Runners of NYC is relaunching. We're changing up the format — fewer studio sit-downs, more conversations out in the wild across the five boroughs — and we're thrilled to welcome Patryk Odedina as our new co-host. Same mission of surfacing the untold stories behind NYC's running culture, with a fresh approach to how we tell them. More soon.First...Meet Patryk.------"I was at the gym one day, doing the typical dude thing — asking my neighbor Kenny what he was working on. Chest? Back? Arms? He just looked at me, straight-faced, and said: 'Five or six miles on the treadmill.' I swear, I had never heard someone say something like that in my life. And Kenny's not some lean guy — he's a husky dude. So I'm standing there like, what is he talking about? Then he tells me he's training for the New York City Marathon. That's all I needed. I thought, if Kenny can do it, I can do it."Patryk Odedina is a Bronx-based runner who picked up the sport at 29 after a gym conversation with his neighbor Kenny, and has since completed all six World Marathon Majors while chipping nearly 90 minutes off his debut time. Background:– Born in Poland, raised in the Bronx from age 3. Polish mother, Nigerian father.– Played basketball at Lincoln High School (the one in Yonkers) and Lehman College. No running background.– Spent six-plus years in tech salesThe origin story: Late 2018, lifting weights in a Harlem gym, his neighbor Kenny mentioned he was training for the NYC Marathon. Patryk had never heard anyone say something like that out loud. He signed up for the 2020 race through Team for Kids before knowing what a 5K was.Marathon résumé:– 2020 NYC (virtual): 4:40. Ran the actual route solo in the rain; mom as support crew.– 2021 NYC: ~4:57. The 50th anniversary edition.– 2023 London: 3:58. Finally cracked sub-4 on his fourth attempt.– Six Stars: NYC → London → Berlin → Tokyo → Boston → Chicago. Wore a Yankees singlet in Boston.– 2026 Jersey City: 3:09. Now chasing sub-3.Beyond the race: Associate board member of the Bronx Burners, a 501(c)3 that has distributed $100K+ in college scholarships to Bronx youth. Creator of the Run Clubs of NYC video series — 49 NYC clubs and counting. This is Runners of NYC. A podcast from CITIUS MAG. "Lake City Chamber Chat" Ava LaRue speaks with Heather Thomas, Executive Director for the Lake City Chamber of Commerce about Business After Hours at Forward Bank this Thursday, the Memorial Day Program at Lincoln High School on Monday, and Water Ski Days concert tickets.
Jaws of Justice Radio investigates how we can achieve justice from a system of laws deeply rooted in economic, social and political inequality. We want to dispel misconceptions created by the news and entertainment industry, politicians and our educational system. We hope you will listen. Host Bev Livingston opens our hour speaking with Bishop Saundra McFadden-Weaver. They are going to tell listeners about Prison Ministry, feeding homeless people and proving the support which benefit reentry and impacted persons as they transition from incarceration to a very different life. Life in prison is defined by a severe lack of personal choices. For example, while held by law enforcement, a person has no choice of the company they share their life. A person's name and choices is stripped away. Life outside, or "reentry," challenges formerly incarcerated individuals with the heavy stigma of a criminal record which can restrict access to jobs, housing, and civic participation. Many return to distressed communities, making successful social integration difficult. Bishop Saundra McFadden-Weaver was born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri, graduating from Lincoln High School, then moving on to higher learning she holds a B.S in Agricultural Science, a Masters in Theological Studies, and a Doctorate in Pastoral Theology. Bishop McFadden-Weaver has been Councilwoman of Kansas City, MO 3rd District, Missouri Victims Advocate for Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), served in Prison Ministries, headed the call to regulate Bounty Hunters and saw to it that change came to the Federal Laws governing Bounty Hunters. She has stood with Ad Hoc Against Crime, championed victims' rights, sat in for civil rights, and fought for women's rights. She has served as the proud pastor of Community Fellowship of Jesus Christ for more than 20 years and is looking forward to many more. In the second part of our hour, Jaws of Justice host, Terri Wilke, and a new volunteer, Justice Johnson, will talk about the status of the Kansas City Missouri jail and the Jackson County jail. Listeners are aware that new jails are being built, staffed and filled. The community needs to be aware of the what is planned and consider how the job can best be accomplished. After all, we are paying for it. On Jaws of Justice, we examine how to find justice in our society. Justice will not be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those who are.
