathy with someone that says “woe is me” on some level. I think that most people can understand growing up and feeling as though life was unfair or that life was depressing. Those are generally pretty common feelings, especially when we are children growing up and we see other people who perhaps have things that we don't have or a life that we don't have. On January 18th, 2003 though two sisters would take those feelings to an entirely different and sadistic level when they would complete a plot that led to what is believed to have been the first ever matricide in Canada by two sisters. The names in this case are fictional because names are protected under The Youth Criminal Justice Act, but the story is very real. The worst part of the murder that we are about to discuss is that everything was premeditated and the two sisters almost got away with it. David Michael Kreuger is best known by his birth name, Peter Woodcock and he is known as Canada's youngest serial killer. By the time that his life ended in 2010 he was known as a serial killer, a child rapist and was also diagnosed as a psychopath. Peter is known for crimes that actually took place many, many years apart as he would initially be incarcerated for three murders of young children in Toronto in the late 1950s. However, one of the most jarring things about Peter was that he also would commit murder in 1991 on his very first day of unsupervised release from the institution that he had been held in. Kingston Penitentiary was a maximum security prison in Canada that was located in Kingston, Ontario and is located between King Street West and Lake Ontario. Kingston Pen as it's referred to was built between 1833 and 1834 and officially opened on June 1st, 1835 as the Provincial Penitentiary of the Province of Upper Canada. At the time that Kingston Pen closed down it was one of the oldest prisons in continuous use in the world. Kingston Pen was eventually replaced by Millhaven Institution. Before it was closed down as a full maximum security prison, in 1971 it would be the site of a riot that lasted for four days and that riot would result in the deaths of two inmates and the destruction of most of the prison itself. There were hostages taken, there were inmates beaten to death and nearly to death and there was a whole hell of a lot to the story. On Halloween morning of 1980, a 39 year old man who was residing for a brief period of time in Bristol, England was found lying dead in a pool of his own blood on Brandon Hill. He had only been in Bristol for two months at the time of his death. As the investigation into the murder started it was discovered that the murder was bloody, brutal and incredibly savage. The man had been known to be quite the drinker, but he was not known to be the type to get involved in drama or fights while he was out at the bar. So, what happened in this case? Halloween is a holiday that is based around people getting to dress up and become something or someone else. Sometimes that means dressing up as a character from your favourite movie, show or video game. Sometimes that means taking on and dressing up as an entirely new persona and becoming someone or something that you perhaps wish was closer to the true you. On October 31st, 2020 in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada though a man dressed up in a kimono and took to the streets in a much more sinister way. He would kill two innocent bystanders at random and he would injure five others and would later say that it wasn't him at all that committed those murders. No, in fact he would blame “bad Carl” for committing the indecencies that were committed on that night. On October 31st, 2011 in Armstrong, British Columbia, a young lady was preparing to enjoy Halloween one more time with her friends as she realized that they were all getting older and they were all going to be headed in life's many directions in the very near future. Halloween was her favourite day of the year. Taylor Van Diest would dress up as a zombie and then leave home at 5:50pm. On June 9th, 1959 a 12-year-old-girl would disappear in Clinton, Ontario, about 80 kilometres northwest of London, Ontario from nearby the Royal Canadian Air Force Base. Seemingly the last person to see her alive would be a young man who was also a classmate of hers at The Air Vice Marshal Hugh Campbell School. The two had gone for a ride oh his bicycle. When the young girl did not return home, the young boy would in fact become a suspect in her disappearance. On June 11th, two days after she had gone missing, tragically her body would be found and on June 12th, the young man would be arrested and charged with first-degree murder. If you asked someone what they know about serial killers they will most likely mention Jack The Ripper or Jeffrey Dahmer or Ted Bundy and then perhaps branch out from there. In Canada, when you talk to people about serial killers, we have Clifford Olson, Robert Pickton and Paul Bernardo that immediately spring to mind for most. However, one thing that stands out when most people talk about serial killers is that a lot of the most prolific ones are males. You don't often hear too much about female serial killers. Some will say that that is because the stories are not usually all that “interesting” so to speak. One