Oregon high school teams share first place honors at national civics competition

Students from Sprague High School in Salem and Lincoln High School in Portland are co-champions of a national civics competition that tests students’ knowledge and understanding of the U.S. Constitution. But it’s how they won that has made this year’s “We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution National Finals” one for the history books.  Sprague High School’s team consisted of just two members, seniors Matthew Meyers and Colin Williams. They won a spot at the national finals in Washington, D.C. after winning second place in the state competition in January, behind Lincoln High School.  At the finals, Meyers and Williams faced off against teams with 20 or more players in the 3-day competition, fielding questions about constitutional law and Supreme Court cases from a panel of judges and legal experts. When the scores of all 32 teams were tallied, the duo from Salem were initially declared winners on April 11, with the Lincoln team finishing in third place. But according to reporting by The Oregonian and New York Times, Patrick Magee-Jenks, who teaches social studies at Lincoln High and coaches its constitution team, found what appeared to be a mistake in his team’s score. That prompted officials at The Center for Civic Competition, which organizes the annual competition, to investigate and correct the scoring results, with both Sprague and Lincoln High School prevailing as this year’s national champions.   Meyers and Williams join us to talk about this remarkable outcome, along with Magee-Jenks and Audrey Farrimond, a junior at Lincoln High School and member of its constitution team.

While marking the arrival of 2025, students and teachers in the US state of Washington received a precious gift — a New Year card addressed to them with a message from President Xi Jinping and his wife, Peng Liyuan.Lynn Eisenhauer, a music teacher at Lincoln High School in Tacoma, Washington, said it is always a special experience to receive a message from President Xi, and they are glad to know that Xi and his wife received their latest greetings of good wishes. In mid-December, Eisenhauer joined students and teachers from local schools, as well as the US-China Youth and Student Exchange Association in Washington state, to send a New Year greeting card to President Xi and his wife, as well as the Chinese people.More than 100 teachers and students signed the card, on which was written in Chinese: "Commemorating the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the 80th anniversary of (the end of) the World Anti-Fascist War. Embracing the New Year, long live peace, and may China-US friendship last forever."David Chong, president of the US-China Youth and Student Exchange Association, said that "due to limited space, many friends couldn't fit their names on the card".He added that the reason the card mentioned the upcoming 80th anniversary of the victories in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1931-45) and the World Anti-Fascist War was because "we want the Chinese friends to know that the American people have not forgotten the history of the two nations fighting side by side".In the response card from the Chinese president, Xi and Peng said that during World War II, China and the United States fought together for peace and justice, and the friendship between the two peoples stood the test of blood and fire and is growing even stronger.Ella Martino, a student at Stadium High School in Tacoma, said: "Signing the greeting card for President Xi was an incredible honor and achievement. I, as an American student, want to express my gratitude for the friendship between America and China. I also wish for the longevity of peace between China and America."Brian Suy, a student at Lincoln High School in Tacoma, said of the World War II era: "I am familiar with this period of history and I believe that it is important for students to learn. I believe that this period of history should serve as a reminder for American and Chinese citizens that their countries can work together well, despite how different their cultures and politics are. I am willing to be a successor to keep the relations of the people of China and America strong and close."William Felagai, a student from Lincoln High School in Tacoma, said he "was very thankful and felt very lucky" to receive such a gift as a token of appreciation, and he also knows a little bit about that period of history."I attended a trip to Washington, DC, and was able to hear about the Sino-US friendship from a Flying Tigers veteran himself. He talked about how US soldiers and pilots found refuge in Chinese villagers who were willing to risk not only themselves and their families' lives but their whole village from destruction by the Japanese military," Felagai said.Maryn Sage, assistant principal of Stadium High School, said that this history and President Xi's reference to the Sino-US friendship being "tested by blood and fire" during World War II refers to the cooperation between China and the US as they fought a common enemy, despite their different political systems. "We believe that friendship is a way to foster mutual understanding and trust, reducing the likelihood of conflicts by promoting dialogue and cooperation," Sage said.In the card, Xi and Peng also extended their New Year wishes and expressed their hope that the young people of both countries will continue to participate in China's initiative of inviting 50,000 young people from the US over the course of five years to visit China for exchange and study programs, strengthen exchanges and interactions, enhance mutual understanding and carry forward the traditional friendship.Xi announced the initiative during his meeting with US President Joe Biden in San Francisco in 2023. Shannon Marshall, principal of Stadium High School, said that she accompanied 10 students to China in July last year, and in September, the school sent 12 students and an assistant principal."We would love to send more students in 2025 and are so thankful for the opportunities," Marshall added. "My group of 10 students who traveled to China in July recently met to reconnect and reminisce. The students spoke about the Chinese students they met and who they are still in contact with via WeChat. This experience has created long-lasting friendships between American students and Chinese students and bonded our American students together because they experienced a new culture together."Martino was among the 12 Stadium students who went to China for a two-week trip last year. She said she will never forget the people she met in China and the incredible impact they had on her life."I was most impressed by the hospitality I felt from the Chinese people I met. I made many Chinese friends. ... If I ever visit China again in the future, I wish to see my friends again and see the places that they care about the most," she said.Eisenhauer accompanied three groups of students from Lincoln High School on trips to China last year, and they were among the first groups to accept the invitation extended by President Xi to study and travel in China.Eisenhauer recalled that during their fall trip, they performed for Peng, and meeting the president's wife was a truly magical moment."I believe in the power of peaceful connections between people and cultures," Eisenhauer said. "Individual acts of kindness and friendship have the power to change the world in small but steady ways. I sincerely hope that the leadership of both our countries continue to encourage our youth to travel the globe and share their personal experiences and cultures with each other."Chong, the US-China Youth and Student Exchange Association president, said he knows of many people who hope for friendship between the two nations and are deeply concerned about the current state of US-China relations."There has never been just one voice in America. Through this, we hope to convey to the Chinese people the American public's desire for friendship between our two nations and their love for peace," Chong said.Ron Chow, co-chairman of the US-China Youth and Student Exchange Association, told China Daily: "We all agree that the US-China relationship is the most consequential bilateral relationship in the world. The future of our friendship lies in the hands of the younger generation. It is our association's mission to deepen dialogue and exchanges between the youth of the US and China, enabling more American young people to understand the real China, not just the one portrayed in the media."

