Jimi Hendrix is widely regarded as the best guitarist of all time, not least by our very own Chula. With unparalleled technical mastery, showmanship and innovation, Hendrix seemed to be one with his instrument. Over the course of his upsettingly brief career, he redefined the musical landscape of his time, and cemented himself as a cultural legend of the late 60's and early 70's.Yet behind the myth was a shy young man, whose early years were difficult, unsettled, and marked with emotional and physical neglect. He found music as an escape from his chaotic upbringing; but struggled with the immense fame and fortune that came along with it. In the final episode of the season, Chula goes beyond the myth of Jimi Hendrix and explores the public triumphs and private pains of his ultimate guitar hero. Drawing on his work as a psychotherapist, he discusses how Hendrix's unstable childhood, particularly as a child of alcoholic (ACA), might have contributed to his ability to experience and cope with fame and success in adulthood. This week's ‘ One For The Road' is ‘Electric Ladyland' - the third and final studio album by the Jimi Hendrix Experience - which Chula believes “everyone should listen to once before they die”. Today, the name “Sid Vicious” is practically synonymous with punk, nihilism and self-destruction. But before Sid, there was a young boy named Simon John Ritchie whose peripatetic childhood was marked by neglect, instability and drugs. As bassist of the Sex Pistols, Sid's rise to fame was driven not by musical talent but by his anarchic persona and darkly violent streak - “a living circus” as his fellow band member once described him. He was celebrated for his worst and pushed into the spotlight with little to no duty of care, eventually dying of an overdose at only 21 years old.In this episode, Matt takes us on the complex and shockingly short journey of Sid Vicious - or rather, Simon John Ritchie. Drawing on his experience as a mental health professional, Matt offers a more compassionate perspective on the infamous punk icon, revealing a sad but all too familiar tale of exploitation and spectacle at the expense of vulnerable individuals.Today's ‘One For The Road' is the Youtuber Mary Spender. Few artists embody the term “iconoclast” more than Sinead O'Connor. A voice of rebellion, she spoke truth to power and stood for what she believed in, regardless of personal and professional cost.As a survivor of unspeakable trauma herself, Sinead denounced child abuse in the catholic church on live television years before the world was ready to hear it. And though this infamous act saw her blacklisted from TV networks and venues, she maintained that it put her career “back on the right track”. She was, and always would be, a protest singer - never a pop star.A new Sinead-devotee, Sam returns to tell us the story of the fearless feminist icon with compassion and admiration. Together with Matt and Chula, she reflects on how the media portrayal of Sinead O'Connor had insidiously fed her own pre-conceptions and unconscious biases. This week's ‘One For The Road' is the seminal feminist book ‘Women Who Run With The Wolves: Contacting the Power of the Wild Woman' by Clarissa Pinkola Estes. We are kicking off Empathy For The Devil Season 2 with perhaps our most requested artist - Amy Winehouse. A once-in-a-generation talent, Amy burst onto the scene in the mid-2000's with an inimitable soulful voice and deeply emotive lyrics. She shone brightly then flamed out right in front of our eyes, receiving an appalling lack of empathy as she became consumed by her addictions. Her story is a tragic tale of a would-be jazz club singer who found herself thrust into the machine industry, coming of age under the weight of fame and in the unforgiving public eye. Matt Thomas - Creative Lead and Co-Founder of Attune - guides us through the first episode of the season, and examines the harsh criticism and cruel mockery (often laced with thinly veiled misogyny) which Amy endured right when she needed help the most. Taking a kind and compassionate approach, he unpacks the modern tragedy of a unique talent taken far too soon, remembering just how fortunate we were to hear that extraordinary voice. This week's ‘One For The Road' is the podcast ‘A History of Rock Music in 500 Songs', written and presented by Andrew Hickey. It's a brilliantly researched, eye-opening look at the history of rock from the swing era to the end of the millennium. It's incredible that they can do this major surgery and just two weeks later I am walking. I mean, I am still working hard every day to strengthen my leg, but just wow. Nevertheless, I only had two episodes in the can. And I'm struggling to stay on top of the podcast, let alone launch a Kickstarter. But the Kickstarter is designed to promote the podcast, so it makes sense to launch it as soon as possible. Anyway, if you love the podcast, hearing all of this great music each and every week, even when I'm kinda down for the count. If you want to preserve your love of the best Celtic songs and tunes of 2024. If you want to celebrate Celtic culture through music, please consider supporting the Kickstarter for the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. THANK YOU PATRONS OF THE PODCAST! You are why I keep sharing new episodes four times per month. Your kindness pays for our engineer, graphic designer, Celtic Music Magazine editor, and promotion of the podcast. Your kindness allows me to buy the music I play here. It also pays for my time creating the show each and every week. As a patron, you get ad - free and music - only episodes before regular listeners. You get to vote in the Celtic Top 20. You get free music downloads and sheet music. And you get a private feed to listen to the show or you can listen through the Patreon app.  