Gus T. continues his cinematic odyssey through the 2025 Seattle International Film Festival. He had the pleasure of viewing the New Zealand film TINÃ, and then filmmaker Miki Magasiva and actor Beulah Koale were generous enough to share a bit of their time and insight with Gus while visiting North America. We discussed the challenges that Samoan filmmakers face in New Zealand and why Magasiva helped create The Brown Factory. Gus made a colossal error, originally thinking Anapela Polataivao's character lost her daughter during the 2019 Racist massacre at Christchurch. In the film, her daughter is one of the nearly 200 victims of the 2011 earthquake in the same region. This notwithstanding, the System of White Supremacy is a major theme of the film, and Magasiva and Beulah detail how this film honestly reflects the racial power dynamics of New Zealand in 2025. They each shared with Gus that although there are few people classified as black in New Zealand, the non-white people native to the area are routinely targeted with anti-black racist abuse. We also make time for critical dialog on mental health and suicide. Male mental health. #MoReading #Kiwi INVEST in The C.O.W.S. - https://cash.app/$TheCOWS #TheCOWS16Years CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#

Gus T. Renegade returns as a credentialed journalist to the 51st annual Seattle International Film Festival. Friday was the first official day of the event, and Gus kicked off the fancy television viewing with 3 feature length films and one collection of shorts. All of the films Gus reviewed were directly connected to the Global System of White Supremacy. Neely Fuller Jr.'s native land of Muskogee, Oklahoma was mentioned during the discussing of the documentary film, DROWNED LAND, which examines the history of White Supremacy against Choctaw "indians" and how Whites polluted most of natural waters in Oklahoma. This film included a snippet about the Choctaw owning black slaves in Greenwood, Mississippi, and these "red" people took their black property with them to Oklahoma on the "Trail of Tears." Gus engaged in a fascinating exchange about this anti-black history with Choctaw filmmaker Colleen Thurston. Prior to this constructive film and exchange, Gus was forced to endure the contempt for gender in the short film "Saturn Risin9," which features an "LGBTQ" black person with bleached eyebrows who was likely classified as a male at birth. He does mention Racism as a problem well after he identifies as "queer." Gus also saw Danielle Deadwyler star in the Canadian science fiction thriller 40 ACRES, which imagines a future where black and non-white people are under assault from Racist(?) cannibals. He fell in love with the city after visiting for Thanksgiving in 1988 and has lived there ever since. Seattle is known for its unique climate, with rain over extended periods rather than concentrated bursts. The city is also surrounded by water, with Puget Sound to the west and Lake Washington to the east. With high housing prices and rental fees, Seattle's living cost is approximately 50% higher than the national average. However, the city has a vibrant food scene and is LGBTQ-friendly, with inclusive community centers and events like Pride. Seattle offers a vibrant arts and culture scene, with symphonies, ballets, operas, art museums, and Broadway touring companies. Burlesque shows are also popular in the city. Seattle hosts the Seattle International Film Festival, one of the largest film festivals in the country. The city has a commuter-based transit system, with light rail and buses, but having a car in certain areas may be necessary. Healthcare in Seattle is excellent, with multiple hospitals and a high number of LGBT doctors. The state of Washington does not have an income tax, which benefits retirees, and property taxes can vary depending on the location and value of the property. Seattle has high property taxes and sales tax, which fund government services. Crime rates vary by neighborhood, but systemic racism within the police department is a problem. Due to high housing costs, Seattle has a significant homeless population. The city provides some services and housing options for the homeless, but it's insufficient. Seattle is known for its laid-back culture, acceptance of the LGBTQ+ community, and beautiful natural surroundings. However, the city experiences gloomy winters and is prone to earthquakes and volcanic activity.

