“I do live here and now, but I often think about the past. But then again, I think a lot of people do. So I think writers, what are they going to draw on?”Mark Savage speaks to musician Paul McCartney.Born in Liverpool, England, during the Second World War, he found fame as a member of the legendary British band The Beatles in the 1960s, widely regarded as one of the most influential acts in music history.McCartney shared primary singing and songwriting duties with bandmate John Lennon, and along with George Harrison and Ringo Starr, the four-piece became a global pop music sensation with hits such as Twist and Shout, Yesterday and Hey Jude. They remain one of the best-selling musical acts of all time alongside the likes of Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson.McCartney was knighted for his services to music in 1997, but despite his huge achievements, the 83-year-old seems to be showing no interest in retirement — he's releasing his 19th solo album. The Boys of Dungeon Lane is inspired by his experiences growing up in post-war Liverpool, during which a young McCartney, carrying a guitar and wearing a bowler hat to catch attention, would hitchhike with John Lennon to places as far away as Paris. The way women give birth is changing, according to BBC analysis, which has discovered that one in four births in England are now emergency caesareans. The current figure is 26% - an increase of 8% in the past five years - and the rate of elective caesareans has also gone up. The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists say the system is struggling to cope with this increased level of unplanned surgeries. To discuss what's behind the rise and the potential impact on women, presenter Kylie Pentelow is joined by BBC Health Correspondent Catherine Burns, President of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, Dr Alison Wright, and Helen Cheyne who's a Professor of Maternal and Infant Health Research at the University of Stirling. Hannah Murray was at the height of her fame as an actor in 2016, having found fame as the much-loved Cassie in E4's teen drama Skins, she was now a regular in the HBO fantasy series Game of Thrones as Gilly. But behind the scenes Hannah was struggling with her mental health, and she found herself involved in an organisation which offered courses in magical healing. The following year, Hannah was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. She's since retired from acting and written a memoir about those turbulent times, called The Make-Believe – A Memoir of Magic and Madness. Women's rights charity FiLiA has launched a new national campaign to get Sexual Entertainment Venues, commonly referred to as strip clubs, off the streets. This is informed by new research examining how the venues are viewed and experienced by women living, working and moving nearby. They spoke to more than 700 women across Cardiff, Edinburgh and Manchester, with 55% of women opposed to the venues, and 8% expressing supportive views. Dr Laura Favaro, Director of Research at FiLiA, joins Kylie to discuss their report. The female CEO of dating app Hinge has said that Gen Z "need AI to start conversations on dating apps because they lack the confidence of older generations". Jackie Jantos told the BBC that daters in their 20s are spending less time with other people, compared to two decades ago, has affected their ability to meet and chat in person. To discuss whether AI could help or hinder dating, and the challenges of meeting people IRL, Kylie is joined by author and journalist Olivia Petter and Jessica Evans, founder of events company BODA, which stands for Bored of Dating Apps. And BBC Music correspondent Mark Savage joins us to discuss the breaking news that Kayna King, the entrepreneur and founder of the Mobo awards, has died aged 57 from colon cancer. The Mobo Organisation called her one of the UK music industry's "most fearless champions". Presenter: Kylie Pentelow Producer: Sarah Jane Griffiths

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for April 8, 2026 is: panache • puh-NAHSH • noun In simplest terms, panache refers to lively grace and style; it appears in contexts in which words like verve and flair are also applied. // The cast of the play was excellent—even those playing supporting characters acted with great panache. See the entry > Examples: “The star appeared as an airline pilot, twirling her way through baggage reclaim while shrugging off a bevy of useless men—a surgeon, a priest, a magician, an astronaut. It made absolutely no sense, but she delivered it with such panache that it barely mattered—even when she ended the performance by pulling a dove out of a top hat.” — Mark Savage et al., BBC, 2 Feb. 2026 Did you know? Few literary characters can match the panache of French poet and soldier Cyrano de Bergerac, from Edmond Rostand's 1897 play of the same name. In his dying moments, Cyrano declares that the one thing left to him is his panache, and that assertion at once demonstrates the meaning of the word and draws upon its history. In both French and English, panache (which traces back to Late Latin pinnaculum, “small wing”) originally referred to a showy, feathery plume on a hat or helmet. Our familiar figurative sense debuted in the first English translation of Rostand's play, which made the literal plume a metaphor for Cyrano's unflagging verve even in death. In a 1903 speech Rostand himself described panache: “A little frivolous perhaps, most certainly a little theatrical, panache is nothing but a grace which is so difficult to retain in the face of death, a grace which demands so much strength that, all the same, it is a grace … which I wish for all of us.”

