On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got two old friends who've contributed more than their fair share to the emo world and beyond and lived to tell the tale: Evan Weiss and Chris Carrabba. Carrabba is of course the main creative force behind Dashboard Confessional, whose early albums—specifically The Swiss Army Romance and The Places You Have Come to Fear the Most—basically invented the genre's confessional acoustic-based era. He could've made those records a dozen times over the past 20 years, but instead Carrabba filled out Dashboard's sound over the years, stretching out where the muse took him. Now an elder statesman, Carrabba returned to that simpler sound but brought years of wisdom with him for 2022's All the Truth That I Can Tell, which he talks about in this great chat. Dashboard will head out on a long summer tour with Goo Goo Dolls starting July 13, but not before playing a show with Weiss's band in Vegas the day before. Weiss's band would be Pet Symmetry, a trio he's been part of for the past decade or so, and which just released an excellent new album: Big Symmetry is a big, loveable, tuneful set of songs that all start with the word “big.” It's a joyful blast of pop-punk that feels like a deliberate antidote to tough times. It may also be a bit of a reaction to what fans would consider Weiss's main band, Into It. Over It., which flies that emo flag a bit higher. But whatever, those tags are pretty silly when we ought to be talking about songs. Speaking of, check out the song “Big Wish” from the album Big Symmetry right here. In this wide-ranging chat, Carrabba and Weiss talk about the holiness of punk community, the accidental origins of Dashboard Confessional plus that band's long hiatus and rebirth, and how the financial collapse of 2008 had opposite effects on their careers. It's true! Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Chris Carrabba and Evan Weiss for chatting. We chat with our favorite Canadian guitarist maybe a little too much about his band, C*nter, but then we dive more into his musical journey, from forming Moneen (turns out we've been mispronouncing it for years), going on a hiatus, and now writing new songs (exclusive!), Kenny explains how Say Anything drove him to drink, Reed and Kenny reminisce over their Grand Canyon adventure and playing together in Say Anything, we get nerdy talking about drums, Kenny's experience drum teching, and we give Ringo the credit that he deserves, Kenny has to dial back the theatrics while playing in Dashboard Confessional, What Is Lug? (Trademark pending), and then we just get loopy at the end and don't know how to say goodbye to each other.--Follow Kenny: instagram.com/kennybridges Leave Us A Voicemail: (470) 588-5940Follow: instagram.com/drumsquestionmark

Interview by Angela CroudaceCelebrating two decades of making music, Mayday Parade frontman Derek Sanders recently opened up about the band's journey, the impact of their classic album A Lesson in Romantics, and the excitement surrounding their 20th-anniversary celebrations.“It's wild,” Sanders says of the milestone. Reflecting on how the band, formed in Tallahassee, Florida, had no idea where their musical path would take them, he describes the rollercoaster ride of watching the band's growth from young dreamers to global musicians. “It feels like it's both gone really fast, but also does kind of feel like 20 years,” he admits. Despite the speed of it all, Sanders is deeply grateful for the experiences that have come with Mayday Parade's success. The band's debut album has become a staple of pop-punk, still resonating with fans worldwide. Sanders speaks proudly of the record, remembering the raw energy they poured into it and the overwhelming joy of still playing tracks from it today. “I'm so proud of what it's become,” he says. “The fact that we can still play songs from that record and get the reactions we do is insane.”Having toured with bands like All Time Low and Simple Plan, Mayday Parade has built a rich history of unforgettable experiences. One of Sanders' earliest and most meaningful memories comes from a show in their hometown, where they opened for Further Seems Forever. “I got to sing with them on stage,” Sanders recalls, describing the experience as a full-circle moment in their career. When asked about his current musical inspirations, Sanders points to artists like Dashboard Confessional and Ben Folds. Though these influences have remained staples throughout his life, his recent obsession with Dashboard Confessional has reignited a deep appreciation for Chris Carrabba's songwriting and vocal prowess. In celebration of their 20 years, Mayday Parade are releasing a three-part album project, with the first instalment out soon. Sanders teases that the album balances their classic sound with fresh, new elements. “It feels like a good step forward for our band,” he says, hinting at exciting new musical directions. As for their upcoming tour, including their return to Australia, Sanders shares the excitement of playing bigger shows with a full production. “These will be the biggest shows we've had in Australia,” he says, reminiscing about their past tours with All Time Low and the fun times spent at Melbourne's Heartbreaker bar.Looking back at the past 20 years, Sanders reflects on the importance of staying creatively in control. The band's journey has been full of lessons, including navigating major label pressures, but he's proud of how they've found their footing. And with a legacy spanning two decades, Mayday Parade is still just as dedicated to their music and fans as ever.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

