Today we present two piano instrumentals that explore the mysteries of Mist. Strictly speaking, a “mist” can be defined by some water vapor that obscures your vision, but how many more evocative instances can you think of where a mist appears in a story or film, usually preceding an arrival of some spiritual manifestation? There was a video game called “Myst” (spelled with a Y) which featured a series of puzzles saturated with a heady whiff of the arcane. Your sight is always obscured; your emotional restlessness is never assuaged. Erroll Garner and Bix Beiderbecke were two jazz titans writing compositions separated by 30 years that hint at this other-worldly quality inherent in the idea of the Mist. Their music excites the senses and tugs at the heart simultaneously; it's music that lifts off and keeps insinuating an urge to maintain altitude in an unresolved quest for landing, but never deciding on a perch.ERROLL GARNERMost of you probably know Johnny Mathis's version of Misty, with lyrics by Johnny Burke, that was a monster hit of 1959, but Erroll Garner wrote the song as an instrumental 5 years earlier, on a plane flight to Chicago's OHare airport, after seeing a rainbow through the airplane window. That's a fitting image for the complicated feelings invoked here: a glimpse of hope through tears. Influenced by Earl Hines, Garner played with spontaneous timing changes, liquidy octaval melodies, and improvised chordal voicings, and his contribution to jazz evolution was to reconcile the gap between BeBop spontaneity and Orchestral formalism. His style was so free that he was dubbed “the happy man” because this joy he exuded was so palpable. Misty was concocted from the eternal music of the spheres - maybe because his feet were not on the ground when he composed it.BIX BEIDERBECKEThe comet of Bix Beiderbecke's talent was a mystery in itself: dead from alcohol in 1931 at the age of 28, his cornet style and compositional originality continues to fascinate almost 100 years later. A self taught musician, Bix appeared from podunk Iowa and immediately became a ragtime sensation at the height of the Jazz era with The Wolverines, then with Paul Whiteman's orchestra (along with Bing Crosby). He was a white man playing a traditionally black form of music, which was a novelty, and that made him easier to market to middle America - but such genius is color blind.Although renowned for his horn playing, he composed In a Mist on piano in 1927 (he was 24), and it's here that you see the influence of the impressionist composer Claude Debussy, the creator of such sensuous works as Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun and La Mer. Is this Jazz? How did he do it? Clearly, Bix was in touch with mystical forces beyond human understanding, or maybe, like Robert Johnson, he just made a deal with the devil. Either way, the spiritual quest suggested by these chord changes transports us into a misty continent of emotional confusion.
Interview by Ali WilliamsIf you've ever wondered what happens when progressive death metal collides head-on with a full-blown orchestra (spoiler: nobody wears a tux, but plenty of heads bang), Persefone's latest adventure has the answer. In a good vibes interview with HEAVY Magazine's Ali Williams, Bobby Verdeguer from Persefone takes us behind the scenes of the band's new live album, out now, and gives us a taste of the chaos, genius, and caffeine that went into its creation. Persefone's new release, Live In Andorra, isn't just another concert recording—it's a mad scientist experiment: death progressive metal and live orchestra in the same room. Recorded during a one-off orchestral show at the National Auditorium of Andorra in May 2024, the album celebrates the band's 20-year history and their return home after a decade, featuring a full collaboration with the Orquestra Nacional Clàssica d'Andorra. Bobby admits that making a live album in today's “attention-deficit” age is, in his words, “a stupid idea.” But when the end result is this sublime, who cares about market logic? If you want new music, you're out of luck—this is a celebration of the band's 20th anniversary, featuring songs from across their catalogue, played with enough complexity to make even a Swiss watch blush. What results when you have an orchestra, a death metal band, and two rehearsals—one the morning of the show? “Stressful” is an understatement. The orchestra arrived the day before the recording, and after a couple of quick run-throughs, it was showtime. The whole thing was captured live, meaning there was “extra pressure of not fucking things up,” as Bobby charmingly put it. The musical tightrope walk paid off, resulting in a performance that's as raw as it is sophisticated. The artwork for their latest release is mint, so you know the merch is gonna slap. As for vinyl? You'd better buy two copies: “One you open, one you keep sealed for street cred.” He's not joking about the collector mentality, either—just don't expect to find a Persefone vinyl in a bargain bin anytime soon. Touring has been relentless, including recent festival runs in the US and a debut Australian tour with Belakor and Orpheus Omega. Oh, and if you're ever planning to fly from Andorra to Australia, prepare for two days, four stopovers, and a test of your will to live (someone, please, sponsor these guys an airline). With the live album freshly set forth on the world, Persefone aren't about to rest on their laurels. Upcoming plans include shows in France, a stint on the 70,000 Tons of Metal cruise (yep, the floating festival of your dreams), and a US tour (still under wraps). Most importantly for fans: they're already working on a new studio album of fresh material, aiming to top even this ambitious milestone. If you're new to Persefone, Bobby promises this album is the perfect entry point—a wild snapshot of the band's evolution, energy, and international weirdness. For longtime fans, it's a high-octane victory lap, packed with classic tracks and orchestral bombast. In the immortal words of Bobby: “Go listen.” Live in Andorra is out now —get ready to be crushed, caressed, and possibly convinced you need more vinyl in your life. Sleeping at Last is the solo project of Illinois multi-instrumentalist Ryan O'Neal — and he's about to take the stage with the Chicago Philharmonic this holiday season. He's had music featured in shows including “Grey's Anatomy,” “The Vampire Diaries” and “Private Practice,” but O'Neal's catapult to success came when his song “Turning Page” landed a coveted spot in the 2011 “Twilight” film “Breaking Dawn – Part 1.” On Saturday, Nov. 29, O'Neal will join the