Before we start, if you're company has a hard time explaining what it does you can hire me to do that in 60-90 seconds with an explainer animation. Go to drive80.com or email me at mike@drive80.com to learn more. Formed in 1990, Sense Field was one of several contemporary bands to popularize the post-hardcore or "emo" subgenre. The band was initially signed to Revelation Records, releasing three albums, and later signed with Warner Bros. in 1996. However, problems within the label caused the band to sit in limbo for five years as the label was re-staffed multiple times. The band was eventually released from their contract and Sense Field won the right to re-record the album they had originally written for Warner Bros. Records. They later broke up in 2004. They reunited for Revelation Records 25 Year Anniversary Show. And played again for Jon Bunch's Tribute concert in 2016. To this day I rock out to Overstand and Outlive The Man on a weekly basis because they are fucking bangers. I was lucky enough to get guitarist Chris Evenson on the Skype and this is what we chat about: Finding their scene The Revelation van Playing shows with harder sounding bands Writing Building Getting mixed by Andy Wallace Overstand's guitar riff Signing to Warner Bros What Save Yourself did to the band Jon joining Further Seems Forever Playing Revelation 25 How they got the singers for the Jon Bunch Tribute concert And a ton more This week's sponsor is Mint 400 Records. Episode 94, A Tribute to Jon Bunch. To give some context, last year at this time, episode 57 of the podcast with Jon Bunch was to my knowledge the last interview Jon did. It was incredibly sad but also a place for people to learn about Jon forever. I was so honored to have spoken to him and be able to share his story. Last March there was a benefit show in Santa Ana California for Jon’s son Jack. It had an amazing line up of bands and people traveled from all over the world for the show. I had the pleasure of being in southern California for the event and saw first hand the community that came out for Jon. Seizing the moment, a friend of Washed Up Emo, Ed Curley, took it upon himself to interview people in the crowd. From fans, bands and those involved in the event, Ed took time to ask about Jon, the event and what it meant. You’ll hear many common themes and many kind words said about Jon. All walks of life and those that knew him for 30 years or none at all. It was truly a celebration of music, friends and family. Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/washedupemo)
Fifty is a nice big round number so let's do something big, shall we? How about Dan Weyandt's first podcast? Dan, Jeff Gretz and Scott Mellinger of Zao are laying out the entire new album "The Well Intentioned Virus" track by track. This chapter will cover the first five tracks. Seth W joins me to let you all in on a contest give away that ATSG, Skull Toaster (and even MetalBandCampGiftClub) will be collaborating on. Listen to the rules and listen closely to the podcast. The answer is in here. Chapter 50 Music: all Zao from the upcoming album The Well Intentioned Virus Xenophobe "Weeping Vessel" (Working Title: "Leviathan") Dan's wife miscarriage and Jeff hears Dan's perspective for the first time. "A Well Intentioned Virus" (Working Title: "Devil") Zao had difficulty in tracking this song. Lots of perspective. "Broken Pact Blues" (Working Title: "Fire") Touching story about Dan's brother Matt...and Scott's dog...and Anthrax lyrics...and Scott's dog again... "Jinba Ittai" (Working Title: "Flesh") The rider and the horse become one. Mortality. Jon Bunch. This gets heavy. "Apocalypse" Scott tells us a bit of how the guitar led to the lyrics. We then somehow get into the Paris shootings and the tragic murder of Dimebag Darrell. Xenophobe, again. This week, Mel takes the podcast in a different direction, talking "film fallout" with his oldest friend Domingo, and his wife Melanie. And his daughter, Regan, of course. (Also: I promise I only recorded in the car for the first three minutes). Special shoutout to the band Sense Field, who inspired the title/direction. R.I.P. Jon Bunch. http://www.ocweekly.com/music/jon-bunch-memorial-concert-brings-out-a-whos-who-of-the-classic-emo-and-hardcore-scene-6974590 Extra special shoutout to Will Barratt, Jason Miller, Alycia Lourim, Domingo Baragan III, Melanie House, and Regan Christine House. @upstartfilm on Twitter/Instagram
