Rejecting that, we remain in the lands of horror, as we talk about Brian Evenson's Good Night, Sleep Tight, with our friend Nate!We dive into some of the themes in this collection of short stories, their representation of childhood and anxieties of parenthood, sleep and more. And while elaborating on elements we enjoyed and... didn't, unfortunately! If you've driven in the country and experienced a car coming at you with their high-beams on, you sort of know what Michael Evenson experiences. Regular low-beam LED headlights are so bad for him that, wherever he is on the road, he has to stop until the “terror brightness” passes. Michael points out that we should look at Europe where headlights must be shielded or aimed to point only on the road. Why can't we do that here? Born in 1945 at the head of the Boomer Generation which meant that anything Michael was interested in became a fashion for much of the country.  He got a liberal arts degree from UC Berkeley, and headed for the hills to carve out a life with other community building individuals, raising children, and preserving environmental health. He turned to farming and ranching, and has owned the Lost Coast Ranch, from the late 60s to the present.  He is the owner and founder, in 1986, of OldGrowthTimbers.com specializing in dismantling old buildings to salvage the precious old redwood, while routinely trucking lumber and livestock on the back roads and highways of California.  He is the long time President of the Mattole Salmon Group, spending a lifetime restoring salmon to the Mattole River.

Debbie Schwake and Ashley Evenson discuss their escapee journeys and how they formed a collaborative partnership. They emphasize the importance of collaboration and transparency in their working relationship. They have their own independent businesses but also work together on projects, leveraging each other's strengths. They highlight the flexibility and work-life balance that comes with being a solo entrepreneur. They see a growing need for fractional talent in the consulting industry, particularly among small to mid-tier companies. Their target audience is those who need an outside perspective and expertise to help with business issues and growth plans. Ashley and Debbie discuss their unique position as consultants with both big brand and industry experience, providing expert-level consulting to small and medium-sized companies at a fraction of the cost. They emphasize the importance of being hands-on and implementing recommendations, rather than just providing advice. They also highlight the value of an outside-in perspective and the need for validation and direction, rather than relying solely on tools. Networking is a key strategy for both of them, focusing on building relationships and offering support without asking for business. They stress the importance of belief in oneself and the power of humanizing your brand through video and personal connections.Guest LinksDebbie Schwake: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dschwake/ Ashely Evenson: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ashleyevenson/Website: https://andcoalition.com/ TakeawaysCollaboration and transparency are key in forming successful partnerships.Having independent businesses allows for flexibility and work-life balance. There is a growing need for fractional talent in the consulting industry.Small to mid-tier companies can benefit from outside expertise and an outside-in perspective.Working together on projects allows for leveraging each other's strengths. One topic that consistently comes up in my conversations with aspiring entrepreneurs is pursuing entrepreneurship through acquisition, a fancy way of saying buying a business as opposed to building one from scratch. There's an old saying that, “There are multiple ways to skin a cat,” and as great as it is to start a business, buying one can be just as impactful. To discuss the process, I invited on the Transition, Jeff Evenson, an Army Veteran, Business Coach, and Acquisition Entrepreneur, with experience purchasing multiple businesses, as well as working with others to do the same. Over the years, Jeff's acquired hair salons, a pillow company, and a manufacturing business, just to name a few. On the show, we discuss why buying a business may or may not be a right fit for you, how to spot a good deal, and what pitfalls you should avoid along the way.Order my book, “Black Veteran Entrepreneur” here: https://amzn.to/3gme7kgTo learn more about Jeff, visit:  https://www.thayergateproject.com/

From the hallowed halls of West Point in 1990 to the bustling floors of stock trading, Jeff Evenson's journey through the corporate maze has been nothing short of remarkable. With an MBA from Washington University in St. Louis under his belt, Jeff navigated the world of stocks at a brokerage firm, managed diverse portfolios, oversaw pension funds, and played a key role in facilitating acquisitions for a prominent Fortune 50 company. But it's not just his corporate pursuits that set him apart. Jeff's true passion lies in business ownership—a path he's intimately familiar with, having owned, run, and successfully exited businesses ranging from hair salons to aerospace manufacturers and even smoothie shops. Now, wearing the hat of an acquisition and acceleration coach, he is on a mission to guide others in building generational wealth through the intricacies of business acquisition and ownership. Jeff Evenson's journey from West Point to business ownership offers invaluable