The Creep-O-Rama Podcast
#106 - Murder, Cults, and the Worst Family Tree in Louisiana (True Detective 4-8)

The Creep-O-Rama Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 23, 2026 104:25

We're back in the swamp this week to wrap up a full-scale forensic examination of the most dysfunctional family tree in television history. What started as a simple murder investigation, eventually starts feeling like someone dumped a thousand-piece puzzle onto the floor, set half the pieces on fire, and then whisper, “Good luck. Now get me a beer.” The back half of True Detective Season 1 sees Rust Cohle and Marty Hart venture deeper into the labyrinth of cults, corruption, secret connections, suspicious relatives, suspicious churches, suspicious politicians, suspicious lawn ornaments, and approximately 47 people who should have been put on a watchlist years ago.Every new clue somehow creates six new suspects.Every suspect somehow creates three new cousins.Every cousin somehow belongs to a cult.Nobody is having a good time. The deeper the mystery goes, the more the gang becomes convinced that Louisiana itself might be the true villain. At some point, this feels less like detective work and more like trying to untangle Satan's family ancestry, with a conspiracy board so large that by the end, we're pretty sure Carcosa qualifies as its own zip code, and every Reddit thread about this season transforms into a doctoral thesis written by someone who hasn't slept since 2014. But then True Detective catches everyone off guard by quietly reminding us that the real horror might be becoming an older version of yourself and realizing you never figured anything out. Rude. We watch Rust and Marty as the years pile up, the mistakes linger, the regrets settle in, relationships crumble, and the frozen dinners multiple. Suddenly, the show isn't just about catching monsters, it's about what happens when life catches you. Again. Rude. We celebrate Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as one of the greatest television duos ever assembled. Rust spends most of the season looking like a man who hasn't slept since the Clinton administration, while Marty spends most of the season realizing that every terrible decision he's ever made has achieved sentience. Together they form the most emotionally damaged buddy-cop partnership in history, and we love them for it. This week, we travel down south to crack open the first three episodes of True Detective Season 1 (2014), created by Nic Pizzolatto and directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga, and immediately find ourselves trapped in a Louisiana swamp of murder, cosmic dread, existential philosophy, and enough cigarette smoke to permanently alter local weather patterns. For the first few minutes, we attempt to discuss the seasonlike normal human beings. That plan failed instantly. First-time viewer Josh immediately gets thrown into the deepend of a world where phrases like “The Yellow King,” “Carcosa,” and “Time is a flat circle,” are considered fairly normal, while Matthew McConaughey's performance as Rust Cohle resembles a man who approaches every conversation like he's trying to convince a gas station cashier that reality itself is a clerical error. Rust doesn't solve crimes, he wanders into a room, says something that permanently alters your worldview, and then chain-smokes in silence while the light fades from your eyes. Heavy s@!t.Meanwhile, Woody Harrelson's Marty Hart spends the first three episodes desperately trying to keep the investigation on track while Rust repeatedly attempts to turn every police briefing into a college lecture titled: "Why Existence Was a Mistake: An Introduction."The chemistry between McConaughey and Harrelson remains absolutely legendary. It's less "buddy cop drama" and more: One man attempting to solve a murder while the other attempts to solve reality itself.Of course, because this is a CREEP-O-RAMA episode, things eventually spiral into topics that absolutely do not help solve the case. Like: Rust Cohle as Batman Rust Cohle as every Batman villain simultaneously Whether Gotham City would survive five minutes with Rust as commissioner Why every clue in True Detective sounds like it was discovered by a swamp wizard And whether Louisiana is legally required to be hauntedUltimately, this show feels less like a crime drama and more like someone accidently filmed a nightmare and put it on HBO. So gather round. It's noon somewhere.CREEP-O-RAMA is: Store: CREEP-O-RAMAYouTube: @creep-o-ramaJosh: @joshblevesqueArtwork: @bargainbinblasphemyTheme: @imfigureAudio: @stranjlove

