Scientists say there has been a major drop in the population of leatherback sea turtles off the U.S. West Coast. 科学家说,美国西海岸的棱皮海龟人口大幅下降。 Researchers say there was an 80 percent drop in one group of leatherbacks found off the California coast over the past 30 years. One recent study found a 5.6 percent yearly decrease in the population. 研究人员说,在过去30年中,加利福尼亚海岸在加利福尼亚海岸发现的一组棱皮术下降了80%。 最近的一项研究发现,人口年度下降了5.6%。 Leatherbacks are massive sea turtles dating back to the time of the dinosaurs. The animals can grow up to 1.5 meters in length and weigh as much as 680 kilograms. 棱皮是可以追溯到恐龙时代的巨大海龟。 这些动物的长度长达1.5米,重达680公斤。 The leatherback sea turtles found along the U.S. Pacific coast are actually born thousands of kilometers away, on beaches in Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands. The animals migrate 11,000 kilometers across the Pacific Ocean to feed on jellyfish in waters off the U.S. West Coast. Then, they swim back. As many as 60 percent of the leatherback turtles born in the western Pacific Ocean are believed to make the trip to California. Scientists are not sure why some do and others do not. Some go farther north, to waters off Oregon or Washington state. Scott Benson is an ecologist with the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) fisheries service in Monterey, California. He has studied the turtles for many years and recently co-wrote a study on leatherback populations. Benson told The Associated Press that the long trip across the Pacific demonstrates the strength of the sea turtles. “There are birds that go farther, but they fly. There's a whale shark that might swim a little further, but it doesn't have to come up for air,” he said. The leatherbacks, he noted, are “actually pushing water all the way across the Pacific Ocean.” 他说:“有些鸟会走得更远,但是它们会飞。有一条鲸鲨可能会走得更远,但不必升起空气。” 他指出,棱皮的背包“实际上是在太平洋上一直推着水。”

This week's episode is with Kristin Scott Benson! It was a great chat with Kristin, all things banjo and beyond. Listening to her solos and talking about who inspired her to play and special guest barks from Fisher the dog. Talking about different personalities and how we handle the business side of music, performing and teaching. Band dynamics and what it's like being a side person, and being grateful for the different roles in a band. Having stage fright, and struggling with nerves. Being in a band with all guys. Strategies for nerves, for the right hand, and for getting a groove. How to stay centered and focused when playing “What never gets old is the communal spirit of a band when the groove and drive are right” https://www.ksbbanjo.com https://kristinscottbenson.bandcamp.com https://www.patreon.com/banjochat

Here's my musical performance of a poem from a video game. If that's not remarkable enough, it's a piece for May Day, The international workers day. Have I intrigued you? The poem appears, spoken by a character in the game Night in the Woods and the presumed authors are Bethany Hockenberry and Scott Benson. The music is my own composition. Celtic music accounts for about 90% of what I listen to, Mediaeval & Rennaisance making up most of the rest." Jim Burns replied: "What are your doing for St Patrick's Day? Having friends over to celebrate, listen to music and have adult beverages". He says he'll be celebrating with "The 3 P's - Parades, parties and pubs." I have a show on Wednesday night and will be playing an interview with Kyf Brewer with the Barleyjuice Band from Pennsylvania and playing a few new tunes from Daori Farrell, the High Kings, Doolin', Barleyjuice and Martin Hayes. I hope that you have a great time and fun shows." Eric Guarin (gwa - reen) emailed a question: "Hi Mark, over time the Podcast has included bands from literally all over playing a pretty wide variety of music. Some of it strays quite far from trad pub music - I'm not complaining, it's all great, but it does make me wonder: How do you decide what to play and if it is "Celtic" enough? Cheers,"
No City Administration has abused the modestly funded Detroit Public Library as the current administration has. They do it with contemptuous indifference to the consequences and aggressive harm when Library leadership does not accept their dictates. Now their faithful collaborator on City Council, Scott Benson, is pushing City Council to seek the City's full control of the Library system. Criminal Fraud on Library Funds By state law, the City of Detroit serves the fiduciary functions of the Detroit Public Library (DPL). Hence the City set up and controls bank accounts and issues checks as the Library requests them. In 2021 the Library Commission was told that two persons had created fraudulent paperwork to initiate wire transfers of over $600,000 from a DPL account or accounts to accounts that they controlled locally and in other states. The requests were apparently routed through Malaysia. Some requests were seen as suspect and not processed, but the culprit(s) got away with over $407,000. The Library immediately contacted its General Counsel, the Dickinson Wright law firm, to handle the informational and legal issues stemming from these crimes. They were told that that two City employees in the Finance Department were responsible for the wire fraud. The City terminated their employment but has not sought prosecution of them, they were also told. Today the City says that "as far as they know," they were not City employees. The City shares no information with the Library about the investigation into their stolen funds. No explanation is given as to why prosecution(s) are not being pursued. The Riverwise Podcast is bringing together Detroit citizens to consider new and forms of resistance to continuing economic and political marginalization in communities of color. For over three years now, the Riverwise collective has created media that depicts local activism and the profound new work being done in Detroit neighborhoods. Through the quarterly Riverwise magazine, Riverwise community conversations, and the Riverwise Writing Workshop, we're developing our collective voice.

