You might have met Jim Sporleder in the groundbreaking documentary Paper Tigers. Jim is the former principal of Lincoln High School in Walla Walla, Washington, where he led his team and ultimately his students on the journey of becoming a trauma-informed school. The work Jim, his team, and his students did was so phenomenal that it inspired the documentary Paper Tigers. If you haven't seen Paper Tigers, I highly recommend it. It is absolutely worth your time! A New Lens on BehaviorJim was inspired to shift toward a trauma-informed lens because he knew his school and his students needed something different. He attended a trauma and toxic stress conference in 2010 where he was exposed to a completely new paradigm on behavior.“I always believed behavior was a choice,” Jim said. He left that conference in 2010 with a new – and radically different - understanding of behavior. He said it felt like he was hit by a bolt of lightning; he knew immediately that his approach to discipline needed to change. James is the principal of Derby Hills Elementary School in Derby, Kansas. Throughout his career, Moffett has taught various demographic groups, observing the differences and similarities in effective instructional and behavioral strategies. Ultimately, James realized what we all know meaningful relationships enhance behavior and academic success. He often threw around the words “grit” and “perseverance” but after viewing the movie documenting Jim Sporleder’s work in Washington Paper Tigers, it came full circle. Since then, James has worked to create a trauma-informed and trauma-responsive environment at Derby Hills, encompassing safe spots, mindfulness, self-regulation, and an explicit SEL curriculum. Being a principal can be a challenging and demanding role in schools. Balancing the needs of students, with those of the staff and the school community can be a difficult task. With so many competing needs, adopting a trauma informed approach can seem like a enormous task, particularly when teachers and the school community are tired and weary of new approaches. So why would educational leaders want to adopt trauma informed practice in their schools? We speak to Jim Sporleder, author of the book, Trauma Informed Practice: An Implementation Guide for Administrators and School Personnel. As the principal of Lincoln High School in Walla Walla, WA, Jim and his staff’s pioneering work was documented in the movie Paper Tigers.
