Today's guest is the founder and current Chief Visionary Officer of BNI. If you aren't aware, BNI is the world's largest business networking organization. He's also a New York Times bestselling author. As if that weren't impressive enough, he's been called the “Father of Modern Networking” by both Forbes and CNN. Are you excited yet? We certainly are. Dr. Ivan Misner is here to talk with us about his business, books and creating a harmonious life. Forget About BalanceYou might be skeptical about the idea of forgetting about balance. Isn't that what we're all aiming for, after all? It might be, but as Ivan points out, harmony is both a more practical and more achievable goal. It's not just semantics, either. When you think of balance, you probably picture an old-timey scale. That's not how life works, though. To begin with, you're likely juggling far more than two things. Beyond that, not everything in your life should have equal weight.Instead, the aspects of your life—work, family, friends, school, self-care, spirituality and anything else you want to include—should exist in harmony. Steps Toward HarmonyIvan highlights three critical steps to take toward a more harmonious life, although there are many more:Be present.Create margins in your life. Hold on and let go.Being present is a primary aspect of mindfulness, which is something that many of us practice. Of course, being fundamental doesn't make it easy, but when you're successfully present for your family, coworkers or anyone else you might be interacting with, you exude a sense of harmony. When Ivan says to create margins in your life, he means to give yourself space. He does that by taking a day, usually once a week, that he dedicates to himself. He might still spend time with family, but he also relaxes by the pool or watches a good movie. The final step Ivan cites is to hold on and let go. That might seem contradictory, but it's necessary. None of us have unlimited time or energy. Hold on to the things that align with your values. Let go of the things that don't.To learn more about BNI, you can check out the organization's website. For more information about Ivan, including more about some of the phenomenal books he's written, you can take a look at his personal site. Thank you for taking the time to join us! We hope you enjoy this discussion as much as we did.

Today our expert guest is Dr. Ivan Misner, the founder and Chief Visionary Officer of BNI, the world's largest business networking organization. Founded in 1985, the organization now has over ten thousand chapters worldwide. Last year alone, BNI generated 11.5 million referrals resulting in 16.3 billion dollars worth of business for its members. Called “the father of networking” by both Forbes and CNN, Dr. Ivan is considered one of the world's leading experts on business networking, and has been a keynote speaker for major corporations across the world. He's been featured in the LA Times, Wallstreet Journal, New York Times, CNN, BBC, Today Show, and more. Dr. Ivan wasn't always drawn to this line of work – in fact, it didn't come very naturally to him. In junior high school, Ivan had run for student council two years in a row and lost soundly each time. As a freshman in high school, his class was picking a student council representative and not a single person volunteered. So the teacher looked around the room and picked Ivan. The entire room groaned and, despite how hurt he felt, he knew at that moment that he would have to change people's opinions about him. It was the point when he realized that he could be a leader, that the best way to lead is to pour into people, and that when you do, great things happen. When Dr. Ivan and his friends needed referrals for their businesses, he put together a referral group among them where he only allowed one person per profession. When someone approached him whose profession was already spoken for, they asked him to help them set up their own group. Things snowballed from there, and within a year, one group had turned into 20. In his recent book, Who's in Your Room?, Ivan explored the true importance of your network. Imagine that your mind is a room with only one door, and that door only opens one way. When someone enters, they can't leave. When you think of it that way, wouldn't you want to be more selective about the people who you let enter? When you start being more intentional about who you let in, you are much more likely to curate the life that you want. So how does that process begin? Start by hiring a “doorman.” This is your subconscious mind. If you don't let this guard your mind, then anyone can come in. Know your values. If you don't know what you value, you can't evaluate who you let into your life. Identify your deal breakers: the behaviors you absolutely will not allow into your room. If someone is in your room already, you can't kick them out, but you can stop fueling them. If they like to stir up drama, just don't feed it by giving it attention. Who you let into your world – your room – defines who you are and who you become. It's time to start being more intentional about our networks and how they shape us.   The Biggest Helping: Today's Most Important Takeaway “I think it's really important for people to understand their network. Their personal network is a beacon of hope in a sea of fear. It is where you go to for support. The people in your network are the people you go to for help, for guidance, for emotional support, for referrals – obviously, in BNI, but for so much more. And people either get frozen by fear or focused by fear, and I think your network helps you get focused by the fear that is out there.”   --   Thank you for joining us on The Daily Helping with Dr. Shuster. In this week's episode, Amrit interviews Dr. Ivan Misner, Ph.D. in Organizational behaviour, the founder and chief visionary officer of BNI (Business Network International) the world's largest business networking organization, a columnist for Entrepreneur.com, a keynote speaker, and a NY Times bestselling author of many books including the latest one “Who's in Your Room: The Secret to Creating Your Best Life”In “Who's In Your Room”, Dr. Misner shares how the quality of your life greatly depends on the people who surround you: https://amz.run/4jTbAmrit and Dr. Ivan Misner, talk about the significance of working in your flame and not in your wax, the power of networking and the importance of having relationships in this dynamic world we live in.Dr. Ivan Misner states you need to work in your flame and not in your wax. This means, you must work hard on what you most love to do in your business to reach success. He strongly believes you can take steps in your journey toward truly