It's time for Side B of my conversation on DUMB AND DUMBER with Scott Benson (@bombsfall on Twitter and IG). In this episode we finish our discussion of the movie, and finally get to the soundtrack. Which, if you didn't know, is incredibly good. In this half, we talk about the lines that stick with us, continue getting to the bottom of what makes this movie not creepy, give love to The Primitives, dig into the rest of the jangle-pop, very 1994 soundtrack and more. Alright, welp, see you later.Keep up with Scott at www.bombsfall.comSupport Night in the Woods here: http://www.nightinthewoods.com/Support the show on Patreon! Today I'm joined once again by the co-creator of Night in the Woods, Scott Benson (@bombsfall), to talk about DUMB AND DUMBER. But I'm doing this one a little differently. Since it was an especially long episode, I'm splitting it in two, with the next half releasing next Friday. Join us in this episode, as we talk about the friendship between Harry and Lloyd, the producer's attempts to screw over Jeff Daniels, what makes this movie still work in 2022, and more. Given the length we also get into plenty of other topics, including the violence in the Jurassic Park novel, hologram music performances, and how poorly ACE VENTURA has held up over time (but also how funny the rhino scene in the sequel is). So give it a listen, and find out whether you actually *can* triple stamp a double stamp.Support Night in the Woods here if you haven't yet, it's a fantastic game: http://www.nightinthewoods.com/Support the show on Patreon! In this season premiere, Em and the Packbats set themselves a challenge: create a prologue to a YA creature horror story by first writing and then playing a new mini roleplaying game. Something is in this abandoned mine, and it has just been awoken. Content warnings on the game part of the episode: body horror, allusion to retching, implied death by suffocation, and mention of bugs. First, describe the situation, establishing the scene around the mine entrance and the route the geocacher travels trying to escape. Plan out the key points for each turn - jumping a fence, starting up a hill, catching a glimpse of their car, moments like that which can function as prompts for the descriptions that come later. There should be enough that, after adding in the ending, each player will get an equal number of card draws and the scene will last an appropriately dramatic length of time. Also, shuffle your deck of cards. The game starts with one player describing the geocacher fleeing out the entrance of the mine. From there, players take turns drawing cards and adding to the scene with: a hint of the monster, based on the prompt associated with the card; and the next piece of description of the geocacher fleeing. Be careful of each others' limits - this is a horror game, you don't want to accidentally cross lines - but being mindful of that constraint, be vivid with your descriptions. Do not reveal or establish too much about the monster, however. The game ends with the first player drawing their last card, from which they describe the geocacher being caught with one final hint of the monster. prompt grid: hearts = sight diamonds = sound clubs = touch spades = smell 2 = pick your own 3 = wet 4 = angular 5 = scratchy 6 = fresh 7 = vivid 8 = crackly 9 = animalistic 10 = soapy J = metamorphizing Q = stretchy K = dusty A = deep -- This episode was made as part of the One Mic Stand Podcast Jam! Ashley and Stephanie sit down with Scott Benson, animator, illustrator, writer, and co-creator of Night in the Woods, to talk about how horror has influenced his creative work, what projects he's working on now, and the wonderfully spooky world of folk horror. From Häxan (1922) to The Wicker Man (1973), Kill List (2011), Midsommar (2019), and more, folk horror takes audiences on a wild (and often trippy) ride through the horrors of the natural world and the stories we tell about our connection to each other. Join us as we uncover the subgenre's roots and discuss how the themes have evolved since its inception.