In this episode, we delve into the fascinating journey of a band that emerged from the fusion of passion and persistence. Our story begins a decade ago with Eric Stenman, who was writing heavier music that he never imagined would reach the public eye. Eric's early musical journey intertwined with Aaron Bruno's in the late '90s through their shared love for hardcore music. Despite their separate creative paths —Eric focusing on music production and Aaron eventually forming Awolnation—they would later find a way to create a band together (although they have been working together for years with Aaron writing for Awolantion and Eric producing all of the records).  After years of Eric leaning more towards production and not playing much instrumentals, Aaron, having heard some of Eric's latest work, was impressed and wanted to continue on other songs. This pivotal moment led to the formation of a new band that stands apart from traditional music paths. Unlike many bands that spend years on the road in a van, this group is driven by their love for hardcore music and are doing it because their passions align.  With four songs already released, including the recent track "Bazooka" on August 2, listeners can expect some exciting surprises and new directions from this band. The new record will be out on October 4th  In our conversation with Eric, we also explored his impressive career as a producer. Since 1997, he's avoided the day job to build a notable resume working with bands like Deftones, Weezer, Thrice, Dashboard Confessional, Senses Fail, and Awolnation. We asked Eric to reflect on his experiences with these iconic groups, providing listeners with insightful anecdotes and behind-the-scenes stories. Tune in to hear about the origins of the band, their unique approach to music, and Eric's reflections on his storied career in the industry.

Billy has secured countless sync placements for his artists and collaborated with major publishers like Warner Chapel, Secret Road, and Position Music. We'll dive deep into the life of a highly successful producer and have a bit of fun along the way. In this episode, Billy and I reminisce about the iconic Death Star studio where we've both spent many nights recording. We explore what it's like to be immersed in LA's vibrant music scene and how it fuels creativity and opportunities. Billy shares invaluable insights on collaborating online versus in-person and the magic that happens when artists and producers can vibe off each other in the same room. We also discuss his approach to making music that resonates authentically, aiming for sync success without compromising artistic integrity.  Tune in to learn from Billy's experiences and get inspired by his journey in the music licensing world. Guest Bio:  Billy Lefler's journey through the music industry is marked by the accolades he's received and the platinum success of his projects. At the heart of his career lies a dedication to storytelling through sound, facilitated by his diverse roles predominantly as a producer, alongside being a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist.  From the indie pop charm of Ingrid Michaelson to the rock anthems crafted for Dashboard Confessional and the dynamic beats for Gym Class Heroes, Billy's adaptability shines through. Working with artists like Avril Lavigne, Patrick Stump of Fall Out Boy, and America's Got Talent standout Mandy Harvey, he has showcased his capacity to excel across various musical landscapes. Billy's contributions have not only garnered industry accolades but have also made a lasting impact on the music scene. His production work on Ingrid Michaelson's hit "Be Ok" is a prime example of his talent for creating catchy, emotionally resonant tracks that connect with audiences far and wide. Moreover, his production efforts helped propel Laura Jansen's album Bells to platinum status in The Netherlands, solidifying his role as a pivotal figure in music production on an international scale. Beyond his collaborations with individual artists, Billy's skills and vision have been recognized and sought after by leading record labels and publishers, such as Warner Chappell, Secret Road, and Position Music. Billy Lefler's knack for sync licensing underscores his unparalleled ability to weave music into the fabric of popular culture. His success in securing placements for the artists he works with in TV shows, advertisements, and movie trailers include: Ad spots for McDonald's and Evian Water, episodes from "The Blacklist," "Grey's Anatomy," and "The Vampire Diaries," “Pretty Little Lies,” “So You Think You Can Dance,” “One Tree Hill,” “Switched At Birth,” “Smallville,” various movie trailer campaigns, and a significant highlight was the placement of Daniel Blake's cover of Dido's "Here With Me" in the season finale of the CBS show "Roswell." About the Hosts: We're Sonnet Simmons and John Clinebell, 2 indie artists who have found success and creative fulfillment through licensing our music for ads, TV shows and films.  