In this episode of the Previously On Podcast, Jillian's joined by her husband Tyler to break down School Spirits Season 3 Episode 6, “Children of the Scorned”.From ghost hookups in the auto shop to a terrifying corn maze chase, this episode gave us horror, heart, and some major lore reveals. We're counting down our Top 5 “Girl, don't…” moments (including: "girl, don't run into a corn maze alone" and "girl, don't keep mind-melding in that hell hole.")Plus, we dive into Maddie and Xavier coming face-to-face with KC Jensen (aka Alfred Van Heidt), Simon mind-melding with White Eyes (maybe too much?!), and poor Kyle learns he's been body-snatched for 20 years. Just another day in Split River! Then we're theorizing everything as we head into episode 7! Where did Simon end up and does he have more of a connection with White Eyes? Is lightning the key to thinning the veil? Did Alfred Van Heidt jump into yet another body? And why is Ralph translucent? If you're watching School Spirits on Paramount+ and need a recap, breakdown, and some wild theories, this one's for you!00:00 Intro to pod01:31 "Children of the Scorned"03:00 Episode 6 Recap04:42 Thoughts on ep 810:00 Top 5 "Girl, don't..."10:34 Maddie and Wally ghost hook up12:19 Rhonda and the puddle14:29 Dr. Hunter-Price and Livia18:52 Simon and White Eyes24:18 Maddie chases KC Jensen in corn maze32:35 Nurse Calvert34:24 THEORIES34:29 River's Mouth Dairy35:22 Mazes and scars37:03 The ring is AVH key37:49 AVH body swapped before40:24 Puddle portal43:00 Simon-White Eyes connection43:54 Simon forgetting44:54 Ralph is see-thru48:38 Maddie accused of murder?49:45 Livia has Maddie evidence50:45 Xavier hospital access52:09 Maddie visionsCheck out our shot-by-shot comparison of School Spirits and Carrie (1976): https://www.instagram.com/p/DUO1IT5AVnS/Thank you to Matt Buechele (@mattbooshell) for creating our new theme song. The real beginning of our divergence from Out Of The Abyss, a misplaced maze and a myserious voice... We present ARCHIVE! A companion series where Nikoli & Amy sit down and discuss the DM notes for each episode of Abyss as it happens. This will include recaps of the previous Abyss episode, Nikoli's outline for the next episode and some details of how this compares to what the source material originally planned. Hopefully Archive will satisfy the "behind the scenes" cravings we know some fans have for our DM notes and reasoning behind what we changed and why. Originally, only one episode of Archive was on Libsyn, with the rest released each week to our $3+ Patreon supporters. If you enjoy it, consider joining our Patreon!
Dr Tanya Latty is an insect scientist with a quirky taste in pets, and a keen eye for detail, but it's the lessons from her brainless pet slime mould that she's most fascinated about.Tanya studies the behaviour of ants and bees and she's particularly interested in their ability to work effectively as a team to achieve a common goal. But her pet project is focused on a creature that defies classification.Slime moulds are neither plants nor animals. They can move, but they don't have legs or wings. They appear to make complex decisions, often motivated by the promise of food. Yet they don't have a stomach or a brain.Despite slime moulds' unique biology, Tanya was struck by their apparent intelligence and by similarities in their patterns of behaviour to ants and bees.Tanya believes the knowledge gained from studying the behaviour of slime moulds and insects could help to solve complex organisational problems in the human world. For more information on Dr Latty's research head to the Invertebrate behaviour and ecology lab website. This episode of Conversations was produced by Sinead Lee, the Executive Producer was Carmel Rooney. It explores strange science, weird science, hives, bees, insect behaviour, single cell organisms, biology, science for kids, podcasts for kids, the blob, flubber. To binge even more great episodes of the Conversations podcast with Richard Fidler and Sarah Kanowski go the ABC listen app (Australia) or wherever you get your podcasts. Send us a text In this episode, Dylan J. Schlender (from Reels of Justice) joins the podcast. He brings along the movie Mixed Nuts. Marty and Clif give Dylan the movie Mazes and Monsters to watch. Clif and Marty return with special guest Dylan for a completely unhinged holiday double-feature: Mixed Nuts (1994) starring Steve Martin, and Mazes and Monsters (1982) starring a very young Tom Hanks. The trio digs into why Mixed Nuts, with its massive ensemble cast, still feels chaotic and uneven, why the French original didn't translate, and how the movie became one of the oddest entries in 90s holiday cinema. Then they turn to Mazes and Monsters, the infamous TV movie inspired by Dungeons & Dragons panic, filled with LARPing, melodrama and lots of spelunking.