It is a privilege to welcome actor, filmmaker, and producer Michael Nardelli to The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast.   Michael made his professional acting debut as Stradivarius Helberg on the TV show Quintuplets. He then co-starred in the independent film The Derby Stallion opposite Zac Efron and the comedy Grassroots with Jason Biggs. Soon after, Michael portrayed a lovesick teenager in the 3-D horror film The Collective. He also had recurring roles on TV series such as American Crime Story: The People versus OJ Simpson, Hart of Dixie, My Name is Earl, Nashville, and Revenge.  When Michael is not on television, he is behind the camera. As an independent film producer, Michael produced the Sundance Film Festival Award-winning Another Happy Day, which starred Demi Moore, Ezra Miller, and Kate Bosworth and the Tribeca Film Festival selected The Giant Mechanical Man, which starred Jenna Fischer, Topher Grace, Malin Akerman, and Bob Odenkirk.   Michael Nardelli became a household name when he produced and starred as Eric in the 2015 Netflix science fiction horror film CIRCLE. Co-starring Julie Benz and Carter Jenkins, the film is a bizarre mashup of 12 Angry Men and The Twilight Zone, where a room full of 50 strangers realize they control who will be the ultimate survivor. The high-stakes setup of the game within the film led to a heated cross-section discourse of the human conditions and all the hot-button issues dominating the early twenty-first century headlines. CIRCLE was screened at the 2015 San Diego Comic-Con and Savannah Film Festival, and the 2015 Seattle International Film Festival highlighted the film as a part of its Catalyst program, highlighting exciting new filmmakers.  In 2019, Michael produced and starred in Amazon Prime Video's Dark/Web. The series focused on a genius programmer's mysterious disappearance, which led to the reunion of old friends. On this episode, I spoke to directors Emily Kassie and Julian Brave NoiseCat about their work on Sugarcane.  The film premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, where the film won the Directing Award in the U.S. Documentary category. The film has since gone on to multiple festivals and won awards at the San Francisco International Film Festival, the Seattle International Film Festival and the Sarasota Film Festival. Just to name a few, and surely not the last.   The film is now open in select theaters.  **** MORE ABOUT SUGARCANE: A stunning tribute to the resilience of Native people and their way of life - SUGARCANE, the debut feature documentary from Julian Brave NoiseCat and Emily Kassie - is an epic cinematic portrait of a community during a moment of international reckoning. Set amidst a ground-breaking investigation into abuse and death at an Indian residential school, the film empowers participants to break cycles of intergenerational trauma by bearing witness to painful, long-ignored truths – and the love that endures within their families despite the revelation of genocide.  In 2021, evidence of unmarked graves near an Indian residential school run by the Catholic Church in Canada sparked a national outcry about the forced separation, assimilation, and abuse many children experienced at this network of segregated boarding schools designed to slowly destroy the culture and social fabric of Indigenous communities. When Kassie- a journalist and filmmaker- asked her old friend and colleague, NoiseCat, to direct a film documenting the Williams Lake First Nation investigation of St Joseph's Mission, she never imagined just how close this story was to his own family. As the investigation continued, Emily and Julian traveled back to the rivers, forests and mountains of his homelands to hear the myriad stories of survivors. During production, Julian's own story became an integral part of this beautiful multi-stranded portrait of a community. By offering space, time, and profound empathy the directors unearthed what was hidden. Kassie and NoiseCat encountered both the extraordinary pain these individuals had to suppress as a tool for survival and the unique beauty of a group of people finding the strength to persevere. The C.O.W.S. Neutralizing Workplace Racism 05/31/24. Gus finally sits his hindparts down from two weeks of sprinting to the Seattle International Film Festival and the Travessias Brazilian Film Festival 2024. All the festivities caused minor adjustments to our most recent broadcasts of Neutralizing Workplace Racism - which included a black male underwater welder. He encouraged more black people to pursue a trade in this industry and to expect White Supremacist conduct from your fellow White welders. Obviously, this sort of job would require one to learn how to swim. We'll also discuss a massive class action lawsuit against Elon Musk's California Tesla factory. Reports indicate that over the span of about a decade, Tesla employees “heard the N-word and otherwise experienced conditions that might reasonably be characterized as race harassment." We'll also pay attention to new programs aimed at training black students for Artificial Intelligence jobs. Georgia, black males were trained and "hyped" to land high-paying jobs working on EV charging stations. Now, only 16% of the program participants have found EV charging employment. Gus T. finally caught his breath after attending the 50th annual Seattle International Film Festival. Gus has lived in the Seattle region for well over a decade and is embarrassed to say this is the first time I've attended the event in any capacity. Making up for lost time, Gus T. applied for and received journalist credentials for the event and set about some serious TV-watching. There were over 260 films on display for the 2 week festival, and Gus was excited to check out a variety of flicks from around the globe. After a grueling stretch of popcorn munching and note-taking in darkened theaters, Gus is ready to discuss his #SIFFTY experience, the 17 films he caught during the event, and the fascinating chats with filmmakers from around the world. Soundtrack to a Coup d'Etat was the best of many amazing films. Luther: Never Too Much and The Battle for Laikipia were also extraordinary documentaries that reveal much about the System of White Supremacy. 1. Soundtrack to a Coup d'Etat

