Nicole Sherren, a neuroscience expert and Principal Consultant at R2P Solutions, joins The Honourable P. Colleen Suche, Justice of the Court of King's Bench of Manitoba, for an engaging discussion on the profound impact of childhood adversity on brain development, mental health, and addiction. Drawing on cutting-edge research, Sherren illustrates how early adverse experiences can rewire the brain, heightening susceptibility to addiction and mental health challenges later in life. The discussion explores the pivotal role of epigenetics in fostering resilience and examines how addiction-related behaviors intersect with justice systems, particularly when impaired self-control conflicts with concepts of accountability. Together, they highlight the critical need for interdisciplinary collaboration among neuroscience, health, and justice professionals to drive effective policies and meaningful systemic reform. Chapter 1: Summary of The Deepest Well"The Deepest Well: Healing the Long-Term Effects of Childhood Adversity" by Nadine Burke Harris explores the profound impact that childhood adversity can have on lifelong health. The author, a pediatrician and founder of the Center for Youth Wellness, draws on her clinical experiences and research to illustrate how traumatic experiences in childhood, such as abuse, neglect, and household dysfunction, can lead to serious physical and mental health issues in adulthood.Harris presents the concept of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and explains the biological mechanisms through which these experiences affect brain development, stress response, and overall health. She emphasizes that early interventions and supportive environments can mitigate these effects and promote healing.Throughout the book, Harris combines personal stories, scientific research, and practical solutions for individuals and communities to address the challenges posed by childhood adversity. Her aim is to inspire a deeper understanding of the long-term consequences of trauma and to advocate for a more compassionate approach to healthcare and social services that considers the whole person and their experiences. In summary, "The Deepest Well" underscores the importance of recognizing and addressing childhood trauma to improve health outcomes and encourages a collective effort to create supportive environments for children and families.Chapter 2: The Theme of The Deepest Well"The Deepest Well: Healing the Long-Term Effects of Childhood Adversity" by Nadine Burke Harris is not a work of fiction but a non-fiction book that discusses the impact of childhood trauma on health and development. The book is based on Harris's research and clinical experiences, particularly in her role as a pediatrician. Here are some key plot points, character development (in a broad sense relating to individuals affected by childhood adversity), and thematic ideas present in the book: Key Plot Points:1. Introduction to Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs):- Harris introduces the concept of ACEs, which include various forms of childhood trauma such as abuse, neglect, and household dysfunction. She explains how these experiences can have lasting effects on an individual's physical and mental health.2. The Science Behind Trauma and Health:- The book delves into the neuroscience of stress and trauma, highlighting how adverse experiences can alter brain development, immune function, and the body's stress response.3. Case Studies:- Throughout the book, Harris presents case studies of children who have faced significant adversity and examines their health outcomes. These real-life examples illustrate the profound impact of ACEs on individual lives.4. Personal Journey:- Harris provides insights into her own experiences and motivations for studying childhood adversity, including her work with underserved communities and the challenges her patients face.5. Intervention and Healing:- The latter chapters focus on potential solutions and interventions. Harris discusses evidence-based practices that can help mitigate the effects of childhood trauma, emphasizing the importance of supportive relationships, therapy, and community resources. Character Development:While "The Deepest Well" does not have traditional characters in a narrative sense, it does explore the development of individuals affected by ACEs:1. Children with ACEs:- Harris shares the stories of various children who have experienced trauma. Through these narratives, readers witness their struggles and resilience, showcasing the complexities of their emotional and physical health journeys.2. Nadine Burke Harris:- As the author, Harris herself undergoes a form of character development as she

In a Chinese study, donor CAR-T cells sent autoimmune diseases into remission. There's hope that the therapy is scalable. And, scientists used decades of yellow-bellied marmot research to find a way to measure how adverse events affect wild animals' survival.CAR-T Cell Therapies Show Promise For Autoimmune DiseasesFor decades, immunologists have explored CAR-T cell therapy as an effective tool to fight blood cancer. Increasingly, CAR-T cells are being explored as a potential silver bullet for treating autoimmune diseases, like lupus—which currently have no cure. Thus far, CAR-T cell therapy has largely used CRISPR-modified immune cells from a person to treat that person's own diseases. But new research from China has made a huge step forward for this treatment: Researchers were successful in using donated CAR-T cells from one person to treat another person's systemic sclerosis, an autoimmune condition that causes atypical growth of connective tissues. If donor CAR-T cell therapy does indeed work, as posited in this paper, it could mean the therapy is more scalable than it would be otherwise. Joining Ira to talk about this study and its potential impact is Daniel Baker, PhD student in the immunology lab of Dr. Carl June at the University of Pennsylvania.Measuring The Effects Of Early Life Adversity—In MarmotsIt's well-established in psychology that if you experience trauma as a child, chances are it'll impact your physical and mental health as an adult, and could even affect your economic status. In academic terms, this is called early childhood