Interview by Kris PetersSydney metal outfit Inertia announced themselves on the scene last year with the release of their debut album, Second Shadow.Blending the boundaries of the genre by bringing elements of dark pop and soul to the surface of a melting pot that traverses the darkest reaches of hard rock and metal, Second Shadow opened Inertia up to a generation of music lovers yearning for acceptance through music. It helped secure the quintet a host of shows, touring the nation extensively supporting Polaris, Dayseeker (US), Bury Tomorrow (US), Northlane, Holding Absence, Caskets (UK), Thy Art Is Murder, Thornhill and more. They played Good Things Festival Sydney last December, and recently travelled their way across regional Australia with In Hearts Wake.It has been true reward for effort, culminating in their own headline Australia tour, starting April 19 in Sydney and hitting Brisbane and Adelaide before finishing in Melbourne on April 27.HEAVY caught up with guitarist Mark, bass player Oliver and vocalist Julian to find out the details. We mention the compact nature of the tour, focusing on the capital cities."We just wanted to hit the capital cities, and hopefully we can get to some of the regional spots later on in the year," Mark explained. "But yeah, just for our first headliner tour for the album, we'll keep it short and sweet."Which leads to HEAVY asking how Inertia thinks the public reacted to Second Shadow."The reception's been really good," Oliver smiled. "It has exceeded expectations for us. Streams are going really well and live, people seem to receive the songs really well as well. So, yeah, it's blown expectations out of the water."In the modern age of music where streaming is king and figures are readily available, we ask how deeply a band looks into the rabbit hole and how they measure expectations when it comes to a debut album."I think it's just do better," Julian measured. "Each record needs to be bigger and better. I don't think we go into an album thinking we're going to get a specific result. We just write the best music that we can at that given time and push ourselves to be better. The result in terms of how fans latch onto the record and the streamings… everything's secondary to making good music."In the full interview, discussion centred on Inertia's upcoming headline tour. The band shared their excitement about promoting their debut album, Second Shadow, emphasizing their dedication to quality music and the evolution of their sound, which blends various influences and defies strict genre classification. The band reflected on their recent tour experiences with In Heart's Wake, Reliqa, and Ocean Sleeper, highlighting both the challenges and memorable moments, such as a humorous birthday celebration. Looking ahead, they plan to focus on writing new music and organizing future tours, encouraging fans to follow their social media for ticket updates.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

You Me At Six are set to kick off their Australian tour this week, starting in Brisbane on January 24. The run of shows - that extends through Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth - will feature very special guests Holding Absence, the band British rock bible Kerrang! labelled as British rock's “new leading light”.YOU ME AT SIX are one of the most beloved British rock bands of all time, having delivered multiple number 1 albums, dominating charts, racking up hundreds of millions of streams, selling out arenas and headlining festivals; and along the way crafting some of the catchiest pop-rock anthems of their generation. Bite My Tongue, Take on the World, Underdog, Beautiful Way, Room to Breathe… the list of classics seems almost endless. The band's revival of infectious and spirited pop-rock earned them a mass of fans worldwide, seeing them sell out show after show across the globe.Choosing to bring such a storied 20-year career to an end cannot be easy. Doing so with your original line-up, on your own terms, and with the band members remaining best of friends is unheard of. But as the saying goes, go out at the top of your game and You Me At Six are certainly doing that.Having shocked the rock world recently by announcing their imminent demise, the band are setting out on their greatest tour, delivering a career-spanning 2-hour set and determined to leave the fans with a truly special performance to remember them by. “We've got a plan to play songs from every single album and make it a real victory lap. And everyone feels like that. We've looked at the setlists and gone, ‘Cool – those five can stay, the rest is going to be stuff we haven't done for years. We want to have 50 songs ready to go so that each night we can constantly mix it up and make it special.”