of Canada's most prolific serial killers is a name that most people know, but their memories only really trigger when the name is mentioned. Elizabeth Wettlaufer was found guilty of murdering eight people and attempting to murder six others. I was a clear, brisk spring day in Woodstock, Ontario. A Wednesday, a day like many others that had come and were expected to still be in the future. An eight year old girl was on her way home from school to her brand new house where she lived with her mom, Tara and her brother Daryn. She had just started the painstaking process of getting her room together just how she wanted it the night before. She had decorated the room with posters and toys that showed off her true loves in life, Disney princesses, bratz dolls and high school musical. That evening she was going to spend the evening with her dad, Rodney, and then watch a movie with some of her friends. In 1992 one of the worst mass murders in Canadian history took place in Yellowknife, the capital of Northwest Territories, in Canada. In the midst of what was already a violent clash between management and workers, a lockout and strike, nine men who were working as replacement workers died when their rail car hit a bomb. The end result was that a man would confess and then take back his confession. The bomb was deliberately planted and nine men lost their lives as a direct result of that. In many of our cases, we look at missing person cases that involve a person being kidnapped or disappearing. In this episode we are going to look at a case that is really one of a kind, at least in Canada. This case is going to cover the disappearance of not one, but four people simultaneously in August of 1989 in British Columbia. This case intertwines many of the topics and themes that we have covered in the past on the show. This case includes the disappearance of four indigenous people, it is also a story of people going missing, seemingly without a trace and this case shows once again how vulnerable people have been preyed upon in the past. Thompson, Manitoba has been at the top of or very nearly the top of the Statistics Canada Crime Severity Index for many many years. The CSI does not only look at the number of crimes or crimes per capita, the CSI assigns numbers to crimes with a higher number placed on crimes that are punishable with longer prison sentences. That is the way that we measure the severity of crime occurring in an area. Often times when you hear about high crime rates or crime severity, you think about things like gangs, gang warfare and things of that nature. On Saturday, November 26th, 2005 though, the case that we are looking at today occurred and is still unsolved. The young lady that we are going to speak about today was quite literally a salt of the earth person. In the early hours of August 8th, 1982 a pizza would be shared between a couple and a young lady at 2269 rue Dorion in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The young lady was living with the couple and helping them by babysitting their child at times. She was known as a rather reserved 19-year-old girl and sharing in that pizza would be the last time that she would be seen by anyone. Was this a case of a targeted kidnapping? On Sunday, September 27th of 2015 in Vaughan, Ontario a tragedy that would be completely avoidable and murderous, no matter how you look at it, occurred. A family was out for a drive, enjoying a beautiful day in the early fall in Southern Ontario. An entire family was torn apart in a moment because of the idiotic decision of one man. One man decided that he was ok to drive, even though he was not and he destroyed a family because of that decision and the reverberations of that decision. On July 18th, 2018 a University of Iowa student would disappear, seemingly without a trace while she was home for the summer in her hometown of Brooklyn, Iowa. For a month, police and everyone else were at a complete and utter loss as to what had happened to this young lady and there seemed to be no leads, no evidence and no trace of where, how and who else was involved in the disappearance. She sent a message to her boyfriend, went for a job and never returned home. This case is one that was solved because of technology, in the form of CCTV cameras. Today we will talk about what happened, who was behind it and the fallout when the truth was uncovered. Imagine having a night out on the town that included having a blast at a local nightclub and visiting two house parties. That sounds like a great night to many people. Unfortunately for one young 21-year-old indigenous woman that kind of night would wind up being the last known night in her young life. She would leaver her parents home around 11pm in Nanaimo BC and she would sadly never be seen by them again. Even though she has not been seen or heard from since that harrowing night and even though police have never found a body, her disappearance is being treated as and investigated as, murder.Sources:Lisa Marie Young Facebook Group"Lisa's Song" by Allison Crowe on SpotifyLisa Marie Young - International Missing PersonMore Witnesses Have Come Forward Large Reward Offered Disappearance of Lisa Marie Young$50000 Reward New information in Lisa Marie Young's disappearance after several people come forward Intro Music Provided by GallagherGallagher on SpotifyGallagher on Apple Music Yesterday, Tomorrow and All The Days Between