#TalkingPondo #MoviePodcast #MixedNuts #MazesAndMonsters #TomHanks #SteveMartin #ChristmasMovies #HolidayMovies #FilmDiscussion #PodcastEpisode #MovieReview #ComedyPodcast #DungeonsAndDragons #FiggyEpisode #IndieFilmmakers #CultMovies #YouTubePodcast #FilmNerds #MovieTalk #CinemaDiscussionSupport the showFind our films here: The Love Song of William H Shaw Revenge of Zoe Writing Fren-ZeeMaking Pondo on Facebookhttps://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100087139659233X (formerly Twitter):@MakingPondoInstagram:https://www.instagram.com/makingpondo/Making Pondo on Letterboxd:Season Onehttps://letterboxd.com/marty_ketola/list/talking-pondo/Season Twohttps://letterboxd.com/marty_ketola/list/talking-pondo-season-2/Season Threehttps://letterboxd.com/marty_ketola/list/talking-pondo-season-3/ Theme Song "The Rain" by Russ PacePhotos by Geoffrey Notkin

This week we're joined by Tyler Hyde from the podcast That's Spooky to discuss the made-for-tv scare film, Mazes & Monsters. The film represents the first lead role for future superstar, Tom Hanks in a movie about the dangers of playing Dungeons and Dragons. No, I'm not making that up.In the early 1980's as Dungeons and Dragons became a sensation of tabletops everywhere, it didn't take long for scolding parent groups to cry foul to every media outlet that would listen and raise a moral panic that rose in tandem with the moral panics around heavy metal music and horror movies. The disappearance of and tragic suicide of James Dallas Egbert III thrust D&D into the headlines and craven opportunists and sensational headlines ignored all the factors that drove him to suicide and placed the blame squarely at D&D, the one thing in his life that brought him joy and provided an escape from the pressures of being a child prodigy. His story informed Rona Jaffe's book, Mazes and Monsters, which led to the rapid development of this TV movie also starring Chris Makepeace and Wendy Crewson. The story concerns four friends at university who play Mazes and Monsters, the legally distinct dungeon crawler role playing game that causes one player to lose his shit and fall into a psychotic delirium which leads him to murder, madness, and suicide. It is, without question, one of the most toxic movies we've ever seen with a message that seems to be: under no circumstances are you to use your imaginations. You should be thinking about a sensible career now. It's a real bummer, you guys.Join the Bring Me The Axe Discord: https://discord.gg/snkxuxzJSupport Bring Me The Axe! on Patreon:https://patreon.com/bringmetheaxepodBuy Bring Me The Axe merch here:https://www.bonfire.com/store/bring-me-the-axe-podcast/

Over the past decades, neuroscience has blossomed, positioning itself as a kind of master discipline over everything else. For who understands the brain surely understands all of human activity and creation? Or not?Neuroscience's reach has extended past its scientific remit and into the world of philosophy and its major questions. What is a human? What is consciousness? Are we free? And so on. Yet its utility in this field, and in general, is still being fiercely debated, with its proponents and detractors arguing on the one side that it is the key to the universe, and on the other that it is a bunch of garbage.Join this engaging conversation from 2011 where Iain McGilchrist, famous psychologist and researcher of the brain, the late neuroscientist and neurobiologist Colin Blakemore, and journalist Bryan Appleyard delve into the nitty-gritty of neuroscience and what it has to say on major philosophical questions. Odds and Ends: Avoiding the horror of social interaction at high school reunionsFeature Film: We're closing out our month of horror with the odd anti-Dungeons and Dragons movie, Mazes and Monsters (get it?). Probably most notable for being featuring the first starring role of one Thomas Jeffrey Hanks, this movie takes a tragic real-life