Bonus Episode #69 of BGMania: A Video Game Music Podcast. Today on the show, Bryan reviews Saros, the latest PlayStation 5 exclusive now available from Housemarque, the Finnish studio behind Returnal. Set on the hostile, shape-shifting planet Carcosa under an ominous and ever-present eclipse, the game follows Arjun Devraj, a Soltari Enforcer sent to investigate a lost off-world colony who arrives with his own deeply personal reasons for being there. This Musical Review covers the fast-paced combat loop and roguelite progression systems built around Carcosa's eclipse cycles, the game's striking environmental design and cinematic presentation, the multi-phase Overlord boss encounters that rank among the best the genre has to offer, and an honest look at the story's ambitious but uneven narrative and the emotional distance created by its complicated lead character. The episode also dedicates a full segment to the original score, how the dark, atmospheric, and cinematically driven music supports the tension and isolation of Carcosa at every turn, and what it contributes to moments where the writing alone doesn't quite carry the weight. This week, the internet did what it always does: took something good, something that clearly resonated with real people, and turned it into a battlefield. We're talking about Mixtape — the new game from Beethoven & Dinosaur and Annapurna — and why the so-called "controversy" surrounding it tells you more about gaming culture than it does about the actual game.Because let's be honest: a 2-to-3 hour game with a 95 Metascore on Xbox, thousands of positive Steam reviews, and music from Devo, Joy Division, and the Smashing Pumpkins doesn't NEED the internet's permission to be good. But here we are. We're going to talk about why these faux controversies keep popping up, what they say about who gaming makes room for, and why some people just cannot stand it when a game dares to be an emotional experience without a fail state. Then we get into Saros — Housemarque's spiritual successor to Returnal — and yeah, we have THOUGHTS. Arjun Devraj, Rahul Kohli going absolutely OFF in this performance, cosmic horror on planet Carcosa, and a roguelite loop that somehow got MORE accessible without losing the teeth that made Returnal special. Is it better than Returnal? That's a conversation we need to have.We also sat down with Directive 8020 — the newest entry in Supermassive's Dark Pictures Anthology — which takes the series to space and has y'all fighting alien mimics in the void. Alien meets The Thing in video game form? The story and the Turning Points mechanic are genuinely doing something. The stealth sections though… we'll talk about it.And to close it out: Double Fine — Tim Schafer's legendary studio, makers of Psychonauts and the recently released Kiln — has filed a petition to unionize with the CWA. 42 workers. Microsoft taking a neutral stance. This is big, and it's part of a larger wave rolling through the industry. Workers deserve protection, and this moment matters. We're gonna break it all down.Let's get into it.Twitter/X — https://twitter.com/spawnonmeInstagram — https://instagram.com/spawnonmeYouTube — https://youtube.com/@spawnonmeTwitch — https://twitch.tv/spawnonmeSpotify — https://open.spotify.com/show/spawnonmeApple Podcasts — https://podcasts.apple.com/spawnonme

I 2021 udkom deres mest ambitiøse projekt nogensinde: Returnal.

It's always eclipse-y on Carcosa. This week, we're taking a big look at Housemarque's latest AAA rougelike game, Saros. In the followup to Returnal, Arjun Devraj fights his way through a hostile world where environments shift every time he goes out, and time works in mysterious ways. Weapons, modifiers, and a system of balance make each run unique as the secrets of Carcosa's eclipses are revealed. We've also got a look at Neverness to Everness, a game that's got a bunch of style, but an overwhelming amount of unfortunate mechanics. Then we have Bubsy 4D's demo, an update on GTA IV, and some more discussion on Marathon. Check out the show on BlueSky @MarkersOnTheMap.

This week on Critical Arcade, Dave and Nick are launched into the haunting sci-fi world of Saros, where they awaken on the lost colony world of Carcosa—a planet trapped beneath a permanent eclipse and crawling with horrors that seem determined to make their stay as unpleasant as possible. Taking on the role of Arjun Devraj, a powerful Soltari Enforcer searching for answers about a vanished colony and a mysterious figure tied to his past, they'll fight their way through shifting landscapes, crumbling alien ruins, and relentless waves of terrifying creatures that only get deadlier the deeper they go.But survival won't come easy. In true roguelike fashion, every death resets their journey while permanently altering the world around them, unlocking new abilities, weapons, and upgrades that may—or may not—help them survive the next run. As the mystery of Carcosa begins to unravel, Dave and Nick will need quick reflexes, smart builds, and far more patience than either of them usually possesses. Will Nick become hopelessly addicted to creating the perfect build? Will Dave spend half the episode blaming the controls for his repeated deaths? And just how long will it take both of them to realise that running directly at giant alien monsters is rarely a winning strategy? Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Hey there Travellers, this is for the people who wish to skip scenes due to the trigger warnings. For the first pillar scene dealing with themes of grief and imagery of hanging. In this scene the party is presented with Houndman's body and a basin filled with blood. Through the process they try and apologize to houndman. They find out they must put the blood back into houndman and after they each do this once, Akihiko takes it on himself to do the rest. For a moment he sees houndman's crooked grin before he pixilates again.    For the second pillar dealing with themes of suicide. This part features a mirror trial where characters are forced to witness and cause the death of their own reflections to progress as an inscription says "only one may pass".