She threw up before every race. Now she's the fourth-fastest high school miler in American history.Ellery Lincoln is a Nike Elite junior from Lincoln High School in Portland, and her 4:30.00 at the 2026 Nike/Jesuit Twilight Relays didn't arrive as a surprise so much as an inevitability—the product of two years' worth of illness, setback, and a mantra she and her mom built together: consistency over perfection. In this episode, she and Dominic go deep on the story behind the fast times: the whooping cough that derailed her cross country season; the pneumonia that hit the day she landed in New York for Nike Indoor Nationals; and what it actually looks like to rebuild not just fitness but trust in a body that keeps letting you down. She also talks about committing to the University of Oregon (where Shalane Flannagan coaches and where her connection to Jerry Schumacher runs deeper than almost anyone's) and why she chose Eugene even though staying in-state wasn'talways the plan. She breaks down the pre-race anxiety that once had her vomiting before every race and how she worked through it; what it means to sit #4 all-time as a junior; and why her sightline is already past the high school record book and onto a professional career. The HOKA Festival of Miles is June 4th in St. Louis. She'll be there. So will Braelyn Combe, her best friend and the closest thing the high school mile has to a genuine rival right now. She's predicting sub-4:30 for the winner. For herself, she said 4:27.4.Tap into the Ellery Lincoln Special. If you enjoy the podcast, please consider following us on Spotify and Apple Podcasts and giving us a five-star review! On Saturday, a climate justice summit will take place at Lincoln High School in Southwest Portland. The event is free, open to the public and is being organized by students at Lincoln’s environmental justice class and students at Ida B. Wells’ Eco Action Club. It’s the first time students at the two PPS schools have collaborated to create a climate justice summit, according to Tim Swinehart, a Lincoln social studies teacher who launched the environmental justice course in 2016. Lincoln and Wells students will moderate a panel discussion at the summit and present workshops such as one on lobbying and giving testimony, which they did at the state legislature in Salem earlier this year and last December during a Portland Planning Commission meeting. The students also invited advocacy groups such as the Braided River Campaign, Sunrise Movement and Neighbors for Clean Air to give workshops on how to organize a protest and other topics. Lincoln High School senior Leah Almeida and Ida B. Wells High School junior Emma Lopez join us, along with Swinehart, for a preview of Saturday’s activities.

In this episode, Kyle sits down with Coach Jimmie Tyson, the new Defensive Coordinator at Dothan High School in Alabama. Coach Tyson brings over 20 years of coaching experience, including six years at Florida A&M University and nearly a decade as Defensive Coordinator at Lincoln High School in Tallahassee, one of the top programs in the state of Florida.Coach Tyson walks through how a post-practice conversation with his offensive coordinator changed the way he called defense, how studying Mike McDonald's work at Baltimore and Seattle led to building a coverage matrix, and how his staff developed a one-word call system that lets them run the same blitz path with completely different coverages week to week.Topics covered include non-traditional Tampa 2 with the nickel as the hole runner, dropping ends as hook players, disguising zero coverage while dropping into Tampa, changing assignments based on opponent tendencies, stem work, cadence reads, player buy-in through ownership of pressures, and why every player on the defense needs to understand every role.Coach Tyson also closes the show with two of the most unique things he has seen done at the program level, including a staff development system he brought from college and a team competition model at Dothan that produced 95 percent summer attendance last year.If you coach defense at any level, this one is worth your time. For more content, visit us at www.boarddrill.com.

Mark Rothko is known for his colorful abstract paintings of stacked rectangles with billowy borders and layered textures. His art has been auctioned for up to $186 million, but he once turned down a commission at a fancy restaurant because he felt his work wouldn’t be appreciated by the wealthy patrons there. He was raised in Portland and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1921. His first ever solo exhibition was at the Portland Art Museum, which is opening its Rothko Pavilion on November 20th. OPB Oregon Art Beat producer Eric Slade made a documentary about Rothko, and he joins us to explore what makes his work so special. The future of China-United States relations lies with young people, President Xi Jinping said in a recent reply to teachers and students of the US youth pickleball cultural exchange delegation from the US state of Maryland. In April, the delegation from public schools in Montgomery County, Maryland, visited China for pickleball exchanges as part of the initiative to invite 50,000 young Americans to China over a five-year span for exchange and study programs. The delegation later wrote a letter to Xi, thanking him for proposing the study and exchange initiative, which was first announced by Xi during his trip to the US in 2023.In the letter, the delegation members described their experiences during their visit to China and their participation in the pickleball exchange program. They said the trip enabled them to forge unforgettable friendships with their Chinese counterparts and that they hope to invite Chinese youths to visit the US.In his reply, Xi congratulated them on the success of their visit to China and said he is very happy to see pickleball become a new bond bridging the youths of China and the US. Xi said that he hopes the delegation members will become a new generation of ambassadors of friendship between the two nations and make greater