David NeSmith has been part of some groundbreaking bands in emo. He's not afraid to say it throughout the episode, either! From Maximillian Colby's screamo days to the dissonance of Sleepytime Trio and his work with Bats & Mice. They all scream not just emo but a need to create and share new sounds still to this day. Dave made a playlist you can check out on WashedUpEmo.com or below on the discography of his career. Dive in. The new Bats & Mice record is called Ps: Seriously. Today on the podcast, we welcome back Matt Pryor. Matt is on to talk about his recently announced memoir he wrote called Red Letter Days. It's up for pre-order right now, or if you're in the future, head over to Washed Up Books to get one! Matt and I discuss how he started writing, how he feels about it now, how his adversity and stories helped him deal with many things, and how he's better for it. Quick note: We mentioned a guy named Frank early on. We were talking about Frank Turner, the musician who helped Matt start the process of writing. This has been a fantastic partnership where Matt trusted me as I dove deeper into book publishing, and he did the same by bearing his soul in this book. I hope you enjoy the book, or if you're coming back after reading and listening to this, I hope it adds to the pages you've read. Either way, thanks for supporting Washed Up Emo. Today on the podcast we welcome Ben Green from Fairweather and Ivakota Recording Studios. Ben and I speak about his time growing up, being exposed to music, forming Fairweather, struggles in the mid 00s, and was really candid about not just the successes but the mistakes the band made. Fairweather has new music that you should check out and enjoy the many stories about Equal Vision Records and someone named Dan, who is the GM over there and a dear friend of Ben and I. Also we get into Ben's 2nd life at his studio as a producer/engineer running Ivakota Recording Studio. A really fun way to end speaking about how he learned things from his band and helping today's bands try not make the same ones. Lastly, we nerd out a bit on metal throughout the episode including a story at the end you won't want to miss. And to celebrate the metal chat, we both made metal playlists on Spotify and those will be linked on Washed Up Emo dot com or below depending on your podcast player. Today on the podcast we welcome Chris Sheppard from Everyone Asked About You. If you're not aware, this band was a late 90s gem of a band that I missed myself during this time. After finding out about them through some friends at Numero Group and talking to Chris, they intersected and overlapped with many of the bands of the time in their home of Little Rock Arkansas.Chris and I talk a lot about where he's from, seeing early emo bands, being in a band with a woman around that time, connecting with Ken Shipley from Tree Records who now runs Numero Group and the subsequent reunion shows and music being available again for the world. Plus we preview the upcoming Numero 20 showcase they're playing in LA next month. Finally, we talk to Chris about his career now that I guarantee you will not want to miss.I have to say, talking to bands I never knew then but connect with instantly continues to affirm my belief in this special time as a genre and as a music scene. This band I would have been obsessed with back in the day. Girl and guy vocals, super dissonant and great peaks and valleys. Heaven.
Today on the podcast, we welcome Erik Fisher from The Hated. The Hated were a 4 piece emo band from Annapolis Maryland who were active from 1985-1990. They are considered an early emo band and around the same time as many we know like Rites of Spring, Gray Matter, and Moss Icon. Thankfully, Numero Group has their music streaming and available. Go search it out.Now to the interview. For those that have been in college or had a really great teacher in high school perhaps. This is for you. That one class that you felt so engaged with someone and the flow back and forth on ideas kept on a path that enlightened both the student and the teacher. I let this one stay more open than usual because the flow of this with Erik, who is a professor by profession, is glorious to listen back on. If you haven't had a class like this before, this is close to it. When the bell rings, you felt you could take on the world and a new appreciation for what you just learned. I learned so much talking to Erik about his perspective on emo, his band, and music and philosophy. My favorite part is when Erik talks about seeing Rites of Spring for the first time. Holy shit, fucking epic. I can't wait for you to listen.
Today we welcome Justin Pearson. If that name is unfamiliar, head to Three One G dot com right now. Justin was and is a musical force. He's been in a lot of projects over the years and worth diving into his work now with Dead Cross, Deaf Club or where I found out about him when I was younger with Swing Kids and then The Locust. Justin was a little older than me and hearing about his history with punk, hardcore, and the word emo was again eye opening for me as someone that only knows so much. Justin was honest and open about how he felt about the scene and is an inspiration for myself and hopefully you after listening to this interview. Again, search out Three One G, we'll have links on Washed Up Emo dot com and dive into him if you've never heard about him or ride alongside with the emo nerd and get schooled from a legend.

