David is an English pianist, violinist, composer and arranger. He started playing the violin at age 7 and he's composed hundreds of works from small piano pieces to full-length operas. Violinist Katie Thomas is a soloist, chamber musician, studio violinist and concert-mistress. She's played on Grammy winning albums and also recorded with artists like Rosanne Cash, The O'Jays, Jimmy Fallon and the animation series “Dragons”. Violinist Erica Dicker works in a wide variety of musical settings in both notated and improvised music. She is a member of the electro-acoustic trio Vaster Than Empires. She is also a founding member of the horn-trio Kylwyria. And she's known for her work with composer and multi-instrumentalist Anthony Braxton.J.J. Johnson has been the violist at Radio City Music Hall. Nous sommes en 1937. C'est d'abord en feuilleton, dans la revue hebdomadaire « Regards », que paraît un roman intitulé « La Guerre des mouches ». Son auteur Jacques Spitz, proche des milieux scientifiques, est né dans l'Algérie de l'époque coloniale française. L'histoire raconte l'apparition d'une nouvelle espèce de mouches en Indochine, à la fin des années 1930. Ayant acquis une forme d'intelligence nouvelle, à la faveur d'une mutation génétique, ces mouches s'attaquent aux populations humaines et causent de terribles ravages. Profitant de l'irresponsabilité et de l'égoïsme des nations, les insectes parviennent à envahir toute l'Asie et l'Afrique du Nord, avant de fondre sur l'Europe qui va tenter, bien tardivement, de lutter pour la survie de l'humanité. Jacques Spitz écrit : « Ainsi, après avoir rempli l'air de ses cris, l'espace de ses inventions, les bibliothèques de ses spéculations et l'avenir de ses espoirs, l'humanité disparut sans laisser plus de traces qu'un oiseau dans le soir. Simplement, un jour, il n'y eut plus personne sur les routes du monde. Le spectre de la connaissance était passé des mains de l'espèce humaine aux pattes de l'espèce mouche. ». Le XXe siècle en a vu d'autres, les Deux Guerres mondiales n'étant pas des moindres. Et le premier quart du XXIe n'est pas avare en mauvaises nouvelles. L'empathie suppose d'accepter qu'on est dans une position privilégiée et donc de domination.Docteure en neurosciences, Samah Karaki est aussi l'autrice d'un livre qui a beaucoup fait parler ces derniers mois, L'empathie est politique, un bijou de pensée critique. Elle y entremêle sciences dures et sciences humaines, et y décrit les mécanismes à l'oeuvre lorsque l'on parle d'empathie, comme par exemple le favoritisme endogame - le fait d'être plus touché·e par ce que vivent celleux qui nous ressemblent.Au micro de Lauren Bastide, elle revient sur son enfance, en partie au Liban, à Beyrouth. Elle ne rêvait pas de faire de la biologie avant de se retrouver lors d'un stage pendant ses études à étudier la mémoire des oiseaux - elle est depuis devenue docteure et a fondé le Social Brain Institue, institution visant à vulgariser ce sujet. Elle évoque aussi la situation des femmes palestiniennes, et l'empathie à double standard qui touche les enfants. Finalement elle arrive à la conclusion glaçante que nous sommes fondamentalement seul·es. Mais cette solitude ne serait-elle pas la clé de l'ouverture aux autres ?
