The Sands Of Time With LOCHLAN WATT From RUN

HEAVY Music Interviews

Interview by Kris PetersMelbourne blackened post-metalcore outfit RUN today dropped a surprise EP, True Heaviness Is Time. The band's second offering, True Heaviness Is Time is a dynamic and powerful tour de force that grips as it slams from peak to peak, tackling the pain of existence with an aural violence powered by positivity.Featuring guest vocals from Joel Birch of The Amity Affliction, John Floreani of Trophy Eyes, and Sophie Jest of R.U.B, there's a multitude of diverse sounds on display within the band's own unique take on heavy music - a classic 2000s metalcore sound infused with modern post-black metal.Vocalist Lochlan Watt sat down with HEAVY to discuss the EP."We put out our debut release in 2020 as a studio project that I was spearheading with a producer and a session drummer," he explained of RUN. "From there it had evolved over a few different line-ups into a full band. Then in 2023 we put out a couple of singles as a bit of a testing ground for that, and now finally we have our second EP, True Heaviness Is Time, which is out now."We ask him about the secret nature of the EP drop."People seemed to be really excited about the surprise Bring Me The Horizon album last week," he replied. "I work in this industry and see bands doing the same thing over and over again in terms of having pre-orders and release rollouts and stuff, and I thought because I'm not beholden to anyone else or any record labels with this, why not do it a little bit differently? We've released three of the singles so far, so people have already got 50% of the EP because it's six tracks. If we were to announce the EP now and then say it's coming out in a couple of months… I feel like that would be a little deflationary. You would lose a bit of the excitement. Maybe we could have announced the EP a long time ago while we were rolling out these singles, but the way that the artwork is set up, it slowly reveals the bigger picture throughout the singles. I think it's a more exciting way to do it. You get a little taste of what the bigger picture is with each single, then now, BOOM, you can see the full picture, and you understand what we were doing."In the full interview, Lochlan discusses the relationship between the seasons and the EP, runs through each of the songs individually and explains more about them including where they fit into the EP, talks about the guest artists and how and why they became involved, the limited vinyl run that has the bands debut EP as the B side, upcoming shows and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Interview by Kris PetersNewcastle punk rockers Trophy Eyes have always - deliberately - blurred the line between punk and hardcore. Their sound has an identifiably Trophy Eyes sting, with enough elements from both of those genres to appeal to a broader cross section of music lovers.Of course, when you through in sprinklings of rock and an unmistakably Australian DNA line, the end result is fun.Pure and simple. But during COVID - as it did for many bands and people the world over - the fun stopped for Trophy Eyes.Disillusioned by many cancellations and the inability to directly converse and write and bounce ideas off each other the seeds of doubt became a burden too big to prolong and when the band began working on their new album Suicide And Sunshine - which will be released on June 23 - they were all in agreeance that this would be their final record before leaving Trophy Eyes while there was still some positivity to cling to.Because of that the band decided to take an anything goes attitude throughout the process, deciding that the only rule was that they unanimously wanted this new record to showcase the growth of the band musically while still strongly reflecting on their formative years and direction. The result is an outstanding collection of songs that continues their original ethos of exploring the very boundaries of hardcore and punk music.Vocalist John Floreani joined HEAVY to shed more light."I'm proud of this one," he smiled. "Probably the first time I've been proud of music that I have written pre-release. I'm really happy. I think it's probably our best and really excited for everyone to hear it."Picking up on the comment we push him to elaborate."Most of the time when I put anything out I am my own worst critic," he measured. "I'm always like, fuck, that could have been better or different and I could have done this better. Especially when you sit on an album for about a year by the time it comes out you're already thinking I'm better at songwriting or whatever than when I was putting this out. You kind of put this thing out and go, this is my best work but really you're already onto the next stuff. But this time, no, I'm really happy. I'm proud of it. I think it's a great depiction of Trophy Eyes' entire career rolled into one sound. In the full interview, John talks more about the musical make up of Suicide And Sunshine, the problems they had leading into it, overcoming those problems, blending punk and hardcore, sharing personal feelings through music, tattoos, the title and where it comes from, their upcoming album tour and if, in fact, this is the end for Trophy Eyes.

We are bloody stoked to bring The Beautiful Monument back on the show this week to chat about their forthcoming album I'm The Reaper. The ladies are fast becoming hot property in Australia's heavy music scene with their blend of genre-crossing anthems and lyrically captivating songs you can't help but belt out. Shredmaster Andrea 'Andy' Skoumbri is this week's guest co-host and she's going into detail about their rise to fame, the struggles along the way (including parents who see a career in music as more of a hobby) and the hard-hitting, and emotionally heartbreaking story behind their latest single 'Reaper'. But it's not all emotional, podcast host Browny also takes a look back one of the biggest moments the band had this year, when they played both Sydney and Melbourne Download Festival and some of the antics that happened at those shows. Australia's pop punk scene is in great hands, especially with Trophy Eyes at the helm, their new album The American Dream is the topic of conversation in Episode #49 of Wall of Sound: Up Against The Wall with frontman John Floreani on co-hosting duties. The band, while still young into their careers, have achieved so much in a short amount of time, worldwide success, signing to a top label and unfortunate accumulation of hate/negativity from so-called fans. John explains that they didn't start the band to be famous, they just wanted to release music that they liked playing and if people enjoyed it along the way, so be it. What they didn't expect was the wave of unruly fans who think they know what's best for the band and how their sense of entitlement really puts a dampener on it all. No one wants to be told they suck or that they're making music one person isn't a fan of and (on a far worse end of the spectrum) that someone thinks they should die because they're doing something different to what they started with. Its keyboard warriors and scum like that who really put a dampener on the music industry, but Trophy Eyes are doing their part to stand their ground and fight back, calling out the "haters" with new track 'You Can Count On Me' and a new stance on how the music industry perceives them. John Floreani more than happily addresses the current state of music with podcast host Browny and how the band's maturing over the years has assisted the band's progression in sound and direction. Their new album kicks arse and should be heard by everyone. Also, being a pop-punk hero, our 'Ultimate Pop Punk Song' is back and John more than happily joins the likes of Jordan Pundik (New Found Glory), Scott Eckel (Makeout) and Mitch Chamberlain (Satellites) by contributing his lyrics to the cause. If you're new to the idea, take a listen to how it all plays out. There's also plenty of pop punk goodness to get you through the day including New Music from Hands Like Houses, twenty one pilots, Stateside, Eat Your Heart Out, Grizzlyshark and Alkaline Trio, throwbacks from +44, Satellites, Paramore, Green Day, Tonight Alive and Introvert + former Heroes for Hire frontman Brad Smith recalls some of his favourite memories whilst playing in the band and how things have changed since his very public ousting back in 2013. #WoSUATW #TrophyEyes #JohnFloreani #PopPunk #PopRock #AustralianBands #StadiumRock #HandsLikeHouses #Satellites #HeroesForHire #BradSmith #EatYourHeartOut #Stateside #TonightAlive #JaredLeto #ThirtySecondsToMars #TheAmericanDream #30SecondsToMars #Introvert #Grizzlyshark #Paramore #GreenDay #Plus44 #AlkalineTrio #twentyonepilots #21Pilots #Podcast #MusicPodcast #WallOfSoundAU