Today on the podcast, we welcome Kip Uhlhorn from The Red Scare, Panthers and Cloudland Canyon. We speak about emo and hardcore from the late 90s and the many ways that I can sneak in another band that was screamo during that era. Rob Schwartz, advertising maven and CEO of TBWA New York, joins Andrew for a follow-up to their pre-COVID conversation that started this season of Sounds and Vision. This time, topics include how the pandemic may alter the worlds of marketing and advertising, why the industry needs to get its swagger back, how TikTok is diversifying the media playing field, what it means to be a ‘motorcycle dreamer,' and how “All You Need Is Love” might be a better message going forward than “Street Fighting Man.” Show Notes: Rob Schwartz (Twitter)TBWA New York CEO Rob Schwartz: ‘I'm not a manager'Rob Schwartz: The Beatles Theory of Creative Career ManagementSounds and Vision - S2E1 - Rob Schwartz (part 1)Graham Greene7 Marketing Tips Mad Men Reminded Us Are Still RelevantWhat Makes Sammy Run?Why Americans Live Farther From Work Than They Did a Decade AgoCOVID-sniffing dogs used at Black Keys concertThe Rolling Stones - "Street Fighting Man" (Live in Nashville, October 9 2021)Travel Makes Us Whole Again | Marriott BonvoyHow COVID-19 Has Changed Marketing ForeverThe Velvet Underground (trailer)The Factory Factor: Andy Warhol and the Velvet UndergroundAndy Warhol: “We're sponsoring a new band. Dave Kaufman — radio personality on CJAD, Montreal, and host of the Delve podcast — flew down to California for the first time last month just to see The Rolling Stones on the No Filter tour. It turned out that Andrew was in Malibu at the same time. Andrew didn't go to the concert but was curious about to hear about it — as one might imagine. So, Dave met Andrew in Malibu the next morning and related a song-by-song experience of seeing The Rolling Stones live. Photographer Jonathan Becker began contributing to Vanity Fair on the heels of an especially successful solo exhibition in Chelsea in 1981. His portraits of filmmaker Louis Malle and of Becker's mentor and friend Brassaï featured largely in the pages of the prototype for the magazine's relaunch, in 1983. Becker's specialty in portraits, photographed by and large on location, soon became a Vanity Fair staple: Robert Mapplethorpe, Jack Kevorkian, Jocelyn Wildenstein, and Martha Graham, as well as countless socialites, artists, and heads of state. Assignments for the magazine have dispatched Becker far and wide—from the Amazonian jungle, for first-encounter photographs of members of the Yanomami tribe, to Buckingham Palace, for the first photographs showing the Prince of Wales and Camilla Parker Bowles together.Becker is known for his close collaboration with Bob Colacello, Alex Shoumatoff, and other Vanity Fair writers on stories about the denizens of worldly watering holes: the Adirondacks and Aspen, Palm Beach and Palm Springs, Capri and so forth. Over the course of three years' work for the Rockefeller Foundation, Becker documented its funded projects on five continents. Four books of his work have been published: Bright Young Things; Studios by the Sea, Artists of Long Island's East End (derived from a Vanity Fair assignment with Bob Colacello); Bright Young Things: London; and, recently, Jonathan Becker: 30 Years at Vanity Fair. Today we welcome Josh English from the band Six going On Seven. Josh was raised in Portland Oregon, seasoned in Boston and an influence on many bands you love today. He should be on the tip of your tongue in this scene. Maybe after this interview the band and Josh will be. Their influence personally has stayed with me for years from their days on Some Records in the late 90s to "American't (or Won't)" on Big Wheel Recreation released back in 2001. The band shortly broke up and their CDs and 7”s I had have been staring back at me since. I honestly always had Josh on a list to interview and as this podcast creeps past its 200th episode and 10th year, it was an honor to speak to Josh about his life and what's he got up next in his career.Listen to all episodes here.Washed Up Emo is a partner of the Double Elvis podcast network.

Today we welcome Ryan Shelkett from Blank, Cross My Heart, Dead Red Sea, and Liars Academy. If you haven't heard any of those aforementioned bands, get on that and you'll see why Ryan is right at home here on Washed Up Emo. His time in punk, years at Deep Elm Records, and the time I spent working Liars Academy is discussed at length. Ryan's honest reflections on his time in music both good and bad showcase how this little genre pokes its head out even after you left it in the drawer for years and years. I've honestly wanted Ryan on since the day I started this podcast so on the even of 10 years of this podcast, no better friend could be had and I think you'll agree.