You can thank Cloud Nothings and Desaparecidos for The Starting Line’s most recent 7” entitled “Anyways.” Kenny spoke highly of those two bands and how it got him excited to write in the style of The Starting Line again. It’s only fitting that Kenny is the next podcast after Jon Bunch spoke so highly of him in episode 57. Kenny straddles that line of being old enough to know the past but be involved in the mid 00 emo wave and has some amazing perspective on it. I learned a lot and have a great respect for his music. This sucks. I didn't think I would have to consider rebroadcasting any of these interviews that I have done over the course of the past few years but Jon Bunch passed away recently and I immediately thought this was appropriate to revisit the incredible conversation I had at Jon's house back in 2013. My thoughts go out to his family and everyone affected by this tremendous loss. He was one of my favorite vocalists of all time and we should all collectively thank his memory for his contributions to our little scene. I will never forget that the first thing Jon did when he picked up the phone for the podcast. He asked about my life and took the time to find out more about Washed Up Emo before the interview even started. I was blown away at how humble he was but also so proud of his life's work. It’s an honor to be able to present a small slice of Jon that many of his friends and family know so well. I count myself included. This podcast is supposed to be evergreen. You can listen in 5 years or in 10 years and know a good chunk of that band or era and some context to the scene and a way to look back but also look ahead. Jon was that last point to a T. He was so happy talking about the history but also his new music and what was next. Sadly, this was the last interview Jon did. I can only hope those close or those who have no idea who Jon Bunch was take and learn something from one of the most important voices in not only the independent scene but music in general. I am eternally grateful Jon took the time to talk with me about his life that will thankfully live on in aural form so someone can stumble upon Jon's music forever.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/washedupemo)

On this latest exciting entry into the Cinepunx saga we talk recent films, new programs, and our own lives! It’s great! Hey, thanks for checking out another episode of the Earth’s Mightiest (film related, punk entrenched, and POC produced) Podcast! First off, this episode was recorded 2/2 in the morning, before the world learned of the untimely passing of Jon Bunch. SENSEFIELD was a very important band to me growing up, and I continued to follow is career later as well. I did not know Jon, but many folks I am friends with did and remarked that he was as pleasant a human as we was a truly impressive vocalist. Hearing about his passing inspired me to being the episode with a SENSEFIELD song, which I know is paltry tribute to such a great man, but that is what I got. This episode we discussed some films we have seen recently, talked about some support and messages we have received of late, and then spent some time sharing development both in our personal life and on Cinepunx.com. It would be worth it for me to write a long and in depth show notes piece, much like Justin Lore does for our magical sister show Horror Business, but as I say on the show, I find audio editing just really draining, so instead here are some significant links: This is Justin Gray who designed our new shirts This is a new film we discuss which has Pat Healy in it Videogram is super cool, and you can hear some of Magnus’ music during the episode Joseph A. Gervasi does a LOT of stuff like LOUD! FAST! PHILLY! DIABOLIK DVD EXHUMED FILMS Finally, thanks again to the awesome AMALGAM COFFEE &COMICS SHOP for being great hosts and so awesome Ok so lots of links, lots of new writing The post CINEPUNX Episode 44: TALKING ABOUT OURSELVES appeared first on Cinepunx.
Jon Bunch has been playing in bands for almost 30 years now. Bands such as Reason to Believe, Sense Field, and Further Seems Forever have always been in a my earphones on whatever personal listening device I have had over the years. Jon has a new band and a new release to talk about. I did the interview before I could get the chance to play you all some music, so I will feature the new Lucky Scars ep "Rock and Roll Foul" around the October 23rd release date so please stay tuned for that!! Thanks Jon for the talk!! This is quite a special episode for me as I got to sit down with one of my favorite vocalists, Jon Bunch. We discuss his time with Sensefield and his "hit single" experience, touring with his new band War Generation and being present.