On November 8th, 2010, a young woman would return to her family home in Markham, Ontario and later that evening the entire family would come under siege as armed gunman would enter the home. The family had no idea how these attackers had managed to gain access to the home and in the attack the family matriarch would be murdered and the patriarch would be injured. It would slowly come to light that things were not quite as they seemed. Between 201 0 and 2017 at least eight men would go missing in and around Toronto's Gay Village that would end up being a part of this case. Those eight disappearances, and their connection, for whatever reason, would fly under the radar of police who seemed to view most of these as just missing men who probably had reasons to go missing. Even though the community at large was certain that there was a serial killer in their midst, taking victims and making them disappear, police would whole-heartedly disagree. Even though the majority of the men that would eventually be tied to Bruce McArthur had many things in common, including age, ethnicity, background, and marginalized status, police either failed to accept that this was the work of one suspect, or multiple suspects working together, until it was far too late. This week we look at how everything FINALLY came together to investigate, capture and put that serial killer behind bars. A total of eight men went missing from the Church and Wellesley area of Toronto. This area is known because it really does fall in the heart of the LGBT-oriented enclave within Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The investigation into the disappearances has come under intense scrutiny over the years and would eventually lead to the arrest, charge and guilty plea of a 66 year old, self employed man from Toronto. The man is the most prolific KNOWN serial killer within Toronto and he is also the oldest known serial killer in Canada. Bruce McArthur is a name that you likely know if you know a lot about True Crime in Canada. Bruce is known as the oldest known serial killer in Canadian history. This week, in part one, we will take a look at the early years of Bruce McArthur and the things that happened along the way to the crimes that he is more well known for. The interesting thing that you will discover is that the years that led up to Bruce becoming a serial killer are actually quite a bit different than the back-stories that you hear from others who wind up committing similar crimes. Bruce McArthur would end up being much older than most people are before something inside of him changed. On the evening of May 3rd, 2007 a three year old girl went missing from her bed during the night while her family was on vacation at a resort in Praia da Luz in Portugal. This case has been described as the most heavily reported missing person case in modern history and to this day, 15 years later her whereabouts still remain unknown. German prosecutors believe that the young girl is certainly dead but her family, people that know the family and people who don't know the family all continue to hold out hope that she is still alive. At the very least, we hope that all of the eyes and attention on this case now, so long after will ensure that regardless of the outcome, everyone involved will get a sense of closure in this case. September 3rd, 1985 was a cool fall day in Saint John, New Brunswick. It was the day after Labour Day and everyone was transitioning into back to school, back to work and back to cooler temperatures. In Saint John it was a very popular time as The Atlantic National Exhibition was taking place. The ANE is an annual fair that features art, crafts, horticulture, livestock exhibits, family entertainment and a midway. The ANE was filled with laughter, happiness and good times. Unfortunately though on this date things would take a turn for one person in particular that was at the fair and today, 37 years later it is still a night that is remembered with sadness, confusion and heartbreak. On February 2nd, 1999 at the address of 11553 Wellington Street, a rural street about 7km north of St.Thomas, Ontario emergency services were called as there was a fire in the farmhouse. When they arrived at the address they found a fire that was local to the living room of the house and they tragically found a man and a woman inside the building and they were both deceased. This however was not quite as it seemed and the police would unravel a set of circumstances that still today, over 23 years later, have not been explained, solved or closed. Most missing person cases centre around one person or perhaps at most, 2 or 3 people, but in the case that we are discussing today that is not the case. This case centres around six boys that all disappeared at the same time, in the same place. This case took place in 1995, it turned 27 years of age in March of 2022 and to date this case is still confusing, perplexing and crazy to anyone that knows about it. The boys are referred to as The Lost Boys because they seemingly disappeared into thin air and the case is no closer to being solved today than it was when it took place. Get ready to here an interesting story