Rob Schwartz was once described as a "CEO's Creative Director." Today we welcome a very special guest and friend, Adam Lazzara from Taking Back Sunday. It's fitting he's number 200. I met him early on in my days at college when I'd see him at shows all the time. He was in high school at the time and it was something where no matter the show, Adam was there. During the podcast, we catch up on live and I bring up one of the worst shows he's ever played at a band that coincidentally led to him moving up to Long Island. As someone who was a fan of him before the band, it was this magical thing. Someone from around here in North Carolina is going to live in NYC? Wow! As the years past and releases, we'd spare a minute or a quick hello as life runs by. It's fitting for 200 because we're coming up on 10 years of the podcast and 14 years of washed up emo. You tend to look back and remember who was there next to you at the beginning. Adam was that person. It feels good to know Adam is a part of this series and like emo, no matter if you showed up today or 20 years ago, it's all here waiting for you.
Today on the podcast, we welcome Jonathan Fuller. You may know him from such bands as Sleepytime Trio, Bats and Mice, Denali, and my personal favorite Engine Down. We talk about his bands, career, and what he's doing now writing music for some of your favorite commercials. Special shout out to Dave from Lapeche for hooking Jonathan and I up.
Today on the podcast, we welcome actor and musician Michael Malarkey. You may know Michael from his acting roles in the Vampire Diaries to Project Blue Book. His most recent album “Graveracer” was released in early 2020. Michael is a huge fan of emo, punk, hardcore, and screamo. My favorite quote was fitting to many that have a love of something not their job and hope they can do one to help the other. He said, “I'm a musician with an acting problem.” Both are great and it was an honor to have Michael be a part of this podcast. If you're a fan of him or not, or know too much or not enough, you'll enjoy this episode.
Brian and Ben revisit and reconsider the second and final record of Rites Of Spring’s short but intense incarnation. Ton Mullen, from Washed Up Emo, stops by to talk about why he loves this record, this band and even the dreaded “E” word. Brian’s friend, Jason Kooken also chimes in with a story about when he first heard this as a teen in the 80s Va suburbs. Contact us at : endonendpod@gmail.com
If you want to know anything about the history of emo, Tom Mullen is the person to ask. After hosting a podcast called Washed Up Emo, he collected the stories he heard from scene heavyweights and put together a book titled the Anthology of Emo. Fast forward to 2020 and The Anthology Of Emo: Volume 2 has just been released. Listen in as Tom calls into The Gunz Show to chat about the book, the bands, and the nostalgia that fuels the project. The two also discuss kickstarting your own scene, Equal Vision Records, and more. Hit play now!
Like two friends who haven’t spoken in a bit. Mike and I start talking about a show i saw of theirs at the beginning of the pod. Mike was absolutely a joy to speak with albeit with some audio issues thanks to cell phones and not being able to do this in person. Also you may hear some beeps, not sure if the NSA was listening but if they are, I hope they enjoyed the trip down memory lane with Mike about the band, his life and what music has meant to him. I also seem to have had a crazy cold but still did this interview so I sound a little stuffed up. Also, it’s worth noting, please check out Travis Dopp’s GoFundMe for his fight against cancer. Look for those links on Washed Up Emo dot com if you’re looking to help out.
Tom Mullen from Washed Up Emo comes on to talk Pump Up The Volume and why this movie changed this life. In this epic podcast the Hipsters and Tom tackle a ton of issues like are Tim and Toby's bands emo? (They are not.) Have we given up? (Maybe.) Is this movie still relevant today? (Surprisingly yes.) "Don't hate the media, be the media." Jello Biafra. Washed Up Emo- https://www.washedupemo.com/ Is This Band Emo- http://isthisbandemo.com/
In this episode I had the most fun chatting all things EMO with Tom Mullen, founder of Washed Up Emo. We talk about his TWO published books, ‘Anthology Of Emo- Volumes 1 & 2', his podcast ‘Washed Up Emo', his favorite episodes, especially the one with the late John Bunch, the music world in the 90's, a fun Saves The Day show he booked in the late 90's (at a pizza place!!), the term EMO and how it can be portrayed in a negative light, his journey to keep the history of emo alive and MUCH more! Today on the podcast is Gared O’Donnell from Planes Mistaken for Stars. Gared and I recently connected after he heard an earlier podcast, episode 110 to be exact, with writer Jason Heller about the impact of Planes Mistaken for Stars and the untimely death of band member Matt Bellinger. Gared hadn’t heard this episode until recently and reached out to me after he listened. We ended up talking a bit and he agreed to come on the podcast. This episode now takes on a little extra weight. The interview, done in May of this year was before Gared was diagnosed in late August with stage 3 Esophagus cancer. As a favor, it’d be great while you’re listening to Gared’s interview to check out the link to his GoFundMe on Washed Up Emo. They’re still researching the best options for care but any words of support or some donation will go a long way for a legend. If you don’t know much about Planes Mistaken for Stars or a super fan, this episode is for you. Gared pulls no punches talking the band’s association with emo saying, “I think we wanted to lean into the dark side of things because it made more sense to us.” On their rowdy days, he admits. “It was a circus act, it wasn’t a magic show.” He talks fondly on his time with bandmate Matt saying, “Matt walks on stage with me, every time I do.” Lastly, he’s one of the most aware of his faults and dreams I’ve ever interviewed saying, “Sometimes life is just crushing, just to walk outside the door… if one our tunes can get you to roll up your sleeves and brave through it, then that’s all I want. Then stating eloquently “I’m hoping that on my deathbed, I’ll just remember that, I did it my way.”