story that had nothing to do with DnD and makes it all about DnD to demonize a friendly game and minimize teenage depression. So it should be a fun time!Next week's movie: Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)You can join the conversation Wednesdays at 7pm EST! Send us a textIt's weird just how much of my life can be traced through television. As much time as I spent as a kid riding my bike down the gravel roads to friends houses and playing in the woods, I spent at least that much time watching TV. From the early years of Sunday Morning Cartoons and The Wonderful World of Disney to my teenage years, cruising North Park in Evansville Indiana and going to the movie theater every Friday and Saturday night. I guess it's no surprise that I can remember the first time I watched a movie about Dungeons and Dragons. It was Christmas Break, no school, Rainy but mild weather and based on the newspaper it looked like CBS was going to have a movie about roleplaying. This was going to be pretty cool. I was into roleplaying, but didn't get a chance to play much. For some reason nobody wanted to talk about roleplaying and if you ever brought it up you got funny looks. I was really looking forward to it.It was called Mazes and Monsters and it stared that funny guy from Bosum Buddies…That was a great show.I remember settling in with Orvil Redenbacher Popcorn. And Wow, that didn't go the way I thought it would. For you younger folks out there, roleplaying is cool. ComiCon draws in well over 100,000 people, all dressed up in crazy costumes. GenCon brings in over 70,000 people and that's a convention designed for roleplayers and gamers.Being a roleplayer is cool. Movie stars talk about doing it. Rock Stars play D&D. Jocks at your school play D&D. I mean it blows my mind.Growing up in the 70's and 80's if you played D&D you were a Satan worshiper.Mike and I lived through those days and on this episode, we are going to talk about the Satanic Panic, walk you through some of the low points and generally make you all realize that you don't know how good you got it.Mike, did you watch Mazes and Monsters?
Odds and Ends: Nothing to see here, folks, move along...Feature Film: We're talking about a classic from one of the masters of horror, that being Scream and them being Wes Craven. In the spirit of his new book, Matt joins us as we talk about the 1980s panic over Dungeons & Dragons, specifically the one-woman moral crusade of Patricia "Pat" Pulling and Bothered About Dungeons & Dragons. However, to talk about that, we need to cover the wild 1979 disappearance of James Dallas Egbert III, the first major moral panic over D&D.Content Warning: Discussion of mental health struggles, substance misuse, suicidal ideation, and suicide. Fall is coming and to go along with the pumpkins, spiced lattes, and changing leaves, we also have corn Mazes. And a special one in Lodi is paying homage to the state we call home. Ben Jarboe talks to Angie Treinen an owner of the Treinen Farm Corn Maze. So why is Wisconsin the focus of this year's maze and what does it take to encapsulate the details? She says this maze is on 15 acres of land and over their 25 years of making corn mazes, they have learned what people like and don't like and continue to incorporate that.Cooler temps are on the way for the weekend. Stu Muck says it may be a little bit of a surprise at this stage of August to feel temps in the 60's, but that's what he expects for the weekend. The Ribbon is cut and now the Lafayette Hospital & Clinic in Darlington is ready to serve rural Wisconsin. The new state of the art hospital opened its doors officially on Thursday and Ben Jarboe spoke with the chairman of the county board, as well as the chair of the hospital committee. Jack Sauer says it's probably one of the proudest moments in his 24 years of public service. The project began in 2023, and features 84,000 square feet of space dedicated to quality health care for rural Wisconsin and the entire region. Sauer's proud not only of the financial collaboration that made the project a success, but the creativity they deployed to staff it. Sauer says they're offering up to $50,000 in stipends to offset the cost of education to entice and keep doctors at the hospital. July milk production was as big as expected. The 24 major dairy producing states brought a 3.5% increase in July milk to the market. Wisconsin's