A very special episode this week: friends of the show Phil Tucker and Damian Gibson - Joel's former radio-show co-hosts - join us to talk about music in games. Damian is the host of the podcasts WrestleWolf and Agents of Narrative. Phil - who made the music for the pod - was a touring musician for 10 years, and now works as a composer. In the first of two podcasts, we talk about the function of music in games, and indulge in some reminiscing.   Games mentioned: Hypnospace outlaw Mario Guardians of the Galaxy FTL Crypt of the Necrodancer Night in the Woods Yakuza The Artful Escape Red Dead Redemption 2 EVE Online

A publisher perspective: we haven't had one of those before, and it's an area of pivotal importance in games people often have misconceptions about. How does it all work, from spotting a game to signing it, to marshalling it out of the door? And whose side are publishers on?   My guest today started their own label five years ago in the hope of doing things differently - and things have gone very well. Today, No More Robots employs 13 people and is responsible for notable small-team games like Hypnospace Outlaw, Descenders, Not Tonight, and Yes, Your Grace.   The recently-announced Hypnospace Outlaws spiritual sequel Dreamsettler apparently became one of the company's most Wishlisted games. Not bad for a project Rose apparently suggested because he wanted more Hypnospace music.   But once upon a time, it was just Rose. Rose taking a punt on a Dutch downhill biking game behind closed doors at Gamescom 2017 - and apparently Descenders looked very different then. But his keen eye has helped build a great portfolio since then and even allowed the company to branch into internal game development. He did once pass on Overcooked, though, because he didn't think local co-op would take off again, so you know, it hasn't always gone to plan.
