Interview by Kris PetersMelbourne blackened post-metalcore outfit RUN today dropped a surprise EP, True Heaviness Is Time. The band's second offering, True Heaviness Is Time is a dynamic and powerful tour de force that grips as it slams from peak to peak, tackling the pain of existence with an aural violence powered by positivity.Featuring guest vocals from Joel Birch of The Amity Affliction, John Floreani of Trophy Eyes, and Sophie Jest of R.U.B, there's a multitude of diverse sounds on display within the band's own unique take on heavy music - a classic 2000s metalcore sound infused with modern post-black metal.Vocalist Lochlan Watt sat down with HEAVY to discuss the EP."We put out our debut release in 2020 as a studio project that I was spearheading with a producer and a session drummer," he explained of RUN. "From there it had evolved over a few different line-ups into a full band. Then in 2023 we put out a couple of singles as a bit of a testing ground for that, and now finally we have our second EP, True Heaviness Is Time, which is out now."We ask him about the secret nature of the EP drop."People seemed to be really excited about the surprise Bring Me The Horizon album last week," he replied. "I work in this industry and see bands doing the same thing over and over again in terms of having pre-orders and release rollouts and stuff, and I thought because I'm not beholden to anyone else or any record labels with this, why not do it a little bit differently? We've released three of the singles so far, so people have already got 50% of the EP because it's six tracks. If we were to announce the EP now and then say it's coming out in a couple of months… I feel like that would be a little deflationary. You would lose a bit of the excitement. Maybe we could have announced the EP a long time ago while we were rolling out these singles, but the way that the artwork is set up, it slowly reveals the bigger picture throughout the singles. I think it's a more exciting way to do it. You get a little taste of what the bigger picture is with each single, then now, BOOM, you can see the full picture, and you understand what we were doing."In the full interview, Lochlan discusses the relationship between the seasons and the EP, runs through each of the songs individually and explains more about them including where they fit into the EP, talks about the guest artists and how and why they became involved, the limited vinyl run that has the bands debut EP as the B side, upcoming shows and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

This week, we're scratching The Itch to catch up on concerts! It's show season, and we've been out and about experiencing live music from Itch guests, favorites, and new discoveries. KC had a special experience seeing Des Rocs with Jigsaw Youth. KC and Dan caught up with Dead Poet Society and were formally introduced to the nu metal insanity that is Silly Goose. And Aaron saw his new ride-for band Rarity with Trophy Eyes and House & Home, and made a last-minute decision to see Finch and our pals Winona Fighter, despite having no real knowledge of Armor for Sleep or headliner Bayside. We were all over the place, both figuratively and literally, and we had a great time. We hope you do too with this episode. Enjoy. As noted at the top of this episode, a link to Bird's GoFundMe. Interview by Kris PetersNewcastle punk rockers Trophy Eyes have always - deliberately - blurred the line between punk and hardcore. Their sound has an identifiably Trophy Eyes sting, with enough elements from both of those genres to appeal to a broader cross section of music lovers.Of course, when you through in sprinklings of rock and an unmistakably Australian DNA line, the end result is fun.Pure and simple. But during COVID - as it did for many bands and people the world over - the fun stopped for Trophy Eyes.Disillusioned by many cancellations and the inability to directly converse and write and bounce ideas off each other the seeds of doubt became a burden too big to prolong and when the band began working on their new album Suicide And Sunshine - which will be released on June 23 - they were all in agreeance that this would be their final record before leaving Trophy Eyes while there was still some positivity to cling to.Because of that the band decided to take an anything goes attitude throughout the process, deciding that the only rule was that they unanimously wanted this new record to showcase the growth of the band musically while still strongly reflecting on their formative years and direction. The result is an outstanding collection of songs that continues their original ethos of exploring the very boundaries of hardcore and punk music.Vocalist John Floreani joined HEAVY to shed more light."I'm proud of this one," he smiled. "Probably the first time I've been proud of music that I have written pre-release. I'm really happy. I think it's probably our best and really excited for everyone to hear it."Picking up on the comment we push him to elaborate."Most of the time when I put anything out I am my own worst critic," he measured. "I'm always like, fuck, that could have been better or different and I could have done this better. Especially when you sit on an album for about a year by the time it comes out you're already thinking I'm better at songwriting or whatever than when I was putting this out. You kind of put this thing out and go, this is my best work but really you're already onto the next stuff. But this time, no, I'm really happy. I'm proud of it. I think it's a great depiction of Trophy Eyes' entire career rolled into one sound. In the full interview, John talks more about the musical make up of Suicide And Sunshine, the problems they had leading into it, overcoming those problems, blending punk and hardcore, sharing personal feelings through music, tattoos, the title and where it comes from, their upcoming album tour and if, in fact, this is the end for Trophy Eyes.