The book includes rare photographs and printed ephemera, an introduction by Tom Mullen, and a forward by writer and author Luke O’Neil (Welcome to Hell World).About Anthology of Emo Volume 2In 2017, after 100+ interviews with artists and those involved with the emo and hardcore scene for the critically acclaimed Washed Up Emo Podcast, Tom Mullen, on the 10th anniversary of WashedUpEmo.com, introduced Anthology of Emo. The book, selling out in less than a year, compiled the best stories from the podcast and features rare and unseen photos and ephemera. The follow-up, Volume 2, picks up where the previous book left off and features interviews, quotes, and more from key figures and veterans of the scene. For a word that’s often misunderstood, the Anthology of Emo series is an informative companion and faithful guide to the genre of emo. Tom Mullen is a music industry executive and veteran podcaster. He’s spent time at Atlantic, Equal Vision, Vagrant, TVT, EMI and Sony, where he was a 2016 Clio and Cannes Lions winner for his work with Bob Dylan. In 2007, he founded WashedUpEmo.com, a destination for the entire history of emo. The site and podcast has been featured in The New Yorker, AV Club, Pitchfork, The New York Times, Paste, Billboard, Spin, Village Voice, Stereogum, Chicago Reader, Noisey, and Brooklyn Vegan. In 2011, it expanded to a podcast and DJ night in NYC. In 2014, he launched IsThisBandEmo.com, a site helping the world understand which bands are emo or not with a smile and a wink.A proud native of Vermont, he lives in Los Angeles and spends his free time documenting and archiving the emo genre for future generations. A now popular outlet, audio, proved fruitful almost instantly in 2011. The Washed Up Emo Podcast started after Tom realized a noticeable void of podcasts from the genre. Utilizing music industry connections and his background as a college radio DJ, it quickly snowballed with critical acclaim after a few episodes and now has over 1 million plays and continues to be the definitive podcast for the emo genre. The never-ending mountain of guests over the almost decade of episodes have included Jawbreaker, The Promise Ring, Thursday, Taking Back Sunday, Piebald, The Get Up Kids, Jimmy Eat World, Mineral, and American Football. Now, after 170+ episodes, the Washed Up Emo Podcast still has one goal. To represent and document the entire history of emo for all fans of the genre. We want to hear from you! Author, podcaster, and music industry veteran Tom Mullen joins the show!
When I look back on my life and what albums had an immediate impact on me from the 90s, one jumps out that I felt never got their due. The band was M.I.J and the singer of that band, Jeff Hanson. Jeff tragically died in 2009 and left a wealth of material from three solo albums on Kill Rock Stars to an album and EP on the legendary Caulfield Records. I wanted to find a couple of folks to talk about Jeff and his life, stories, and legacy. Speaking about Jeff in this episode is Bob Nanna from Braid, Hey Mercedes, and many other bands, plus Bernie McGinn who put out the full length, “The Radio Goodnight” and an EP. They speak eloquently about Jeff and you’ll find out more about music but also his humor. If this perks your interest, I’ve linked a bunch of articles and content on Washed Up Emo to continue your dive into Jeff’s music. You can also go to JeffHanson.net. This is by no means a complete history and I urge you to dig into Jeff and his life to learn more. Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/washedupemo)
Episode #178 : While music consumption has pivoted away from piracy and downloads, the spectre of the past is once again looming over the industry, as podcasts become an even more dominant medium. Generally unregulated, most podcasts contain at least one musical work, that is likely unlicensed, which means that those episodes you're downloading are really no different than the unauthorized downloads of the past. So, will the industry coalesce around a standard blanket license to solve this issue? Or, will podcast hosts develop a YouTube-like Content ID system to identify these unlicensed works and prevent them from being distributed? We get answers to those questions and more this week from Jim Griffin (OneHouse), Gabe Fleet (Attorney), and Tom Mullen (Atlantic Records, Washed Up Emo).