lessons for entrepreneurs and business leaders. His experiences underscore the significance of anticipation, the art of negotiation, and the importance of clear communication. THE HUMAN SIDE OF MAKING DEALSWhile financial considerations are undoubtedly critical when making deals, the human element remains pivotal in sealing the deal. In the intricate dance of buying, selling, or starting a business, both the head. Building a relationship is pivotal to a successful deal. Beyond financial considerations, many sellers care deeply about the legacy of their business and are unlikely to sell to someone they feel won't respect or continue that legacy. Building trust and rapport can be just as crucial as getting the numbers right. IT'S NOT ALL ABOUT THE MONETJeff advises against charging into meetings with sellers, focusing solely on financial specifics. Instead, he suggests fostering genuine conversations, letting sellers narrate their journey, their motivations, and their concerns about the future of the business post-sale. He emphasizes the importance of understanding a seller's emotional ties to the business, whether it's the legacy they've built or the relationships they've forged with employees over the years. COLLISIONS AS CATALYSTS FOR GREATNESSJeff, with his extensive experience in business operations and hiring practices, is a firm believer in the power of collisions. A quote from our interview that sticks out to me, “Collisions are the catalyst for greatness.” The idea is simple yet profound: When two people or entities with complementary skills and visions come together, the potential for greatness multiplies exponentially. ACQUIRING TALENT THROUGH M&ASIn a tight labor market, acquiring businesses can also be a strategy to onboard talent. Instead of recruiting individuals, companies can buy out entire teams or firms, ensuring they get seasoned professionals who are already synergized. While this approach has its advantages, however, integrating cultures and ensuring the acquired talent feels valued and comfortable are essential to the acquisition's success. For those interested in leveraging Jeff's expertise, he is approachable and encourages direct contact. He's available on LinkedIn and has two businesses: His coaching business at www.flawlessacceleration.com and his personal acquisition venture at www.ThayerGateProject.com. • • • For my full discussion with Jeff Evenson, and more on this topic and others discussed not featured on this blog post:Listen to the Full DealQuest Podcast Episode Here• • • FOR MORE ON JEFF EVENSON:https://www.thayergateproject.com/www.linkedin.com/in/jeffreyevenson Corey Kupfer is an expert strategist, negotiator, and dealmaker. As you would expect of someone who has spent so much time on the water, he has an absolute plethora of tales and anecdotes to recount and, at our behest, he does. He tells of encounters with seemingly fluorescent dolphins and of performing underwater acrobatics with baby whales.  Storms, fires and a lovely German couple that replaced all his mooring ropes. After a brief stint in the Army, he worked in the corporate world for a little over a decade before acquiring his first business in 2008. That first acquisition was a hair salon/spa that he helped grow from less than $4 million in revenues to over $7 million in ten years through opening a second location and acquiring a small manufacturing company in their supply chain. During those ten years, he was also part of a startup team that launched a Jamba Juice franchisee in St Louis, as well as a couple of other startups that didn't succeed. After exiting the salon/spa business in a divorce, Jeff joined another partner and acquired a precision machine shop doing business with NASA, SpaceX and all the major defense contractors. He exited that business after 18 months and has been coaching business owners and aspiring acquisition entrepreneurs since January 2021.Watch it on Youtube: https://youtu.be/AMRSxVZ00Og--------------------------------------------------Contact Jeff onLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jeffreyevenson/Phone: (314) 221-0305Email: jeffrey.n.evenson@gmail.com--------------------------------------------------How2Exit Joins ITX's Channel Partner Network!-Why ITX?Since 1998, ITX has created $5 billion in value by selling more than 225 IT businesses in 20 countries. Jeffrey Evenson attended West Point, a military academy in New York. And then he joined the army for just a short time after leaving West Point. After grad school, he earned an MBA, gained a lot of knowledge about finance, and ended up trading stocks as a job. Eventually, he moved from the trading business into investment management, working for a boutique investment manager. Then he became a pension fund manager for Anheuser Busch in St. Louis. While he was managing pension funds there he kind of thought he should probably learn how to sell beer and so he did and became involved in the sales operations side of that business. Then he ended up working in a mergers and acquisitions group. Basically, they were buying and selling distributors of beer and wholesalers of beer. For him, that was the first time he really understood what you learn about mergers and acquisitions in grad school. Podcast Highlights: In 2008, he acquired his first business. He talks about how having the option of actually being his own boss was very compelling. Being in the army and having the leadership skills to build, motivate, and inspire teams has made Jeff's calling to cast a