As the new school year begins, many parents and educators are thinking about how to create learning environments that truly support all children, regardless of their abilities. Whether you've already made decisions for your child's education or are still weighing your options, this episode will provide valuable insights.  Our guest, Sharon Lowery, is a pioneer in inclusive special education. She has developed a program that welcomes students of all abilities, with a focus on those who learn and think differently. Sharon's approach emphasizes the importance of meeting social-emotional needs and fostering an environment where every child can thrive.  In this conversation, Sharon shares what an inclusive academic setting looks like, how typically developing students and neurodiverse students can benefit from learning together, and why developing emotional intelligence is crucial in a child's education. We'll also address some common concerns parents have about balancing the needs of all students in an inclusive classroom. Please join us for “The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) Therapeutic Listening System: A Journey to Better Nervous System State Regulation” with Jennifer Abbanat, C-TSS, EXA-CE, SSP Provider. Jennifer is a parenting coach, Expressive Arts Educator, IEP advocate, Safe and Sound Protocol Provider, and trauma-informed consultant who uses neuro-affirming and trauma-informed approaches to empower families to make the most informed decisions that support their child's unique needs.   Jennifer has additional training in child development, including The Mehrit Centre ECE certificate program, a Certificate in Interpersonal Neurobiology (IPNB), and trauma-informed expressive arts approaches.  Jennifer has a Certificate in Traumatic Stress Studies from the Trauma Research Foundation with Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, has completed hundreds of hours of PD in areas of DIR Floortime, attachment theory, polyvagal theory, neuroscience, inclusive education, and is a graduate of the UC Davis LEND program for Leadership in Neurodevelopmental Education.  Jennifer is a volunteer for the Alliance Against Seclusion and Restraint and is an advocate to educate on the dangers of these practices and supporting legislation to protect students. Jennifer started her own advocacy and consulting business, Crow's Nest Advocacy & Consulting, where she provides a variety of services to support families through Expressive Arts Education, Safe and Sound Protocol therapeutic listening and individual and group parenting sessions to support the adults in the parent/child dyad. Jennifer has written several articles and blogs for organizations such as AASR and The Mehrit-Centre.  She is a founding member of a local organization, Yolo Neurodiverse Network (YNN), with 3 other parents with a mission to develop a culture of belonging and appreciation for neurodiversity by increasing community understanding, acceptance and engagement.  “Connecting individuals/ Connecting Caregivers / Connecting Communities” is what YNN hopes to bring. As an ND person herself, she is also a mom to three neurodivergent children, one of whom experienced early developmental trauma and is also autistic.  Jennifer believes in the value of lived experience and that we must learn to meet children where they are, not where we think they should be. Dr. Jennie Trocchio is an autism educator, speaker, Developmental Therapist, and Vice President of Clinical Operations at Positive Development. Positive Development's mission is to “…help people with autism and other developmental differences build connections and shape their futures.” Positive Development follows the Developmental Relationship-Based Intervention (DRBI) model. Jennie is a Maryland native located in sunny South Florida. With a Bachelor's from University of Miami in Special Education and Creative Writing and a Master's in Exceptional Student Education and Reading, Jennie worked in special education in Miami-Dade County Public Schools. During this time she developed a focus on autism and was introduced to DIR/Floortime approach. This model was put into practice at CasaBlanca Academy, a non-profit school for students with autism, where Jennie became the lead teacher, Director of Education and later the President of the Board of Directors. In 2013, Jennie graduated with a Ph.D. from Barry University in Special Education and Leadership with a focus in Autism. Her research included a collaboration with Dr. Rick Solomon, the Medical Director of the P.L.A.Y Project in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I speak to Dr. Mona about her book "Beyond Behaviors" that shifted the way I looked at parenting looking at behaviors as the tip of the iceberg and focusing on developing meaningful relationships. As parents we need to pay attention to the important signals that we should address by seeking to understand a child's individual differences in the context of relational safety. We also speak about DIR FloorTime and about bottom up and top down approaches and why there is no such thing as "Good" or Bad" behavior. Dr. Delahooke is a member of the American Psychological Association and holds the highest level of endorsement in the field of infant and toddler mental health in California, as a Reflective Practice Mentor (RPM). Hi everyone! Welcome back to another episode of the Punch Drunk Soul Podcast! I'm your host Ali Daniel. Today I have a friend and fellow coach, Kendra Delahooke on the show!    