Today we welcome Matt Saincome, Bill Conway and Krissy Howard from The Hard Times! The world famous satirical site stopped by Washed Up Emo on their recent book tour to talk about how the site started, how they come up with all the funny headlines, some regrets they’ve had, and I challenge them to come up with some emo headlines on the spot. A truly inspiring tale of finding something you love and making it your job. Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/washedupemo)

Today, we welcome Chris Crisci from The Appleseed Cast. Chris has been on my list for the entire 8 years of this podcast’s existence. I am honored to finally have him on the podcast. I loved Chris’ appreciation for the scene, constantly challenging himself, and not resting while making the band work alongside his day job, family and life. The band’s discography is one of my favorites in all of my music and to finally hear some of the questions I’ve had over the years was a true treat. Last, to note, there is a new album by the band entitled “The Fleeting Light of Impermanence” out of Graveface Records that we discuss. You can start listening to this on Friday, or if you’re listening to this in the future, it’s on your favorite streaming service. Chris was honest, sweet, and thoughtful throughout this beautiful conversation and I hope you enjoy.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/washedupemo)
Today we welcome Steve Schiltz from Longwave. Steve is also an accomplished music producer and composer for film, TV and advertising. If you’re wondering why Steve is on. I have three reasons.First, when I moved to NYC, the Brooklyn thing was about to blow up and I was working at a label nearby a lot of these venues in the city where bands like the Strokes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and others cut their teeth. Longwave were active around the same time as well and I loved them.Second, I was and still am, obsessed with shoe gaze. The similarities to the long droning emo songs that I also can’t stop emulating is directly related to my love of shoe gaze. I’d happily quit my job and join a shoe gaze band tomorrow. Hit me up.Third, I find out a half hour in that a past band Steve was in, Scout, toured with Sunny Day Real Estate! He waited 30 minutes to tell me that. Steve has a very funny story about Jeremy Enigk you’ll want to listen for.To be honest, this one is sorta for me. Over the years, Steve and I have crossed paths through friends and music here in NYC. I knowwww… It’s not emo, it’s not hardcore but Steve’s music is fucking beautiful and Longwave’s shoe gaze is what I’d want to sound like if I ever picked up my guitar again. Why should you listen? Steve weaves a rad story about early NYC, the boom of 2000s Brooklyn and the lasting effects of that era that still resonates today.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/washedupemo)
We’re back and stoked to have episode 145 of the podcast with Hutch Harris, most widely know from the band, The Thermals. Hutch and I have been conversing back and forth on Twitter for years. I’d always loved his take on music, especially the punk and hardcore references. As a fan of his band, The Thermals, I was bummed when not long ago they called it quits. In addition to Hutch being a songwriter, I had also enjoyed his writing he’s done with various outlets, especially a recent piece on Pete Shelley from the Buzzcocks. On top of all that, he recently released a solo album entitled “Only Water” that’s absolutely beautiful! So the stars aligned and we caught up late last year to talk music. Today we welcome Anthony Green from Circa Survive, Saosin and the Sound of Animals Fighting. My history with Anthony goes back to the early days of Circa Survive and working alongside him at Equal Vision Records for the Juturna and On Letting Go album releases. As the years passed, we stayed in touch and would see each other as you do when a band rolls through town. Anthony was always super into what I was doing with Washed Up Emo and check in when I’d post something about The Promise Ring or Braid. Anthony came along at an amazing time for punk rock and rode the wave with Circa Survive to heights not afforded many and still can play anywhere in the world for his solo material or with Circa Survive. In the hour we chatted, we got to catch up in thoughts on emo, sneaking up on stage to ask Thursday, who he didn’t know, about joining a certain band. Plus, how I forced Circa Survive to do a Fuse TV event for a girl that really just wanted Panic! at the Disco and where he is now and what he would have said to himself 10 years ago. His new solo album “Would You Still Be In Love” is out now and he’s touring the 10th anniversary of “Avalon” his debut LP now. This week, Washed Up Emo's Tom Mullen is on the show talking about Sunny Day Real Estate's "How It Feels to Be Something On". In addition to talking about what this album means to him, we delve into how things have changed in the music scenes that we grew up in, as well as our feelings about things such as the "Emo Revival".
On this episode, I chat with a staple of the Long Island scene, Vinnie Caruana from The Movielife and I Am The Avalanche. Vinnie had some great insight in his early days with music, touring and the LI/NYC scene. We finished up the podcast with what is next for Vinnie and even included some sports chat about his favorite football club, Liverpool. Washed Up Emo is a partner of the Double Elvis podcast network.