In this episode, we go beneath the surface into the high-stakes, "unforgiving" world of medium-voltage underground cable splicing. Drawing from Mark Savage's expert insights in Incident Prevention Magazine, we explore why cable identification isn't just a technical task—it's a survival skill. We break down the "Zero Trust" philosophy where every cable is treated as lethal until proven otherwise, and even then, safety margins remain non-negotiable. From arc flashes hotter than the sun to 40-foot remote hydraulic cutters, learn how elite utility professionals engineer redundant systems to eliminate single points of failure. Whether you are in the trenches or the boardroom, this episode offers a masterclass in total risk mitigation.   Read the article here: https://incident-prevention.com/blog/cable-identification-and-cutting-safety-for-medium-voltage-splicers/   Key Takeaways:   The Zero Trust Mindset: Workers must assume every cable is energized and lethal, even after a "green light" or testing indicates otherwise. The Physics of Failure: An arc flash in a medium-voltage environment can reach 35,000°F—hotter than the surface of the sun—instantly vaporizing copper and creating concussive pressure waves. Redundant Layers of Defense: Safety is achieved through overlapping layers: validated PPE (arc-rated clothing and dielectric gloves), administrative lockout/tagout (LOTO) with dual authority, and sophisticated electronic identification tools. Induced Voltage Risks: Even a disconnected "dead" cable can become lethal by picking up energy from live parallel cables, acting like a giant transformer; this necessitates strict grounding protocols. The "Remote Cut" Rule: The most critical safeguard is that the first cut into a cable must always be made remotely—using hot sticks, Bluetooth, or hydraulic tools—to keep the human worker outside the potential blast radius. Maintenance as Safety: A safety system is only as good as its tools; delicate electronic testers must be stored in climate-controlled, shock-absorbing cases to prevent calibration errors that lead to "false positives" on live lines. Questions and Answers: 1. Why is "Dual Authority" required for removing a lockout tag? Under this protocol, a tag can only be removed when both the Central Dispatch Center and the specific worker who physically placed the tag agree. This prevents dispatch from accidentally re-energizing a line while a worker is still in the vault, ensuring the person in the "line of fire" has the ultimate final say over their own safety. 2. What are the dangers of using a wire-pulling snake during cable identification? A worker should never run a conductive wire-pulling snake through a duct unless the cable inside is definitively proven dead. If the snake encounters an energized cable with degraded insulation, it creates a bridge for an arc flash to travel directly back to the worker's hands. 3. How do impulse test kits identify a specific cable across distances as long as 20 miles? The kit uses a transmitter at a known point (like a substation) to send a unique, directional, low-voltage electrical pulse pattern down the line. A splicer miles away uses a clamp-on receiver to read that specific pulse, allowing the cable to "broadcast" its identity and even its specific phase.   #UtilitySafety #ArcFlashProtection #ZeroTrust #LineWorker #IncidentPrevention #RiskManagement #UndergoundUtilities #Splicing   Subscribe to Incident Prevention Magazine - https://incident-prevention.com/subscribe-now/ Register for the iP Utility Safety Conference & Expo - https://utilitysafetyconference.com/   ________________________________ This podcast is sponsored by T&D Powerskills. These days, buying concert tickets is a huge expense. If fans miss out, they can often find tickets on resale sites at hugely inflated prices. Sometimes people resell their tickets because they can't go but there are also lots of “professional resellers” or ticket touts playing the system and making loads of profit. They buy tickets in bulk from the original seller platform, then mark them up to fans. We hear from a Taylor Swift super fan, who has spent hundreds on resale tickets. Now, a group of musicians including Dua Lipa, Coldplay, Sam Fender and Radiohead have sent a letter to the UK government, asking politicians to introduce a price cap on resale tickets to "stop touts from fleecing fans”. Ireland has already introduced a law to stop people selling tickets for more than their original price. Gary Devitt, who co-founded a platform in Ireland for fan-to-fan ticket resales called Toutless, gives us his view on what effect the law has had. In this episode we hear some stories about buying resale tickets, and ask whether price caps can actually stop the touts. It's a question artists have been racking their brains over for years: how long is the perfect pop song? The rise of streaming platforms meant that for a while, the answer was to keep it short and snappy, so listeners would be less likely to hit the skip button. After the launch of TikTok, pop songs shrank even more, with the average song in the charts lasting only three minutes and twelve seconds. But BBC News analysis shows that song lengths are creeping back up, with some of the biggest hits in the last few years - like Chappell Roan's Pink Pony Club - crossing over the four minute line. So, how has TikTok affected how artists make music? Ed Sheeran's long-running copyright battle over his hit Thinking Out Loud is finally over. That's after the US Supreme Court rejected an appeal to revive the copyright trial. It all started back in 2016 when Sheeran and his co-writer Amy Wadge were sued for allegedly copying Marvin Gaye's 1973 classic Let's Get It On. Sheeran, whose subsequent hits include Azizam and Shape of You, ended up winning that case, with the judge saying that lots of songs share similar elements and that Gaye's chord progressions couldn't be copyrighted. But the family of Ed Townsend, who co-wrote the song with Gaye, appealed the case, and it dragged on for nearly ten years.BBC music correspondent Mark Savage breaks down the case and gives a quick rundown of how copyright law works in music. He also discusses other famous plagiarism allegations and the rules around sampling music to create new songs.
