Jay Tholen is the mind behind Dropsy The Clown, and also a great guy who once worked for a mafia telemarketing firm. I met Jay when I was hired to be Dropsy as we stormed the video game media outlets in San Francisco, California, ending up appearing on Up At Noon, and giving out many hugs. It was great fun catching up with Jay from his new home in Germany where he continues to make bizarre and beautiful video games.  Find Jay:Twitter: http://twitter.com/jaytholenWebsite: http://jaytholen.net Here is a fun list of the weirdest video games (Dropsy is on it):https://edition.howchoo.com/s/weirdest-video-games-034b174ffe16477b Thanks to our sponsor Burly Beverages. https://www.burlybeverages.com/  They make artisanal, gourmet soda syrups and old time. These are great for cocktails and mocktails, especially for mocktails. In this BONUS, I'm joined by Jay Tholen for an in-depth look at the music and audio of Hypnospace Outlaw. An internet simulator set at the turn of the 21st century, Hypnospace Outlaw is one of my favourite games that I played in 2020. It's dripping in 90s nostalgia, and its keen sense of humour is colourful as you're invited into a faithful parody of online tropes from the time. Most importantly for The Sound Test, the experience is utterly packed with original music. From MIDI-esque sample sets to entirely new genres, like Coolpunk, Hypnospace Outlaw never ceases to amaze with the sheer level of detail in its music. This is a track I did for Jay Tholen's new video game, Hypnospace Outlaw. Within the game, the song is by an imaginary 90's alt-folk band called Barnaby's Chair. https://store.steampowered.com/app/844590/Hypnospace_Outlaw/ Lyrics: Back when we were both young and pretty Oh, you had so much to say But things weren't perfect in the city So now you've moved away And my my, look how your star has faded You spend the night at home Practicing your drums for a gig that never comes Casting dirty glances at the phone You've still got mountains in your mind You never even tried to climb You never seemed to have the time You know you used to shine so bright Was that all reflected light? Were you just a satellite? Lord knows, these things get so confusing When you have flown so far Back home the almond trees are blooming But it's autumn where you are And my my, now all the leaves are changing Just like the color of your hair Time flies, soon everything looks strange and A chill is in the air You've still got mountains in your mind You never even tried to climb You never seemed to have the time You know you used to shine so bright Was that all reflected light? Were you just a satellite? You know you used to shine so bright Was that all reflected light? Was nothing coming from inside? Were you just a satellite?

For those unfamiliar, here’s how it works: our list consists of what we believe to be the top ten games we played this year. We consider any game played in 2017, not just games released in 2017. Everyone brings their personal top ten games to the table, from which we will decide the official Best Games Played. Once the chosen ten have been decided upon, we will create a superlative for each game that best encapsulates the spirit of its experience. We’d like to thank everyone who’s been on the show this year: Ruthie Edwards; Tim Howell, Chris Howell, and John Duthie; Alex Rice; Dan Cotting; Mason Brown; Nick Nundahl and Joe Wetmore; Luke Porr; Justin Mitchell; Momin Khan; Tyler Rhodes; Kirk Musngi; Shawn Patton; Josiah Renaudin; Kenny Kim; Jay Tholen; David Byers; Mike Futter; M Joshua Cauller; and Michael Listo. And a special thanks to this year’s co-hosts Will Blanton, Sam Loeschen, and Alex Damrath! Our extended Wardcast family is what makes the show so fun to do! Merry 2017!
