eCareDiary's caregiving expert, Margery Pabst Steinmetz, speaks to Jon Braddock, speaker, professional advisor/coach, and author of “Click Here When I Die,” about Death Etiquette and how critical it is to plan for death in today's digital age.
Jonathan Braddock is an author, speaker and consultant with a background in finance and insurance. When his father-in-law passed away four years ago, it took Jon and the family two years to organise and uncover all of his details including online accounts, passwords, solicitors, wills, insurance and more. Not only was the process time consuming, it meant out of pocket expenses as well. Realising others had similar experiences, Jon created an online platform to help people record everything a family needs to access and do after their passing. In this episode, Jon speaks about his business, “My Life and Wishes”, shares the facts about starting conversations with your family and discusses the idea behind his latest book.
Jon & Michelle Braddock were faced with an almost insurmountable challenge when Michelle's father passed away unexpectedly at home on Labor Day, 2013. For the next 10 months they tried to piece together all of his investment accounts, safe deposits boxes, insurance policies, online accounts, etc. It was during this time that they envisioned a better way to prepare for that moment when death occurs. Jon & Michelle created a program called My Life and Wishes that helps survivors easily discover where every important document, file, password, and account is stored, and be able to retrieve the information from one location. Jon shares their story in this podcast episode, and will make you laugh as he challenges you to consider if you've "thoughtfully prepared" so that your family doesn't feel unnecessary stress and grief. For more information, please visit their website at www.mylifeandwishes.com Jon has also written a book called, Click Here When I Die, that describes in detail what steps need to be taken to put your personal affairs in order before it's too late. You can purchase it here on Amazon. Jon offers a free guide "10 Things You Need to Know" on his website at www.jonathanbraddock.com. If you’re talking to somebody over drinks, and you want them to do a spit-take, ask them this: “So… how are you preparing for the day you die?” Disclaimer: We’re joking. Please don’t actually do this with anyone. Except maybe your closest friend. Or, to be safe, just don’t do this with anyone, period. The fact is, out of the two inevitable things in life – death and taxes – we love to complain about the latter… but almost never talk about the former. But we should.