that doesn't have a close to it even with so many people still following it and tracking in and trying to solve it. There has been next to nothing in the way of evidence and all that is left is that wonderment and for those involved, the heartbreak. In the last episode we started to look at the descent into crime of Eric Clinton Kirk Newman, better known by Luka Rocco Magnotta. If you have not yet had a chance to listen to part 1, I highly suggest that you take the time to do so before diving into episode 2. In the last episode we looked a bit at Luka's past and some of the things that may have led to the heinous crime that we are going to discuss at great length today. We talked about the crimes that led to Netflix Series Don't Fuck With Cats and the manhunt that took place behind the scenes for a man who had made videos of killing cats. Many believed that this was precursor of worse things to come and unfortunately they would prove to be right. In this episode we will talk about the sad, grizzly murder of Jun Lin and the horrible ways in which his body was disrespected and desecrated after the fact. If I say the name Eric Clinton Kirk Newman to you, odds are that unless you are really and truly a lover of True Crime, that name doesn't ring a bell for you. However, when Eric Newman legally changed his name, he changed it to something that is much more known in the casual true crime world and also known by almost every person that was alive at the time that he committed his crimes, and especially his worst crime. In 2006 Eric changed his name to Luka Magnotta and on May 25th, 2012 a series of events would kick off that would give Luka Magnotta something that he had been chasing for his entire life, fame. But not the fame that any normal person looks for, no, Luka Magnotta decided to up the level of crime that he was committing, and he had already committed a lot and a lot of heinous crimes, this time he would commit murder and desecration to a body unlike almost anything ever seen before on Canadian soil. This case is a look into how horrible things on the internet can really be, if you weren't already aware. Welcome to episode 23 of Gone, But Never Forgotten, the life and crimes of Luka Magnotta. On the evening of September 3rd, 1996, in Turner Valley, Alberta, a very small town about 70 kilometres southwest of Calgary, 911 calls were made by neighbours who noticed a smouldering fire at a residence nearby. The fire department would come and put out the blaze. Upon the fire being put out, two people were found in the home and they had tragically died. However, upon investigation it was discovered that the two deceased had in fact not died from the fire and were in fact murdered before the fire was set. May 6th, 2020, with the world reeling and struggling already with the spread of Covid and the depression, darkness and pain that was already being felt with that, a family had no idea that things were about to become infinitely worse for them. That was the day that Dylan Ehlers was visiting with his maternal grandma in Truro, Nova Scotia and he would go missing in a very short moment when her back was turned. xKfNaTlxG2eiEvkkGlUa Intro Music: "Recurring Anomaly" by Charles HolmeSources:https://globalnews.ca/news/7983346/truro-police-search-dylan-ehler-june-2021/https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/cyberbullying-case-truro-missing-toddler-1.6128854https://www.newser.com/story/311011/after-their-son-disappeared-the-online-posse-pounced.htmlhttps://www.ctvnews.ca/w5/three-year-old-dylan-ehler-disappeared-in-seconds-his-family-wants-changes-to-the-missing-child-alert-system-1.5671998https://pleasebringmehome.com/cases/nova-scotia/dylan-ehler/https://www.saltwire.com/atlantic-canada/communities/march-for-dylan-ehler-amid-parents-fight-with-truro-police-100615284/https://www.wired.com/story/search-missing-boy-dylan-ehler-nova-scotia/https://atlantic.ctvnews.ca/i-think-somebody-has-him-grandmother-of-missing-boy-says-in-first-interview-since-his-disappearance-1.5417736
On January 14th, 1953 a Stanley Park employee came across a patch of leaves while he was patrolling the grounds. This patch of leaves caught his attention immediately because as he walked across them they made a different and significant crunching sound under his feet. He decided to investigate and he dug a bit down under the leaves and brush and what he found definitely caught him off guard. He discovered numerous bones embedded in the ground. This would be the discovery of one of the most famous unsolved murder cases in Canada, The Babes in the Woods. On Sunday November 17th 2019 26 year old Marshal Iwaasa spent his day doing normal, run of the mill Sunday things. He did his laundry and worked around his home he rented in Calgary, Alberta, Canada doing chores. Early in the evening he jumped into his dark blue GMC Sierra truck and made a two hour drive to Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada. Lethbridge is where Marshall had grown up and one of his first stops was to visit his mother. He spent a few hours visiting with his mom and fixing a computer issue that she had. Around 11pm he left his mom's house wearing black pants, a green hoodie, red high-top running shoes and a grey toque. Marshal has not been seen, or heard from, since.