contributions to enhancing the friendship between the two peoples.Pickleball, a rapidly growing sport in the US, is a hybrid of tennis, badminton and table tennis. From April 10 to 20, the delegation of 44 students and teachers from 13 schools in Montgomery County visited Shanghai, Shenzhen in Guangdong province, and Beijing, according to Xinhua News Agency. "Through pickleball, it is very easy to make friends. It's great for creating bonds that will last forever," Ryan Corkery, a student with the delegation, told Chinese reporters during the trip. "This journey has been amazing," he added. "We have tasted so many new foods, had so many new experiences, everything is just fantastic."Ian Harper, another student with the delegation, said: "It is awesome just seeing both how different everything here is and how much similar it is. I think both of those were really shocking to me. It has been just an incredible, life-changing, amazing, awesome experience."As part of his consistent support for China-US youth exchanges, President Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, replied on Jan 1 to a Chinese New Year greeting card from teachers and students of Lincoln High School in Tacoma, Washington, extending best wishes for the Year of the Dragon. Xie Feng, Chinese ambassador to the US, told a cultural event on Jan 11 that nearly 15,000 youths from all 50 US states and Washington, DC, had so far visited China under the initiative to invite 50,000 young Americans to China for exchanges. From Wednesday to July 18, Fuzhou, the capital of Fujian province, and Beijing will provide venues for the Bond with Kuliang: 2025 China-US Youth Choir Festival — another major China-US youth exchange event. The event is expected to bring together outstanding choirs from China and the US, including over 500 young people from US states including Utah, Washington and California.

Students from Sprague High School in Salem and Lincoln High School in Portland are co-champions of a national civics competition that tests students’ knowledge and understanding of the U.S. Constitution. But it’s how they won that has made this year’s “We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution National Finals” one for the history books. Sprague High School’s team consisted of just two members, seniors Matthew Meyers and Colin Williams. They won a spot at the national finals in Washington, D.C. after winning second place in the state competition in January, behind Lincoln High School. At the finals, Meyers and Williams faced off against teams with 20 or more players in the 3-day competition, fielding questions about constitutional law and Supreme Court cases from a panel of judges and legal experts. When the scores of all 32 teams were tallied, the duo from Salem were initially declared winners on April 11, with the Lincoln team finishing in third place. But according to reporting by The Oregonian and New York Times, Patrick Magee-Jenks, who teaches social studies at Lincoln High and coaches its constitution team, found what appeared to be a mistake in his team’s score. That prompted officials at The Center for Civic Competition, which organizes the annual competition, to investigate and correct the scoring results, with both Sprague and Lincoln High School prevailing as this year’s national champions. Meyers and Williams join us to talk about this remarkable outcome, along with Magee-Jenks and Audrey Farrimond, a junior at Lincoln High School and member of its constitution team.
Emily Wilson’s name on the cover of a book is a likely sign that it will be a bestseller. But she isn’t an author, and the books are unlikely fan favorites. While marking the arrival of 2025, students and teachers in the US state of Washington received a precious gift — a New Year card addressed to them with a message from President Xi Jinping and his wife, Peng Liyuan.Lynn Eisenhauer, a music teacher at Lincoln High School in Tacoma, Washington, said it is always a special experience to receive a message from President Xi, and they are glad to know that Xi and his wife received their latest greetings of good wishes. In mid-December, Eisenhauer joined students and teachers from local schools, as well as the US-China Youth and Student Exchange Association in Washington state, to send a New Year greeting card to President Xi and his wife, as well as the Chinese people.More than 100 teachers and students signed the card, on which was written in Chinese: "Commemorating the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the 80th anniversary of (the end of) the World Anti-Fascist War. Embracing the New Year, long live peace, and may China-US friendship last forever."David Chong, president of the US-China Youth and Student Exchange Association, said that "due to limited space, many friends couldn't fit their names on the card".He added that the reason the card mentioned the upcoming 80th anniversary of the victories in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1931-45) and the World Anti-Fascist War was because "we want the Chinese friends to know that the American people have not forgotten the history of the two nations fighting side by side".In the response card from the Chinese president, Xi and Peng said that during World War II, China and the United States fought together for peace and justice, and the friendship between the two peoples stood the test of blood and fire and is growing even stronger.Ella Martino, a student at Stadium High School in Tacoma, said: "Signing the greeting card for President Xi was an incredible honor and achievement. I, as an American student, want to express my gratitude for the friendship between America and China. I also wish for the longevity of peace between China and America."Brian Suy, a student at Lincoln High School in Tacoma, said of the World War II era: "I am familiar with this period of history and I believe that it is important for students to learn. I believe that this period of history should serve as a reminder for American and Chinese citizens that their countries can work together well, despite