You like SVWAG? Their early work was a little too negative for my taste. But when SHUX came out in '20, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole podcast has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the episodes a big boost. They've been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think SVWAG has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor. In '23, SVWAG released this; episode 251, their most accomplished episode. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "gullet regurgitation". An observation so catchy, most people probably don't think about the meaning. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of consumption and the importance of digestion. It's also a personal statement about the podcast itself. We apologize for the poor quality of Mark's half of the audio this week. We offer two possible explanations. One is that Walker, motivated as he is by spite and malice, engaged in an elaborate act of sabotage so as to undermine Mark in public. The other is that Mark (the editor, mind you) messed up the audio settings. I agree that the latter is too improbable, too conspiratorial, to take seriously--but we include it for the sake of comprehensiveness. Even the steadfastly Imperial Americans are familiar with metric measurements of distance, volume, and temperature; but alas, the metric French Republican calendar has fallen by the wayside. Consisting of 12 months of exactly 30 days each (3 10-day weeks) with 5 (or 6, for leap years) interstitial days called "complementary days." I mean, you couldn't call them holidays what with your trying to purge religious influence on your calendar! In a fun twist, each of the 360 normal days, instead of Saint's Days, was meant to commemorate the "treasures of the rural economy." Like horseradish day (Frimaire 12), or rabbit day (Nivôse 15). Even more exotic was metric time, and don't get me started on that.Games Played Last Week:01:31 -Tobago: Volcano (Bruce Allen, Zoch Verlag, 2020)03:50 -Ascension Tactics: Miniatures Deckbuilding Game (Justin Gary & Ryan Sutherland, Stone Blade Entertainment, 2021)06:18 -Uprising: Curse of the Last Emperor (Cornelius Cremin, Pawel Mazur, & Dirk Sommer, Nemesis.Games, 2021)08:50 -Resist! Yo part two of our Ohga episode! This side we talk about music. Specifically Ohga''s music and how he got started. Him winning a stack of money as high as Mt Fuji, working with other Japanese artists such as Kojoe. We share some music, discuss Hip-hop hand orientation, if Del the Funky Homosapien was a top 5 west coast emcee in the 90s, Mega shares some old Micranots shit, we discuss what we were listening to in that era and Busta's buff ass voice. We share a few tracks as well. A few from Ohga's back catalog, a couple from Flat Stanley's new project, "If Not Now, When?" and also a track from the new Gangstarr album. You know the vibes. Were gonna be collaborating with Shux and Ohga on some new Tokyo Hiphop community video content. So pay attention to that. Like subscribe and share. @megalateshow
Japanese emcee, Ohga, has had a long and amazing career. He first found hip-hop culture while growing up in New York but right around adulthood he would return back to his parents home country of Japan. In both places hes felt somewhat outside of each culture but it also provided him with a unique outlook on both. We talk a lot about his personal life experiences in both the states and here, writing raps in Japanese and English, how the languages differ grammatically and how poetic devices in English differ from Japanese. We talk about his early love of Biggie and a bunch of other stuff. The big homie, Shux Wun of Music & Strength, also joins in as guest co-host. He and Ohga have been friends and working together for several years. Check this episode out and make sure you tune in to part 2. Drops on Tuesday. One must learn as a child that just because something is difficult does not mean it isn't worth doing. Sometimes we here at SVWAG feel that the corollary for adults is that just because something is difficult doesn't mean it is worthwhile. Some hard things should just be avoided. It's hard to drive a nail through your own skull, but it doesn't follow that it's necessarily a prime opportunity for self-improvement that ought to be pursued. We're joined by the Blue Tank for a quick look back at SHUX, before we dive into a discussion on games that are better than their mechanics suggest. These are games that we might describe as not very good, but somehow still give us incredible experiences that we find distinct and unique. But that makes them good, right? Before we lose all credibility, we talk about Kingdomino Duel, Panic on Wall Street!, and Blood on the Clocktower. 02:22 - SHUX 06:27 - Kingdomino Duel 11:29 - Panic on Wall Street! 18:52 - Blood on the Clocktower 23:48 - The Resistance: Avalon 36:57 - Experiences that transcend mechanics 38:02 - Fuji Flush 38:58 - Happy Salmon 39:40 - True Colors 39:40 - A Question of Scruples 40:32 - Zombicide: Black Plague 41:26 - Hundreds of Horses 49:30 - Loopin' Louie
Matt and Quinns are briefly joined by Pip for an sleep-deprived natter about some interesting games. Obscurio (16:14) sounds like Wizard-Dixit with traitors, and incredibly summoned a cheer from the crowd simply for use of the word “acetate”. Tumblin’ Dice (21:05) got a little love, but probably deserves more than anyone can give it, before Matt then went on to talk about playing the award-winning RPG Mothership (24:50) - a sci-fi horror system that conveys the relatable experience of waking up after a very long time and immediately being attacked by stress. We were thrilled to find that many of those who’d managed to check it out at SHUX finally understood the hype from our review of Blood on the Clocktower (35:13) - a beautiful beast that is more than the sum of its frankly dastardly parts. Delving into Vast: the Mysterious Manor (39:58) - an asymmetrical game in which you can literally play as the mysterious manor - left us with mixed feelings about pacing but strong feelings towards skeletons, before we finally talked about food and/or animals with Yum Yum Island (45:36) and Nickelodeon Splat Attack! (50:06). Apologies for the quality of the audio in this episode - we had some issues with the room that we weren’t able to resolve. If you’d like to listen to this episode with “moving pictures”, you can also watch it on Youtube!

Yo peace, you! Another long and action packed episode fo dat azz. Rank these MCs: Del, Inspectah Deck and Big Boi!!!! Yeah we asked the homie Shux the same question. There is a correct answer and it is not information. Joining us today iShux Wun. Hes is kinda of a Tokyo Hiphop scene OG. Not in the sense that hes been working in the hiphop scene for decades or is super well known in the scene but in the sense that he was trying to expose the tokyo scene for american audiences way back in the aughts. Its difficult to find anyone else that was really doing it at his level of success. He also used to rock with The Breakdown in Shibuya. BING! Shux was working with a now defunct hiphop media outlet, IAMHIPHOP DOT COM, interviewing major artists, following tours, and eventually ended in Tokyo working on his project, The Shux Files. He was interviewing and documenting the scene out here in Tokyo way back in the aughts. He probably wouldnt suggest it but you can find a bunch of those videos on Youtube and theyre dope.. We talked to Shux about his life in hiphop culture and some of his experiences interviewing major artists. Working in the tokyo scene with locals and other gaijin mfers. Also we just talked shit about whatever per usual. Shout out to the Breakdown!!! Shux brought super OG Huntley Nicholas with him. Huntley is a walking history book and did the sound work for the the 1983 documentary, Breakin N Enterin. Which detailed the then newly emerging west coast b-boy poppin and lockin scene. Huntley didnt speak much but were hoping to have him back on the show. The super elusive mega late show member, D Dahlinger, was also here as usual. This episode also includes our new segment. An ongoing project to rank and debate the greatest and not so great albums since 2010. Zoom in on that. Shout out to O-side California, Digital Mozart, and Mike Larry Draw!
