When you listen to the steps they took to reconcile their marriage, you can apply that to yours to strengthen it. Your marriage does not have to be in disrepair to benefit from their story. With the demands of parenting, time spent connecting with your spouse can easily be moved to the back-burner. It's a slow progression of choices and unintended consequences of decisions made. You intend to have that conversation with your husband, but with the caseworker coming over for a home visit today, it gets pushed lower on the priority list. Interruptions bring a change in plans, and suddenly, you haven't been able to have a date night in months. In our foster parenting journey, and now, raising a big family, I know my time with my husband, Clint, is so valuable. I am so thankful for our time together when it comes every other Tuesday night, but early on, I wasn't as good at protecting that time on the calendar. I allowed it to be moved, thinking we could make it up at some other time and then another week would pass without an intentional time to connect. I recently talked with Jill Savage about this, and why it's actually good for our children for us to invest in our marriages.

Valentine's Day is right around the corner and we get to talk about love! Not the fairy tale kind where all your dreams come true, but the kind that takes hard work, intentionality, and selflessness. If you are single or dating, please don't let the title of the message deter you. Brenda is going to share five principles of loving others that you can implement into any relationship. There is a lot out there about relationships, but we're going to take a look at what the Bible has to say. "A new command I give you: Love one another." John 13:34 This beautifully simple command is easier said than lived out, right?! How do two sinful, selfish people pursue love when life gets busy, stressful, and you are barely keeping your head above water with the kids, schedules, work, etc. You may have read books, attended retreats, and equipped yourself for a "loving" marriage, only to find you and your spouse arguing and discontent. Theoretically you should have the perfect marriage, but it really comes down to simply loving your spouse and here's how: Be FOR your spouse - Be on the same team as your spouse/Be "TEAM YOUR FAMILY" Grow your relationship with Jesus Christ Establish Healthy Boundaries Give Grace rather than Criticizing If you are in a abusive relationship or if there are serious issues within your relationship, please seek help from a trusted friend, pastor, or counselor. These five principles are to help you become a healthier person for a healthier marriage/relationship. For deeper growth on this topic, check out Brenda's book Balance, Busyness, and Not Doing It All;  the marriage ministry of Mark and Jill Savage; Wives, Stop Parenting Your Husband on FortheFamily.org; Townsend and Cloud's book Boundaries and Boundaries in Marriage or their other resources online at Boundaries.me If you are encouraged by this podcast, please leave a review! We spoke about the topic of coaching and how she runs a business that helps makes coaching accessible to everyone. We discuss both the direct and indirect benefits.  Phoebe is a wife, mother of 3, an ACC certified coach with International Coaching Federation and Founder + CEO of Celebrate You Coaching. Before this, Phoebe graduated with a degree in Child and Adolescent Development and went on to teach elementary grades in California. She has been a program director in both schools and ministries, and she’s been a keynote speaker at dozens of women’s conferences and workshops. She specializes in career and life work, with a passion for empowering those in the margins. Her current role as CEO of CYC has afforded her the opportunity to lead while still having her boots on the ground. A career coach herself, Phoebe leads CYC’s massive moments while also carrying a caseload of clients herself. In this episode, we talk about how motherhood became the catalyst for her to transition from teaching to coaching. She helps to clarify what is coaching and what it isn’t and the unique benefits of coaching. She also speaks about the importance of friends’ presence, for helping us to de-stress. We packed a lot in this episode, so make sure you listen to the entire episode to get all of the pearls of wisdom.   Links mentioned in the episode: Howard Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligence. Parenting adult kids is NOT easy.  Empty nest parents are constantly faced with choices of what to say and what not to say to the “adults” who they have loved and taught from their infancy.  Not to mention that even though those “adults” are of age, that doesn’t mean they have nearly as much life experience and wouldn’t benefit from some sound advice.  However, when these empty nesters innocently insert their opinion into their adult children’s lives, they are often met with insult and frustration.   In todays episode, renowned author Jill Savage shares 6 lessons she has learned to help navigate this new season of parenting.