adversity. And psychologists have developed a scoring system for measuring the cumulative effect of adverse childhood experiences, which can include abuse and household dysfunction, and it can help predict health risks later in life.So we can specifically measure that in humans. But what about other animals? If you've adopted a dog that's had a turbulent past, you know that that can result in reclusive or skittish behavior as an adult. But there hasn't been a good way to measure it in wild animals.Well, a new study from UCLA, published in the journal Ecology Letters, establishes a similar index for wild animals, and it used decades of findings from a mammal: the yellow-bellied marmot. So how could it help conservation efforts for other animals?Ira Flatow talks with Xochitl Ortiz-Ross, a PhD student in ecology and evolutionary biology at UCLA, and one of the authors on that study.Transcripts for each segment will be available after the show airs on sciencefriday.com. Greatness is sourced from the inside-out. The leader who works on their own tendency to get defensive, learns to regulate unproductive and reactive emotions, and understands their own weaknesses is one who gets out of their own way. Part of that deeper work includes healing the impact of childhood adversity. Today we're talking about how our childhood adversity can impact our leadership effectiveness.   I am delighted to be back with you, my friends, after our summer break!  Our brief hiatus during the summer months was time well spent, as I devoted my energies to nurturing the Women of Wonder community.  Today's episode holds a special place in my heart! It stems from a question I posed on Instagram a few months ago about career guidance. Even though my post was intended for general advice, the very first query I received was related to mental health. Given my expertise in that area I decided to tackle this topic personally. I did some extra research to deepen my understanding and extend my knowledge beyond my home state for a broader perspective. For those on the path or considering a career in mental health, I am thrilled to engage in this discussion with you and share a glimpse into my personal journey with its twists and turns in the hope of inspiring you to believe that it is never too late to pursue your dream career. I provide practical guidance, especially for those interested in private practice, and discuss the steps to reach that stage. Beyond the specifics, I also explore the broader aspects of choosing a career in mental health.  If mental health is not your career interest, this episode may not be for you, but please share it with those who might benefit. What Do You Want to Do After Graduation?  Before pursuing a career in mental health, it's crucial to ask yourself what you envision doing once you complete your education. Your career goals will significantly influence the path you choose. Whether you aim to work in private practice, schools, social programs, or community centers, your desired outcome will guide your decisions. What Do You Want to Learn in Your Program?  The second vital consideration is the content of your educational program. The courses and curriculum should align with your interests and career goals. For example, if you are interested in clinical work, you will want a program focusing on psychology, counseling, and developing essential therapeutic skills. Ensure the program you choose matches what you want to learn. What License Do You Need?  Licensing requirements can vary widely depending on your location and career aspirations. To work independently in a clinical setting or private practice, you will typically need a Master's degree in counseling or social work. The type of license you pursue- whether it is in counseling, social work, marriage and family therapy, or another related field- must align with your career goals. Understanding the specific licensing process for your chosen field is crucial. The process often includes passing exams, completing supervised hours, and obtaining provisional licenses before achieving full licensure. 3 Key Factors Before embarking on a career in mental health, consider your ultimate career goals, the content of your educational program, and the specific licensing requirements for your chosen field. These three key factors will help you make informed decisions and navigate your path to a fulfilling career in mental health. Education and Early Career Steps  Upon completing a Master's degree in a mental health-related field, the next step is to pursue licensure. This journey often begins with entry-level positions. I worked at a domestic violence agency and served as an advocate in court for survivors of sexual and domestic violence to get social work experience. Engaging in one-on-one counseling with supervision can also be instrumental in building your expertise. Some positions may offer supervision as part of the compensation, which can be advantageous. Accumulating Supervised Hours  Gaining clinical experience and supervised hours is essential for licensure. I worked simultaneously at a domestic violence agency and a group practice to accumulate hours. My goal was to maximize clinical hours and work toward licensure efficiently. Seeking employment with supervision included can be financially advantageous and help you achieve licensure sooner. Pursuing Doctoral Education  While pursuing licensure, some individuals opt for doctoral education. I initially enrolled in a Ph.D. program focused on human behavior but switched to a Psy.D. program focusing on clinical courses over research and statistics. Doctoral programs offer specialized knowledge, and choosing one aligned with your career goals is crucial. Licensure Path Choices  After completing a doctoral degree, you may have the option to pursue additional supervised clinical work to obtain a psychology license. However, this route may be time-consuming and require working for free or paying for supervision. Choosing to pursue licensure should align with your career goals and financial considerations. Some mental health professionals decide not to pursue licensure and their degrees are still valuable in their practices. Transitioning to Private Practice  Many mental health professionals aspire to open a