production was up less than 1%, but California, South Dakota, Texas and Michigan were just a few states with over 3% increase in milk. The Pro Farmer Crop tour concluded Thursday night in Rochester, Minnesota. While the full report will be released later today, many crop scouts on the tour said that despite the big yield projections, you can't lose sight of the disease risk. Emily Carolan is one of the scouts that measured through Western Iowa and Southern Minnesota. She says Sudden Death Syndrome(SDS) could take a toll on soybean yields. A little competition can keep you sharp! What if that competition is your spouse? A little good natured competition has inspired husband/wife team, Emily and Dan Sleik of Berlin, to be part of the 2025 Wisconsin Soybean Yield Contest. Pam Jahnke chats with the two about why they got started in the event and what they've learned along the way. Emily says their real goal is to replicate results and see how they benchmark against other farms in the state. The entry deadline to participate in this year's WI Soybean Yield Contest is August 31st.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Can you find your way out of the maize? The corn maze has become an enduring attraction of the American autumnal experience, seen at touristy family farms next to pumpkin patches and haunted houses. But what are the historical roots of this iconic living puzzle? Jack Cooper is one of those musicians you follow no matter the artistic anatomy of the individual's journey into the universally unknown. His atmospheric approach is organic and built on the brilliance of his peers, while bravely bridging the gap between the contagious contents of the 1980s and 1990s soundscapes. From his time in Mazes, The Beep Seals, and everything he eagerly evaulated, and put all his poetic power into his latest outfit, Modern Nature. On this episode of The Self Portrait Gospel Podcast, we speak to Cooper about his rural upbringing in the UK, the influences of bands such as Oasis, The Smiths, The Stone Roses, to name a few, the critical conditions of the world, and our place in it, and eventually forming Modern Nature. Releasing a series of titles on Bella Union, Cooper has returned to the sonic stratosphere with perhaps the band's most epic effort yet, "The Heat Warps."

What do you get when you mix a disappearing god, a multiverse glitch, and a talking squirrel? Apparently, therapy. Show Notes: In this second helping of the Ash Ely Planescape Postmortem, the hosts dissect the juicy narrative meat of a campaign marinated in memory loss, Mind Flayers, and metaphysical trauma. From the desperate hunt for Orochalcum to the chaos of battling Cathraxus (yes, that Cathraxus), our hosts recount the highs, lows, and emotional collateral damage of storytelling across the planes. The episode dives deep into the decisions that shaped the campaign—like letting players talk to their other selves (always a great idea until it's not), negotiating with shady NPCs who definitely read the fine print, and exploring the emotional weight of being a dwarven sister with unresolved issues. Featuring Rattatosk mischief, back-alley conspiracies, a glitch in the multiverse, and the Lady of Pain pulling the ultimate disappearing act, this episode will remind you that sometimes the best part of tabletop games is just how weird, poignant, and gloriously off-rails they can get. Today I have a great first time guest who is a Professor of the History of science and author of several books including her just released "The Instability of Truth: Brainwashing, Mind Control, and Hyper-Persuasion" Dr Rebecca Lemov Areas of Research: Science & Technology Studies, Technology & Society, Media Studies, Human Sciences Rebecca Lemov's research focuses on key episodes and experiments in the history of the human and behavioral sciences. Her forthcoming book, The Instability of Truth: Brainwashing, Mind Control, and Hyperpersuasion uncovers the history of brainwashing—and its troubling implications for today. Because brainwashing affects both the world and our observation of the world, we often cannot recognize it while it is happening—unless we know where to look. In The Instability of Truth, Lemov exposes the myriad ways our minds can be controlled against our will, exploring the history of brainwashing techniques from those employed against North Korean POWs, to