Key topics covered include: - Implementing restorative practices rather than zero-tolerance discipline - The importance of advisory structures to build relationships - Collaborative teacher development of projects and portfolio assessments - Iteratively developing a learner-centered culture and portrait of a graduate focused on broader competencies rather than content mastery - Melissa's vision for an education system that privileges authentic learning over grades and curriculum Whether you're an educator looking for insights on learner-centered strategies or simply interested in progressive approaches to transforming secondary schools, this discussion provides valuable perspectives.

She was elected mayor in 2018. Woodards has called the “City of Destiny” her home for almost her entire life. She is a proud graduate of Tacoma's Lincoln High School and has served as a soldier in the United States Army. Before becoming mayor, she served for seven years as an at-large member of the City Council. During that time, she launched the city's Equity and Empowerment initiative which led to the establishment of its Office of Equity and Human Rights. She also brought partner organizations together for then-President Barack Obama's My Brother's Keeper initiative and spearheaded the city's Project PEACE initiative which bridged community members with the Tacoma Police Department. As mayor, she continues to be a champion of these important issues while expanding her involvement in regional and national conversations on affordable housing, transportation, strengthening youth and families, public safety, growing local business, and the creation of family wage jobs. She has also worked to more fully engage the city's youth in community decisions that impact them every day, by expanding Student Government Day and establishing the city's first Youth Commission. Woodards has been selected to serve in a number of national leadership roles that allow her to share information with other cities across the country and bring best practices back to Tacoma. In addition to her role as President, she has served as co-chair of both NLC's Council on Youth, Education, and Families and its Race, Equity and Leadership program. At the United States Conference of Mayors, she serves on the advisory board; as vice-chair of the Committee on Jobs, Education, and the Workforce; and as cochair of the Women Mayors Leadership Alliance. Some of her other leadership roles as Tacoma's mayor include positions on the Puget Sound Regional Council Executive Board, Sound Transit Board, Tacoma-Pierce County Economic Development Board, Pierce Transit Board, Foundation for Tacoma Students Board, and the Workforce Central Board. In partnership with County Executive Bruce Dammeier and County Council Member Connie Ladenburg, she also convened elected leaders from across Pierce County for Mayoral Roundtable to explore opportunities for regional collaboration on the issue of housing attainability in the region, an initiative that formally came to be known as the ‘South Sound Housing Affordability Partners.' Woodards has consistently reaffirmed her support for immigrant and refugee families, and Tacoma remains a welcoming city committed to providing immigrant and refugee communities with equitable access to City services. Alongside her peers on the City Council, she advocates for policies that provide safety and stability for all members of the community, and she uses her national leadership roles to join with mayors across the county in calling for federal reforms. Under her leadership, the city appointed members to its first Commission on Immigrant and Refugee Affairs. This commission was established to better engage with immigrant and refugee communities, and to work with local organizations to identify and advance positive outcomes for community members in need. Demonstrating a lifelong track record of public service, Woodards has served as president of the Tacoma Urban League and as director of community development for the Tacoma Rainiers. Her past civic engagement work has also included leadership positions with the Tacoma Metropolitan Parks Board, the Washington State History Museum, and the Washington State Commission of African American Affairs. Sage Whetnall has just graduated high school and completed her FFA career in Cardington, Ohio.  Now it is time for her get her education, and she knows where she is going to do that.......under the blue skies of Texas on the back of a horse! Sage and her family are very involved in the horse business from showing to rescuing to selling to rehabilitating.  As a matter of fact, Sage already is a certified equine massage therapist and wants to start her own business massaging horses in the future.  However, that future has to wait.  It has to wait for Sage to go on an adventure and to learn the real ins and outs of working on horseback.  Where better to learn that, than a cattle ranch in Texas. Texas Lore means a lot of things to a lot of people, but it is never without cattle.  It is either cattleman who became oilman, or oilman who bought cattle ranches.  Either way, cattle are always involved.  From Charles Goodnight and Oliver Loving to Woodrow Call and Augustus McRae, cattle are part of the story.  Where else is there a ranch called "King" that started its very own breed of cattle? Sage really believes in hands on knowledge and has a passion for horses, Western riding and Western work.  So, to get the experience and knowledge she needs to really understand how a performance or working horse is hurting and how to help it, she needs to see the work itself, up close and personal.  Her plan to get this education is to go to work, and to work in exactly that field. It is more than an adventure, it is a great way to learn!