For those not watching television, non-white people in the Congo announced a failed coup attempt that allegedly involved US citizens - some of them classified as White. This stunned Gus as the best film of the #SIFF2024 was Soundtrack to a Coup d'Etat - which examines how Whites around the world conspired to assassinate Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba and lied about having done so. Gus has been in Seattle for well over a decade, and never made an effort to visit the festival. Thankfully, Gus filled out the application for a "press pass" months ago. Non-white people should seek out training and/or other resources/events to promote your brand, add to your résumé, and/or learn new skills. Festivals like this can be phenomenal opportunities to meet talented people from around the globe who can help develop or "jumpstart" your career. "Once you get there, don't forget to grab someone's hand and bring them with you." In this episode we're joined by two guests who focus our lens on the healing power of authentic mentorship, where you learn as much as you impart.   The mentor: Megan Garbayo-López is a Queer Latina filmmaker, film educator, and film programmer with SIFF. She works with Seattle-area schools to mentor youth and introduce the art of filmmaking, while fostering pathways to self expression and careers in the film industry. Growing up neurodivergent in a mixed-race family 'in between spaces', Megan experienced food scarcity and childhood sexual abuse, where she 'lost her body' and eventually struggled with eating disorders, anxiety and depression. After a journey of healing through inpatient treatment, EMDR therapy and trauma work, she's now a mentor on a mission to be the adult that she needed as a kid.   The mentee: Kelbi Maldonado is a super-senior at Scriber Lake High School, who was mentored by Megan and recently interned with the Seattle International Film Festival. As a young Queer person struggling with intense isolation during the pandemic, they experienced anxiety and suicidal ideation without the language to explain what was going on inside of them. Co-dependency with marijuana became a coping mechanism which temporarily saved them but also negatively impacted their mental health by suppressing emotions to the point they were no longer feeling anything. Ron was able to receive press credentials and had the opportunity to check out several short films and a few features.  One of my favorite films at SIFF was the short horror film Let It Kill You directed by David Cornue and starring Adam Bucci and Adam Hess. The film tells the story of a disaffected American soldier asserts to his superiors that an enemy combatant is innocent, only to discover his new friend may be concealing a far more sinister secret. I was amazed by all aspects of this film: the directing, cinematography, acting, script, special effects (practical and CGI). Clearly, there is great focus and passion for this project. Often when we think of cinema, the first places that come to mind are New York or Los Angeles. But did you know that hundreds of films and television shows are set in cities around the Pacific Northwest? From popular series like Twin Peaks to blockbuster book adaptations like Twilight, culture writer David Schmader's new book Filmlandia!: A Movie Lovers Guide to the Films and Television of Seattle, Portland, and the Great Northwest highlights more than 200 film and television entertainments created and centered in our region. Extensively researched and curated by Schmader, Filmlandia! explores the oft-overlooked film culture of The Pacific Northwest. The author shows a culture that is thriving and robust, one that is finally given space to be celebrated in a guide that aims to be visually arresting and compelling – much like the films themselves. Classics like Sleepless in Seattle are discussed, but so are little-known documentaries, including multiple about Nirvana legend Kurt Cobain. Schmader put in a lot of screen time and research for this release, resulting result is over 200 TV and film entries that feature synopses (with healthy doses of levity and insight), behind-the-scene facts and trivia, and regional scenic highlights. Sidebars showcase the television shows that shaped the public's perception of the region (such as Twin Peaks, Shrill, and Portlandia), filmmakers like Gus Van Sant and Lynn Shelton, queer cinema, silent films, and more. This is a talk for any cinephile or anyone with a curiosity about a lesser-known aspect of Pacific Northwest culture! David Schmader is a writer and performer devoted to exploring his obsessions, from homophobic rock stars and pray-away-the-gay Christians to trash cinema and legalized drugs. His solo plays have been performed in theaters across the US. From 1998–2015, Schmader