We talk about the album and really go deep on the making of and the artwork.  We also talk about death, planning, and doing things out of love.  Lastly you can tell we've spoken a lot as it's just a lot of jokes and sorta feels like we just recorded one of many conversations together over the years. I could not be more proud to speak with Chris and know he's still making music. The BrooklynVegan Show: A Podcast About Music

The latest episode of The BrooklynVegan Show is an interview with Knapsack. Knapsack were initially around between 1993 and 2000, during which time they released three great albums, and those albums were massively influential on the early 2000s emo boom, and they continue to age gracefully and influence new bands today. One of the reasons we had this conversation is that Knapsack are finally giving their albums long-awaited vinyl reissues via Spartan Records with bonus tracks, and BrooklynVegan is thrilled to be offering exclusive color variants of each one: 1995's Silver Sweepstakes on purple vinyl, 1997's Day Three of My New Life on green vinyl, and and 1998's This Conversation Is Ending Starting Right Now on baby blue vinyl. All three are limited to 300 each and available now in the BrooklynVegan store. The conversation was between singer/songwriter Blair Shehan (also of The Jealous Sound), drummer Colby Mancasola, guitarist Sergie Loobkoff (also of Samiam, who just announced their first album in 12 years), and myself, and we spoke about the possibility of new music and another live reunion ("I would totally be down for it," Blair said of the latter); the word "emo" and how it means different things to different people; how Knapsack befriended bands like Mineral, Christie Front Drive, and Boys Life (who contributed to the new book accompanying the reissues; and more. The BrooklynVegan Show is brought to you in part by DistroKid, a service for musicians that allows you to easily upload your music to all major streaming platforms. You can get 30% off of your first year's membership by signing up at distrokid.com/vip/brooklynvegan.   Theme music by Michael Silverstein.

This week's guest is Mike Reed. These days, Reed can be heard as the guitarist and vocalist of 84 Tigers, a tremendous Michigan-based project that's preparing to release their debut album, Time In The Lighthouse, on Spartan Records this fall. Prior to that album's Oct. 21 release and the band's upcoming appearance at The Fest, Reed spoke with My First Band host Tyler Maas about the formation of his new band, the process of writing and recording the forthcoming album and what the near future holds for 84 Tigers. Of course, the interview also touched upon Reed's years in legendary Midwest emo outfit Small Brown Bike, as well as LaSalle, Able Baker Fox, his solo material and even his first band ever. Along the way, Reed discussed booking noted punk bands at a rural Michigan community center as a high schooler, memorable Small Brown Bike tours with Hot Water Music and Cursive, and how his approach and expectations he has for 84 Tigers differs from his past projects. Most recently in Brooklyn back before the pandemic we ended up talking for a long time after an Unwed Sailor show and it went places where you don’t expect a conversation to go and all the sudden you get a text or the bartender goes, “yea it’s closing time.” I wanted to do that again so I got Johnathon to come back on to talk about his music career from his early bands to Roadside Monument and his latest album “Truth or Consequences” that is out now on Spartan Records. As with any guests that got to take in the 80s, I was smitten with his stories of Seattle, Tulsa, and what laid the groundwork for his musical taste, ideals, but also where he is today. Whether you know William Goldsmith as a founding member of Sunny Day Real Estate, as the original drummer of Foo Fighters or from his time in the short-lived-but-outstanding band The Fire Theft, you're absolutely aware of his work. Following his tenures in those world-renowned projects, the accomplished percussionist — citing "musical PTSD" (and actual PTSD) — recently ended his decade-long hiatus from playing music to get back behind the kit with Assertion. A few weeks removed from the release of his new band's debut album on Spartan Records, Goldsmith spoke to My First Band host Tyler Maas about his decision to return to drumming, the response the new record has been getting and his renewed musical motivation. Of course, the conversation also turned to his past work. Over the course of the conversation, Goldsmith talked about growing up in Seattle and quickly taking to the drums, early on-stage experiences in middle school and high school bands, meeting Jeremy Enigk and playing together in a hardcore band called Reason For Hate, the project that eventually turned into Sunny Day, being invited to jam with Dave Grohl, memorable anecdotes from his time in Foo Fighters, and much more. The Farewell Bend actually reissued their lone LP just last month via Spartan Records, and I highly suggest you head over to their website and pick up a copy; you will not be disappointed. After The Farewell Bend called it a day, Brandon was a member of the band Canyon that put out two really great records as well, and became Jay Farrar (Son Volt, Uncle Tupelo) backing band for a few tours. After Canyon split he released three solo LP's under his own name, and also started the band Six Bells. I hope you're ready for a long one, because it is, haha! So great to have Chris Simpson back on the podcast. Since we last spoke all the back for episode 15 of this podcast, Mineral wasn’t even reunited yet. We had a lot to catch up on. We talked about the Mineral 25th anniversary and how it was different from the reunion in 2014, the two new songs they wrote for the 25th anniversary book, and The Gloria Record’s reissue of A Lull in Traffic. I also continue to grill Chris about the unheard Gloria Record album I want him to finish and discuss the amazing new Mountain Time album at length which is out now on Spartan Records. At the end, if you stick around, Chris tells an amazing Antioch Arrow story. Lastly, the next volume of the Anthology of Emo book series was announced. Learn more at AnthologyofEmo.com

