Shawn Galvin: Musical Thinking, Orchestral Life, and the Art of Teaching

The Bandwich Tapes

Play Episode Listen Later May 28, 2026 57:30

On this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I sit down with percussionist and educator Shawn Galvin for a wide-ranging conversation about orchestral life, teaching, and the deeper thinking behind great musicianship. I first learned about Shawn through my son Skyler, who studied with him at LSU, so this conversation felt especially meaningful for me.We begin by talking about Shawn's approach to teaching and how he balances technique with musicality. His philosophy is simple but powerful: musical intent should always lead the way. Instead of practicing technique in isolation, Shawn encourages students to pursue musical ideas first—and then let the technical work follow to serve those ideas. From there, we dig into orchestral percussion itself, how the role of percussionists continues to evolve, and how skills like drum set playing have increasingly become part of the orchestral vocabulary. Shawn shares fascinating insights into audition repertoire, why certain excerpts appear on audition lists, and how percussionists today must be prepared for a wider range of musical demands than ever before. We also spend time on Shawn's own musical lineage. Growing up in western Pennsylvania with a father who was both his band director and percussion teacher gave him an early immersion in music education. Later, studying with legendary Pittsburgh Symphony timpanist Stanley Leonard became a foundational experience that shaped the way he thinks about sound, tone production, and the role of percussion in the orchestra. One of my favorite parts of this conversation is hearing Shawn talk about timpani as a gateway into orchestral thinking. Because timpani sits inside the harmonic and structural core of so much orchestral repertoire, studying it opens a deeper understanding of how orchestras actually function musically. That perspective carries into everything from bass drum sound production to phrasing inside the orchestra. We also explore the many dimensions of Shawn's career—from his years performing with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra to his work with the North Carolina Symphony, his teaching at LSU, and his leadership role with the Spoleto Festival Orchestra, where he helps audition and mentor the next generation of orchestral musicians. This is a thoughtful conversation about musicianship, mentorship, and the long arc of a life spent in music.Key TakeawaysMusicality should lead technique — technical work becomes more meaningful when it serves a clear musical idea.Orchestral percussion continues to evolve — drum set and broader stylistic fluency are now part of many orchestral expectations.Studying timpani deepens understanding of the orchestra — it connects percussionists directly to the harmonic and structural core of the repertoire.Great teachers shape more than musicians — the process of learning music develops discipline, listening, and collaboration skills that transfer far beyond music.Mentorship matters — Shawn's studies with Stanley Leonard helped shape his musical thinking and approach to teaching.Professional musicianship requires adaptability — orchestral players must be ready for a wide range of tempos, conductors, and interpretations.Music careers can take many forms — performing, teaching, and arts leadership can all intersect in meaningful ways.Music from the EpisodeQueen - Molly Joyce (Shawn Galvin, percussion)Five Gestures - Brett William Dietz (Shawn Galvin, snare drum & LSU Hamiruge Percussion Ensemble - Dr. Brett Dietz, conductor)Letter from Home - Pat Metheny Group (Shawn Galvin, vibraphone)About the PodcastThe Bandwich Tapes is a podcast hosted by Brad Williams, featuring conversations with musicians, composers, producers, and creative thinkers about their musical journeys. The cat's story is the subject of a new classical composition that will be performed this weekend by the Metropolitan Orchestra of St. Louis alongside a concurrent reading of the children's book, “How Mr. Silver Stole the Show.” Author Kate Klise, composer and Mizzou professor Stefan Freund, and Metropolitan Orchestra of St. Louis principal conductor Roger Kaza, talk with us about Mr. Silver's story and the art it inspired. THE SPLENDID BOHEMIANS PRESENT "DOUBLE TROUBLE" - GETTING LOST IN A MYSTICAL MIST WITH ERROLL GARNER AND BIX BEIDERBECKE - TWO TITANS OF JAZZ TRANSPORT US TO REALMS OF MYSTERY. DOUBLE DOWN!!