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Against The Current over Zoom video!New York pop-rock band Against The Current have shared an acoustic version of their recent single “blindfolded.” The new version of the song takes the energetic, fiery original track – the first independent release from the band in seven years– and trades it in for a more mellowed-out feel that allows frontwoman Chrissy Costanza's captivating vocals to shine. On the new track, Chrissy shares, “Reimagining our music in different skins has always been central to our identity. The same way we've refused to follow the rules of any one music scene or genre, we allow our music to do the same. ‘blindfolded' (acoustic) lets us tell the same story in different light.”The initial release of “blindfolded” was featured on Spotify's All New Rock and Fierce Femmes, Apple Music's The New Rock and Breaking Rock, Amazon Music's Fresh Rock, and other notable playlists, as well as landing the band as cover artists on Spotify's All New Rock playlist.Against The Current are getting ready to head out on the road for Nightmares & Daydreams World Tour alongside Trophy Eyes and special guests Yours Truly.Against The Current have earned accolades and a faithful fan following with their brand of pop, rock, and indie sounds. Founded in 2011 by charismatic singer Chrissy Costanza alongside Dan Gow (guitar, vocals) and Will Ferri (drums, keyboards, vocals), the band quickly established themselves as an original force all their own with thrilling live shows, EPs including 2015's top 3 Billboard Heatseekers breakthrough Gravity and 2021's fan-favorite Fever, and two studio albums In Our Bones and Past Lives. ATC released an exclusive song – “Legends Never Die” – for the 2017 League Of Legends World Championship. The song has been certified Gold in the United States and Silver in the United Kingdom, has over 464 million streams on Spotify, and the video currently boasts over 235 million views on YouTube.Against The Current has spent much time either in the studio or on the road, headlining world tours including the 2017-2018 Past Lives World Tour and the current Nightmares & Daydreams World Tour, and sharing international stages with such artists as Fall Out Boy, Good Charlotte, and more.We want to hear from you! YEAH THE BONES! An expression of appreciation fans of Sydney hardcore punks Bare BOnes shout with pride any time these lads are in the closest vicinity and we'll be screaming it more often now that they've unleashed their sophomore album Rival Minds upon the world which is tearing up Australia's heavy music scene and proving these guys are the next big thing in genre-crossing rock and metal. Frontman Tom Kennedy is welcomed back to co-hosting duties this week chatting all about the album, it's "mature" sound and how they've pushed themselves harder since sharing the stage with big name acts like Prophets of Rage, Stone Sour and Rise Against over the past couple of years. The lads are here to prove they've got more than just a heavy, party atmosphere sound and they're not afraid to express it with their latest offering (which you should be all over by now) Podcast host Browny also takes a look at Polaris' new single 'Masochist', their forthcoming album The Death of Me and highly anticipated tour alongside some pretty big names in metalcore. There's also plenty of new tunes this week from Ocean Sleeper, Fever 333, Violent Soho, Once Human and Raised Fist, throwbacks from Crystal Lake and Trophy Eyes + heaps more! #WoSUATW #BareBones #TomKennedy #ResistRecords #AustralianBands #HeavyMetal #Metalcore #Hardcore #HardcorePunk #OceanSleeper #TrophyEyes #KillswitchEngage #Polaris #CrystalLake #TheLastMartyr #Fever333 #RaisedFist #OnceHuman #ViolentSoho #MusicPodcast #WallOfSoundAU

S2E4 | Consistency! One thing I have learned in my life is that success can be boring. Successful people live rigid lives. When building a Tribe you need to have engaging content. Without it, why would people follow you. You have to have a consistent message, or how can you lead. In this episode I talk about our content schedule for our Addicted to Podcasting Facebook group. I talk about why engagement is so important to the Facebook algorithm. It is all about engaging content, being boring, and being consistent. Enjoy! S2E3 | Automation In this episode we deep dive into automating Social Media. The most important part of social media content is staying consistent. This is always something that I have struggled with. Working a 50 hour a week job, 15 hours a week on 3T Fitness, trying to grow Age of Radio, working on other projects, and so forth; how in the heck can I find time to stay consistent with Social Media. Well we need a plan, content, and automation. I take a quick look into what our plan is and what tool we are going to use to help with the automation. Today, we're talking about touring. My good friend, Griffin Elliot, popped in for an informative chat about the life of a tour manager. I feel like I see Griff more than my own family because he's on the road so much. This time, he was fresh off of the Rockstar Disrupt Fest with Trophy Eyes and one day away from a much needed break in Cancun. An interesting topic has started to emerge on the podcast--if you want to work in the music industry in any capacity, the best way to start out is to work for free and do it because you love it.