loving what you do for a living. He started a management consulting business in 1983. At the end of 1984, he needed new business and had to find a way to engender more referrals. So he decided to create his own networking group with people he knew and trusted, and wanted to refer business to. This group integrated business with relationships under one core value of giving first. By the end of the year there were 20 groups and he needed to start a plan to scale. The organization now has over 10,000 chapters throughout the globe. And he keeps on doing what he most loves to do: helping others.Dr. Misner talks about core values as the fundamental beliefs and guiding principles that dictate behavior and help people better understand expectations within the organizational context. BNI's core values start with Givers Gain, one of the best attitudes you can have to live your life. Embracing this philosophy of giving first will change your life and those around you. And when it changes enough lives, it will change the world. Genuine love towards one another. This is the kind of vision that people need to establish with whatever business they start. He elucidates that being a good receiver is vital. This ensures the philosophy works and leads to a life of infinite giving. You must accept it is alright to gain, if not you will find yourself out of resources, and the giving will stop. It is essential that the givers also gain what they need so that they can give over and over. In this way, infinite giving becomes a part of who you are in all you do. Giving first is fundamental. But, you cannot constantly give at your own expense. They dive deep into the importance of cultivating relationships and networking, and the VCP mindset and skill set to help you do so. It is important to cultivate long-term relationships and you need the proper mindset to do so. You must be visible and credible, and once they know who you are and are good at what you do, they will be willing to refer business to you. Networking up with people who are leagues beyond yourself in business depends on your authenticity and willingness to help them.Focusing on the other person and creating value to them can help forge long-term relationships.Building long-term relationships and having a network is extremely important for you to live a meaningful life and transition through this crazy world. The people in your network are going to be the ones that will help you in difficult times. “Your network is a beacon of hope in a sea of fear”You need a mindset to cultivate these relationships. First people have to know who you are and what you do. Secondly they must know you are good at it. If they know who you are and you are good at what you do, they will be willing to refer business to you. You can build relationships in developing referrals. If you want to network up and connect with people who are leagues beyond yourself in business, Dr. Ivan insists you must not sell to them, instead be authentic and ask how you can help them. Focusing on the other person and creating value to them can help forge long-term relationships.“If you are always the most successful in the room, you are hanging out in the wrong rooms. All rooms are ok, but you need to find somewhere you can network up”About Dr. Ivan Misner:Dr. Ivan Misner is the Founder and Chief Visionary Officer of BNI, the world's largest business networking organization. What is Amazon's impact on recruitment and the labor market? Where are wages headed? This episode was recorded from “mountain” to “mountain” with Finnian in Aspen, CO, and Kathryn in her hometown of Sun Valley, ID. We bring you nine mantras to create more intentionality into your life, including more intentional relationships, leadership, and love. Finnian reminds us that the time for Intentionality is NOW; the world is changing at a rapid pace and our roles as humans are also shifting. The new generations will be charged with the task of creating sustainable peace and wellbeing on our planet. Here are the nine mantras for a more intentional life: Mantra #1: Don’t put your own pressure/projection on to the younger generation (let them make their own choices) Mantra #2: Be careful of your language, even if it is positive (as it can create labels and even “conditional love”) Mantra #3: Life is not linear, and there is no rush! Mantra #4: Take out your emotional “garbage” on an ongoing basis (don’t suppress emotions) Mantra #5: Use “tools” to release and process emotions: 1) shaking/movement, 2) breathwork, 3) meditation, 4) emotional clearing, 5) grounding, and 6) serotonin-building sunlight. Mantra #6: Think of spirituality purely as a way to know yourself better. Spirituality is also a means to experience the wonders of life. Mantra #7: Be open, not rigid (see tools in Mantra #5) Mantra #8: Use curiosity to connect across the generational gaps Mantra #9: Choose love over fear. This link discusses the “map of consciousness” and tells the story of the “pond skim”: https://makeeverythingfun.com/thoughts-map-conciousness/ More about Finnian Kelly Finnian Kelly is a world-renowned keynote speaker on Intentionality, a retreat facilitator, and a 1:1 Executive Coach. Dr. Ivan Misner shares his expertise as one of the world’s most effective networkers and talks about the nuts and bolts of creating real relationships that drive real revenue. Learn why the quality of the people you surround yourself with will determine so much of your life and business and how to ensure your inner circle aligns with your core values, plus tips for networking in a way that leads to long term business development success.   Mo asks Dr. Ivan Misner: What is your big idea on how business development experts can grow their book of business, their relationships, and their careers? The quality of the people you surround yourself with determines the quality of your life. Imagine that you live your life in one room with one door and it’s one-way entrance only. If that were true would you be more selective about the people that you let into your life? The room is a metaphor for your mind, and when you have a relationship with someone, business or personal, their fingerprints are all over your brain for the rest of your life. This is why it’s vital to be very selective on the front end. Your experiences with people, the good and the bad, will affect your decisions for the rest of your life. You have to ask yourself whether a client is going to be worth the money and the psychic energy you are going to invest in the relationship. The selectivity starts with understanding your personal values. If you don’t know what’s important in your life you will take anyone that comes to your door. Clients don’t have to have the exact same values as you, they just can’t be incongruent with the things you believe are the most important. You’re better off turning down a client or an employee if you believe they will take you in the opposite direction of your personal values. One of the most important values in Dr. Misner’s organization BNI is that giver’s gain. If you want to be able to get business from people you have to be willing to give them business. Networking is not a get-rich-quick scheme, it’s a way to build a solid foundation for a strong, successful business. It’s an attitude and not an expectation. Creating a great organizational culture changes that organization forever. Your business’s core values should be short and repeated constantly.   