The American Association of Retired Persons is the largest nonprofit group in the world with 38 million members. And it all began right here in Ojai in 1957 over dinner for six people at the Ojai Valley Inn. One of the persons was Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, a formidably tall redhead who changed the way the nation thought about aging. Craig Walker joins the podcast to talk about his recently published book, "The Dignity They Deserve" which he co-authored with Mark Lewis. As the title explains, Dr. Andrus, perhaps the first female high school principal in California, grew up in Chicago during the height of the Progressive Era, where she volunteered at Jane Addams' Hull House, before embarking on a career in education. She retired to Ojai and bought the Grey Gables and converted it into a residential facility for retired teachers. Her mission was to show that retired people had much to contribute to their world and communities. The lore is that she found a retired teacher living in abject poverty in a chicken coop. In her anger, she got organized. The AARP was founded to provide health insurance to retired teachers through the American Retired Teachers Association, which Dr. Andrus also established. It proved so wildly successful that the insurance broker, Leonard Davis, who helped set up the underwriting, soon became one of the 400 richest men in America. Dr. Andrus never personally profited off her organization. We talked about the Dr. Andrus' background, and her illustrious career at Lincoln High School, where she revolutionized the way high school was taught. Walker, a retired teacher himself, also talked about his father, the famous architect Rodney Walker, builder of several of the Case Study homes that helped house millions of people. We did not talk about Sumerian cuneiform, great Moghul empire warriors or the sketch comedy of Tim Robinson.

Former Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Jon Kitna proved during his football career to be a winner and a leader.  After playing three sports at Lincoln High School in Tacoma, Washington, Kitna walked on at Central Washington University (NAIA), earning the starting quarterback job as a true freshman. Kitna proved he was no fluke leading Central Washington to the NAIA Football National Championship his senior year. After earning a math education degree, Kitna was prepared to teach and coach at the high school level. But, instead, Dennis Erickson saw something in Kitna, signing him to the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted free agent in 1996. After being waived and signed to the Seahawks practice squad, Kitna was allocated to the World League of American Football and the Barcelona Dragons. It was here that Kitna showed he had the makings to play in the NFL and would play in the league with the Seahawks, Bengals, Detroit Lions, and Dallas Cowboys. However, after finishing his pro career, Kitna started the job he thought was his future all along, becoming a high school coach, the position he holds today as the new head coach at Liberty Township (Ohio) Lakota East High School, where he'll coach his youngest son, Jamison Kitna, a Class of 2025 quarterback prospect who already holds double-digit offers from the likes of Baylor, Duke, West Virginia, Pittsburgh and more. Kitna joined In The Trenches with Dave Lapham, presented by First Star Logistics, to discuss his career, including what may surprise many as his most significant achievement in the game, and respect he has for former teammate Carson Palmer and what he's seen so far from current Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow.