We have a jampacked special episode for you this week to celebrate The Amity Affliction's upcoming Heaven And Hell east coast tour featuring Underoath, Crossfaith and Pagan, who, all join the podcast for a chat. The main event is The Amity Affliction's Ahren Stringer who discusses the band's intentions with the Brisbane leg of the tour in which they're hoping to turn the Heaven and Hell Festival into an annual event, if the punters get behind it. He also chats with podcast host Browny about the year that was the Misery saga and the strange, yet totally expected reactions fans had when they first heard the release, some disapproving of the drastic change in style, only for them to come back around the longer they sat on it. He also talks about the band's future, the next release and he reflects on their earlier "glory" days (pun intended) and how far they've come since then. Spencer Chamberlain of Underoath calls in to chat about their last appearance in Australia for UNIFY and why they didn't make it to the west coast of Australia for their Erase Me album cycle. Kenta 'Ken' Koie from Crossfaith also reflects on their UNIFY set back in January and gives us all an insight into their partying lifestyle while Pagan frontwoman Nikki Brumen takes a look back at their hectic year which has seen them flying to dominate UK audiences, gain massive popularity in Australia and what direction they'll be taking their next release (and if we'll hear some new material on this tour). Plus we play a stack of tracks from the above-mentioned bands and kick it all off with Thornhill's new song 'Nurture', which no doubt fans will hear when they play alongside Trophy Eyes, Make Them Suffer, Southeast Desert Metal, Void of Vision and Endless Heights in Brisbane. #WoSUATW #TheAmityAffliction #AmityAffliction #TAA #AhrenStringer #Misery #HeavenAndHellTour #SpencerChamberlain #Underoath #KentaKoie #Crossfaith #NikkiBrumen #Pagan #AustralianBands #Metal #Metalcore #BlackMetal #MelodicMetal #Thornhill #MusicPodcast #WallOfSoundAU

Summer is in full swing, and with it comes an avalanche of summer music festivals. In its inaugural run, the Rockstar Disrupt Festival hosts a stacked lineup, including Newcastle, Australia, rock act Trophy Eyes. Vocalist John Floreani took some time out after one of the band's recent sets to chat with Kiel Hauck about his new solo album Sin, the sonic evolution of Trophy Eyes, and how festival life compares to a typical tour. Listen in!