was staff writer and editor for Seattle's Pulitzer-winning newsweekly The Stranger, where he wrote the issue-opening column “Last Days: The Week in Review.” He is the world's foremost authority on the glorious terribleness of the movie Showgirls, hosting annotated screenings of Paul Verhoeven's notorious stripper drama at cinemas all over North America and providing the commentary track for the Showgirls DVD. He is the author of Filmlandia: A Movie Lover's Guide to the Films and Television of Seattle, Portland, and The Great Northwest and Weed: The User's Guide, published by Sasquatch Books. Kathy Fennessy is a Seattle Film Critics Society board member, an approved critic for Rotten Tomatoes, and a regular contributor to Rock and Roll Globe, Seattle Film Blog, and Video Librarian. She has also written or spoken about film for Amazon, KEXP's Sound and Vision, KUOW's All Things Considered, Minneapolis's City Pages, the Northwest Film Forum, the Seattle International Film Festival, and The Stranger. She was born in Connecticut, raised in Alaska, and works in development at Cascade Public Media/KCTS 9. She is a Whitman College graduate and has lived in the Pacific Northwest for 35 years. The 2023 Seattle International Film Festival was held on May 11-21. Ron was able to meet with Director Sarah Kambe Holland. Her debut  feature film, Egghead & Twinkie, received much accolades at SIFF. It was one of the few films that were nominated for the prestigious New Cinema Competition Award and the Golden Space Needle Award (best film at SIFF). That's quite an achievement when you consider there were over 6000 films shown at SIFF 2023. Egghead & Twinkie is coming-of-age LGBTQ+ film of a recently out Asian American teen Twinkie and her nerdy best friend Egghead. Together, they set off on a 2,000-mile road trip to meet her online crush. It has all the tropes of a classic 80s teen movie. But its not an 80s reboot for Generation Z. Instead, it explores one person's story to comprehend cultural and sexual identity and learn the importance of unconditional love. And it's also a great comedy! Sarah has incredible creative vision and a sense for conveying emotional weight. She also directed a wonderful cast and managed a highly capable creative team. But make no mistake...this is Sarah's film. Not only was she the Director, but also the Writer, Producer and Editor. I believe Sarah is the best of her generation and we will see her directing major feature films in the future.Egghead & Twinkiehttps://eggheadandtwinkie.com/homeDirector/Writer/Producer/Editor Sarah Kambe HollandStarring Sabrina Jieafa, Louis Tomeo, Asahi HiranoIMDBhttps://www.imdb.com/title/tt13242416/fullcredits/?ref_=tt_cl_smSIFF 2023https://www.siff.net/festival/egghead-and-twinkieThe Wrath of the iOtiansEmail: thewrathoftheiotians@gmail.comInstagram: thewrathoftheiotiansTwitter:  @OfiOtiansWebsite: https://thewrathoftheiotians.buzzsprout.com/MusicLand Of The Me-me by Aleksandar Dimitrijevic (TONO)Licensed under the NEO Sounds Music License Agreement

The acting, cinematography and sound design are hypnotic....creating a realistic and surrealistic atmosphere at the same time. One feels like they are experiencing a strange nightmare, but realizing they are fully awake. In this episode of the Fueling Creativity in Education podcast, Dr. Cyndi Burnett and Dr. Matthew Worwood welcome Samantha Olschan, an award-winning transmedia artist and educator who works across animation, art, and design for films, brands, and experiential media. Her creative practice investigates how storytelling, motion design, and experimental narrative can serve underrepresented and/or underserved communities.   Listen in to learn how Samantha combines collaborative, game-based, and project-based learning in the classroom with digital media as a learning aid. You'll gain insight into how you can use gamification, play, special projects, and “artist dates” to engage students in learning through creativity both in the classroom and out in their community.   “Through experimentation and play, we can open ourselves up to learning more.”  – Samantha Olschan   Samantha describes how creativity is separate from art and design, the importance of teaching students to work with ambiguity, and how to get your students/kids to trust their ideas and feel confident in their creativity. She emphasizes the value of organizing class time to enable students to explore their interests, produce quality outcomes, and avoid burnout.   “My approach to teaching creativity is through reconnecting the student to empathy and trust. They have to trust their ideas.” – Samantha Olschan   Samantha's Tips for Teachers and Parents: Practice empathy. Think about your students and what they would be excited by, and even your younger self and what you would be excited by. Give yourself permission to try new things. Ask lots of questions to the people around you. Find a mentor or be a mentor. There are lots of people in your community that can support you and engage with your students in fun ways. Look to your community for funding for creative materials and resources. Creativity is about experimentation, exploration, and engagement - not tools, objects, and outcomes.   Recommended Resources: The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron Listen to the episode with Liz Radday   Eager to bring more creativity into your home or classroom?  Access a variety of creativity resources and tools & listen to more episodes of The Fueling Creativity in Education Podcast by visiting our website,  www.CreativityandEducation.com.   