Film festivals typically, but not always, feature films that will hardly ever play at your local metroplex. Yet is possible, though again not always, to be fans of both mainstream and festival films. On this week's show, Dan Webster, Nathan Weinbender and Mary Pat Treuthart discuss the latest Hollywood wannabe blockbuster, “The Devil Wears Prada 2,” and then reveal what they expect from the 52nd Seattle International Film Festival, which kicks off May 7th.
The animated short film ‘Tulip’ opens as many stories do - with "once upon a time." The tale might sound familiar. It begins with a woman finding a tiny baby girl, curled up at the center of a blooming flower. Soon, Tulip climbs out her window and sets off on an adventure in her own backyard – meeting the many creatures that call it home as she tries to find her way back to her own. The film is a take on the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale Thumbelina. Each scene is awash in bright colors and textures. Every part of Tulip - from the characters to the sets and backgrounds - is made by hand, most of it in felt, and brought to life using the time-intensive technique of stop motion animation. And the lush, green backgrounds may look familiar - the co-directors behind the film are based here in Western Washington. Tulip was originally released in 2020. It screened at film festivals like the Annecy International Animation Festival and the Seattle International Film Festival. Now, for the first time, anyone can watch the short on YouTube. Guests: Andrea Love is a stop motion animator based in Port Townsend. She was co-director for Tulip, and also headed up fabrication & animation. Phoebe Wahl is an illustrator and children’s book author based in Bellingham. She was the co-director, lead set and character designer, and script writer for Tulip. In early October, film buffs around the region received some bittersweet news… The historic Egyptian Theater in Capitol Hill – which had been closed for repairs – would not reopen as a public theater. The Seattle International Film Festival decided to end its lease, saying it was a difficult decision but that it just wasn’t financially feasible. Feliks Banel's guest on this BONUS EPISODE of CASCADE OF HISTORY is Tom Tangney, retired former Seattle journalist and broadcaster, longtime local cinephile - and all around gadfly. The Seattle International Film Festival – or SIFF - announced on October 9, 2025 that they are ending their lease of the Egyptian Theatre on Seattle's Capitol Hill. The theatre, which was built as a Masonic Temple around 1916, belongs to Seattle Central College. It's unclear what's next for the structure, which has not been officially recognized as a historic landmark. Still, it has served as a movie theatre for decades, and was key to growth of Seattle as a center of movie-going, and to the development of the SIFF. Tom Tangney worked at the Egyptian in the 1980s, and has paid attention to Seattle cinemas and cinephiles for decades. The Context of White Supremacy welcomes David Fritz Fortune. A Morehouse College graduate, filmmaker, and proud resident of Atlanta, Mr. Fortune uses art to share refreshing portraits about black people resisting Racism in different ways. Gus T. immersed in this year's Seattle International Film Festival and caught about three dozens films. Almost all of them focused explicitly on the global System of White Supremacy. There were so many films at the 51st SIFF, Gus nearly missed Mr. Fortune's COLOR BOOK, which touchingly examines being a black father in Atlanta. After the sudden loss of a black mother and wife, Mr. Fortune captures the bond and grief shared between a black father, played by Will Catlett, and his son, portrayed by Jeremiah Daniels. COLOR BOOK showcases a black parent raising a child with disabilities and the daily impediments - like parenting while black and without a car - to living in metro Atlanta. We'll ask Mr. Fortune why he wanted to showcase this black father/son relationship and if intentionally made a film without White characters. Acknowledgements to the late Roy Ayers and Mr. Fortune's late father. #SIFF2025 INVEST in The COWS - http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: http://cash.app/$TheCOWS

Gus T. continues his cinematic odyssey through the 2025 Seattle International Film Festival. He had the pleasure of viewing the New Zealand film TINÃ, and then filmmaker Miki Magasiva and actor Beulah Koale were generous enough to share a bit of their time and insight with Gus while visiting North America. We discussed the challenges that Samoan filmmakers face in New Zealand and why Magasiva helped create The Brown Factory. Gus made a colossal error, originally thinking Anapela Polataivao's character lost her daughter during the 2019 Racist massacre at Christchurch. In the film, her daughter is one of the nearly 200 victims of the 2011 earthquake in the same region. This notwithstanding, the System of White Supremacy is a major theme of the film, and Magasiva and Beulah detail how this film honestly reflects the racial power dynamics of New Zealand in 2025. They each shared with Gus that although there are few people classified as black in New Zealand, the non-white people native to the area are routinely targeted with anti-black racist abuse. We also make time for critical dialog on mental health and suicide. Male mental health. #MoReading #Kiwi INVEST in The C.O.W.S. - https://cash.app/$TheCOWS #TheCOWS16Years CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#