All that for as little as $3 per month. I was also happy to hear you mention my artwork for the upcoming kickstarter album pin. However, I need to say, my name is Toler. I know my email is MrChristopherPatrick, but my full name is Christopher Patrick Toler. Having a couple of cousins who are ALSO named Chris Toler, (and wanting the signature 'Chris P.' for a comic strip I also do, prompted the use of my middle name. I now find myself attempting to start a brand, 'Tolergraphics,' and believe having my correct name mentioned along with talk of my designs would be helpful. Thank you in advance for addressing this, Christopher (Patrick) Toler P.S. Still love listening to the podcast. I'm happy to be a small part of it!” Cheryl Arvio emailed: "Dear Marc, Loved the interview with Shannon Heaton, especially hearing about her time in Chicago and playing in sessions. My partner has known John Williams for years, and we are actually going to Brendan and Siobhan McKinney's restaurant tonight!  They host sessions there on Sundays. Great coincidence to hear them mentioned on your show just as we were planning to go to their place for dinner and a James Joyce program! If we run into them, I'll mention having heard the shout out on Irish & Celtic Music Podcast! Best, Cheryl"

On this weeks episode of One For The Road we are joined by Alison Calder. Alison shares her journey to sobriety from walking into AA at the age of 24, to finally stopping drinking at the age of 39, and everything in-between. Alison talks about how working in the wine industry, and then owning her own wine company impacted her own drinking, and how she finally managed to remove alcohol completely. She puts her sobriety down to finding acceptance, creating a life she doesn't want to escape from, bringing in strong daily non-negotiables, finding joy in the little things and living in alignment with her values. Alison has re-trained as a positive psychology coach, specialising in helping people to stop drinking, and to re-discover themselves. This involves the deep exploratory work around the reasons that people drink, how to deal with cravings and triggers, and uncovering and working through any ambivalence that people may have around alcohol. She then works to guide clients to rediscover themselves, answering the bigger questions around who they really are, what they really want, what their values are, and what brings them joy. She does this through 1-1 coaching, group coaching, group programmes and workshops. She also works with community alcohol services which has given her even more insight into alcohol, and the impact that it has on people's lives. www.instagram.com/alisoncalderalcoholcoachwww.facebook.com/alisoncaldercoaching www.alisoncalder.comIf you want to connect with me via Instagram, you can find me on the instahandle @Soberdave https://www.instagram.com/soberdave/or via my website https://davidwilsoncoaching.com/Provided below are links for services offering additional help and advice.www.drinkaware.co.uk/advice/alcohol-support-serviceshttps://nacoa.org.uk/Show producer- Daniella Attanasio-MartinezInstagram - @TheDaniellaMartinezhttps://www.instagram.com/thedaniellamartinez/www.instagram.com/grownuphustle Hosted on Acast. On this weeks episode of One For The Road i am joined by Lee Anderson, an experienced Mindset and Wellbeing Coach, he was brought up in and around pubs where drinking was an expectation, having his first drink at 11 years old. Growing up in an environment without a dad meant he was expected to be responsible at an early age and throughout his teens and early twenties alcohol helped suppress his feelings, mask his emotions but also to make him feel more socially confident and accepted. Lee struggled with his sexuality, eventually coming out as gay in his mid twenties, got into a relationship where alcohol was a way of coping with the emotional abuse and toxic behaviour from his then partner. The breakdown of that relationship led to him losing everything he worked hard for and having to move back in with mum. He stopped drinking for a 18 months, met his now husband and outwardly life was good. Drugs and alcohol started to filter back in and life began to unravel, leading to two suicide attempts and eventually a mental breakdown. After relocated to France to start a new life his drinking became heavier and his behaviour was starting to impact his relationship and that was when he decided to go sober and repair his relationship with alcohol, he's been sober for 4 years now and life couldn't be better. He uses his personal and professional experience to coach, educate and support others mentally and emotionally to unlearn