Subscribe to our monthly newsletter!   Have a question? You can contact me here: email: rick@theoutdoorbizpodcast.com or leave me a message on Speakpipe!   Show Notes How Rob was introduced to the Outdoors My real connection with the outdoors started with my dad and going out on these crazy adventures with him and my two older brothers. The funny thing is my dad was a Southern boy. He's from Tennessee. He knew absolutely nothing about the outdoors. I mean, I, I don't know if he knew anything but someone helped him get the equipment and things that we needed, external backpacks and all that stuff from back then. Honestly, that really, if I had to celebrate my real connection to it. He had two weeks of vacation every year and those would be dedicated to taking his three crazy sons out. When he picked up his first camera I had a Pentax K 2000, so if that doesn't date me, I don't know what does. But my getting into photography, was really just my passion thing. It hit me really, I think in college, when, you're exposed to a lot of courses. I went to a small liberal arts college in upstate New York, Hobart College. And I majored in environmental studies, and wildlife management. So sort of this odd combination I had to petition the school cause they had nothing around wildlife. I took one photography class and you take that black-and-white photography class everybody takes to get your entry-level photo class. I got, I think a B, but I remember that I didn't like any of the history stuff. I just wanted to shoot the camera. That's all I wanted to do. The start of GLP Film I pretty much was doing freelance. I did some independent projects with organizations, some nonprofits out of Seattle, and one in particular called the Tibetan Nuns Project. It was a small NGO. They had a project on the Tibetan side of India. So I went there for three consecutive years just to shoot their calendar. They had an annual calendar, but that was one example of a project. But more importantly, I did a lot of solo work. When I was in Seattle, I went to grad school. At the University of Washington, I actually got into the business. So I got an MBA, which again, that was the last thing I thought I'd ever get, but I got an MBA and, after school, I started with a company, in the digital content space, in the outdoor industry. The inspiration for GLP Films I had these three different sorts of stools and the legs of the stool that I like to look at. One was this real passion for conservation. I had a real passion for the outdoors. I worked for the Appalachian Mountain Club for five years. Worked for nonprofits like The Nature Conservancy. So I had a real interest in and passion and conservation. That was one stool. I think the other was obviously media, I started in photography and got into video. I think on the video side, the turning point for me was Al Gore's Inconvenient Truth. Seeing that in 2006, I think it was the number-one at that time documentary film of all time. And if you can take a slideshow and make it the highest-grossing documentary film, there's something there. And, it really was just the power of video. And, it really was just the power of video. And I saw that and I used it to go to the Seattle International Film Festival every year. And I would go to all the documentary films on international. I would just go myself, sit in the back row, buy all these random tickets, looking for the most far-flung countries in the world. So I got really into documentaries. So that was the second leg. And then the third leg was business. That entrepreneurship bug hit me as a young kid. And I ended up getting a graduate degree. I studied in India and South Africa and Brazil while going to business school. And so for me I wanna combine these three components. Rob's advice for folks that want to get into photography or shoot films? I will say though, in hindsight, because I do know a lot of very successful photographers is . . . the classic . . . focus on what you do. Find your niche and become the absolute best in what you do. Just make sure that you love what you're doing. Because at the end you're gonna work more as an entrepreneur or small business. You're gonna have to be a go-getter. And, it's tough to have that energy if you don't like what you're doing. So just make sure that you focus on whatever your niche is and your specialty. And become the absolute best, just make sure you love it. And then I think the other point though, is network network network, really leverage your local regional, national, global audience because that really is going to be the key to how you get your content out there, your work out there, your expertise out there for others to pick you up. Trade Show Banner Sustainability or Bust Daily Routines My big thing is getting outdoors. So, I run and have Qualified for Boston twice. So I'm a big runner. I love to bike, I'm in Kennebunkport, Maine. So, I'm right along the coast, I feel very, very lucky where we are. And so I'm running, biking, walking, every day. Favorite Books I'm more on the newspaper side than the magazine side. I would say on the newspaper side New York times. I mean some of the best editorial content globally. Magazines- I've always been a fan of Outside. Expedition Books- Galen Rowell Favorite piece of outdoor gear MSR Whisper Light Sustainability Storytelling Competition GLP Films has just launched its " sustainability storytelling competition" It's a global competition open to all industries, not just tourism.