I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength, which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.”   Ephesians 2:8–10 “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God‘s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.“   Ephesians 2:13 “But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ.“   Philippians 1:6 “being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

I am a planner.  When I am entering a new situation, I like to know what is happening, visualize the outcome and plan for all variables,  So, needless to say when I was pregnant with my first child, I PLANNED. I read numerous parenting books and observed what other parents did (and of course, I told myself I would NEVER make the same mistakes they were making).  Well, it turns out that no matter how much planning AND praying I do, these little humans come with their own personalities and ability to choose. I can’t control all aspects of their lives- DANG IT! So even though I had visions of all my kids being great piano players...some are- some are not. I was sure all my kids would be great athletes...some are, some are not.  I put my kids in singing groups to ensure they would be beautiful singers...NONE of them are. And most importantly I wanted my kids to always be kind and obedient...sometimes they are, and a lot of time they are not. Letting go of the “perfect son or daughter” and my “perfect parenting” that I had in my head can be frustrating and disappointing. In this episode, we talk to Jill Savage.  Jill is the founder of Hearts at Home, a non profit organization that focuses on educating and encouraging moms.  We discuss letting go of that “perfect kid,” ideal and loving our kids for who they are...flaws and all. Here is what we talked about: The difference between striving for excellence and striving for perfection. Setting unrealistic expectations. Indicators/Warning Signs that you are expecting perfection. What is “Perfection Infection” and how to recognize it. The antidote for “perfection infection” Using compassion with your kids. Ways to show more compassion to your kids. Using LOVE to combat perfection. Three steps for “keeping your love on.” Helping your kids to feel accepted. The importance of evaluating what you are trying to change in your children. Acceptance doesn’t mean that you always agree with your child. Perception is being able to perceive the INDIVIDUAL needs of your kids. How to know when it’s time to let your child quit and when they should persevere. How to help kids to see their own unique worth. Mom Squad Challenge: When you see someone on social media or in person and you start the comparison trap, just say to yourself “she has a backstory I don’t know.”  This will help you to keep proper perspective and to pursue conversations you might not have had otherwise.

Simply Joyful Podcast with Kristi Clover | Encouragement for your Faith and Family

Welcome to the Simply Joyful PodcastEpisode #011 with Lisa-Jo Baker The Power of FriendshipShow Notes: KristiClover.com/011   Have you ever felt FOMO? That’s the Fear Of Missing Out. And in this day and age of social media, it not only makes friendships between women difficult...it can make them feel downright impossible. Even if you’re not on social media you can experience FOMO when you hear about friends getting together for playdates or coffee without you. That fear of being left can easily set in. FOMO is real!  Friendships can be difficult for a variety of reasons. We as women compare ourselves to each other and feel like we fall short. Many of us carry baggage and hurts from friendships that went wrong. I share in this episode about a little “friendship PTSD” I experienced when I was hurt deeply by a friend. It made me want to pull back from friendships entirely, rather than put myself at risk of experiencing that pain again. I still second guess myself constantly years after this happened. I’m always worried that something I’ve said might be taken the wrong way.    Well, my guest today, Lisa-Jo Baker, knows a thing or two about friendships between women. For the past 7 years, she has served as community manager for Incourage, a website devoted to encouraging women in their everyday stories of faith. Lisa-Jo shares with us from her brand new book, Never Unfriended: ///. She made me giggle when she described her stage of life as the “wonder years” since the kids can now get up, get dressed, and go to the bathroom by themselves…oh what a wonder that is!   On a “Simply” & “Joyful” side note… Lisa-Jo’s shares her biggest tip for keeping things simple, and what she requires of her kids to keep their evenings both simple and joyful.   ** Go to: https://kristiclover.com/freedownload to get a 30 day free trial of Audible — complete with a credit for a free audiobook download. **     In This Episode I so thoroughly enjoyed talking with Lisa-Jo in this episode!! We discussed how we as women thwart friendships, how we can look to Jesus for the true example of how to be a friend, and how to speak the truth to ourselves when our heart wants so badly to deceive us.  We also talk about the difficulty of developing and maintaining friendships between women, how the internet has affected that, and what we can do about it. Well, you are in for such a treat!! I just know you will be so blessed by my conversation with Lisa-Jo! I hope this episode inspires you to develop friendships with women, to encourage them through Christ, and to reach out even when it is difficult.   Highlights from This Show…   *Lisa-Jo talks about friendship PTSD and how it affects our ability to make and maintain friendships.  *Is it possible to invest in friendships in a culture where you can be unfriend someone with a swipe of your finger? “Eve is the original FOMO girl; she’s basically like, ‘Oh my goodness, God has left me out of something.’” — Lisa-Jo Baker   * I reference the first time that I heard the term “FOMO” being here on the podcast with Jill Savage. (Now I hear the term everywhere.) :) *Lisa-Jo talks about how coveting what our neighbors have has exploded with the invention of the internet, when the whole world is now our neighbor. We can be perfectly content with our life, then open Instagram and start scrolling and we aren’t content anymore.  *Lisa-Jo and I laugh about how moms will actually dress up when getting together with other women, yet don’t usually put as much thought into how we dress for the men in our lives. We feel such pressure to maintain appearances for other women.  *Lisa-Jo gives the world’s definition of friendship, “What’s in it for me?”, as opposed to Jesus’ definition of friendship, “What’s in it for you?” Lisa-Jo and I also discuss how Jesus came to be our friend and how He pursues relationships with us.   “It’s about saying to your friend, ‘How could I show up and be a friend to you?’” — Lisa-Jo Baker *Lisa-Jo talks about why it’s important to pursue friendships with others. She also points out how we are hard-wired for relationships by God Himself. Relationships are actually beneficial for us, even if it is hard or we’ve struggled with friendship “failures” in the past.    *I shared with Lisa-Jo about how her story about her mom passing away when she was just a teenager really touched me as I read her book…especially since we had just lost my father-in-law over the summer. The power of friendships during crisis moments like these really touched both of us in our time of grieving.   “It’s okay if it feels awkward...it is better to say the wrong thing than to say nothing.” — Lisa-Jo Baker   *”Friendship is Jesus with skin on. It’s how we bring Him to sit on the sofa next to our friend who’s grieving.” — Lisa-Jo Baker   *Jesus is our Emmanuel and He demonstrates the gift of “presence” in our lives and how we need to show up and be present in the lives of others…especially when friends are going through hard times.  *Lisa-Jo talks about the story of the good Samaritan in Scripture and how Jesus was asked, “WHO is my neighbor?” He taught how to go and BE a good neighbor. He shifts the burden from “What’s in it for me?” to “What’s in it for you?” *Lisa-Jo got very practical in the episode and shared some great tips for women who are ready to reach out and be a friend. She shared an acronym with us from the book: S.T.A.Y.S. {S= Shows up! T= Takes time! A= Assumes the best! Y= Asks “Why?” Friends ask good questions of each other & aren’t afraid of the answers. S= Stops comparing & Starts encouraging} *I mention how I’ve struggled as a people pleaser for most of my life and how I have to fight the lie of the enemy that others don’t like me and may have possibly taken something I’ve said out of context. I share how I try to mediate on Philippians 4 and believe “what is true” of others and not what I “think” they might be thinking. The importance of prayer over situations like these is so important.   “The heart is deceitful above all else…” — Jeremiah 17:9    “Nobody lies to me quite like I do.” — Lisa-Jo Baker   *Lisa-Jo shares a second acronym about the L.I.E.S. we tell ourselves. {L= “Left out” on purpose I = That we’re “invisible” E = That “everything” is about me  S = Skinny jeans friendships! Ha!