As Trophy Eyes celebrate the release of their new record, The American Dream, we look back at our recent chat with singer John Floreani. Recorded earlier this year, John tells Jess Hope how the writing process helps him confront some of his more darker memories and experiences. Don't Fret Club podcasts discuss topics of mental health. If you or someone you know is affected by any of the issues discussed in this podcast, please reach out to speak to a profession for support. Australia's pop punk scene is in great hands, especially with Trophy Eyes at the helm, their new album The American Dream is the topic of conversation in Episode #49 of Wall of Sound: Up Against The Wall with frontman John Floreani on co-hosting duties. The band, while still young into their careers, have achieved so much in a short amount of time, worldwide success, signing to a top label and unfortunate accumulation of hate/negativity from so-called fans. John explains that they didn't start the band to be famous, they just wanted to release music that they liked playing and if people enjoyed it along the way, so be it. What they didn't expect was the wave of unruly fans who think they know what's best for the band and how their sense of entitlement really puts a dampener on it all. No one wants to be told they suck or that they're making music one person isn't a fan of and (on a far worse end of the spectrum) that someone thinks they should die because they're doing something different to what they started with. Its keyboard warriors and scum like that who really put a dampener on the music industry, but Trophy Eyes are doing their part to stand their ground and fight back, calling out the "haters" with new track 'You Can Count On Me' and a new stance on how the music industry perceives them. John Floreani more than happily addresses the current state of music with podcast host Browny and how the band's maturing over the years has assisted the band's progression in sound and direction. Their new album kicks arse and should be heard by everyone. Also, being a pop-punk hero, our 'Ultimate Pop Punk Song' is back and John more than happily joins the likes of Jordan Pundik (New Found Glory), Scott Eckel (Makeout) and Mitch Chamberlain (Satellites) by contributing his lyrics to the cause. If you're new to the idea, take a listen to how it all plays out. There's also plenty of pop punk goodness to get you through the day including New Music from Hands Like Houses, twenty one pilots, Stateside, Eat Your Heart Out, Grizzlyshark and Alkaline Trio, throwbacks from +44, Satellites, Paramore, Green Day, Tonight Alive and Introvert + former Heroes for Hire frontman Brad Smith recalls some of his favourite memories whilst playing in the band and how things have changed since his very public ousting back in 2013. #WoSUATW #TrophyEyes #JohnFloreani #PopPunk #PopRock #AustralianBands #StadiumRock #HandsLikeHouses #Satellites #HeroesForHire #BradSmith #EatYourHeartOut #Stateside #TonightAlive #JaredLeto #ThirtySecondsToMars #TheAmericanDream #30SecondsToMars #Introvert #Grizzlyshark #Paramore #GreenDay #Plus44 #AlkalineTrio #twentyonepilots #21Pilots #Podcast #MusicPodcast #WallOfSoundAU

Mental health issues aren’t a new concept in our society today, least of all in the performing arts. Newcastle’s Eat Your Heart Out address several topics around mental health struggles and being stuck in your own head in their new album Mind Games. Penning their experiences and setting it to music is what the band know. “Not enough people do it [talk about their issues],” says the band’s guitarist, Will Moore. “People bury a lot of stuff and it causes issues, it has for us. For us it’s important to recognise there are issues and I think we like to talk about it as a broader thing outside of mental illness.“It’s about saying it as it is, how we feel it, so we can be the truest to ourselves.”“I struggle talking about my mental health,” says bassist Dom Cant, “Music is my outlet to cope.”Though music is an escape for many musicians, Eat Your Heart Out being no different, there must be a certain set of challenges for vocalist Caitlin Henry, who at the front of the band, is channelling all the energy and struggles of not only her group, but the audience who relate to their music. “I think, it’s like, good to feel you can be this voice for other people to connect to, to know they can relate to,” she says. “Not everybody gets the platform to help other people,” adds Moore. “I don’t feel we’ve helped anybody in that way but if someone can talk about it, that’s the first step to getting help.”Heavy though the message of Mind Games is, it’s great music first and foremost and songs like ‘Conscience’ and ‘Rock Bottom’ are getting the band noticed. Eat Your Heart Out have already shared stages with some big acts, touring with the likes of Trophy Eyes and Hands Like Houses, with Simple Plan next on the cards in April. “It’s the first big tour we’ve got,” says Moore, “It’s pretty nerve-wracking.” “I’m nervous!” exclaims Henry, “We have some practice to do to make sure we’re captivating and the best version of ourselves.”
There's so much change happening in the scene, you gotta be happy that Ian and Dave are here to navigate you through everything going on...right? Meh, maybe not, but they're still gonna do it! There's a lot to talk about and this episode of Ian Hates Music. Some in humor (Evanescence fans attack) and not so humorous (accusations against band members). You know what to do.*This episode was recorded before more sexual "misconduct" accusations came out and Warped Tour announced the final tour would be in 2018. We'll talk about all of this in next week's episode. Including, the ridiculous idea that MCR would reunite to do the final Warped Tour. In anticipation of Sum 41's new album releasing this week, Adam and Mike go back in time to review 2011's 'Screaming Bloody Murder' - which they consider their best album to date. But if you can look past that, you'll find that the band is ever-evolving who has taken inspiration from many different bands and genres. Find out what we thought about their latest album in this retro-review.Ending out the show, Adam reviews albums from Trophy Eyes and the 10 year anniversary demos compilation from My Chemical Romance and Mike shares some of his progress from therapy. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/theskinnywithmikeandadam/support