private practice. However, graduate programs often lack comprehensive business training. Therefore, you may need additional education or mentorship in entrepreneurship and business management to establish and manage a successful private practice. Self-Assessment and Decision-Making  Throughout your career journey, it is essential to reflect continually on your goals and desires. Ask yourself what you want to achieve, what you want to learn, and which license or credentials align with your career aspirations. Researching state licensure requirements and staying informed about evolving regulations is essential. Resources and Reading Recommendations  For those pursuing careers in mental health or anyone interested in gaining insights into the field, several books provide valuable knowledge and perspectives: The Gift of Therapy by Irvin Yalom: Essays offering insights into the therapist's experience and boosting confidence. Letters to a Young Therapist by Mary Pipher: A must-read for therapists, offering guidance and reassurance. Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl: Explores human resilience and the search for meaning in life. An Unquiet Mind: A Memoir of Moods and Madness by Kay Redfield Jamison: A personal story of living with mental illness and pursuing a career in mental health. Emotional Inheritance: A Therapist, Her Patients, and the Legacy of Trauma by Galit Atlas: Explores trauma and its intergenerational impact. The Boy Who Was Raised as a Dog by Dr. Bruce Perry: Chronicles stories of resilience and survival in the face of unimaginable trauma. My Grandmother's Hands by Resmaa Menakem: Explores trauma, racial trauma, and resilience. The Deepest Well: Healing the Long-Term Effects of Childhood Adversity by Nadine Burke Harris: Discusses childhood adversity and its lifelong impact on health. These books offer valuable insights, whether you are pursuing a career in mental health or simply interested in human behavior and resilience. A Dynamic Process The journey from education to practice in the mental health field is a dynamic process that requires ongoing self-assessment, reflection, and alignment with personal and professional goals. It is a rewarding path that offers opportunities for growth and the chance to have a meaningful impact on the lives of others.   Quotes:

Adam Prince is a member of Dad Edge Alliance. Some individuals, like Adam Prince, have experienced childhood trauma and instability that can have lasting effects on their lives. Adam opens up about his journey of overcoming these challenges and creating a better future for himself and his family. In this episode, Adam Prince and Larry discuss the power of overcoming childhood trauma and making a conscious effort to change the game. They dive into the importance of breaking patterns and creating a different life despite challenges.  Adam describes his childhood as marked by instability. He moved between several different schools, houses, and apartments, even living in a motel for a period of time. This constant upheaval created a sense of uncertainty and unpredictability in his life.  This conversation between Adam and Larry highlights the importance of acknowledging and overcoming childhood trauma and instability. It is not enough to simply accept these experiences as part of one's identity. Instead, individuals must actively work towards healing, understanding, and breaking the patterns that have been ingrained in them. Adam's story is a powerful example of resilience and the capacity to overcome adversity. Despite the instability and trauma he experienced, he has chosen to take control of his life and create a different path.   Resilience and gratitude are two powerful qualities that can help individuals overcome adversity and find strength in the face of challenges. From a young age, Adam experienced the absence of his biological father, who left when he was little and only reappeared briefly when he was 12. This lack of a stable father figure could have easily left him feeling abandoned and resentful. However, Adam chooses not to dwell on the negative emotions associated with his father's departure. Instead, he focuses on the lessons he learned and the resilience he gained from navigating life without a consistent male presence. Adam's ability to share his experiences with his own children is a testament to his resilience and gratitude. Rather than shielding them from the realities of his past, he chooses to have open and honest conversations with them. He does not shy away from discussing the hardships he endured but presents them in a matter-of-fact manner. This approach allows his children to see the strength and resilience that can emerge from adversity. thedadedge.com/alliance www.thedadedge.com/friday119

Scientists usually expect childhood to be nurturing, safe, and characterized by high levels of caregiver investment. However, evidence from history, anthropology, and primatology can challenge this view. Throughout human evolution, children have faced threats and deprivation, at varied levels across space and time. And these varied levels of exposure to adversity—which over time were higher than is typical in industrialized societies—likely favored a high degree of phenotypic plasticity, or the ability to tailor development to different conditions.  Willem Frankenhuis, an evolutionary and developmental psychologist at Utrecht University, and Dorsa Amir, a developmental scientist at the University of California, Berkeley, have published research synthesizing evidence from history, anthropology, and primatology relevant to estimating childhood adversity across human evolution. These cross-cultural investigations have focused on three forms of threat (infanticide, violent conflict, and predation) and three forms of deprivation (social, cognitive, and nutritional). Willem and Dorsa discuss their findings, along with some implications, in this conversation with APS's Ludmila Nunes. They have also published on this topic, and Willem also recently presented some of their findings at the 2023 APS Annual Convention in Washington D.C.    “What are the types of conditions that our ancestors experienced?” Dorsa asks. “And what does that perspective offer to us today in trying to better understand adversity?”