“When we started YMAS we were kids. We only ever wanted to travel and to experience life as a group of friends. We feel like on the eve of our 20th anniversary as a band, now is a good time to call time. “We're in a fortunate position where our fans still want to see us live and come celebrate the life of this band. So that is what we will do for 2024 and 2025. We can't wait to see our fans on the road.” explains frontman Josh Franceschi.Dave Griffiths caught up with Josh to find out a little more about what to expect and how much fun the band plans to have on their final tour to this country.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

“A puzzle, a painting, a work of art in the making.” Frontman Lucas Woodland from Wales-based post metal outfit Holding Absence recently joined the IUF podcast. It's been an insanely good and well-deserved journey for Lucas in the last eight years. In today's podcast, he talks about the early days of the band while establishing themselves as one of the forerunners of the new generation of post-metal. Now, with their new album titled “The Noble Art Of Self-Destruction,” Holding Absence have seemingly pushed their way to the top, and while hundreds of fans continue to flock in their direction, Lucas is sure to keep pushing the limits of the band. Aside from the music, we get the chance to nerd out with Lucas on his love for anime, Star Wars, and beyond. For fans of The Plot In You, Thornhill, and The Amity Affliction, make some room for Holding Absence. They belong here. “The Noble Art Of Self-Destruction” is out now worldwide via Sharptone Records.Stay connected with Holding Absence, visit: https://holdingabsence.com/, https://www.instagram.com/holdingabsence/ and https://www.facebook.com/Holdingabsence/Stay connected with IUF, visit: https://interviewunderfire.com/
We had the pleasure of interviewing Holding Absence over Zoom video! From the moment of our first breath to the very last gasp we take before we die, we never stop growing as people. Every trial and tribulation, every heartbreak, success and failure, every scar, blemish and wrinkle is another brushstroke illuminating our life's unique canvas. As Holding Absence frontman Lucas Woodland sings on “The Angel in the Marble,” the closing track on his band's outstanding third album The Noble Art of Self-Destruction (out now via SharpTone Records), we are, each and every one of us, “a puzzle, a painting, a work of art in the making.”Holding Absence's new album is a testament to how our life's story is never fully told, with opportunities for change and growth found in every moment, from the depths of despair to the euphoria of our greatest loves. Whether adding flourishes of colour to an already picturesque painting, or chiselling away at the marble to reveal the beauty within, The Noble Art of Self-Destruction – the final act in a trilogy of records encompassing the first chapter of Holding Absence's career – speaks to how we are each an unfinished work of art with new meanings and qualities waiting to be discovered.A record Lucas describes as a form of self-therapy that sees him more candid and comfortable with his emotions than ever before, The Noble Art of Self-Destruction brims with a level of energy, excitement and sheer weight of feeling that is unparalleled in contemporary alternative music. Whether Lucas and his bandmates – guitarist Scott Carey, bassist Ben Elliott and drummer Ash Green – are performing relatable anthems about imposter syndrome and self-loathing like massive singles “Crooked Melody” and “False Dawn,” gushing love ballads (“Honey Moon”) or existential reflections on suicide (“Death Nonetheless”), the four-piece's approach on their new album is packed with the kind of vigour that saw Kerrang! label them as British rock's “new leading light” and Loudwire proclaim the Cardiff natives to be “the UK's most exciting new rock band.”Recorded at Canada's Jukasa Studios with producer Dan Weller (Enter Shikari, Bury Tomorrow), The Noble Art of Self-Destruction builds further into the lore of Holding Absence that sets them apart from many of their contemporaries. Taking influence from a varied array of sources including Renaissance sculptor Michelangelo, sci-fi blockbuster Star Wars and the Japanese pottery art of Kintsugi, Holding Absence's new LP speaks to the desire of Lucas and his bandmates to create a project that exists as so much more than just a band.Having broken one million monthly listeners on Spotify and with top song “Afterlife” racking up in excess of 30,000,000 streams, The