Scott Benson, one of the three developers behind Night in the Woods, says that the team has cut ties with co-creator Alec Holowka following yesterday's allegations of abuse and sexual assault. “We take such allegations seriously as a team. As a result and after some agonizing consideration, we are cutting ties with Alec,” Benson tweeted via the Night in the Woods twitter account. Canadian independent game developer Alec Holowka, whose credits include Night in the Woods, Aquaria, and others, has died. Holowka was a fixture in the independent game community, having co-founded Bit Blot with Spelunky creator Derek Yu, Infinite Ammo where he was working on an original project, and Night in the Woods studio Infinite Fall. Holowka was a multi-faceted game developer, versed in programming, sound, music, and game design. Bit Blot's Aquaria won the Seumas McNally Grand Prize at the 2007 Independent Games Festival, as did Infinite Fall's Night in the Woods at the 2018 IGF. News of Holowka's passing comes at the end of a tumultuous week in the game industry. Holowka was one of several game developers accused of sexual assault and abusive behavior. Following accusations of abuse by game developer and writer Zoe Quinn earlier this week, and additional allegations of emotional abuse of a recent colleague, developers behind Night in the Woods said they would be cutting ties with Holowka. His sister Eileen Holowka announced his passing on Twitter on Saturday (her account has since been locked). She wrote: "Alec Holowka, my brother and best friend, passed away this morning. Those who know me will know that I believe survivors and I have always done everything I can to support survivors, those suffering from mental illnesses, and those with chronic illnesses. Alec was a victim of abuse and he also spent a lifetime battling mood and personality disorders. I will not pretend that he was not also responsible for causing harm, but deep down he was a person who wanted only to offer people care and kindness. It took him a while to figure out how. "Over the last few years, with therapy and medication, Alec became a new person - the same person he had always been but without any of the darkness. He was calm and happy, positive and loving. Obviously, change is a slow process and it wasn't perfect but he was working towards rehabilitation and a better life. "In the last few days, he was supported by many Manitoba crisis services, and I want to thank everyone there for their support. I want to thank Adam Saltsman for staying up late talking with us and reminding Alec that there was a future. "My family has and always will be the most important thing to me. Please give us time to heal. We tried our best to support Alec, but in the end he had felt he had lost too much." In a later tweet she added: "And in case it's not already fucking obvious, Alec *specifically said* he wished the best for Zoe [Quinn] and everyone else, so don't use our grief as an excuse to harass people. Go outside, take care of someone, and work towards preventing these kinds of things in the first place." #gaminglife #like #apexlegends #gamingmemes #anime #nintendoswitch #fortnitememes #pcgamer #retrogaming #gameplay #battleroyale #pro #destiny #art #bhfyp #blackops #fortniteclips #callofduty #twitchstreamer #geek #youtuber #lol #rdr #gamingcommunity #minecraft #overwatch #sony #fun #instagram #online --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/pixel-sultan/support

In one of the early sequences of the celebrated new grateful dead documentary Long Strange Trip from Amazon studios, much is made of Jerry Garcia's first real girlfriend. She's feisty and adorable and ablaze with love for art and the bohemian life. She's planning to make a life with Jerry until! He picks up the banjo and starts practicing hours a day. And she leaves him. Man I wish Jerry could see the roots music scene today. Banjo has been, to use a term that's ubiquitous now in politics, normalized. It's' still essential to bluegrass and its progressive manifestations of course, but it's also reconnected to its folky traditions, strummed lustily if simplistically in the music of Mumford and Sons and Old Crow Medicine Show. And in recent years, the banjo wended its way back into pop country and into indie rock as a texture on records by Modest Mouse, Sufjan Stephens and others. The most visible and in-demand banjo player of this decade is and has been Noam Pikelny of the band Punch Brothers. The Chicago area native discovered the instrument and bluegrass culture before he was ten years old. In 2010, he became the inaugural recipient of the Steve Martin Prize for Excellence in Banjo and Bluegrass. In this hour Craig talks banjo with Pikelny as well as leading players Ned Luberecki and Kristin Scott Benson.

We are back! David and I sit down for the second half of a chat with Scott Benson. We pick up with his admission that relationships with folks who aren't making things can be very difficult—something that I personally find very relatable. In the year that the AP Collection has developed I have lost touch with many of the people that I once spent time with regularly. Not only am I consumed with generating content, but I've found the average social setting in Pittsburgh, (a bar), where people aren't creating is now very tedious. We all agree that finding the right work environment in order for you to thrive is critical and (if possible / you're really lucky) it could coincide with doing what you love. This line of conversation allows us to hit on topics such as Scott's DIY visual style and the much anticipated, Night in the Woods. After listening to this interview I spent some time revisiting Scott's work and have so many more questions to ask. I'll just sit here and kick myself while y'all enjoy our chat! The following is a series of mini clips featuring myself, Scott Benson, David Turner, and Jerome Charles. This is the first of a two part chat with Scott Benson (a.k.a. @bombsfall), animator and illustrator. We discuss his childhood growing up in a very religious and conservative family, playing in ska bands, and his transition into freelance illustration and animation. These topics however reveal more than Scott's origins but also his perspective on how he creates. Similar to other successful and established creatives, he has a DIY and punk-like attitude about skill building and crafting his art. Self-taught, his focus in the beginning was to, "do and do it well"–which he has accomplished. Currently, Scott is working on a video game with Alec Holowka called Night in the Woods a topic which we discuss at great length in the second half of this two part interview which will be released next Friday, February 7th, 2014. Today's chat reveals more about Scott's background and his short, But I'm a Nice Guy. We also gush about books, ginger ale, and myriad other things that I hope you enjoy!