Kim Warnick is a team member of Calling All Crows, which is a nonprofit focused on sexual harassment prevention at gigs, festivals, and other live events. This is great timing because April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month - so I wanted to have a conversation with Kim about her work with Calling All Crows and how it’s impacted the lives of concertgoers and volunteers alike. Despite the very real nature of the work Kim and I both do (with Art of Survival), this conversation was very light-hearted and fun and I hope you learn a few things from it! Today we welcome singer, guitarist and lyricist, Scott Hobart from Giants Chair. Giants Chair are a midwest band that in the early 90s influenced many in the scene we know today. Starting out on the legendary Caulfield Records, Giants Chair have been off and on over the years and continued to be talked about when this genre and era is mentioned. Now they’re about to release their new album “Prefabylon” out December 6th on Spartan Records. If this is the future, it’s out now on streaming services. I think I giggled or laughed more than most episodes as Scott and I talk about the band’s history, his kids, his day job, and “Prefabylon.” Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/washedupemo)

Welcome to the 20th episode of "Talkin' with Andrew and Chris"! We are back with another very special episode, today's guest is Brooks Paschal, of the Rock band "Suprises"! After releasing three successful LP’s with the fan-adored band Sullivan and dozens of solo tracks over the past ten years, songs seem to emanate from all levels of Brooks Paschal's consciousness. However, Paschal’s new project Surprises is something different. It is cathartic, it is reckless, and it is personal — a striking new narrative from a familiar voice. Natural Disaster is a concentrated amalgamation of all the driving, melodic, soaring, and fragile moments that made Paschal’s previous work so appealing, but with instincts driving all direction, we're thrust into a new and unchartered creative territory. Shawn Carter is a professional comedian, comedy producer, podcast producer, and all around great guy. Shawn runs comedy shows all over Boston - and has been doing so for well over a decade. He has helped create a fantastic community of comedians in the Boston area that are supportive, creative, and genuinely trying to make each other better. The DIY ethics Shawn exudes are a testament to how hard he works, how much he puts his friends over, and the opportunities he creates for others to thrive. And if Shawn and I have something in common it’s that we both love projects! We’re both kinda always doing something. Shawn ALSO runs a podcast, Pick A Side Stupid, which is also a weekly live comedy debate show that takes place in Quincy, Mass - right across town from where we live - where two comedians are posed a question and then they improv a response. Tropical Depression effectively filters the spirits of the most legendary noise rock and post-hardcore scenes -- San Diego’s angular attack (Hot Snakes, No Knife), Seattle’s sheer power (Botch, These Arms Are Snakes), Chicago’s sonic depravity (The Jesus Lizard, Shellac), and DC’s unbridled creativity (Fugazi, Faraquet) -- through the band's unique brand of sweat-soaked southern grime and a dose of hardcore aggression. (Courtesy of Spartan Records)- On this episode, you got to hear the track, “Brain Cell,” which is a major kick in the face - and it’s the opening track to the album, so you know you’re in for a treat!THE CONNECTEDU NETWORK- This week, you got to learn about the ConnectEDU Network, of which this podcast is now a contributing member!- ConnectEDU Network connects the unique perspectives and expert insight of higher education through podcasting. I met John Frazier in college when he was working at Tooth and Nail/Solid State Records. We’d nerd out about bands and stayed in touch over the years. Now, he runs an amazing label called Spartan Records. Go support, listen, buy something from the label if you get a chance. Great person and a great friend. Just a few weeks ago, he sends me this Mineral interview out of the blue. I am blown away by it. He told me in a subsequent email that it was a Mineral interview he did 20 years ago while they were on tour with Jimmy Eat World and Sense Field at Twisters in Richmond, Virginia on March 1st, 1997. John was street teaming for Crank! Records at the time and was program director for James Madison University’s radio station WXJM. He was doing the interview for a zine he made for the radio station. The street team participation John did led him to the job at Crank! which started him on his career. The interview is with Chris and Gabe in their van. While John was doing it, Jimmy Eat World was in the middle of their set. Fun things to note for timing, the band had released “The Power of Failing” as was at work on “EndSerending” with the producer Mark Trombino. It’s candid, so I left everything in there. At around 5:35 into the interview, they’re approached by a parking enforcement guy who claims they didn’t pay to park and they go back and forth over the $3 parking fee. Later on in the interview, they recount the whole story to someone else. If there’s any charm or insight into the BS of touring life, that’s it. Hope you enjoy this piece of history and thanks to John for