Landless are Lily Power, Méabh Meir, Ruth Clinton and Sinéad Lynch, a vocal quartet coming out of the same Dublin scene as Lankum, Lisa O'Neill and ØXN. They sing centuries old ballads as well as more recently penned folk songs. Lúireach (out now on Glitterbeat) is their second album and as with their acclaimed debut Bleaching Bones (2018), it was produced by John ‘Spud' Murphy, known for his inspired work with artists such as Lankum and ØXN. Sometimes unaccompanied and at times with subtle instrumentation (including Lankum's Cormac MacDiarmada on various instruments), their vocally rich music is dark and patient; spellbinding and gorgeous. On this episode of the TPOE podcast, Méabh and Ruth talk through the 10 tracks that comprise Lúireach, what it was like working with Spud, how they create their harmonies, and lots more. Then he talks through other releases on the label, like Natalia Beylis' collaboration with Eimear Reidy, Ian Lynch's solo debut, and the two compilations from 2023: A Collection of Songs in the Traditional & Sean-Nós Style and Under the Island: Experimental Music in Ireland 1960-1994. He began playing music in 1980 while he was in college studying nursing. When he got his degree in 1983, Mohammad moved to the city of Raqqa, Syria where he began working as a professional singer and started his own band, The Al-Rabie Band which played concerts, parties, weddings and festivals all over Syria. The Al-Rabie Band were a much sought-after group. Their live sets included Kurdish, Arabic, Turkish and some Western songs as well as Mohammad's own original material. Mohammad continued to play with his band while also working as a surgical nurse until the war broke out in 2011. This unfortunately brought tragedy to Mohammad's family when one of his sons was killed by Isis thus threatening the lives of the rest of his family. His family had no choice but to leave their home and seek safety in Europe. Three of Mohammad's sons were resettled in Germany while Mohammad, his young daughter and wife were taken in by Ireland. Mohammad has spoken at length of his confusion and despair with fundamentalists and how their message is a far cry from the teachings of love and understanding that he considers the true message of Islam. Since arriving in Ireland, Mohammad has used the language of music to integrate into the local community by playing at private parties and concerts. He regularly plays at weddings and events for the Kurdish and Syrian communities all over Ireland and in Germany. He has collaborated with such Irish artists as Martin Hayes, Cormac Begley, Eimear Reidy, Cathal Roche and Vincent Woods. In 2023 he opened for Lankum at the Cork Opera House and received huge applause from the packed out room. Mohammad's own brand of ecstatic music takes elements from Middle Eastern and North African music to create an atmosphere of joy, love and happiness. The songs on ‘I am Kurdish' have been recorded and mixed with the view to make them to suitable for listening to at a small get together or to be played on a big rig at night clubs. Either way, it is a record that will make people dance. Three of the tracks on the album feature accompaniment by two fellow Leitrim-based musicians: composer, improviser, sound artist and saxophonist Cathal Roche and composer, improviser and cellist Eimear Reidy. Mohammad says: “I thank everyone who has stood with me and supported me. And I especially thank the Irish people who have engaged with my music in such a wonderful way. I consider myself lucky to have come to this wonderful country that has welcomed me and all refugees. I thank God for everything, and now, thanks to this wonderful country, I am a musician and have a safe home. Thank you to the Irish government and people for giving me the honour of calling this country my home.”

