Interview by Kris PetersIn the little over a decade since Neck Deep formed in the Barlow brothers' spare room in Wrexham, Wales, a lot has changed. From the scrappy, naively hopeful beginnings that define the starting of so many teenage bands, the pop-punks have gone on to be one of British Rock music's most successful global exports in recent memory: top 5 records in both the US and UK, global touring, viral hits and over a billion streams just some of the fruits of ten years spent mastering their craft. For the new self-titled record, the band, completed by Ben's older brother and bassist Seb, guitarists Matt West and Sam Bowden and drummer Matt Powles, took ‘doing their own thing' – and only their own thing – to the next level. Eschewing a keen list of collaborators and producers eager to work with one of rock's hottest properties and choosing, instead, to write and record in their own warehouse space, mere miles from where they grew up. Old school, just like it used to be.This April Australian fans get to taste the excitement, when Neck Deep return for The Dumbstruck Dumbf!*k Tour with special guests Albany New York pop punk act State Champs.HEAVY caught up with Neck Deep vocalist Ben Barlow for an entertaining chat ahead of the tour. It's been a couple of years since their last visit, so we start off by asking what has changed with Neck Deep since then."Not much, I don't think," he measured. "But we're very settled into this record, very settled into playing these songs live now. We're approaching the - or I think we're in the 10-year anniversary year of our seminal breakout record, Life's Not Out To Get You. And so, yeah, doing little bits and bobs with that and just planning ahead for the future still, you know, thinking forward even to the next record. Getting the ball moving with that."Then Barlow was struck with a sudden realization he may have forgotten something important."Oh, actually, what's changed?" he asked me in return. "Bloody hell, I got married this year, which is very nice (laughs)!"In the full interview, we discussed Neck Deep's upcoming tour in Australia, set to begin on April 21, while reflecting on their experiences since their last visit. Ben shared insights into the celebration of the 10-year anniversary of their breakout album Life's Not Out To Get You. He highlighted the band's positive dynamics and their excitement for new music, acknowledging the need to promote their self-titled album while also focusing on future projects. The conversation touched on their writing process, with Ben noting that they prefer to create music at home but are open to inspiration while on the road.We also delved into the song Dumbstruck Dumbfuck, which Ben described as a humorous take on modern masculinity and relationships. They emphasized the high-energy yet sentimental nature of Neck Deep's live performances, expressing enthusiasm about touring with State Champs due to their close friendship and compatible musical styles, and more.Full interview www.youtube.com/@HEAVYmagazineBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

As Britpop began to wane, certain British bands started to abandon the emphatic, polished sound that we were used to from Blur and Oasis in favour of a more gritty, energetic rock style. ‘Word Gets Around' by Stereophonics is a very easy to listen to album that transcends both Rock and Pop individually and was one of those transitional albums that kept the ideals & attitude of the 90s, but added a raw and melodic personality that became synonymous with early 2000s British Rock. PURE REASON REVOLUTION is a British Rock group formed at Westminster University in 2003. Trying to fit PRR into a specific genre would be a difficult task, which is one of their attractive qualities. Legendary musician Guy Pratt, known for working with the likes of Pink Floyd played the bass guitar on seven of the eight tracks on Pure Reason Revolution's new album. The band tells fans to expect more ambitious bass lines in Coming Up To Consciousness than they've heard in any previous Pure Reason Revolution albums. The band was equally thrilled to work with multiple members of prog icon The Pineapple Thief; the record was mixed by Bruce Soord and mastered by Steve Kitch. Jon Courtney comments: “Spawned from the bereavement after my dog was put down, a numb & dry creative spell ensued, but after a meeting with my writer friend Craig Walker (Archive/Power of Dreams) & sharing how the last months had been, he urged me to get this experience down in lyrics & music. Suddenly the album flew out of me/us! In terms of the recording process, this album was probably the most enjoyable to make, with the various collaborations firing creativity. A (relatively) in-depth analysis of British Rock band Supertramp in just over fifteen minutes.Supertramp are a