Gus T. Renegade returns as a credentialed journalist to the 51st annual Seattle International Film Festival. Friday was the first official day of the event, and Gus kicked off the fancy television viewing with 3 feature length films and one collection of shorts. All of the films Gus reviewed were directly connected to the Global System of White Supremacy. Neely Fuller Jr.'s native land of Muskogee, Oklahoma was mentioned during the discussing of the documentary film, DROWNED LAND, which examines the history of White Supremacy against Choctaw "indians" and how Whites polluted most of natural waters in Oklahoma. This film included a snippet about the Choctaw owning black slaves in Greenwood, Mississippi, and these "red" people took their black property with them to Oklahoma on the "Trail of Tears." Gus engaged in a fascinating exchange about this anti-black history with Choctaw filmmaker Colleen Thurston. Prior to this constructive film and exchange, Gus was forced to endure the contempt for gender in the short film "Saturn Risin9," which features an "LGBTQ" black person with bleached eyebrows who was likely classified as a male at birth. He does mention Racism as a problem well after he identifies as "queer." Gus also saw Danielle Deadwyler star in the Canadian science fiction thriller 40 ACRES, which imagines a future where black and non-white people are under assault from Racist(?) cannibals. Seattle is known for its unique climate, with rain over extended periods rather than concentrated bursts. The city is also surrounded by water, with Puget Sound to the west and Lake Washington to the east. With high housing prices and rental fees, Seattle's living cost is approximately 50% higher than the national average. However, the city has a vibrant food scene and is LGBTQ-friendly, with inclusive community centers and events like Pride. Seattle offers a vibrant arts and culture scene, with symphonies, ballets, operas, art museums, and Broadway touring companies. Burlesque shows are also popular in the city. Seattle hosts the Seattle International Film Festival, one of the largest film festivals in the country. The city has a commuter-based transit system, with light rail and buses, but having a car in certain areas may be necessary. Co-starring Julie Benz and Carter Jenkins, the film is a bizarre mashup of 12 Angry Men and The Twilight Zone, where a room full of 50 strangers realize they control who will be the ultimate survivor. The high-stakes setup of the game within the film led to a heated cross-section discourse of the human conditions and all the hot-button issues dominating the early twenty-first century headlines. CIRCLE was screened at the 2015 San Diego Comic-Con and Savannah Film Festival, and the 2015 Seattle International Film Festival highlighted the film as a part of its Catalyst program, highlighting exciting new filmmakers. In 2019, Michael produced and starred in Amazon Prime Video's Dark/Web. The series focused on a genius programmer's mysterious disappearance, which led to the reunion of old friends. The discovery of strange stories she left behind may indicate an impending technological crisis. The series earned three Emmy Award nominations. On this episode of The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, Michael Nardelli spoke about the upcoming sequel of CIRCLE and being Emmy-nominated for Dark/Web.Let's connect on social media! On this episode, I spoke to directors Emily Kassie and Julian Brave NoiseCat about their work on Sugarcane. The film premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, where the film won the Directing Award in the U.S. Documentary category. The film has since gone on to multiple festivals and won awards at the San Francisco International Film Festival, the Seattle International Film Festival and the Sarasota Film Festival. Just to name a few, and surely not the last. The film is now open in select theaters. **** MORE ABOUT SUGARCANE: A stunning tribute to the resilience of Native people and their way of life - SUGARCANE, the debut feature documentary from Julian Brave NoiseCat and Emily Kassie - is an epic cinematic portrait of a community during a moment of international reckoning. Set amidst a ground-breaking investigation into abuse and death at an Indian residential school, the film empowers participants to break cycles of intergenerational trauma by bearing witness to painful, long-ignored truths – and the love that endures within their families despite the revelation of genocide. In 2021, evidence of unmarked graves near an Indian residential school run by the Catholic Church in Canada sparked a national outcry about the forced separation, assimilation, and abuse many children experienced at this network of segregated boarding schools designed to slowly destroy the culture and social fabric of Indigenous communities. When Kassie- a journalist and filmmaker- asked her old friend and colleague, NoiseCat, to direct a film documenting the Williams Lake First Nation investigation of St Joseph's Mission, she never imagined just how close this story was to his own family. As the investigation continued, Emily and Julian traveled back to the rivers, forests and mountains of his homelands to hear the myriad stories of survivors. During production, Julian's own story became an integral part of this beautiful multi-stranded portrait of a community. By offering space, time, and profound empathy the directors unearthed what was hidden. Kassie and NoiseCat encountered both the extraordinary pain these individuals had to suppress as a tool for survival and the unique beauty of a group of people finding the strength to persevere. The C.O.W.S. Neutralizing Workplace Racism 05/31/24. Gus finally sits his hindparts down from two weeks of sprinting to the Seattle International Film Festival and the Travessias Brazilian Film Festival 2024. All the festivities caused minor adjustments to our most recent broadcasts of Neutralizing Workplace Racism - which included a black male underwater welder. He encouraged more black people to pursue a trade in this industry and to expect White Supremacist conduct from your fellow White welders. Obviously, this sort of job would require one to learn how to swim. We'll also discuss a massive class action lawsuit against Elon Musk's California Tesla factory. Reports indicate that over the span of about a decade, Tesla employees “heard the N-word and otherwise experienced conditions that might reasonably be characterized as race harassment." We'll also pay attention to new programs aimed at training black students for Artificial Intelligence jobs. Georgia, black males were trained and "hyped" to land high-paying jobs working on EV charging stations. Now, only 16% of the program participants have found EV charging employment. Best they can do is hope. #Whistleblower #TheCOWS15Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#