Mo asks Dr. Ivan Misner: How do we grow our book of business? There is a networking disconnect, where everybody goes to networking events wanting to sell but nobody is there to buy. Networking is all about relationships, it’s more like farming than hunting. Avoid selling the first time you meet someone. Plant the seed of the relationship first and then cultivate it over time. Ivan recommends the 24/7/30 follow-up system. Within 24 hours of meeting someone, send them a note and let them know that you enjoyed getting to know them. Within 7 days find them on social media and make a meaningful connection with them. Go where they are, not where you want to be. Within 30 days reach out to them and ask to have a conversation about what they do. The whole time you avoid selling to them and focus instead on just building the relationship. Start with the other person in mind and get to know them as a human being. It’s not what you know or who you know, it’s how well you know each other that counts. The important thing is not about who is in your database, it’s who is willing to help you if you asked. If you follow up in a meaningful way with the goal of building a real relationship, it’s not going to feel formulaic or contrived. Helping and authenticity are key. Infinite giving does not mean that you’re an infinite victim. Giving can take all kinds of forms and there are a number of ways your giving will come back to you.   Mo asks Dr. Ivan Misner: How do we develop more and deeper relationships? BNI now has over 276,000 members and over the course of 2020, those members generated over $16 billion in business. A one-to-one conversation with people periodically is the best way to develop a relationship with them. The Gains exchange is a great way to deepen a relationship with someone you know. Write down your goals, accomplishments, interests, networks, and skills, and find out what you have in common. Ivan tells the story of two BNI members that were initially skeptical of the Gains exchange and discovered something they had in common that became the basis for a great relationship. People are usually open to the Gains exchange. You don’t have to frame the one-to-one beforehand if you approach it the right way. The perfect way to ask the Gains questions is to model it. Start with your goals, accomplishments, interests, networks, and skills, and show them what you want to know about them. The modeling provides the example instead of a perfectly designed question. Near the end of the conversation reiterate what you learned about them and open the idea of having another conversation in the future to connect on things that are important to them. If the other person has a need that you can help with by sharing a resource, that becomes the perfect reason to follow up. Before you ask for something, you should invest in the relationship with them first.   Mo asks Dr. Ivan Misner: How do we hack our own habits to keep building our relationships? Instead of saying we’re busy, we should think about our life being full instead. The foundation of networking is the VCP process. First, you have to be visible, then you move to credibility where people know who you are and that you’re good at it. Only then can you move to profitability. Most people try to leapfrog the process and go from being completely invisible and straight to profitability. When networking, you need to be aware of where you are in that process with that person because that will dictate the way you communicate with them. You always have to work on all three aspects of the process to maintain your business development efforts. Consistency is key. The biggest mistake that businesses make is doing a thousand things six times instead of doing six things a thousand times. It’s about doing fewer things and doing them well and not stretching yourself too thin. Work in your flame instead of your wax. Hire people to do the things you don’t want to do so you can focus on the things you want to be doing to carry your business forward. Ivan color codes his calendar and is very strict about his timelines. That’s how he knows what kind of day he’s going to have and he can see if he’s working on what he should be working on over the course of the week. Business people are constantly chasing bright shiny objects. Stop chasing the bright shiny distractions and focus on just doing the same things effectively over and over again.   Mo shares his insights from the habits of Dr. Ivan Misner. Ivan Misner is the Chief Visionary Officer of BNI, the world’s largest networking group. There is probably no one else on the planet who knows more about building a valuable network or relationships. We need to be very careful about who we allow into our inner circle. This can include strategic partners that we work with to grow our businesses, the clients we work with, to the people in our personal lives. Think about your current ecosystem and about who shares your core values and who you want to invest your time with. The people you allow into your metaphorical room you can’t kick out, so it’s important to be cautious on the front end. When you have negative experiences with people you don’t get that time back, and those experiences will influence your decisions for the rest of your life. Be very critical of the people you let into your life and be willing to let people go when you discover that they are not a fit. The core values of your organization have nothing to do with what’s on people’s resumes. Your core values should be concise and clear. When you start to get to know somebody the Gains exchange is a great way to build the foundation of the relationship. Enter into a dialogue about your goals, accomplishments, interests, networks, and skills to facilitate a great conversation. Model the response you are looking for by sharing your Gains with the other person and then ask them to reciprocate.   Mentioned in this Episode: GrowBIGPlaybook.com ivanmisner.com bni.com