In this episode, Shellee and Matt discuss:The best time for families to start planning financially for collegeThe power of having college finances conversations with your teen Understanding college ROIThe book "Empty Nest Full Pockets" by Matt Key Takeaways: The sooner you begin the college application process and educate yourself, the better your investment accounts are likely to grow during those years which can help you pay for your child's college and graduate debt-free.Knowledge is power. Making smart financial decisions when looking for colleges begins with a clear understanding of the net cost of college and how financial aid works, and this can be achieved by having the college money talk with your teen.A college education is a huge investment regardless of your financial situation, so try a pre-approval plan to determine whether your family's investment in a degree or a college may yield a return on investment. Many parents are so focused on getting their children ready that they forget that they still have a life to live here. Make sure that you balance being involved in your children's lives with helping them become more independent, confident, and goal-oriented by preparing them financially, especially for paying for a part-time job and all the adulting stuff they have not done yet financially. “We can figure out the money, we can figure out how to get things to work financially. We might have to make some tough decisions, but it can be done. There's no reason to just throw up your hands and let them go to a school that's going to bankrupt the whole family - it's a time to really dig in and engage. You don't have to necessarily be the leader of the process, but you need to be a mentor and be part of it.”  —  Matt Meline  About Matt Meline: Matt is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of PrairieFire and husband to the Operations Manager, Lisa Meline.Matt founded PrairieFire in 2019 on the belief that financial planning and unbiased advice can only come from an independent, conflict-free team. Matt has dedicated his career to being a trusted resource, coach, and partner for clients and friends, securing proactively defending his clients' interests every day as his daily goal.In the midst of a period of transition in his life, Matt completed a unique program designed to rediscover core values and shift the planning focus from just the money to the life of the clients. This is the way he aims to improve both returns on investments and returns on life. With a specialty in helping families prepare for children leaving the nest, building an exciting empty nest lifestyle, and making the most of retirement, PFW excels at helping families achieve their financial goals in the second half of their lives.Matt loves the community of Des Moines. He attended Lincoln High School on Des Moines' south side after moving here from Omaha during his high school years. Following his graduation from the University of Northern Iowa, he worked primarily as a senior manager for various banking organizations throughout the Midwest. In the mid-1990s, he decided to leave the security of that job and pursue a full-time career as a financial planner. As parents of four children who are currently living their dream lives in Chicago, Denver, Rhode Island, and Ames, Iowa, Matt, along with his wife Lisa, knows a lot about the teen years and college preparation for kids.  Connect with Matt Meline:Website: https://www.prairiefirewealth.com/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mattmelinepfw/ Connect with Shellee Howard: Website:  https://collegereadyplan.com/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCr_WodPHDfSWEbiPdsRDbyQTwitter: https://twitter.com/gocollegereadyInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/collegereadyplan/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CollegeReadyPlan/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/college-ready/Email: shellee@collegereadyplan.com  Show notes by Podcastologist: Angelica Rayco. Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. When Mira Jacob's son was 6 years old, he started asking questions about what it meant to be biracial in America. And she found that answering those questions led to some interesting conversations. Jacob started keeping track of those conversations in a graphic memoir called “Good Talk.” The book is this year's Multnomah County Everybody Reads selection. We talk to Jacob in front of an audience at Lincoln High School. She'll also be speaking at the Arlene Schnitzer concert hall Thursday, March 10th at 7:30pm.

How I Got Here with Dave Fiore

In this episode, host Dave Fiore speaks with Ely Rosario, business manager at Jackson Properties. Ely's story is one of rising above circumstances and obstacles to achieve her dreams – no matter how unlikely they seemed at the time. After becoming pregnant during her senior year at Lincoln High School, she was told her life was over. She not only finished high school as a mom but went on to FSU and later earned an MBA. Ely says she was often caught in the middle of racial divides that had little room for Latinos. During one period, she was homeless, jobless and carless, but soon after pieced together enough funds to purchase multiple homes while making less than $40,000 a year. Ely is a triathlete, has qualified for the Boston Marathon and is a popular author and public speaker. But most important to her – she is a very proud mom of three who makes clear that they remain her priority.
