The Canadian twin siblings Phoenix and Mercedes Arn-Horn went from playing in the super successful band Courage My Love to moving in an entirely different direction as Softcult. They sit down with Tom to set up a song from their latest EP, “Heaven.”
In the 80s, the idea of special acoustic or unplugged albums and shows became a new medium that continues to today. Most think that Mtv started the movement in 1989 with their series called “unplugged”, however, most rock bands were playing acoustic renditions of their songs on radio when they would do in-town promotions long before then. This week we are celebrating bands that can re-imagine their songs with acoustic instruments and still rock! We are pulling the plug… and gasping for air guitars! What's this InObscuria thing? We're a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. Mtv started a series in 1989 called “unplugged”, and almost every mainstream relevant act started producing acoustic albums or versions of their songs. This week we listen to some artist that you may have never considered as having acoustic interpretations of their songs.Songs this week include:The Struts – “Fallin' With Me” from Unplugged At EastWest - EP (2023)Kingdom Come – “Janine” from Live & Unplugged (1998)Helloween – “Future World” from Unarmed (2009) Wednesday 13 – “Scary Song” from Undead Unplugged (2014)Corey Taylor – “Lunatic Fringe” from CMFB… Sides (2022)Courage My Love – “For Now” from For Now (Acoustic Sessions) (2012)MSG – “Lights Out” from Unplugged Live (1993) Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://x.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/inobscuria/og-shopCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/

Listener Beware: Kevin is on his own again… Happy New Year! 2022 has been an amazing year for new music from legacy artists, current artists, and new artists; in fact, this is the third celebration of 2022 music. It was an unprecedented year for rock n' punk n' metal, and we want to shed as much light on these killer cuts as possible. Some of these groups and albums we've talked about before, but we thought it was worth the time to recognize all of the amazing recorded output of 2022!What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection; an artist, album, or grouping of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. This week we look back on another tumultuous year that had its ups and downs, but mostly ups for the world of rock n' punk n' metal. In celebration of the New Year, we wanted to find some nuggets of joy from the last 12 months. From the start, Lucky Luke Brewing Company knew that they had to stay true to their original vision of making the brewery a tribute to their founder’s Great-Grandfather, Luke Hammons. The naming of their brewery was an organic pairing of their good fortune with Luke’s name. Luke Hammons was a lover of all things craft and American made. A family man and patriarch, he enjoyed working with his hands and could build just about anything. While he passed away in 2009, they know he would’ve been proud to see them building things from scratch, buying American wherever possible, and raising a glass with their loved ones. So here’s to Luke, and here’s to that sentimental someone in your life! The Mortician is a Black IPA that’s roasty, chocolatey, and with an added piney hop feel. This week on FDB - creepy dolls, illegal base jumpers, the lengths a half-naked teen would go for love, and more! We also get the opportunity to talk with the band Courage My Love, where we discuss their new single “Slow Motion,” their “Reimagined” versions of their previous works, and of course, what it would be like to have a human sized iguana as a roommate. This week, we review the fourth studio album from Falling In Reverse titled 'Coming Home'. We surprisingly enjoyed their previous album, 'Just Like You', two years ago, so does this follow-up continue that trend? Or does this revert back to the ego-driven and deterring sound that they built their brand on? Find out what we thought. (Review begins at 27:58)Also discussed this week, the album release date for 'How Did We Get So Dark?' by Royal Blood; teasing a possible new album announcement from Canadian electro-pop artist, LIGHTS; the Gorillaz will be releasing a 10 episode animated series on Adult Swim to complement their new album, 'Humanz'; and Korn is currently touring with a guest bassist on their South American tour, Tye Trujillo, the 12-year old son of Metallica bassist, Robert Trujillo. Finally, we reminisce about the American Nightmare Tour we attended last week; Mike briefly reviews albums from While We Sleep, The Anix, and Courage My Love; and Adam reviews albums from The Maine and Eternity Forever. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/theskinnywithmikeandadam/support

In this week's episode we kick it by the Dukkan with Reem Hameed after running into her at the Dubai Lynx in Episode 007. We related to each other over the idea of being third culture kids, and through this conversation we came to understand how she evolved to be mindful, articulate and passionate about what she does. We also touch on the idea of mentorship and Reem's particular approach to guiding the generation that follows us. Pull up a seat and pass the time. "We trust each other with the music and we trust each other with where we're going." - Jeremy Boyum Shadow Of Whales is an alternative indie-pop band with a passion for creating music and spreading hope through friendships. Fronting the group is Joshua Flores (Invisible Target), his brother Caleb on drums, Chris Fraga on lead guitar, Jeremy Boyum on bass guitar, and JD Vazquez on keys/glockenspiel. What makes this band truly unique is the experience that all of them have had in aggressively seeking careers in music with their previous bands. They are all songwriters, they all love music, and more importantly, they all love people. Shadow of Whales’ debut EP, released in 2014, charted on CMJ‘s Top 200 and has seen regular rotation at Starbucks Coffee across the United States and Canada. They have performed at several festivals including the Vans Warped Tour (San Antonio), Heart of Texas Rockfest, and South By So What?! Festival, and played with the likes of Forever Came Calling, Courage My Love, Run 2 Cover & Austin Jones. After the usual bits and news from around the industry, including an audio clip in which Randy Bachman definitively proves what the infamous opening chord is to The Beatles' “A Hard Day’s Night,” we kick off the interviews with The Road Heavy’s Ryan Blake, who joins Andrew on the phone from Nashville where the band is currently recording. Also, we have the last of our Canadian Music Week interviews, this one with Luke Austin of the Toronto-based Luke Austin Band. Luke discusses recording in Nashville with producer Vance Powell, visiting Third Man Records, touring on a train made famous by the Grateful Dead and Janis Joplin in the film Festival Express, and more. Lastly, we have Mercedes Arn-Horn of Courage My Love. The band has been up to a lot since being on the cover of Canadian Musician magazine a couple years ago. They’ve just re-issue their EP “Becoming” and are hard at work writing and recording their next album. Our Canadian Spotlight Song of the Week is “Joey Ramone” by Montreal’s The Magic Man.
For the third consecutive episode, we have a musical guest. And not just any guest. KC is joined by Dana Calitri, one of the singers of the original version of "Dreams Dreams", from NiGHTS into dreams...! You may remember the three smiling faces of our pals in Courage My Love from our July/August 2013 cover. We took a risk putting an up-and-coming band front-and-centre, but our staff and contributors have a lot of faith that this young trio is armed with all of the goods - talent, drive, and business savvy - to make a real impact in the Canadian music industry. They've done right by themselves (and us) since then, landing a JUNO nod for New Group of the Year, landing some dates on the almighty Vans Warped Tour, and released their EP "Becoming" through Warner Music Canada. We'll talk about what's next for the band, leading up to the release of their full-length, which is sure to elevate them to another new plateau. We also have eOne Music Canada's Secret Broadcast, whose new LP "Filthy Souls" was recorded at Robert Lang Studios in Seattle, WA with Grammy Award-winning Producer Adam Kasper (Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age, Nirvana) and mastered by Bob Ludwig (David Bowie, Paul McCartney, Rolling Stones). That interview culminates in an exclusive performance of the band's song "More Than Friends." Tune in and give it a listen.