learnt behaviours to achieve better for themselves. Lee also hosts his own podcast called The Struggling Mind podcast where he chats to everyday people who have overcome adversity. He's an ambassador for The Lighthouse Charity where he travels the whole of the country delivering talks to people within the construction industry about the free support available from the charity and sharing his story to inspire others to reach out for support.https://www.instagram.com/leeandersoncoaching/https://www.leeandersoncoaching.com/https://open.spotify.com/show/13Hx2VN9L62ta3nMto5NmH?si=d809bf1d488f45f6&nd=1&dlsi=d2719481e12a4154If you want to connect with me via Instagram, you can find me on the instahandle @Soberdave https://www.instagram.com/soberdave/or via my website https://davidwilsoncoaching.com/Provided below are links for services offering additional help and advice.www.drinkaware.co.uk/advice/alcohol-support-serviceshttps://nacoa.org.uk/Show producer- Daniella Attanasio-MartinezInstagram - @TheDaniellaMartinezhttps://www.instagram.com/thedaniellamartinez/www.instagram.com/grownuphustle Hosted on Acast. On this weeks episode of One For The Road i am joined by Abigail Burrows, a professional flute player, admits that she's never had a healthy relationship with alcohol and started drinking at a very young age. She was an exceptionally talented child and was offered a place at a specialist music school aged 8. She had a busy international performing career throughout her childhood but in her late teens, she was drinking very heavily to cope with burn-out and guilt, unable to play the flute anymore and dropping out of the Royal College of Music. Later in life she returned to music and even managed to stop drinking for 5 ½ years. Celebrating this achievement with a glass of champagne, she believed her bad drinking habits had been due to being young and stupid, but after that drink, her life unravelled almost immediately, and it took her 10 years to get sober again. Her drinking took a particularly dark turn after her father died of alcoholism. Abbie is now over 1 year sober and she's never been happier. She owes her recovery to an amazing charity called Music Support who help people working in the music and live events industry. https://www.instagram.com/abbiefluteswww.abigailburrows.comMusic Support is a registered charity that helps anyone who works in the UK music industry experiencing substance use, addiction and/or mental health challenges. Find out more about their work at www.musicsupport.org. The charity is hosting “Understanding Addiction and Embracing Recovery: The Classical Edition,” a webinar in partnership with the Royal Society of Musicians on Blue Monday, 20th January, from 6pm – 730pm. It will feature Abbie and Music Support Trustee and cellist, Rachael Lander (a previous guest on my podcast). Happy New Year and welcome back to One For The Road. We are kicking off 2025 with Donna Francis who is an award-winning British Beauty Editor living in Florida with her family. Growing up in Islington, North London, Donna's happiest memories were at her family friends' pub, where she would celebrate new year's eve and birthdays. She wasn't a heavy drinker in her teens or twenties, but continued the family tradition of making sure everyone's 'glass was full' - it was how she expressed her love. Drinking became a problem during perimenopause which hit during the pandemic. The stresses of family issues and freelance life encouraged Donna to drink more, even though she knew that couldn't tolerate it. After experiencing too many intoxicated nights that finished with vomiting and blackouts she had enough. Donna is now 6 months sober and loves sharing her sober stories and advice to her community on social media.https://www.instagram.com/thebeautyed/?hl=enhttps://www.tiktok.com/@thebeautyed?lang=enhttps://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/smiling-gives-you-wrinkles/id1725957283If you want to connect with me via Instagram, you can find me on the instahandle @Soberdave https://www.instagram.com/soberdave/or via my website https://davidwilsoncoaching.com/Provided below are links for services offering additional help and advice.www.drinkaware.co.uk/advice/alcohol-support-serviceshttps://nacoa.org.uk/Show producer- Daniella Attanasio-MartinezInstagram - @TheDaniellaMartinezhttps://www.instagram.com/thedaniellamartinez/www.instagram.com/grownuphustle Hosted on Acast. Several years ago I started listening to your Irish and Celtic Music Podcast. I liked it a lot because of all the independent music. But sometimes it was a bit too independent according to my taste. I forgot to listen regularly and it got out of sight and mind. In the meantime I started working (volunteering) at a small regional broadcasting company in my hometown of Winsum. I got the possibility to make my own programmes and one of them I titled " Highlands and Islands" a reference to Scotland of course, but also a reference to the region where I live (het Hogeland  -  Highland) and the Waddensea with small islands. Due to illness I was not able to make the show in our radiostudio, but my homestudio was good enough to make broadcastings. I started broadcasting at Mixcloud and posted my recordings there. Looking for music I discovered your Irish and Celtic Music Podcast at Mixcloud. Nice surprise! Started listening again. Thought it would be nice to reach out to you. Want to make my compliments for your shows and your perseverance in making them. Way back you were in the 100 - 200 range; now almost 700!! I promoted your show to my small group of listeners (Celtic Folk is not that big in the Netherlands) and will do so in the future. Keep up the good work! Kind regards,"