sharing it with Washed Up Emo. Go check out Spartan Records and support John. Remember, this was 1997 so the sound quality, i’ve EQ’d a lot but also it’s 1997, so bear with it and enjoy the sounds of analog for 15 minutes. It's nice to be back after a taking a week off for the holidays and my birthday! This week, I am chatting with two great punx, human beings, activists, and prevention specialists. Kat Stuehrk and Matt Walsh run the nonprofit, Our Music My Body. Our Music My Body is a Chicago-based collaborative campaign led by Between Friends & Rape Victim Advocates to raise awareness about sexual harassment in the music scene. They do this work because they believe everyone deserves to feel comfortable and safe when they go to a concert or festival. OurMusicMyBody works with festival and venue staff, musicians, and music fans alike to create fun and consensual music experiences for all. This weeks I chat with an incredible human being named, Cassie Wilson! Cassie is an accessibility activist and musical entrepreneur who runs the online music reviewing site, Sick Snaps, as well as the nonprofit, Half Access. We chat about music, Taco Bell, being from Oregon and the greater purpose of Cassie's work in the scene today. Half Access is a program that gives disabled music fans a voice in accessibility issues and ableism at concert venues through a database of music venues and its accessibility needs and issues, while also developing ways to help venues improve their practices. Having recently turned 19 (HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!), she is already making a major name for herself as the recipient of a $10,000 grant from Hopeless Records and Sub City. She was flown to Cleveland to receive the award in front of thousands of people and musicians she admires at the Alternative Press Music Awards! EPISODE NOTES (for full links, visit CraigBidiman.com/edupunxpod): - A lot of bands get hyped in this episode, check out tunes from Grizzly, Speak Low If You Speak Love, From Indian Lakes, and Owel. - You can learn more about Cassie's nonprofit, Half Access, by visiting HalfAccess.org - make sure to check out the venue database and reach out so that you can help her chronicle music venue accessibility across the country and WORLD! - Dan Campbell from The Wonder Years presented Cassie with her APMA award - you can check out the video and article HERE! You can also learn more about the Hopeless Records/Subcity grant she won! - Sick Snaps, Cassie's first project, featured my first single back in May, and it was a wonderful way to connect with my home audience in the Pacific Northwest! Be sure to check out more of Sick Snaps' work and all of the great tunes they feature. - Cassie's favorite record labels today are Hopeless Records and Triple Crown Records - both are putting nothing but incredible bands! - If you haven't heard the new album from The Maine, Cassie's favorite band of all time, you should get on that! I just did and I really enjoyed it. - But currently Cassie is all about A Will Away, Tigers Jaw, and Paramore. - In fact, Cassie's top album this year so far is “After Laughter,” by Paramore. MUSIC NOTES: - This week's music sponsor is Spartan Records - you can hear more tunes from their bands at SpartanRecords.com!  - The intro/outro/break song is "Atom Smasher," from the new Young Fox album, "Sky Beats Gold." I love the album - have the orange/brown/white tri-color with black haze vinyl pressing. It's gorgeous. - Our featured track is "Monsters Among Men," from the new American Opera album, "Small Victories." It's a fabulous new wave Americana record with ridiculous artwork and some really cool stories! Check out the full album now! - As an added bonus, click here to check out an in-depth interview with John from American Opera. Chapter 83: "Sky Beats Gold" ...as read by Marty Lunn of Zao and Young Fox Marty Lunn has been heavily involved in the greater Pittsburgh scene for his entire life. He goes into a lot of detail back in March on the Urban Achiever podcast, but I wanted to hit on a few different things than what he rolled out with Bill. I became friends with Marty because of my relationship with Scott and Zao and we got to spend some quality time in the van between Canada and NY. Marty and I try to cover some of the in-between stuff that he hasn't discussed before...including a lil' hockey. I'm happy to help his band Young Fox with their full length coming "Sky Beats Gold" on Spartan Records in Mid-January! Check out a clip of the song "Sometimes The Monsters Win" at the end of this chapter. Thank you Marty and thank John from Spartan. I will never forget that the first thing Jon did when he picked up the phone for the podcast. He asked about my life and took the time to find out more about Washed Up Emo before the interview even started. I was blown away at how humble he was but also so proud of his life's work. It’s an honor to be able to present a small slice of Jon that many of his friends and family know so well. I count myself included. This podcast is supposed to be evergreen. You can listen in 5 years or in 10 years and know a good chunk of that band or era and some context to the scene and a way to look back but also look ahead. Jon was that last point to a T. He was so happy talking about the history but also his new music and what was next. Sadly, this was the last interview Jon did. I can only hope those close or those who have no idea who Jon Bunch was take and learn something from one of the most important voices in not only the independent scene but music in general. I am eternally grateful Jon took the time to talk with me about his life that will thankfully live on in aural form so someone can stumble upon Jon's music forever.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/washedupemo)