unwanted brain implants at a U.S. military hospital, to the “soft” brainwashing of social media doomscrolling and behavior-shaping. The new work reveals that anyone can fall under the spell of mind control, especially in our increasingly data-driven world. Identifying invasive forms of emotional engineering that exploit trauma and addiction, creating coercion and persuasion in everyday life, Lemov offers lessons learned from past mind-control episodes to equip us for the increasing challenges we face from social media, AI, and an unprecedented, global form of surveillance capitalism. Her other books include Database of Dreams: The Lost Quest to Catalog Humanity (how scientists between 1942 and 1963 attempted to map the elusive and subjective parts of the human psyche via once-futuristic data-storage techniques), and World As Laboratory: Experiments with Mice, Mazes, and Men (about the scientific dream of behavioral engineering). She is a co-author of How Reason Almost Lost its Mind: The Strange Career of Cold War Rationality. Rebecca teaches courses on the history and future of big data; animal studies; human experiments; and technologies of mind control, as well as the history of the social and human sciences more broadly. A Visiting Scholar at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin in 2010-11, and again in 2013-14, she took part in two working groups there, on the Sciences of the Archive and Historicizing Big Data. Her doctoral work was at U.C. Berkeley in Anthropology and she graduated from Yale University where she studied English literature. Why is making a decision sometimes the hardest thing in the world? For those with ADHD, the labyrinth of choices can feel impossibly complex. Each twist and turn demands attention and energy—resources that are already stretched thin. This week Nikki and Pete peel back the layers of decision-making through the ADHD lens, unraveling why such a seemingly simple act can feel like scaling a mountain. At the heart of it lies one of ADHD's most challenging riddles: the executive functions. These are the mental tools we use to plan, prioritize, organize, and remember, but for those with ADHD, these tools often feel dull or misplaced. Enter the paradox of choice. Too many options? Paralysis. Too much time? Overthinking. Too little time? Impulsivity. Each scenario is riddled with traps.Decision-making with ADHD is an art, not a science. It's messy, it's nonlinear, and it requires flexibility and self-compassion. Join Nikki and Pete as they navigate this intricate process, offering insights, stories, and strategies to help you make decisions that feel right—without the second-guessing, the self-doubt, or the endless spiral of overthinking.Links & NotesSupport the Show on PatreonDig into the podcast Shownotes Database (00:00) - Welcome to Taking Control: The ADHD Podcast (01:42) - Become a Patron • Support the Show! It's been a minute since the sisters and Momma Ashley have sat down for happy hour to chat food, drinks and entertaining. But there's no time like the present season to discuss the sisters annual respective Halloween extravaganzas and Momma Ashley's part in all of it! Whitney kicks things off with her mullet-wearing, Texas tuxedo prom-inspired costume that had everyone talking. Courtney, always the hostess with the mostess, shares how she's catering a 195-person kid's Halloween bash this year, from turkey chili to brisket tacos—because sometimes, even the queens of homemade need a little help! Momma Ashley offers a trip down memory lane, recounting the Ashley family's Halloween parties of yesteryear, complete with flasher costumes and haunted house mazes made from refrigerator boxes. But the episode doesn't stop at party planning and costumes—it's all about the food too! The ladies swap recipes for the ultimate Halloween snacks, including Whitney's Italian beef sandwiches, a kale and lentil salad that's surprisingly simple, and of course, Momma Ashley's famous brownies. If you're into a little sweet heat, don't miss the jalapeño brownies that have Whitney's friends sneaking stashing them from their family in secret hiding places. Plus, with talk of new seasonal twists like pumpkin spice and peppermint cream cheese fillings, this episode is full of mouth-watering ideas for your holiday table. As always, the Ashley's bring the banter, the memories, and the unfiltered fun.