Gus T. finally caught his breath after attending the 50th annual Seattle International Film Festival. Gus has lived in the Seattle region for well over a decade and is embarrassed to say this is the first time I've attended the event in any capacity. Making up for lost time, Gus T. applied for and received journalist credentials for the event and set about some serious TV-watching. There were over 260 films on display for the 2 week festival, and Gus was excited to check out a variety of flicks from around the globe. After a grueling stretch of popcorn munching and note-taking in darkened theaters, Gus is ready to discuss his #SIFFTY experience, the 17 films he caught during the event, and the fascinating chats with filmmakers from around the world. Soundtrack to a Coup d'Etat was the best of many amazing films. Luther: Never Too Much and The Battle for Laikipia were also extraordinary documentaries that reveal much about the System of White Supremacy. 1. Soundtrack to a Coup d'Etat

Renegade remains exhausted from the 50th annual 2024 Seattle International Film Festival. Gus saw 17 films, and nearly every single one was directly about White Supremacy/Racism. For those not watching television, non-white people in the Congo announced a failed coup attempt that allegedly involved US citizens - some of them classified as White. This stunned Gus as the best film of the #SIFF2024 was Soundtrack to a Coup d'Etat - which examines how Whites around the world conspired to assassinate Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba and lied about having done so. In fact, this stunning documentary includes a current critique of billion dollar conglomerate Apple's mining operations in the very same Congo. In the midst of the failed coup lawyers announced they have further evidence of Apple's corrupt practices extracting the mineral wealth of Africa - which is what Whites have done on the continent for centuries. #SoundtrackToACoupdEtat#TheCOWS INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#

They had a wealth of speakers to address health and well being of non-white people and the debilitating impact of Racism. They did not provide a definition of Racism. There were no black males in attendance, hardly any non-white males in attendance, there was only 1 non-white male speaker on a roster of 12, and no one addressed any issues that black and non-white males experience. The Context of White Supremacy hosts the weekly forum on Neutralizing Workplace Racism 05/17/24 Gus T. Renegade made time to host this week's broadcast in spite of being a credentialed member of the press for the 50th annual Seattle International Film Festival. Gus has been in Seattle for well over a decade, and never made an effort to visit the festival. Thankfully, Gus filled out the application for a "press pass" months ago. Non-white people should seek out training and/or other resources/events to promote your brand, add to your résumé, and/or learn new skills. Festivals like this can be phenomenal opportunities to meet talented people from around the globe who can help develop or "jumpstart" your career. We also get an update from our beloved "Tumblin' Dice," who was wrongly accused of "menacing" his White coworkers when he questioned their consistently Racist and unsafe behavior. His White colleagues deceitfully claimed that they fled the building in fear of their lives and "Tumblin' Dice's" negro wrath We also remind Victims of Racism that maintaining employment might require your attendance at non-work related function from time to time. The 2023 Seattle International Film Festival was held on May 11-21. Ron was able to receive press credentials and had the opportunity to check out several short films and a few features. One of my favorite films at SIFF was the short horror film Let It Kill You directed by David Cornue and starring Adam Bucci and Adam Hess. The film tells the story of a disaffected American soldier asserts to his superiors that an enemy combatant is innocent, only to discover his new friend may be concealing a far more sinister secret. I was amazed by all aspects of this film: the directing, cinematography, acting, script, special effects (practical and CGI). Clearly, there is great focus and passion for this project. The goal is for this short to become a feature film and I hope we all have a chance to see it soon!Let It Kill You Official Web Sitehttps://www.davidcornue.com/letitkillyouWritten and Directed by David CornueProducer/Actor Adam BucciProducer/Actor: Adam HussProducer Milena GovichOriginal Music by David CornueLet It Kill You IMDBhttps://www.imdb.com/title/tt15777136/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1Let It Kill You (2023 Seattle International Film Festival)https://www.siff.net/festival/let-it-kill-youMolecule Productions Instagramhttps://www.instagram.com/molecule_productionsMusicTheme from Let It Kill You composed by David CornueCourtesy of David CornueThe Wrath of the iOtiansEmail: thewrathoftheiotians@gmail.comInstagram: thewrathoftheiotiansTwitter: @OfiOtiansWebsite: https://thewrathoftheiotians.buzzsprout.com/