Kendra is also a licensed marriage and family therapist who now specializes in parent coaching and helping children overcome anxiety and related challenges. She loves supporting families to make parenting easier and more enjoyable. She has completed training in DIR Floortime, somatic, and trauma therapies which we start to dive into on this episode and how Kendra uses her training and knowledge of these practices in her coaching business. As her coaching business has started to take off in the last year, Kendra has also had the opportunity to start speaking and presenting to parents at schools, conferences and even other major companies like Snapchat about her work.    I'm thrilled to share this episode with you guys because we get into some practical tools you can use to calm your anxiety, cast out fear, and break out of the small life you've been conditioned to pursue.    Kendra shares how she was able to overcome a lot of her fear and anxiety around teaching and being a coach by getting in touch with her WHY and how the enneagram has helped her understand her inherent tendencies and break through her perceived barriers.    We also dive into each person's individual wiring and how it affects how we perceive situations differently and why some people are afraid of crowds while others aren't and how we can start to use the way we're wired to manage stress, anxiety, fear and so on.    Kendra and I both relate to being 9's on the enneagram and how through our businesses we've been able to heal and fulfill our unmet childhood needs - which for the both of us happens to be not being “seen.”   What I love about this episode is it gives us a full well-rounded view of how our bodies are emotional, physical, mental systems and that understanding each part will help us function more fully as a whole and have more success. Join our host Dr. Gil Tippy as he explains DIR Floortime.   Dr Tippy is the co-author of Respecting Autism with Dr. Stanley Greenspan and the founder of The Rebecca School in New York City. The DIR Floortime model was developed by Dr. Stanley Greenspan and first outlined in 1979 in his book Intelligence and Adaptation. The Developmental, Individual-difference, Relationship-based (DIR) model is the formal name for a new, comprehensive, individualized approach to assess and treat children who have developmental delays (including Autism Spectrum Disorder). Focusing on the building blocks of healthy development, this approach is also referred to as the “Floortime” approach. However, Floortime is actually a strategy within the DIR model that emphasizes the creation of emotionally meaningful learning exchanges that encourage developmental abilities. The goal of treatment within the DIR model is to build foundations for healthy development rather than to work only on the surface of symptoms and behaviors. Here, children learn to master critical abilities that may have been missed along their developmental track. For example, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has three core/primary problems: (1) establishing closeness, (2) using emerging words or symbols with emotional intent, and (3) exchanging emotional gestures in a continuous way. Secondary symptoms (perseveration, sensory-processing problems, etc.) may also exist. Thus, treatment options are based on particular underlying assumptions. The DIR model is based on the assumption that the core developmental foundations for thinking, relating, and communicating can be favorably influenced by work with children's emotions and their effects.

This week Dr Gil Tippy interviews 3 special educators using an appropriate, developmental, sensory sensitive approach in public and private education settings for kids with neuro-developmental disorders of relating and communicating. The discussion ranges from the tremendous success of a couple of Vermont public school teachers in their use of the DIR/Floortime model, through our success at the Rebecca School in our Fairytale Literacy curriculum, and even touches on the complications of the Common Core Standards, and what it means for our children. Kathryn Byrne Grossarth is a Special Educator in a small public school in Wells, VT. She attended a conference in Vermont this past summer that Rae Leeper and I put on, explaining how to do a relationship based model in a public school setting. She has implemented DIR in her public school with tremendous success. She is using Rae's literacy suggestions and is finding that it is really working. She is working on creating curriculum and texts, and is passionate about the tremendous change she has seen in her kids, and herself in just the first four months of this school year.Barbara Festa is a Special Education Supervisor in Wells, VT. She did not attend the training, but Kathryn's enthusiasm has been so infectious that she began to use the model in her math curriculum, to great results. She sees that DIR/Floortime is directly in line with the Common Core Standards.Rae Leeper is the Education Supervisor at the Rebecca School, and did the training with me that inspired these two Vermont Special Educators. She has been at the Rebecca School from the very beginning, and instrumental in creating and supervising our classroom curriculum.