British rock group and successfully straddled both progressive rock and pop-rock. Formed in 1970, all members were multi-instrumentalists. Co-founder, composer and lead singer, Roger Hodgson left the band in 1983 to focus on raising his family and a maintaining a more spiritual existence.Although Supertramp are known for ambitious concept albums, they are best known for radio-friendly hits such as “Dreamer” and “The Logical Song”. According to Hodgson, both these songs were based on his experiences growing up in the English countryside and attending boarding school. In this episode I am in conversation with Dr. Andrew Webber.I hope you enjoy the podcast and do leave feedback if you like what you have heard.Mathew Woodall
Formed in North London, Bombay Bicycle Club is the sound of four best friends finding joy and savoring the connection in making music together and experimenting. They think of themselves as a genre-less band (The Independent), “not bound down by genre in a way that a lot of our contemporaries were”. With the 2023 release of My Big Day, and an EP called Fantasies, both of which feature a host of guest vocalists, it's clear that they're still freely mixing sounds and cover a lot of ground, sonically. Bombay Bicycle Club plays an unplugged set in-studio. Set list: 1. Turn The World On 2. Diving 3. Luna

Sir Rod Stewart has made another promise to Newstalk ZB's Mike Hosking. When the British rock icon joined Hosking, the radio host reminded him of his last time in New Zealand, where he dedicated a song to him. "You said was I coming to the show and I said I'd come to the show if you played Handbags and Gladrags and I was joking. But you did, and you dedicated it to me and that meant the world. I thought it was one of the greatest nights of my life," Hosking said. Chuckling, Sir Rod asked if there is anything else Hosking would like to hear to which he replies People Get Ready, which is a song that is performed regularly, and the artist tells Hosking he will "see you there." The 78-year-old was last in New Zealand in 2015 and is back next month for the third, and possibly final, time with shows in Dunedin, Hawke's Bay and Auckland. With a record of 250 million records sold and an entry into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Sir Rod says he and his team have their shows down to a science. "It does take a lot of planning," the London-born rocker told Newstalk ZB's Mike Hosking. "Not too much rehearsal, because we don't take years off. We played our last show only two weeks ago, so we don't need any rehearsals." Stewart prides himself on his performances and will be bringing his alter ego to New Zealand in order to give fans one last taste of his infectious live show, saying he brings as much of his personality as he can. "I'm old school, it's entertainment, people want to be entertained," he says. "I'm Mr. Razzle Dazzle, aren't I?" "I lived through the sixties and the seventies and the eighties were especially razzle dazzle, but I've always been a bit of a show off." After Australia and New Zealand, the United States and Britain are on the itinerary and while many at 78 would recoil at the thought of spending months on end at the other side of the world, Sir Rod Stewart relishes in the opportunity. "Love it! It wouldn't be doing it if I didn't love it. It's what the good Lord put me on this earth to do." The inevitable retirement rumours have swirled in recent years, with many predicting Sir Rod to hang up his microphone. He says he plans to work with a number of artists, including Jools Holland, and produce some music of some other genres and take up some new endeavours. "I just want to get away from what I'm doing, I've been doing it a hell of a long time and I love it, but I want a new challenge." In recent years he has become something of a philanthropist, having notoriously been called cheap in the past by Ronnie Wood, most recently housing a number of Ukrainian refugees who had fled the Russian invasion. "Lovely, lovely people. We've got to win this war, it'll be the end of man-kind as we know it if we don't." This is not the only example of the rock legend's generosity. In late February, he visited Essex Hospital and paid for a full day's worth of MRI scans following a phone call with Sky News, in a bid to reduce waiting times. He told Mike Hosking he had heard the effort had reduced times but 10 percent. If these are in fact Sir Rod Stewart's final shows in New Zealand they promise to be full of razzle dazzle, although fans will be hoping this is not the last time we see the famed performer on our shores. SHOW DATES: Wed 5 April - Forsyth Barr Stadium - DUNEDIN Sat 8 April - Mission Estate Winery - NAPIER Sun 9 April - Spark Arena - AUCKLAND TICKETS AVAILABLE FROM TICKETMASTER.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
