As Andrew puts it, Chief Justice John Roberts is “cherry-picking.” He's flying solo in this short edition of Main Justice (more to come with Mary in the next episode). Andrew gives a quick briefing on several of the Supreme Court's most consequential end-of-term rulings, starting with the decision not to hear an appeal in the E. Jean Carroll case. Andrew also touches on the Court's decision to uphold a Mississippi law to allow mail-in ballots that are sent by Election Day to be counted but saves his deepest analysis for two similar cases with opposing decisions: the firings of Lisa Cook and Rebecca Slaughter. While the Court ruled that the Trump administration must have cause to dismiss Cook from the Federal Reserve, it allowed the government to fire Slaughter from the Federal Trade Commission, a decision which Andrew calls deeply flawed showing the conservative majority's support for a “unitary executive.”  And finally, Andrew breaks down the Court's narrow decision to uphold birthright citizenship, and why the tight 5-4 split is the story. Today's Headlines: Trump's America 250 Great American State Fair opened on the National Mall in the rain, the power went out, the ferris wheel didn't work, there was no fair food, at least 10 states declined to send delegations, and Trump called it "packed to the brim" — the North Carolina booth displayed a Confederate flag overlay on a video loop before sponsors pulled out, which is on brand for an event whose main attractions were a Turning Point USA booth and a broken ferris wheel. Trump also unveiled a limited edition passport featuring his own face with the words "welcome, but be good!," announced plans to renovate a DC golf course starting September 1st, and personally inspected Lafayette Park to ensure it will have exactly 47 maple trees because he's the 47th president. The administration also announced the "Patriot Games" — aka the Hunger Games — a high school athletic competition on the National Mall in August where kids from each state compete for a $250,000 scholarship they split two ways, streaming on ESPN. The Iran war is back on: Trump announced strikes on Iranian targets after an attack on a commercial tanker, threatened to "militarily complete the job," Iran responded by asserting full control of the Strait, threatening to halt negotiations, and launching drone and missile attacks on Bahrain and Kuwait — while Israel and Lebanon signed a framework agreement requiring Israel to withdraw if Lebanon verifies Hezbollah has been fully dismantled, with the US committing $100 million in humanitarian aid. On the Russia beat, coup rumors against Putin got louder this weekend as Russia continues losing in Ukraine, Putin has dramatically increased his personal security, and former Russian defense minister Sergei Ivanov — once seen as Putin's potential successor — died at 73, with his death announced first by a basketball organization he was honorary president of, which is suspicious to say the least. In other news, a new CNN analysis found that Americans in Democratic congressional districts live longer, with nearly 70% of House Democrats representing districts where life expectancy exceeds the national average versus over 70% of Republicans representing districts where it falls below, alongside higher rates of diabetes, obesity, and uninsured residents in Republican districts. Mississippi passed a law creating a registry of undocumented immigrants to share with ICE, covering fewer than 30,000 people out of nearly 3 million state residents. And finally, a dangerous heat dome is forecast for the central and eastern US just in time for July 4th celebrations, so happy 250th America. Even as the ink dries on the 60-day memorandum of understanding with Iran, attacks on American cargo ships persist. Whatever President Trump chooses as his next course of action, he must be mindful of the fast-approaching November midterms. One wrong move leads to lost Senate or House seats and two years of lawfare by the Democrats. President Trump may need to reply to Iran's attacks disproportionately or risk being a lame-duck president with only a phone and pen as power.

Good News for Independents in DC.  Flu Outbreak Sickens Hundreds of Troops.  Mamdani is the new king of the Democratic Socialists, and he didn't get there by accident. He understood that closed primaries are a rigged game where the players are also the referees — and he played that game to perfection while more than a million New York City independents were locked out of the vote that actually decides who represents them. Paul Rieckhoff breaks down what happened in NYC, in Maryland, and in Utah, why Brad Lander worked so hard to kill the open primaries ballot initiative, and what the rise of the far left in safe-blue cities means for the angry middle that has nowhere left to go. From there, the briefing widens out. The Senate finally voted to check Trump's Iran war powers — with an asterisk worth knowing about. Hegseth forced the retirement of General CD Donahue, the last soldier out of Afghanistan, and the patriotic purged are starting to file for office. Trump botched a Medal of Honor ceremony, fixated on UFC fighters' muscles, and pushed a SAVE Act designed to scare Americans away from the ballot box. Ben Shapiro aired his own criticism, calling out JD Vance for getting embarrassed by Iran and saying he has never seen a weaker Republican performance. Hawk also plays a clip of Mark Thiessen, a former George W. Bush speechwriter and one of the most consistent Trump boosters at the Washington Post and on Fox News, breaking from his pattern of unconditional praise to call the Iran deal a disaster. Hawk walks through a list of Thiessen's previous columns dating back to March, each one predicting or celebrating Trump's imminent victory in Iran, as context for how significant it is to hear Thiessen criticize the deal at all. Hawk covers