how different their cultures and politics are. I am willing to be a successor to keep the relations of the people of China and America strong and close."William Felagai, a student from Lincoln High School in Tacoma, said he "was very thankful and felt very lucky" to receive such a gift as a token of appreciation, and he also knows a little bit about that period of history."I attended a trip to Washington, DC, and was able to hear about the Sino-US friendship from a Flying Tigers veteran himself. He talked about how US soldiers and pilots found refuge in Chinese villagers who were willing to risk not only themselves and their families' lives but their whole village from destruction by the Japanese military," Felagai said.Maryn Sage, assistant principal of Stadium High School, said that this history and President Xi's reference to the Sino-US friendship being "tested by blood and fire" during World War II refers to the cooperation between China and the US as they fought a common enemy, despite their different political systems. "We believe that friendship is a way to foster mutual understanding and trust, reducing the likelihood of conflicts by promoting dialogue and cooperation," Sage said.In the card, Xi and Peng also extended their New Year wishes and expressed their hope that the young people of both countries will continue to participate in China's initiative of inviting 50,000 young people from the US over the course of five years to visit China for exchange and study programs, strengthen exchanges and interactions, enhance mutual understanding and carry forward the traditional friendship.Xi announced the initiative during his meeting with US President Joe Biden in San Francisco in 2023. Shannon Marshall, principal of Stadium High School, said that she accompanied 10 students to China in July last year, and in September, the school sent 12 students and an assistant principal."We would love to send more students in 2025 and are so thankful for the opportunities," Marshall added. "My group of 10 students who traveled to China in July recently met to reconnect and reminisce. The students spoke about the Chinese students they met and who they are still in contact with via WeChat. This experience has created long-lasting friendships between American students and Chinese students and bonded our American students together because they experienced a new culture together."Martino was among the 12 Stadium students who went to China for a two-week trip last year. She said she will never forget the people she met in China and the incredible impact they had on her life."I was most impressed by the hospitality I felt from the Chinese people I met. I made many Chinese friends. ... If I ever visit China again in the future, I wish to see my friends again and see the places that they care about the most," she said.Eisenhauer accompanied three groups of students from Lincoln High School on trips to China last year, and they were among the first groups to accept the invitation extended by President Xi to study and travel in China.Eisenhauer recalled that during their fall trip, they performed for Peng, and meeting the president's wife was a truly magical moment."I believe in the power of peaceful connections between people and cultures," Eisenhauer said. "Individual acts of kindness and friendship have the power to change the world in small but steady ways. I sincerely hope that the leadership of both our countries continue to encourage our youth to travel the globe and share their personal experiences and cultures with each other."Chong, the US-China Youth and Student Exchange Association president, said he knows of many people who hope for friendship between the two nations and are deeply concerned about the current state of US-China relations."There has never been just one voice in America. Through this, we hope to convey to the Chinese people the American public's desire for friendship between our two nations and their love for peace," Chong said.Ron Chow, co-chairman of the US-China Youth and Student Exchange Association, told China Daily: "We all agree that the US-China relationship is the most consequential bilateral relationship in the world. The future of our friendship lies in the hands of the younger generation. It is our association's mission to deepen dialogue and exchanges between the youth of the US and China, enabling more American young people to understand the real China, not just the one portrayed in the media."

We find out about her dreams and aspirations and why she chose a super sappy movie in the electric chair question.

In this episode, host Katie Martin talks with Melissa Agudelo, the co-principal of Lincoln High School in San Diego, about her experiences and insights as an educator and leader aimed at putting students at the center of learning. Melissa shares how she got into education through Teach for America in the 1990s and the impact of seeing disaggregated student data under No Child Left Behind, which made her question traditional approaches to teaching focused heavily on curriculum coverage versus relationships and relevance. She discusses her transformative experience teaching at High Tech High with project-based learning, but also her realization that those approaches weren't reaching all students, prompting her move to lead schools focused explicitly on serving learners who are furthest from opportunity. Key topics covered include: - Implementing restorative practices rather than zero-tolerance discipline - The importance of advisory structures to build relationships - Collaborative teacher development of projects and portfolio assessments - Iteratively developing a learner-centered culture and portrait of a graduate focused on broader competencies rather than content mastery - Melissa's vision for an education system that privileges authentic learning over grades and curriculum Whether you're an educator looking for insights on learner-centered strategies or simply interested in progressive approaches to transforming secondary schools, this discussion provides valuable perspectives.
