It's that time of the month again, the boys are hopped up on smelling salts and ready to talk Stephen King (Carrie, IT, The Shining)! This month it's cult classic, Salem's Lot or 'Salem's Lot, whichever you prefer. In this podcast, your favorite goons review both the book and movie, so you can don't have to (they even touch on Jerusalem's Lot and One for the Road). Just sit back and enjoy impressing your friends or the host at your local pub's Wednesday night trivia with your knowledge about a horror movie that is so old, the Sony Walkman was only months old at the time of its release. This made for TV adaptation was directed by Tobe Hooper (Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Poltergeist, Life Force) and stars David Soul (Starsky & Hutch, Magnum Force) as young, brooding novelist: Ben Mears. Ben returns to a town from his youth, only to find that it is riddled with vampires! This marks the film debut of the iconic, Mr. Barlow, whose visage you've likely seen on a crusty punk's leather jacket sometime in your life. 'Salem's Lot marks King's second novel, following his seemingly overnight success with Carrie. Fred Willard (Anchor Man, Best in Show) somewhat steals the show as Mr. Crockett in his silky shorts, while James Mason (20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Lolita, North by Northwest) plays Mr. Barlow's familiar: Mr. Straker. A young Bonnie Bedelia (Die Hard) plays Susan Norton, Ben Mears' love interest. If you ever have feedback or recommendations on future episodes, please let us know at slasherspod@gmail.com. Here comes Mister Flip, to chase you out of Jerusalem's Lot. Autumn Greer joins me to talk about this seminal retelling of Bram Stoker's Dracula, as mysterious men named Barlowe and Straker move into town and children seem to be rising from the dead. The events of this book have a great bearing on the final Dark Tower titles, so I'd encourage you to listen in.

The short stories collected in Stephen King's Night Shift were written over more than a decade--some originally published in 1968, others printed for the first time in this book. As such, the stories, while having certain similarities, are also wildly varied from the gothic horror of "Jerusalem's Lot" to the more ghastly comedy found in "Gray Matter" to the realistic, personal drama of "The Woman in the Room." "The Last Rung on the Ladder", a Night Shift original, is a dramatic short story in which a man recounts one day when he was ten years old, and he and his little sister played a dangerous game that almost had fatal consequences. Now join Arnie for this review review of "The Last Rung on the Ladder"!
Stephen King's "Jerusalem's Lot" tells the story of Charles Boone and his servant Calvin. In 1850 the two men move to Preacher's Corners, Maine where they stay at a large house left to Charles by his estranged cousin. The townspeople feel the two men must be mad to stay in the haunted mansion, and crazier still to set foot in the nearby ghost town of Jerusalem's Lot. What the two men discover will reveal secrets from Boone's family history as well as the evil that consumed 'Salem's Lot. This short story, first published as the lead tale in Stephen King's Night Shift collection, was sold as an earlier tale from the town of Jerusalem's Lot--the location of King's 'Salem's Lot. The story is now appended to paperback and eBook versions of that bestselling vampire novel. How does it tie into the longer book, and is it required reading for King fans? Listen to Arnie's review to find out in this podcast continuing our Stephen King series! And join Arnie, Stuart, and Jakob at nowplayingpodcast.com to hear their reviews of the three 'Salem's Lot TV and movie adaptations!
Some questions lingered when Stephen King's 'Salem's Lot ended. Were all the vampires killed? Due to the success of the novel, and to help publicize the paperback edition of the book, the author returned to the Maine town of Jerusalem's Lot for his short story "One For the Road." Taking place several years after vampires first settled in Maine, King tells the story of three men who must venture into the ghost town to rescue a stranded woman and child. The story was first published in Maine Magazine, then reprinted in Stephen King's first short story collection Night Shift, and is now appended to paperback and eBook versions of 'Salem's Lot. What happened in the story and is it worth the quick read? Listen to Arnie's review to find out in this podcast continuing our Stephen King series! And join Arnie, Stuart, and Jakob at nowplayingpodcast.com to hear their reviews of the three 'Salem's Lot TV and movie adaptations!