Noble Art of Self-Destruction looks a sure bet to bring even more success the way of Holding Absence, who've toured with the likes of Funeral For a Friend, Electric Callboy and You Me At Six. Previous LP The Greatest Mistake of My Life saw the band grace the covers of Kerrang! and Rock Sound, with glowing coverage from outlets including Loudwire, Alternative Press and Upset. The Guardian, meanwhile, praised Holding Absence as a band “making pop-rock anthems with rib-rattling drumming and mainstream appeal.”With that love only set to grow once The Noble Art of Self-Destruction is released, it's important for Lucas to emphasize how this album represents that what's come so far is just the beginning of Holding Absence's journey. We want to hear from you! We had the pleasure of interviewing Holding Absence over Zoom video.Holding Absence and Alpha Wolf have announced a split EP titled The Lost & The Longing, out via SharpTone. The EP includes four new tracks — two of which feature collaborations between both bands. To mark the announcement, Holding Absence have released a new single titled "Aching Longing," featuring Alpha Wolf.Lucas Woodland of Holding Absence comments, "We're ecstatic to be announcing The Lost & The Longing, our split EP with Alpha Wolf! They are a band we've loved as people and musicians for years now, and we're so grateful they wanted to drop this release with us."He continues, "We can't wait for people to hear our two new singles 'Aching Longing' and 'Coffin,' too! 'Aching Longing' is our band at its heaviest yet, and 'Coffin' is on the complete opposite side of the spectrum. We are always trying to stretch our band into new shapes, and can't wait for people to hear what we've produced with these two tracks!"Sabian Lynch of Alpha Wolf comments, "We first met Holding Absence back in 2019 at the Impericon fests in Europe and we got along like a house on fire. We really enjoy their super catchy tunes and luckily enough they enjoy our heavy tunes. We talked a bunch over social media and kept up to date with what they were doing and when Lucas (jokingly) mentioned that we should do a split, it surprisingly just seemed like the best idea ever. We both released albums around the same time and it made sense, timing-wise, for us both to release new music at the same time Working with them has been a breeze and we'd do it again in a heartbeat." We had the pleasure of interviewing Future Palace over Zoom video.Future Palace just released their brand new album “Run” via Arising Empire and have shared the video for "Dead Inside”.The song appears on the band's sophomore album Run. Get the album, which has been receiving increased attention from radio and press, such as SiriusXM, Idobi, American Songwriter, Bringin' It Backwards, A&P Reacts, Good Noise, and more, here. The release comes in CD, limited colored vinyl, and bundle formats."Dead Inside" is about the aftershocks from a toxic relationship that not only left its mark in the past, but also raises the question of how to deal with it after the fact."At the beginning of 'Dead Inside,' there was the personal experience that there are people who justify their behavior by saying that they are irrevocably and emotionally cold," says guitarist Manuel. "The track deals with a sometimes tragic situation both — lyrically and instrumentally. It reflects inner turmoil, helplessness, and anger at the same time.""Dead Inside" is the kind of song that begs to be played live, as well. "The new songs not only sound different," he continues. "They also came from different feelings. We are therefore particularly looking forward to the live shows — because capturing these feelings in music is one thing. Being able to share and express them directly is another." This is music that wants to be heard and felt — always and everywhere. For the music video, Future Palace worked with Peter Leukhardt (Annisokay, Beyond the Black, and Rising Insane.)Run was produced by Julian Breucker and Annisokay guitarist Christoph Wieczorek, who also mixed and mastered the record. The album explores the aftermath of a toxic relationship in a stunning and vulnerable way. The struggle with one's own salvation is only the beginning — even after escaping from a tough situation. The band sets these painful processes to music in dramatic post-hardcore fashion, which atmospherically reproduces the ups and downs of emotions. Kindred sonic spirits are Holding Absence, Spiritbox, While She Sleeps, Bring Me The Horizon, and Pvris.Future Palace released their debut Escape via Arising Empire and have since accumulated several million streams across streaming platforms. We want to hear from you!