}   “Friendship is not like skinny jeans; it’s more like sweat pants. It gives everybody room to breathe just the way they are.” — Lisa-Jo Baker   *Lisa-Jo and I talk about how being a good friend to others starts with being a good friend to yourself. Lisa-Jo confesses how she realized that she was constantly speaking negatively to herself and how she’s had to learn to turn off the “devil static.”  *Lisa-Jo discusses how to handle a “friendship break-up.” She also reminds us that even Jesus Himself suffered from failed friendships; think about His relationship with Judas.    “At the end of the day, it is not our job to fix other people; it’s our job to love them.” — Lisa-Jo Baker   “It’s better to have a scar that hurts than an open wound.” — Lisa-Jo Baker   *Lisa-Jo discusses how as moms we have daily opportunities to die to ourselves.  “What I love about Jesus is that He’s never going to get tired of you coming to Him, or asking for validation, or asking Him how you look or how that project went...like NEVER. He’s never tired of that. You can come to Him as much as you want, about everything under the sun...and He will love you. He is fascinated by your life, and He wants to share it with you.” — Lisa-Jo Baker   Books Mentioned…   Never Unfriended   Another Great "Tool" to Mention... Welcome to the Simply Joyful Podcast Episode #006 with Heidi St. John Show Notes: KristiClover.com/006   Biblical Encouragement for Busy Moms   Motherhood is not easy. We all can use encouragement along the way. Well, Heidi St. John is a master encourager! What I love about Heidi is that she’s not afraid to be very real and vulnerable about her “busy” life as a wife, mom of seven, and ministry leader. Heidi’s passion is sharing biblical encouragement — and boy, does she share a lot with us today.    Heidi is a dynamic speaker and has a very popular blog called The Busy Mom. Equally as popular is her podcast, The Busy Mom. You’ll hear more about how Heidi inspired me when I first heard her speak over seven years ago.   On a “Simply” & “Joyful” Note… Heidi has some great advice on how she simplifies…she shares it right after she laughs at me for asking the “busy mom” how she lives more “simply.” Ha! Hey, even busy moms can find ways to simplify their lives…and she has some great advice.   (Warning: This interview was so long that this part is shared in part two. So, make sure you listen in to that episode, too! It will release Monday, February 27th!)   In This Episode: In this episode Heidi and I chat about the struggles facing moms today. We discuss joy stealers like busyness and playing the comparison game. This podcast interview was so awesome…and long…that I split it into two episodes. That’s what happens when you put two chatty people together. What’s really funny is that we chatted for about 15 minutes before we started recording. Just think how long it would have been if I’d started recording that, too. I know you are going to just love this incredibly encouraging episode with Heidi!   Highlights from This Show & Words to Remember: Heidi’s passion is biblical encouragement and turning the hearts of parents back to the Word of God for the direction of their families and for raising their children. I share about my backstory on how Heidi inspired me to start writing and blogging on homeschooling. I mention my insomnia story in this episode. I share all about my 20+ year insomnia story HERE. We talk about busyness — of course! — and the importance of spending time in the Word and our need to consult the Lord!   “If you want to get something done, ask a busy person.” —Heidi St. John   “My version of sane is someone else's version of crazy. It all comes down to what God's called us and equipped us to do." —Heidi St. John   “We get messed up when we get busy doing things that God has not called us to do.” —Heidi St. John   "Women need more time than we give ourselves…to hear the Lord and be still.” —Heidi St. John   The comparison trap is a joy stealer. We also talk about some of the common lies that women listen to — even women in the Bible! (The story of Sarai & Hagar)   “One of the lies that moms fall for is the lie that our kids have to be doing everything.” —Heidi St. John   "It's a game changer when we begin to pray and bring things to the Lord. It makes a total difference in my day when I don't take my stuff before the Lord.” —Heidi St. John   Busyness can interfere with our time with God and can affect generations to come.   "Everyone is working backwards with priorities. (Moms) fill their schedules, which makes their whole lives busy, then they focus on their kids…and maybe on their husbands next. Then God is absolutely last." — Kristi Clover   "Those are the priorities that God lays down in His word. People say, “Where did you come up with that?” I didn't. God came up with it. Don't shoot the messenger!" —Heidi St. John   We also talked about how legalism can push the younger generation away from the Lord.   "Due to legalism, kids are walking away from the Lord, rejecting the faith of their parents because they were raised with rules and not relationships which is a departure from the word of God.” —Heidi St. John   Satan can make himself look small and insignificant so we don’t notice him. (1 Peter 5:8)   “The devil doesn't care what ditch he knocks you into, as long as you are in the ditch.” —Heidi St. John   We referenced my podcast episode with Jill Savage podcast and how “slow fades” in marriage start small and become big. We laughed about Heidi’s recent podcast series on sex that she recorded with her husband, Jay. Heidi references her book "The Busy Mom's Guide to Romance" and God's design for sex. I shared my embarrassing story about when I misread the cover of Bill & Pam Farrell’s Red-Hot Monogamy book. Heidi just did an episode entitled Hot Monogamy on her podcast HERE.   "Marriages couples who are walking with God should have the best sex on the planet.” —Heidi St. John   "God gave sex to you. It wasn't just for procreation. God could have made it as boring as He wanted to. He didn't. He made it amazing. We're the ones who screw it up.” —Heidi St. John   Heidi has a new book coming this fall called Becoming Mom Strong. She shares her inspiration behind the book.   “Motherhood is a refining process. God is trying to teach us something through the process of raising children.” —Heidi St. John   Heidi shares a bit about the physical abuse in her childhood and anxiety that she dealt with. (2 Corinthians 12:9 & Romans 8:28)   “God wants to use those things that were hard in your life.” —Heidi St. John   * We start to talk about how womanhood is under attack… STAY TUNED FOR PART TWO OF THE INTERVIEW TO HEAR MORE!   Books Mentioned: Busy Homeschool Mom's Guide to Daylight by Heidi St. John Busy Homeschool Mom's Guide to Romance by Heidi St. John Red-Hot Monogamy by Bill and Pam Farrell   Scripture Mentioned: -- Genesis 16: The story of Sarai & Hagar -- Judges 6: Gideon did not beseech the Lord   "He will tend his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arms; he will carry them in his bosom and gently lead those that are with young."-- Isaiah 40:11 (ESV)   "Be sober-minded; be watchful. In this episode, I chat with Jill Savage and she shares a lifetime of experiences and struggles - including raising 5 children, facing the challenges of her husband's lifelong depression and an act of infidelity, and her triumph over breast cancer - each which helped her learn to feel with others rather than trying to fix others. Author of 11 books, Jill shares many nuggets of wisdom about building stronger relationships and not comparing our "insides" to other people's "outsides." Jill Savage is known as The Go-To Mom. She is the founder and CEO of Hearts at Home, an organization dedicated to being a moms best place for answers. She is also a popular public speaker and has written eleven books including, Real Moms ... Real Jesus, the best-selling No More Perfect Moms, No More Perfect Kids, and her most recent book authored with her daughter Anne, Better Together. Jill and her husband, Mark, live in Illinois and have five children and three grandchildren. Nuggets of Wisdom from Jill: "We have to stop comparing our insides to other people's outsides." - from Jill's friend "It is recognizing another person's pain. It is not necessarily agreeing with it. It is not giving them pat answers to pull them out of it. It is sitting in the pain with them. So being able to say, 'Wow! That must just feel really dark to you, I am so sorry that it gets hard like this.' That is a validating statement." "He starts feeling like I am distant from him when I try to fix him. But when I try to feel with him, he says that, 'That makes me feel closer..' to him, and that is huge. Me learning to feel over fixing." "Feel, don't fix." "They say people don't care what you know until they know that you care. " "Unfortunately, we just live in a very broken world. I think that the struggle, the pain, the hardship is just a natural byproduct of the human experience." "I am an introvert, and I am refueled by being alone. And so another part of self-care is figuring out ways that I can be alone. " "We cannot be a perfect parent, but we have to stop trying to be perfect and embrace being perfected. That is what God does with the broken places in our life." Some of Jill's Favorite Things: Personal habit: "Self-care is not selfish. Each morning I get up and I take an exercise class. I always also take time to have a little quiet time with the Lord. I perceive all of that as self-care. " Easy meal: Mexican.