We talk with local CT musician Alan Marcus from a new band called The British Legends of Rock Show. Alan had a long run in other bands in Fairfield County but wanted to step it up and form a new kind of tribute band...instead of catering to just one popular rock band like Led Zeppelin or The Who and their songs he decided to change it up by paying tribute to multiple bands. But he had to draw the line somewhere and make a decision on which bands to cover and perform stellar versions of their songs at the same time. That is when he came up with The British Legends of Rock Show! For more info on The British Legends of Rock Show log onto their website: https://britishlegendsrock.com/ABOUT THE BAND/BIO It takes quite a band to play it ALL which is why The British Legends of Rock Show is such a standout and unique musical performance. Collectively, these pro-players have shared the stage with musical greats The Monkee's, The Crystals, The Coasters, The Bangles, The Waitresses, Marshall Crenshaw, Ronnie Spector, Tommy James & The Shondells. The world had changed for Robert Plant in 1982. Led Zeppelin had broken up following the death of John Bonham in 1980. Big riff, classic rock had been replaced by punk, the new romantics, new wave and MTV was now the one place folks went to get their new music. Many of his peers from the 1970s had broken up, retired or were trying new things. So Robert put together a new band and released his first solo effort, Pictures at Eleven. But Robert didn't want to trade on his past so he did not perform any Led Zeppelin songs for the first few years as a solo artist. He wanted to forge ahead, make new music and not have to be a jukebox for those big Zep fans. And he got a lot of help from friends like Phil Collins and Cozy Powell on the drums, new writing partner and guitar player Robbie Blunt and more folks to help him forge his new sound. It may not be my favorite Robert Plant album but it set the tone for him as a solo artist and helped create his own sound, which was different from Led Zeppelin, and set him up for great success for decades to come.Ugly American Werewolf in London WebsiteTwitterInstagramYouTubeLInkTreewww.pantheonpodcasts.com

Hi everyone, Today I review a solo song from Ian Brown (he was the lead singer of The Stone Roses, but I think technically still is). In this track, he joins forces with Oasis' Noel Gallagher. This song is a must-listen. As promised, here is a link to the video: https://youtu.be/Kz1t7SS6zYg as well as to the lyrics: https://genius.com/Ian-brown-keep-what-ya-got-lyrics Thank you for tuning in!
The Who were ready to call it a day in 1982 which makes It's Hard their swan song. Of course they eventually came back but they were facing MTV, middle age, solo careers and examining life through different lenses. Keith Moon died in 1978 after the release of Who Are You and The Who soldiered on with Kenney Jones (The Faces) on the drums. But Pete Townshend's solo debut Empty Glass in 1980, which featured the mega-hit Let My Love Open The Door, put the band in an awkward position. The Who released Face Dances in 1981 but Pete was more keen on a solo career after the triple platinum Empty Glass. But the record company wanted one more Who album and tour and It's Hard was to serve as The Who's swan song which it did for nearly a quarter of a decade.Radio hits Athena and Eminence Front are well known but diving deeper into the album unlocks some unheralded songs written by John Entwhistle, Pete's contemplation of himself as a middle age rock star and what their collective future might be with or without the band. As The Wolf has moved to London & around Europe he finds progressive rock to be a very English sub genre of rock music. Growing up an Anglophile when it came to rock music, he was fascinated by The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Cream, Led Zeppelin and all the blues based guitar driven rock. But progressive rock has different textures and flavors, not to mention some bands that to this day are still mostly unknown in the US.So who does he get to lead him on a journey to get to know UK prog legends Gentle Giant around the 50th anniversary of their Octopus album? Why a 30 year old American, of course. Autumn Hawk Percival is a songwriter, singer and multi-instrumentalist who has passion and knowledge for prog music. Ahead of the release of her own new album, she takes us on a tour of the soundscapes of these UK proggers in an album that has become known as the turning point in their career. Hear why the eccentric literary references, offbeat harmonies and odd sounds all craft a soundscape that Autumn finds appealing and hear her articulate those feelings to us lowbrow rockers.Ugly American Werewolf in London WebsiteTwitterInstagramYouTubeLInkTreewww.pantheonpodcasts.com