Movie of the Year2023 Best AlbumOur 2023 Best Album bracket is here to pick the best musical moments of 2023!John Album, inventor of the album, was heard to remark one day, "There should be a playlist where all the songs are by one artist, and all songs on this playlist-ish thing should be released at the same time, in a track order of the artists' choosing!" We know, of course, that John Album was driven into the wilds of the Texas panhandle for his beliefs, but no one can doubt he changed the world. It took albums a long time to catch on, but they have finally made a name for themselves and made the legend of John Album one that we still tell the kiddos late on Album Day's eve. 2023 had no shortage of these bespoke playlists, many of them from artists I could name. And so I will: boygenius came out with an album so good they had to call the CD the record. Caroline Polacheck made a name for herself with Desire, I Want to Turn Into You. And Mitski did the dang thing with her own album, False Lankum. No, wait, that one was from the band Lankum.  On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a couple of singers who've devoted themselves, in slightly different ways, to keeping traditional music alive: Shirley Collins and Radie Peat. Collins is 88, and she's had a pretty strange and incredible career. She started performing traditional songs in the mid-1950s, and she notably left England in 1959 to travel the United States with Alan Lomax, recording songs and singers in Appalachia and elsewhere that may otherwise have been lost to history. She recorded some incredibly influential records in the '60s and '70s with Davy Graham and, separately, with her sister Dolly Collins. And then Shirley left music entirely. It wasn't until the 2000s that unlikely underground musicians would coax her back to performing: British apocalyptic-folk-industrial band Current 93 were the first, strangely. It wasn't until 2014—38 years after her last album—that Collins made a new one, and it was gorgeous and well received. She's since released a couple more, all for the hip Domino label, fitting for someone who's been so quietly influential. Her latest is Archangel Hill; check out “Hares on the Mountain” right here. Radie Peat, singer for Lankum, is one of the many musicians who've been deeply influenced by Collins—and by the traditional songs that Collins helped to keep alive. But while Lankum is definitely part of the folk tradition, they modernize the sound in wildly interesting ways. Their fourth and latest album is called False Lankum, and I love this quote about it from Mojo Magazine: “If modern folk music needs its own OK Computer, its own The Dark Side of the Moon, or indeed its own F♯A♯∞, this may well be it.” (That last album referenced, in case you didn't recognize it, is the debut from Godspeed You Black Emperor.) If that all sounds intriguing, you'll probably love it. Oh, and the album was recently shortlisted for the prestigious Mercury Prize. Here's “Go Dig My Grave” from False Lankum. Peat describes this conversation as “fangirling,” though I'm not sure that's entirely fair. There's definitely some mutual admiration happening here—Collins still keeps up with music, and she loves Lankum as well. They talk about Collins' adventures in America with Alan Lomax, about other singers they admire, and how they share a pretty strong hatred for jazz. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Shirley Collins and Radie Peat for chatting. In part two of our Lankum special we dedicate some time to talking about the band's entire back catalogue before getting torn into their 2019 album The Livelong Day. Up until this record, the band had only really toyed with taking their sound in a darker, more extreme direction. Of course, both of those adjectives are relative - Lankum are not Pig Destroyer - but in the context of traditional music, or folk music, the band make a devilish, challenging noise that is certainly indebted to noise and drone in less than subtle ways. The band have since gone on to create an even more challenging record in False Lankum, their latest album. It's clear that they remain committed to treading their own path, and whilst we both admit to having not have had enough time to truly digest False Lankum, it's heartening to know their vision remains uncompromised. But really it comes down to the age old question - is The Livelong Day an Unsung classic? Listen and find out, and chip in with your thoughts on our socials!

This week we've decided to tackle a genre we've yet to tackle - folk. Or traditional. Or traditional folk? Irish folk music? Irish folk drone? Who knows what to label it, really. All we know is that it's traditional music and it's folk music. Yes, we're talking about Lankum. We've been trying to get this episode in the bag for freaking ages but after interviewing the band, we struggled to land a guest to guide us through the world of folk music. So we decided just to plough on through anyway, so please forgive our ignorance around this genres, as we're not steeped in it like we are many other genres we cover. Ostentisbly this is a two parter about the album The Livelong Day by Lankum, however this week we actually have an interview with Lankum and with Scottish folk legend Simon Thoumire. In this episode we'll mainly be tackling trad music scene in Scotland, how it may seem inaccessible to some, the class divide, the instituations that train and develop trad musicians, and comparing that somewhat to the scene in Ireland. Hope you dig it!
