Is it possible for technology to make us fundamentally better at the things that make us uniquely human? It's a bit of a paradox but the potential of what's possible and what's already happening today will blow your mind. In this Learning Tech Talks I'm chatting with Sophie Thompson, one of the brilliant minds behind VirtualSpeech, and let me tell you, it was enlightening. A recent graduate from LAMDA, Ned Costello has been making quite the impact on the theatre scene. Since his debut understudying Nero in the Lyric Hammersmith's production of Britannicus last year, Ned has gained a reputation for playing being one of few young actors truly able to capture the essence of a theatrical villain. He's currently preparing to open the Park Theatre's highly anticipated revival of Philip Ridley's Leaves of Glass where he will play the central character of Steven. After a period of playing to large houses like the Lyric Hammersmith and Nottingham Playhouse, this will also mark a return for Ned performing in an intimate studio space with the play arriving at Park Theatre's PARK90 auditorium. In their first major interview, Ned Costello opens up about the past year - stepping onto the Lyric Hammersmith stage last minute to play the legendary Roman Emperor Nero and then playing opposite Olivier Award winners Adrian Scarborough and Sophie Thompson in The Clothes They Stoop Up In. His debut has excited audiences and his peers as anticipation grows around Leaves of Glass. Throughout our interview, he shares his unwavering enthusiasm for the industry that he's joined. After finishing a Politics and International Relations degree at University of Bristol, his transition to acting was perhaps not unexpected after spending some time with NYMT - he even shares he was mentored by West End leading lady Alex Young! When we ask him if he'd be interested in returning to musicals, he immediately sprites up - expressing his love for Standing at the Sky's Edge and Cabaret which have opened to huge acclaim. Nevertheless, Ned Costello remains one of the most exciting new actors to emerge onto the stage and we look forward to Leaves of Glass and anything he does next.Leaves of Glass plays at Park Theatre on 11 May - 3 June and tickets are available now.

Two-time Olivier Award winning actor Adrian Scarborough has written The Clothes They Stood Up In, an adaptation of the novella of the same name by Alan Bennett (The Madness of King George, Talking Heads, The History Boys, and The Lady in the Van), about a mild-mannered couple (played by Adrian and Sophie Thompson) who return home from the opera one evening to find their flat completely bare and every single item they own stolen. What happens next is the action of this very funny play, which opens this week at the Nottingham Playhouse, and Adrian talks about about how his adaptation came to be, and how many versions he's had to learn; the challenges of wearing both his actor and playwright hats; his successful preview at The Berko Speakeasy; finding (and imitating) Bennett's voice; the value of getting microphones in the toilet; the privilege of getting to sit on the other side of the table; and the enormous satisfaction of challenging one's self to come up with the goods. An A to Z of UK Television Drama

In this episode we turn our attention to a 1995 adaptation (and for Andy’s money the best adaptation) of Jane Austen’s Persuasion. It stars Amanda Root, best known for the reboot of The Forsyte Saga, as Anne Elliot who is apparently already an ‘old maid’ at 27! Ciaran HInds (Game of Thrones’ Mance Rayder) plays dashing Captain Wentworth, whose marriage proposal Anne previously turned down due to the interference of Susan Fleetwood’s Lady Russell. Also among the sterling cast are Killing Eve’s Fiona Shaw as Mrs Croft, everyone’s favourite Marshal of Atrios, John Woodvine as Admiral Croft, Sophie Thompson as Mary Musgrove, Corin Redgrave as Sir Walter Elliot, Phoebe Nicholls as Elizabeth Elliot, and Samuel West as Mr Elliot. There are also some lovely roles for Judy Cornwell, David Collings, and Robert Glenister, and there’s not a duff performance anywhere. Andy gives the production a ‘6’ on a new scale he has created to judge Austen adaptations: The Bonnet Scale. This by the way is good score on said scale. A 6 means its not too bonnety - not too chocolate box and hearts and flowers, it having something valuable and realistic to say about the historical period as well as being a heartwarming story of unrequited love. It’s Martin’s first watch of this adaptation or even much of 'crisis in corsets' TV but he likes what he sees. In fact he watched it twice in preparation for this podcast. Andy is reminded of his A-Levels and studying the novel for English, but thankfully he does not read out his lengthy essay from 1989 about Louisa’s all important accident at the Cobb! Andy also reveals the reason for his lifelong hatred of Bath, where it always rains. Talking of rain, ee also consider the importance of umbrellas in period drama. And after 31 years Andy finally discovers why the name Captain Wentworth has always sounded vaguely familiar to him. TV fans will not be disappointed. We hope you continue to enjoy our little journey through the British television archives and to almost quote Mary Musgrove: “We’re very sorry if our podcast is insufficiently grand for you!” Next Time: A Question of Attribution (by Alan Bennett)

Hello? Are you squished? Have I squelched you? When a woman's bath falls through the floor into the flat below, she meets her downstairs neighbour for the very first time. This unforeseen meeting raises plenty of questions. Why is the bath full of tabloids and celebrity magazines? Where are all of the downstairs neighbour's belongings? Is it possible to have too much stuff? Is it possible to have too little? Stuff is a witty and surreal reminder that we never know what the insides of other people's homes look like and asks how far we might go for some space. Written by Alison Carr. Directed by Max Elton. Sound by Piers Sherwood-Roberts. Cast: Sophie Thompson (Feel Good, Present Laughter (Old Vic), Four Weddings and a Funeral). Bitter Pill committed to producing new writing until theatres in the UK reopen.