On this weeks epsiode of One For The Road i am joined by Will Gordon and below he shares his story.Hey there, I'm Will, I grew up in the suburbs of Boston, youngest of four brothers in a pretty normal family. We were all athletic and fiercely competitive, which shaped a lot of who I am today. But beneath that seemingly perfect exterior, I was fighting a battle that started way too early. At just 14, I found myself grappling with crippling anxiety and an overwhelming desire to fit in. That's when I first turned to alcohol. It became my crutch, my liquid courage that allowed me to express the person I wanted to be without the overthinking that came with being sober. Little did I know, this "solution" would nearly cost me everything. As the years went by, my drinking got worse and worse. I lost all my close friends, my job, and my life was spiraling out of control. It all came to a head when doctors gave me the ultimate wake-up call: I had just two weeks left to live.In what I can only describe as a miracle, I received a life-saving liver and kidney transplant. Followed by what felt like endless medical complications. When I woke up, I made a solemn vow to my wife and myself – alcohol would never again control my life. But here's the thing: just because my body got fixed doesn't mean my brain and soul were magically healed. The pull to drink is all-encompassing, and staying sober is a daily practice. That's why I've dedicated my life to sharing my story and helping others avoid the same pitfalls. Now that you've seen my episode, I enthusiastically encourage you to follow my brand new YouTube channel "TheWillpowerPodcast," I'm opening up about my ongoing journey. I share the mindfulness routines, healthy habits, and goal-setting strategies that help me maintain my sobriety every single day. On this weeks episode of One For The Road i am joined by Phil Briggs who is a 54 year old make-up artist living in London who stopped drinking alcohol in April 2024. Phil was born and raised in Liverpool during the 70s and 80s and moved to live amongst the bright lights of London when he was 21 years old. Phil, like many, discovered alcohol at a young age of 15 and it soon became part of all social life both in Liverpool and following the move to London. He remembers being frequently drunk from the age of 16 when he left school and began working for a large bank. Socialising with the Liverpool banking colleagues whilst at the same time regularly having nights out on Liverpool's gay scene, alcohol featured heavily several times per week. This continued following the move to London with new banking colleagues and a busy London gay nightlife. Social drinking continued for many years and in his 30s, Phil found drinking wine with meals indoors became an additional regular time to imbibe. In 2012, Phil was hit with a series of life-changing events including job loss, divorce, financial difficulties and bereavement. While not directly responsible for these incidents, alcohol, which had previously been reserved for socialising and enjoying with a meal, became the go to coping mechanism for difficult life events. By the time the pandemic hit in 2020, Phil was already drinking every night in increasing amounts and being alone during the pandemic it escalated to whole new levels of drinking. When a very close friend of 30 years died of Covid, Phil found dealing with the grief without being able to see anyone else, cemented very heavy, nightly drinking in place. Phil knew something had to change and after months of procrastination decided on a three month break from alcohol which turned into a realisation that the only option for him was to stop completely. It hasn't been a simple path, with extra health problems coming to the surface and dealing with living alone where most of the heavy drinking had taken place. But research on the subject and connection with others going through the same has enabled Phil to remain alcohol free. Phil now uses his make-up skills to help those with skin conditions which cause them a loss of confidence, to use specialist skin creams to cover the conditions. Now, more than six months alcohol free, he is beginning to notice subtle but vital changes in his life and for the first time in many years is very excited about the future and finding out what he is capable of.Phil's websites:www.camouflageconsultations.comwww.philbriggsmakeup.comIf you want to connect with me via Instagram, you can find me on the instahandle @Soberdave https://www.instagram.com/soberdave/or via my website https://davidwilsoncoaching.com/Provided below are links for services offering additional help and advice.www.drinkaware.co.uk/advice/alcohol-support-serviceshttps://nacoa.org.uk/Show producer- Daniella Attanasio-MartinezInstagram - @TheDaniellaMartinezhttps://www.instagram.com/thedaniellamartinez/www.instagram.com/grownuphustle Hosted on Acast. Im joined on One For The Road this week by Barbara Williams who ditched alcohol in February 2021.She grew up in the UK in the university city of Cambridge, with her parents and four sisters. Remembering that alcohol was mostly used happily at family celebrations. Barbara remembers thinking ‘I can't wait to go out, like my older sisters', who were going out at the weekends dancing enjoying themselves. The first time she was drunk was at 14 years old, throwing up in the street, blacking out and feeling embarrassed, being out of control drunk was not part of her teens after that incident. She recalls going to pubs in the 80s without ID ordering a malibu and coke and cycling to the pub every Friday with friends for the pub disco. After becoming a young mum shifting Barbara's priorities meant that alcohol wasn't prevalent during the rest of her teens. Barbara found the rave scene in the 90s, followed by noughties ‘Sex and the City' and ‘Ladette' culture where her drinking consumption increased from going out at the weekend binge drink to drinking at home during the week. Barbara sprinkles sober inspiration sharing her colourful posts and stories on IG @sober_in_colour She is soon to be launching a Facebook group exclusive to women of colour www.facebook.com/groups/soberincolourViva Coaching with Barbara, where she is helping people who have already made the decision to quit alcohol or are thinking about it https://vivacoaching.co.uk/bookings/https://www.instagram.com/sober_in_colour/ If you want to connect with me via Instagram, you can find me on the instahandle @Soberdave https://www.instagram.com/soberdave/or via my website https://davidwilsoncoaching.com/Provided below are links for services offering additional help and advice.www.drinkaware.co.uk/advice/alcohol-support-serviceshttps://nacoa.org.uk/Show producer- Daniella Attanasio-MartinezInstagram - @TheDaniellaMartinezhttps://www.instagram.com/thedaniellamartinez/www.instagram.com/grownuphustle Hosted on Acast. One For Road is Stephen King's short story sequel to 'Salem's Lot in which a family man runs out of gas in the middle of a snowstorm, leaves his family in the car while he goes to look for help, and then wanders into a bar where the locals pretty much tell him he broke down in the wrong place and there are vampires around. Scary, tense, and with a final couple of pages that will stick with you long after reading.

I'm celebrating the early part of St. Patrick's month by volunteering in the Iditarod race in Alaska. I'll be singing Celtic tunes while taking care of the huskies running for 1,049 frozen miles from Anchorage to Nome. I have dual citizenship with the Republic, as my grandparents immigrated from Roscommon, Dublin, and Limerick. Perhaps I can start a sled - dog team representing the Republic somewhere in the future. Best wishes," Ben Doran replied to my feedback request: "Hello Marc; The weather here in Wisconsin today definitely inspires kilt wear. And weather/whether or not it is nearly this nice on St. Patrick's Day weekend, I'll be kilting it up. And singing with the band Ar Ais Aris (a - rash a - reesh)("Back Again") on Saturday in Berwyn, Il; then Sunday, to Galena, Il; then finish up with our two usual gigs for retirement communities in Rockton, Il and Beloit, WI on Monday. I will (yep) probably color my beard in orange and green for Monday. I think among the many new sounds/new music that I've heard from your podcasts, it would be the band, Larkin, that has my fancy (this week, anyway). No, I don't consider myself fickle, just distracted.  Slainte, Marc!!" woodland folk emailed a photo: "heading to the wood for a fire and a practice, can listen then my friend... Attached is a picture,me and another friend who plays a Welsh harp, stopped to play a little on the river brue ...." Nathanael Stottlemyer emailed: "We're losing Good Celtic Music Hi Marc, It was last year that I started listening to your podcast, and like a mad man I started your podcast at the very beginning. I'm now at the year 2016 and I've loved every episode. There is just one problem. When I look up the bands that I loved and that I want to purchase their music, they're gone. There's no website, no Spotify, no YouTube, sometimes I can't even find their CD's used! And it's a shame, because they're good songs and sometimes, take Young Hunting by Serious Kitchen (Which was in your best of the year podcasts more than once) it's the only Celtic rendition of the song on the internet. I managed to buy the last Tig! Album off the internet, but it's looking bad for some of my other favorites. We're losing years of Celtic music, and it's a shame, especially since I know that the members of Serious Kitchen and others are still around. I don't suppose I'm missing a way to buy these albums. I really hope I am. I don't suppose you could use your amazing Celtfather connections and reach out to some of the people of these bands and see if they'd put on Bandcamp? Or perhaps a huge "Best of the Irish and Celtic Music Podcast" album with some of these lost treasures? They're some of the best music I've heard. Thanks, Nathanael"