This episode of AJP Audio features two articles from the February issue of AJP.  First up, we have Nathaniel G. Harnett, Ph.D. (Harvard Medical School), discussing the impact of adversity and stress on racial disparities in childhood brain development among Black and White American children.  Following that, Ziv Ben-Zion, Ph.D. (Yale University), discusses a non-exact replication study of a study published in AJP by Stevens et al. (previously featured on AJP Audio) looking at brain-based biotypes to guide treatment following trauma.  And of course, we'll check in with AJP Editor-in-Chief Dr. Ned Kalin about the rest of the February issue and how it all fits together. Transcript Harnett interview [01:05] How do less tangible factors like trauma, stress, and exposure to violence impact brain development? [03:07] What do you mean by toxic stress? My guest this episode is Tracie Afifi, Professor in the Departments of Community Health Sciences and Psychiatry at the University of Manitoba and an Associate Editor of the journal Child Abuse & Neglect. Tracie's research advances our understanding of adverse childhood experiences and protective factors by examining, on a macro level, what makes an experience positive or negative and looking for other experiences that fit those criteria. She and I discuss her research and answer a listener's question about whether kids today are more or less resilient than previous generations. April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, a great time to talk about the way we message around child abuse and childhood adversities. The ways in which we've messaged about childhood adversity in the past may have served us very well, helping people come to terms with how important the topic is, the scope of the problem, and the lifelong impacts of it. But they may not be serving us very well now. What if, in describing the problem as enormous and making that the centerpiece of our messaging, we're making people think that the problem is intractable and they're powerless as an individual person to make a change? Or, in focusing on the stories of individual families in order to gain empathy for them, what we really seem to be implying to the public is that there's no room for public policy solutions, that this is a matter for each family to solve by themselves. We talked to Julie Sweetland, senior advisor at the FrameWorks Institute, about how to reframe childhood adversity.Topics in this episode:Origin story (2:21)Common communication traps (6:15)Threat of modernity (14:28)Key recommendations (19:09)Systemic racism (32:16)Hope and resilience (35:45)Collective responsibility (39:55)Evidence-based communication (42:00)For more information (43:52)Links:Julie Sweetland, Ph.D., is a sociolinguist and senior advisor at the FrameWorks Institute.ACEs: adverse childhood experiences“Reframing Childhood Adversity: Promoting Upstream Approaches,” by Julie Sweetland, FrameWorks Institute (February 16, 2021)Harvard University Center on the Developing ChildNational Scientific Council on the Developing ChildPrevent Child Abuse AmericaSocial CurrentCDC: Centers for Disease Control and PreventionZero to ThreeAscend at the Aspen InstituteBuilding Better ChildhoodsFor more information about National Children's Alliance and the work of Children's Advocacy Centers, visit our website at NationalChildrensAlliance.org. Michael Ostrolenk has been exploring the relationship between post-conventional living, transformational leadership, optimising health and regenerative paradigms his whole life.    His interest in human growth and personal development began when he was 9 years old and worked with psychotherapist Pat Lawson learning biofeedback, meditation and guided imagery.   The fact that Michael started his journey so young really intrigued me!    So, while we will have him on again as a guest to explore the myriad of ways his expertise can help his clients, today's focus is on the adversity and disability Michael experienced as a child.   “Our mess is so often our message” in that it can break us or make us -– and it can be the catalyst for a lifetime of learning and helping others as in Michael's case. Here is a summary of Michael's extensive bio: Master's degree in Transpersonal Counselling Psychology, from John F. Kennedy University Post-graduate training in somatic psychology from the California Institute for Integral Studies  Certified massage therapist from the McKinnon Institute Marriage and Family Therapist, he has served patients dealing with mental illness, neurological impairments (Center for Adaptive Learning), chronic & life-threatening diseases and relationship problems. This included working with the Cancer Support Community in San Francisco  Served on the Board of Directors for the Health Medicine Forum, as well as the Project Director for their Health Panel Program – a group of health-care practitioners from all disciplines who were dedicated to the