Chicago Philharmonic at the Auditorium Theatre for “Home for the Holidays.” The performance includes orchestral arrangements of O'Neal's holiday covers and original songs. He sat down with Vocalo's Nudia Hernandez to discuss how he got in touch with the orchestra and give some insight into his creative process. This interview originally aired on Vocalo Radio 91.1 FM during Nudia in the Afternoons on Tuesday, Nov. 18. It was hosted, edited and produced by Nudia Hernandez, with production support from Morgan Ciocca and Talia Lopresti. An old LP of Tōru Takemitsu's Coral Island and a conversation with a new friend about American Exceptionalism inspired today's episode, the “International Edition” of my ongoing series on Orchestral Song. Coral Island is still here, although I ended up using a later (and better) recording than the one in my collection. I also feature the work of composers Karol Szymanowski, Augustyn Bloch, Aminollah Hossein, Kaija Saariaho, Frederic Mompou, Ottorino Respighi, Fartein Valen, Bohuslav Martinů, and many others, performed by Gerald Finley, Andréa Guiot, Robert Tear, Dorothy Dorow, Halina Łukomska, Victoria de los Ángeles, Andrzej Hiolski, Bernard Kruysen, and Marianne Crebassa, for starters! I have been enjoying so much preparing these recent “potpourri” episodes, and this one is particularly chock full of surprises and discoveries! Among Vittorio's selections are a passionate defence of classical music's influence on football, a brief history of goalkeepers in caps, the sort-of rise and fall of front-flip throw-ins, vanishingly small modern shinpads and players who performatively avoid walking on club badges in the tunnel. (mg)
A few weeks ago I had the idea of doing a program devoted to American orchestral song. It did not take me long to realize that once again “American [that is to say, US] Exceptionalism” was distorting my viewpoint, because there is a rich legacy of orchestral song not only in the United States, but also in both Canada and Latin America. Therefore I will concern myself separately with each of these diverse Americas. Today's episode is the first of two that plunges into a repertoire that, with a few exceptions, is, I daresay, virtually unknown to the majority of my audience: Latin American orchestral song. The exception is, of course, Heitor Villa-Lobos, but even his oeuvre reveals hidden riches. Though vocal music was not a focal point of his output, there remain, nonetheless, songs of his which are known throughout the world. I use these, and the semi-classical songs of Mexican Manuel M. Ponce, as a launching pad to this fascinating “dipping of the toes” into a repertoire that fully deserves our attention, and which includes a segment on another Mexican composer Silvestre Revueltas, as performed by a wide array of singers, including Bidú Sayão, Irma González, Ana Maria Martinez, Jennie Tourel, Lourdes Ambriz, Maura Moreira, and Nina Koshetz. We pay special tribute to iconic Brazilian (mezzo-)soprano Maria Lúcia Godoy, who recently died at the age of 100, and whom none other than Sayão claimed as her musical heir. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. By clicking on the following link (https://linktr.ee/CountermelodyPodcast) you can find the dedicated Countermelody website which contains additional content including artist photos and episode setlists. In this week's episode, host Marc Zyla welcomes the talented conductor Hisham Bravo Groover to discuss an extraordinary upcoming event—a video game concert that promises to be a breathtaking fusion of music and interactive entertainment.
In Episode 15 of The Choral Director's Toolbox, host Dr. William Baker explores The Orchestral Choral Instrument, urging conductors to approach the choir with the same expectation for metrical precision, rhythmic clarity, and expressive articulation typically reserved for orchestral sections. Learn why energized consonants and pure vowels must be mastered before a chorus can effectively join forces with an orchestra—and why the music itself must be conducted, not just the singers. This week's listener question delves into the rehearsal real estate of programming choral music. Today's inspiration features "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross" arranged by Gilbert Martin, performed by The William Baker Festival Singers from their 2002 "Sing and Ponder" album. Tune in for another episode of practical insight and choral inspiration.
The GRAMMY Award-winning team of composer Michael Daugherty, conductor David Alan Miller and the Albany Symphony returns with a new album comprising a set of remarkable works exploring associations with flight and space exploration, both tragic and triumphant. In this podcast, the composer explains the context and inspiration behind the three works on the programme: from aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart's mysterious disappearance in 1937, to rock 'n roll legend Buddy Holly's tragic death in a plane crash just hours after his final performance in 1959, and Neil Armstrong's role in the triumphant Apollo 11 moon mission in 1969.

When was just 26 years old, Gustavo Dudamel arrived from Venezuela to become conductor and music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. He immediately became one of the world's most beloved figures in classical music. He's collaborated with pop stars (including Billie Eilish, Nas and Christina Aguilera). He's played the Super Bowl half-time show. He even the model for the main character in the hit tv series "Mozart in the Jungle". Sixteen years later, after making an enormous mark on the LA Phil and the city of LA, Gustavo Dudamel is preparing to move east, as music director and artistic director of the New York Philharmonic. He talks here about coming up as a musician and a budding conductor in "El Sistema", Venezuela's classical music training ground for children of all backgrounds. He describes conducting his toy figurines while listening to the world's greatest orchestras, before he even understood what conductors actually do. And he shares his love of music - all music - and his work to erase boundaries between audiences.
British rock legend David Bowie called on saxophonist Donny McCaslin and his band to record Bowie's album, “Blackstar,” after checking out the jazz group's performance at the 55 Bar in Greenwich Village. Bowie never had a chance to to perform its songs live because he died two days after the album's release in 2016. With the backing of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, “Blackstar Symphony” will have its Midwest premiere this Friday at Stifel Theater.