the financial terms of the agreement, including the release of roughly $100 billion in previously frozen Iranian assets that is already underway, on top of a $300 billion reconstruction fund. He also references the deal's language committing the United States to lifting all sanctions on Iran, including on oil sales, and contrasts the entire outcome with what the Obama-era JCPOA accomplished without a war or a closed Strait of Hormuz. When Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz earlier this year, experts projected oil prices would go to $200 a barrel. But then… they didn't. In fact, while gasoline prices rose in the United States, and Europe and Asia suffered higher costs, the resulting energy crisis wasn't even as bad as what followed Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Why? China. The country seems to have absorbed the costs of Trump's war of choice by releasing hundreds of millions of barrels from its strategic stockpile. There's a lot on the docket today. To pull apart the Iran “deal” framework, Mary and Andrew are joined by Tess Bridgeman, an international law expert who served as a legal advisor in the Obama administration through the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran. Tess lays out how President Trump's 14-point memorandum of understanding differs from what was brokered in 2015, and what to watch for as negotiations continue. Before she joins, the co-hosts begin by analyzing several examples of what Mary calls the Trump Justice Department's "consistent effort” to avoid judicial review: their refusal to put into a sworn declaration that they won't move forward with the “Anti-Weaponization” fund and a motion to dismiss a Clean Air Act violation lawsuit against Elon Musk's xAI data center in Mississippi. They also tackle a few instances where, contrastingly, the government has positioned itself “on the offense” this week, including an indictment of 15 protesters on a conspiracy charge against ICE and the DHS' intent to build a border wall through a holy landmark atop Mount Cristo Rey in New Mexico. Further reading: Here is the New York Times piece, Mary referred to about the Las Cruces case: A Diocese Tries to Protect Its 29-Foot Jesus From Trump's Border Wall Here is the Just Security tracker that Mary and Andrew mentioned: Immigration Habeas Tracker: Government Obstruction, Judicial Trust, and Accountability Sign up for MS NOW Premium on Apple Podcasts to listen to this show and other MS podcasts without ads. Four months ago, the U.S. and Israel launched a surprise attack on Iran. Supporters predicted a decisive victory that would curb Iran's nuclear ambitions and reshape the balance of power in the Middle East. Instead, the war became a costly stalemate. Iran's power continued, the conflict dragged on, and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz disrupted global energy markets, sending economic shockwaves around the world. Now, a ceasefire has ended the fighting. But critics argue that the agreement gives Iran major concessions in exchange for empty promises about its nuclear program that prove difficult to enforce. Today, Karim Sadjadpour returns to the podcast to examine the end of the Iran war. Why did the Trump administration agree to this deal, and will history remember it as a necessary compromise or a strategic failure? Stijn Schmitz welcomes Trader Ferg to the show. Trader Ferg is a Full-time Trader and the Author of the Trader Ferg Substack. Trader Ferg shares his current market views, highlighting several contrarian opportunities built around long-term, underappreciated assets. He remains bullish on scarce resources like thermal coal, where tight supply and Asian demand support high-quality names, though pure-play options are limited. In energy, he sees an asymmetric upside and prefers long-dated options on integrated trading houses like Shell, leveraging torque to Brent and LNG while benefiting from volatility through their opaque but highly profitable trading arms. He also points to offshore engineering and oil services as an underinvested niche with rock-bottom valuations, already showing outperformance and strong earnings visibility. A key theme is the shift toward resilient, capital-light business models. Trader Ferg is particularly enthusiastic about emerging market exchange operators, which he views as inflation-protected, high-margin plays that have been out of favor due to a strong US dollar but are poised for a decade of growth as global capital flows rotate. In gold, he sees a structural bull market driven by de-dollarization and central bank buying, though near-term consolidation is likely after flushing out speculative tourists. He advocates a patient, long-horizon approach, cautioning against short-term futures and binary geopolitical bets, which have historically been unprofitable for him. Instead, he emphasizes buying cheap, hated assets with robust free cash flow and letting time and volatility work in his favor. Throughout the discussion, he stresses the importance of stress-testing assumptions, learning from mistakes, and focusing on durable trends rather than short-term noise, insights he regularly shares through his Substack. Hawk plays a clip of Nichols appearing on Deadline White House with Nicole Wallace on June 22nd. He covers Trump's claim that Iran's enriched uranium stockpile is essentially worthless, a reversal from his earlier position that Iran must surrender its entire nuclear program. Hawk points out that Iran only resumed enrichment after Trump tore up the JCPOA in 2018, and that JD Vance's announcement of independent nuclear inspectors entering Iran was something the Obama deal already secured from 2015 to 2018. Hawk argues that Iran won this war not militarily but economically and psychologically, by accurately profiling both Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu from the start and understanding