collaborative exploration, practice and advancement of patient-centered integrated medicine Michael has helped with research exploring the use of various body/mind practices and traditional medicine approaches to cancer, energy medicine for ALS, neurofeedback  Founding member of the Integral Institute Certified in Spiral Dynamics A Transpartisan Social entrepreneur, who is a leading expert in the field of transpartisan public policy. He has successfully convened policy initiatives in the areas of transparency, privacy, defence, foreign policy and national security from 2001-2020 including;  Co-founded and served as National Director of the Liberty Coalition, a transpartisan coalition of groups working to protect civil liberties, privacy and transparency 2005-2020  Created and led the transpartisan Medical Privacy Coalition Served as Senior Political Analyst for the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons 2001-2011 and Citizens for Health 2001-2016 In response to unConstitutional wars, Ostrolenk co-founded the American Conservative Defense Alliance in 2008, which promoted a traditionally conservative foreign and defence policy. He was also a fellow at ICIT: Center for Cyber-Influence Operations Studies (CCIOS) in 2018. From 2016-2020 he served as Coalition Coordinator for the National Election Defense Coalition. Serving as Co-Director and President of Reuniting America, he organised and ran transpartisan leadership retreats from 2006-2008. He was also on the steering Committee for Open the Government 2015-2019.  Has also consulted for Edwatch , Center for Cognitive Liberty and Ethics , International Center for the Study of Psychiatry and Psychology, Pentagon Budget Campaign and the Arlington Institute Graduate of SEALFIT's three-week academy and SEALFIT Kokoro camp, and is now a Master Coach and Head Instructor with SEALFIT's Unbeatable Mind Academy.  Master Coach for Spartan 7 Round Table Phalanx Executive Experiential and Leadership Course The Director of Human Resilience at Apeiron Zoh where he works with medical and psychological staff in creating online and in-person programs seeking to transcend the limits of human performance and health He has also studied various martial arts including Tae Kwon Do, Japanese Jujitsu, Krav Maga, and Shaolin Kempo. Michael is also certified in MovNat. Some of his other training in somatic and transpersonal psychology includes: Body-Mind Practices – East and West;  Healing and Heuristic Potential of Non-Ordinary States of Consciousness; Sensory Awareness;  Family Systems: Somatic Movement Approaches I;  Family Systems: Somatic Movement Approaches II;  The Body: Experiences and Conceptualized Towards a Practical Phenomenology;  Altered States of Consciousness;  Intelligence and Insight Ways of Knowing;  Body Oriented Psychotherapy- Panic & Depression;  Body Oriented Psychotherapy- Inner Critic.  … Not bad for someone who struggled with a learning disability!   Talking points: How his learning disability then led to other mental and emotional challenges like obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) The importance of self-advocacy, even as a child The importance of parental support and listening to the child How “unconventional” solutions like biofeedback, meditation, and martial arts saved him The danger of labelling children with diagnoses rather than seeing them as whole people with needs due to underlying concerns The danger of treating all learning disabilities with a one-size-fits-all approach How he was originally “diagnosed” with being lazy since he really was brilliant in many areas even though his academic performance was low in others How there may be underlying issues like an undiagnosed traumatic brain injury (TBI) that are misdiagnosed if recognized at all That someone diagnosed with a learning disability may actually be neurodivergent and a genius, where they simply think differently.   Connect with Michael Ostrolenk: Website: https://www.michaeldostrolenk.com The Emergent Human Podcast: https://soundcloud.com/mostrolenk  YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCueciKwrchJ2gtls5tAHD6A  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-ostrolenk-324665/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/mostrolenk Instagram  https://www.instagram.com/mostrolenk/     SUBSCRIBE: iTunes: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/self-heal-with-dr-irene/id1561226627 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/1pxldTJY5MZmneyz8IpSvm Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCFTN-EU3umbz_0d0GFwk_Bw Stitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/show/selfheal-with-dr-irene TuneIn: https://tunein.com/podcasts/Health--Wellness-Podcasts/Self-Heal-(with-Dr-Irene)-p1421793/ Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cDovL3NlbGZoZWFsaW5nLm1pbmRzaGFyZWNvbGxhYm9yYXRpdmUubGlic3lucHJvLmNvbS9yc3M Deezer: https://www.deezer.com/show/2461592   Connect with us!