vision for a company. He shares how his military background gave him important core values in his life whether it was leading a company or helping people to buy companies. It is a process of working with a seller for Jeff in order to acquire a business. The person won't sell the business if you haven't built trust with them. He discussed more about his first acquisition. The acquisition process itself is all about building candor and building a relationship with the seller. After the success of his first acquisition, Jeff narrowed down all the other companies they bought in different industries. In order to acquire businesses or acquire equipment, Jeff used SBA loans. For a partnership to work, it requires two adults to enter into a partnership and it requires knowing each other's strengths. Agreeing that we're not the same person and knowing where what holes were filling for the other person. He talks about his day job in The Lion's pride and the organization he started: Thayer Gate Project. Jeff shares his final advice and thoughts for people who want to acquire a business. My guest today who worked in Club Med in the early 1980s have never met, but he came to my attention when I saw him post the most excellent photos of his time in Club Med in the 80s on the Official Club Med EXGO Facebook Group. His first season was in December of 1980 in Club Med Magic Isle, Haiti as a stagiere Choreographer. Born in and raised in Alhambra, but now residing in beautiful San Diego, please help me welcome to MFS, Doug Evenson!! Before Club Med, Doug was that rare athlete (football & basketball) who also won a theatre scholarship. His father went to a Club Med in Guadeloupe in 1976 and told Doug that this is the place that he should work! In 1980, his best friend saw a tiny Club Med ad in the newspaper looking for theatre folk. From that ad, he got his interview and it took place at the Universal Hilton in Hollywood, California. The first part of Doug's story takes place from December 1980 up until October 1986. He worked in Club Med villages such as Cancun, Copper Mountain, Paradise Island, Ile Maurice, Bora Bora, Fort Royal, Playa Blanca and Eleuthera. Doug was even present when the famous (or infamous) 1983 movie “Copper Mountain” starring Jim Carrey and Alan Thicke, was being filmed at Club Med Copper Mountain! Doug has so many interesting stories to share during this interview. Some highlights are The DC-3/Cancun/Chichen Itza story, the submarine story, lunch with Pierre Salinger (Press Secretary for President John F. Kennedy), hanging out with Rita Coolidge in Copper Mountain, Bar Games with Sean Connery in Paradise Island in 1982 and driving his 1969 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia to Copper Mountain from California. I really hope you enjoy this interview with one heck of a raconteur! **My First Season podcast has always been free to listen to and is available on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Samsung Podcasts, Podbean App, Spotify, Amazon Music/Audible, TuneIn + Alexa, iHeartRadio, PlayerFM, Pandora and Listen Notes. The more you understand about yourself, the better and more effective you will be as a business owner.”  - Jeff Evenson (USMA ‘90) Jeff Evenson (USMA ‘90) has owned multiple businesses since 2008 and has successfully launched, or purchased and scaled, several multi-million-dollar companies. Along the way, he's experienced virtually every good and bad element of business, including startup, rapid expansion, purchase, sale, and franchise, which taught him countless valuable business lessons. Today, Jeff invests in, or buys companies, with an aim to scale them up and retain them. Go to drive80.com or email me at mike@drive80.com to learn more. Formed in 1990, Sense Field was one of several contemporary bands to popularize the post-hardcore or "emo" subgenre. The band was initially signed to Revelation Records, releasing three albums, and later signed with Warner Bros. in 1996. However, problems within the label caused the band to sit in limbo for five years as the label was re-staffed multiple times. The band was eventually released from their contract and Sense Field won the right to re-record the album they had originally written for Warner Bros. Records.  They later broke up in 2004. They reunited for Revelation Records 25 Year Anniversary Show. And played again for Jon Bunch's Tribute concert in 2016. Episode 23 - Joe Evenson on Deconstructing Masculinity. A native of Garretson, SD, Evenson was a four-year letter winner and two-year starting linebacker for Augustana from 1998 to 2001. He was an All-North Central Conference honorable mention selection both his junior and senior seasons. Following his career with the Vikings, Evenson played three seasons (2002-04) with the Sioux Falls Storm indoor football team. He was a member of the 2004 team that won the Pacific North Conference championship. When Joe was coaching football he attended a lecture by longtime Nebraska Coach Ron Brown. There, Coach Brown deconstructed what it means to be a man and flipped it's secular head on to itself. The real tough men say no to alcohol, say no to drugs, say no to sleeping around, and say Yes to Jesus! Joe walks us through his testimony from football to faith. You can reach out to Joe by finding him on the Make-A-Wish South Dakota site. Please reach out to us if you are a male and looking to get plugged into a group of Christian men here in Sioux Falls. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mandate/message