exactly how each would respond to domestic economic pressure. He notes Trump was warned before the war began, including by Tucker Carlson, that Iran's first move would be closing the Strait of Hormuz. He didn't listen. Hawk also addresses Pete Hegseth's role, the Iranian delegation's refusal to shake JD Vance's hand, and the unresolved conflict between Israel and Lebanon that continues to block any lasting deal. The former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton sat down with David Remnick at the 92nd Street Y, in New York, on Monday evening, after the Trump Administration announced a memorandum of understanding to end its war in Iran. Remnick asked whether the United States lost this war. “Yes,” Clinton replied. “The United States has come out weaker. Iran has come out stronger.” According to Clinton, Israel repeatedly tried to pressure the Obama Administration into backing a similar action in Iran, but she didn't take the bait. “They would say things like ‘Our planes are on the tarmac,' ” Clinton recalled. “And I'd say, ‘Well, good luck. Great. Why are you doing this?' ” They also discuss Joe Biden's decision to run for a second term, and its fateful consequences. “He made a terrible mistake,” she said. Had Biden stayed with his plan of serving for one term, “I believe whoever emerged . . . would have beaten Donald Trump.” Further reading and listening:  “Hillary Clinton on the Psychology of Autocrats,” an episode of The Political Scene  “Hillary Clinton Explains What Happened,” an episode of The New Yorker Radio Hour “The Broadway Life of Hillary Clinton,” by Michael Schulman “Curtis Sittenfeld's ‘Rodham' Offers the Catharsis of Uncomplicated Regret,” by Nora Caplan-Bricker The Political Scene draws on the reporting and analysis found in The New Yorker for lively conversations about the big questions in American politics. Today's Headlines: Oh boy, what a weekend! Trump deployed the National Guard to the reflecting pool, where they arrested a 67-year-old former Olympic cyclist who stopped during a bike ride and touched the water to feel the liner — charging him with destruction of government property. Trump posted that "multiple individuals" were arrested for vandalism and threatened "years in jail." The algae situation is now worse than ever, and we now know that the no-bid contract was awarded to a company owned by a Trump donor and Mar-a-Lago member named John Cafaro whose firm Greenwater Services was clearly not equipped for the job. Trump also got into a feud with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni after claiming she "begged" him for a photo at the G7, which Italy responded to by canceling a planned state visit and Meloni posting a video saying "Italy and I do not beg," and Trump doubled down anyway. He also posted a photo of a random woman captioned "great daughter, my honor!!" who turned out to be a Clinton-era businesswoman whose actual daughter is the chairwoman of the Manhattan Republican Party. On the war beat, less than a day after signing the memorandum of understanding, US intelligence warned Trump that Netanyahu would likely undermine the deal — which he immediately did by continuing strikes in Lebanon, prompting Iran to close the Strait of Hormuz again. JD Vance made it to Switzerland for negotiations on Sunday with Tweedles Dee & Dum (Kushner & Witkoff), and Trump promptly torpedoed the meeting by posting threats of "harder strikes" against Iran while it was actively happening, causing Iran to walk out and demand an apology. As of Sunday night talks were back on, and Trump announced that if everything falls apart he's blaming JD Vance. The Pentagon also told Congress it needs $80 billion to cover the cost of the Iran war and replenish depleted ammunition supplies, Republicans need 60 Senate votes to pass it, and it's not looking great. Meanwhile, the Qatar-gifted $400 million plane has completed modifications and is ready to join Trump's Air Force One rotation, and the DOJ refused in a court filing to put in writing that they won't create the Traitor Fund, calling a written promise "unnecessary" because they already said so verbally, which is exactly what someone planning to do it anyway would say. Iran War analysis takes center stage as Professor Nick Giordano breaks down whether Trump's Iran MOU represents strategic victory, dangerous ambiguity, or a temporary pause that gives Tehran time. The real question is simple: Did America force the outcome it wanted, or did Iran survive long enough to make Washington soften its demands? In this episode of The P.A.S. Report Podcast, Professor Giordano examines the good, the bad, and the ugly of Trump's Iran MOU. He explains how the U.S. military shattered Iran's military capabilities, why the Strait of Hormuz and strategic oil reserves changed the equation, and how Tehran may use enriched uranium, proxy networks, and economic pressure to shape the final outcome. What You'll Learn In This Episode: Why the Iran War weakened Tehran's military, air force, navy, missile systems, and drone capabilities How Trump's Iran MOU creates serious concerns over vague language, sanctions relief, proxy loopholes, and the Strait of Hormuz Why highly enriched uranium remains the ultimate test of whether America achieved real victory or merely delayed the threat How Iran may use Hezbollah, the Houthis, and other proxies as bargaining chips for sanctions relief Why China, Russia, North Korea, and terrorist networks may study this conflict as a blueprint for making America blink Was the Iran War worth it? The answer depends on whether Trump's MOU locks in American leverage or allows Iran to stall, rebuild, and claim survival. Topics covered: Iran War, Trump Iran MOU, Strait of Hormuz, Iran nuclear program, highly enriched uranium, sanctions relief, Iran proxy networks, Hezbollah and the Houthis, strategic oil reserves, Middle East conflict