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 10, 2026 10:53

Today we present two piano instrumentals that explore the mysteries of Mist.  Strictly speaking, a “mist” can be defined by some water vapor that obscures your vision, but how many more evocative instances can you think of where a mist appears in a story or film, usually preceding an arrival of some spiritual manifestation? There was a video game called “Myst” (spelled with a Y) which featured a series of puzzles saturated with a heady whiff of the arcane. Your sight is always obscured; your emotional restlessness is never assuaged.  Erroll Garner and Bix Beiderbecke were two jazz titans writing compositions separated by 30 years that hint at this other-worldly quality inherent in the idea of the Mist. Their music excites the senses and tugs at the heart simultaneously; it's music that lifts off and keeps insinuating an urge to maintain altitude in an unresolved quest for landing, but never deciding on a perch.ERROLL GARNERMost of you probably know Johnny Mathis's version of Misty, with lyrics by Johnny Burke, that was a monster hit of 1959, but Erroll Garner wrote the song as an instrumental 5 years earlier, on a plane flight to Chicago's OHare airport, after seeing a rainbow through the airplane window. That's a fitting image for the complicated feelings invoked here: a glimpse of hope through tears. Influenced by Earl Hines, Garner played with spontaneous timing changes, liquidy octaval melodies, and improvised chordal voicings, and his contribution to jazz evolution was to reconcile the gap between BeBop spontaneity and Orchestral formalism. His style was so free that he was dubbed “the happy man” because this joy he exuded was so palpable. Misty was concocted from the eternal music of the spheres - maybe because his feet were not on the ground when he composed it.BIX BEIDERBECKEThe comet of Bix Beiderbecke's talent was a mystery in itself: dead from alcohol in 1931 at the age of 28, his cornet style and compositional originality continues to fascinate almost 100 years later. A self taught musician, Bix appeared from podunk Iowa and immediately became a ragtime sensation at the height of the Jazz era with The Wolverines, then with Paul Whiteman's orchestra (along with Bing Crosby). He was a white man playing a traditionally black form of music, which was a novelty, and that made him easier to market to middle America - but such genius is color blind.Although renowned for his horn playing, he composed In a Mist on piano in 1927 (he was 24), and it's here that you see the influence of the impressionist composer Claude Debussy, the creator of such sensuous works as Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun and La Mer. Is this Jazz? How did he do it? Clearly, Bix was in touch with mystical forces beyond human understanding, or maybe, like Robert Johnson, he just made a deal with the devil. Either way, the spiritual quest suggested by these chord changes transports us into a misty continent of emotional confusion.

Sleeping at Last is the solo project of Illinois multi-instrumentalist Ryan O'Neal — and he's about to take the stage with the Chicago Philharmonic this holiday season. He's had music featured in shows including “Grey's Anatomy,” “The Vampire Diaries” and “Private Practice,” but O'Neal's catapult to success came when his song “Turning Page” landed a coveted spot in the 2011 “Twilight” film “Breaking Dawn – Part 1.” On Saturday, Nov. 29, O'Neal will join the Chicago Philharmonic at the Auditorium Theatre for “Home for the Holidays.” The performance includes orchestral arrangements of O'Neal's holiday covers and original songs. He sat down with Vocalo's Nudia Hernandez to discuss how he got in touch with the orchestra and give some insight into his creative process. This interview originally aired on Vocalo Radio 91.1 FM during Nudia in the Afternoons on Tuesday, Nov. 18. An old LP of Tōru Takemitsu's Coral Island and a conversation with a new friend about American Exceptionalism inspired today's episode, the “International Edition” of my ongoing series on Orchestral Song. Coral Island is still here, although I ended up using a later (and better) recording than the one in my collection. I also feature the work of composers Karol Szymanowski, Augustyn Bloch, Aminollah Hossein, Kaija Saariaho, Frederic Mompou, Ottorino Respighi, Fartein Valen, Bohuslav Martinů, and many others, performed by Gerald Finley, Andréa Guiot, Robert Tear, Dorothy Dorow, Halina Łukomska, Victoria de los Ángeles, Andrzej Hiolski, Bernard Kruysen, and Marianne Crebassa, for starters! I have been enjoying so much preparing these recent “potpourri” episodes, and this one is particularly chock full of surprises and discoveries! Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and author yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. By clicking on the following link (https://linktr.ee/CountermelodyPodcast) you can find the dedicated Countermelody website which contains additional content including artist photos and episode setlists. When was just 26 years old, Gustavo Dudamel arrived from Venezuela to become conductor and music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. He immediately became one of the world's most beloved figures in classical music. He's collaborated with pop stars (including Billie Eilish, Nas and Christina Aguilera). He's played the Super Bowl half-time show. He even the model for the main character in the hit tv series "Mozart in the Jungle". Sixteen years later, after making an enormous mark on the LA Phil and the city of LA, Gustavo Dudamel is preparing to move east, as music director and artistic director of the New York Philharmonic. He talks here about coming up as a musician and a budding conductor in "El Sistema", Venezuela's classical music training ground for children of all backgrounds. He describes conducting his toy figurines while listening to the world's greatest orchestras, before he even understood what conductors actually do. And he shares his love of music - all music - and his work to erase boundaries between audiences.