We were once so disheartened and discouraged that our music wasn't being noticed or valued through traditional methods. So we both started on a journey to find another way. For us, that “third door” was sync! We had the pleasure of interviewing onelinedrawing over Zoom video!Jonah Matranga has been making music for over 30 years.A prolific artist, he has become an enduring institution in the scene with a devoted fan base, rich lineage, and varied music career. Jonah has often straddled the line between the underground and mainstream. He's worked with indie labels like Jade Tree and majors such as Atlantic, having fronted the bands FAR, NEW END ORIGINAL, and GRATITUDE.His music has influenced bands from Deftones to Blink-182, and he was there for emo and post-hardcore giants in their earliest beginnings — taking bands such as Thursday and Dashboard Confessional on tour. Simply put, the scene cannot be separated from Jonah's art.Jonah has always written from the heart and performed in an intimate way that few others have accomplished. From basements to massive festivals, he brings the same energy to them all: raw honesty and an ability to make every show unique and personal. This is most apparent in Jonah's solo and collaborative project ONELINEDRAWING. Jonah's solo performance has always been about connecting with fans in an intimate setting, where they often perform with only a guitar and R2D2 sidekick.Sketchbook is the latest release from ONELINEDRAWING, featuring a collection of songs from Jonah's early solo years, 1999-2001, completely remastered for vinyl. The album features originals and renditions of the likes of 7 Seconds and Jawbox, as well as the Sense Field split honoring the late Jon Bunch(Sense Field/Further Seems Forever). The LP also includes liner notes and zine by Norman Brannon (Texas is the Reason/New End Original).Sketchbook exists as both a time capsule and thank you letter to fans and music itself — a combination of the period in which Jonah first embarked on his solo journey and a celebration of the vitality that music and community not only affords him but all of us.We want to hear from you! The Talk of Fame Podcast got to talk with  Eric Paquette! “21 Ways My Life Is Great” out April 19th 2024, is the second single from YOUTHYEAR - the moniker of Eric Paquette, a Nashville based artist, songwriter, and producer. YOUTHYEAR has collaborated with alt giants Lit, Dashboard Confessional, Letdown, and Michigander along with Butch Walker, Desmond Child, Colin Brittain, members of No Doubt and more. YOUTHYEAR's debut single “Basement” was the first step outside of the writer/producer chair and into the artist spotlight.  YOUTHYEAR & rock legend Carlo Colasacco (Shinedown, Sueco) co-wrote and co-produced the song which features a music video that tips its hat to Nirvana's “In Bloom'' and Weezer's “Buddy Holly'' videos and their satirical portrayal of the late ‘50s early ‘60s. Sonically the song also draws influence from both bands and the more melodic side of grunge and pop-rock of the ‘90s. Upbeat and all-things-alt-rock, it's bursting with bright melodies that sit next to melodic powerhouse classics like The All American Rejects and new acts like The Band Camino. Late ‘90s icon Ajay Popoff of the band Lit (My Own Worst Enemy) joined in on group vocals as well as makes a feature in the music video, co-directed by Nick Stafford (All Time Low, Charlotte Sands, Boys Like Girls) and YOUTHYEAR who also co-styled the video.  Lyrically “21 Ways My Life Is Great” is a “so glad it's finally over” breakup song that captures the explosive joy of finally being free of a toxic relationship.``Guess my mom was right ‘about your type” is just one of the playful ways'' Eric is grateful to be onto better things. Bottom line, there are no regrets over the breakup in this song. I started blogging in college on LiveJournal. (Remember that? It was a whole lot of Dashboard Confessional lyrics and was incredibly emo.) In 2007, I moved to WordPress and wanted to bring joy to people through my satirical writing. I wanted to be the next version of “The Onion,” if you can believe it. Then, over the years, the content began to change. I started sharing more about my life and suddenly I realized that there were people reading this blog that weren't just my dad and my sister. So, while the content certainly changed over the last 13+ years, the mission certainly has not. True joy from within looks different than I thought it once did. When you step into this little space, I genuinely want you to feel like you're hanging out with a dear friend. So, what are you going to find here? Here I'll talk about everything from ethical fashion and clean beauty, to my passion for ending human trafficking, child sponsorship with Compassion International, clean beauty (and my favorite mascaras!), real food and some easy recipes, my life as a wife and mom, and so much more. It is a spiritual kingdom whose entities have lived on through adapting into various cultures across time. Note: We do say episode 162 during the episode. The confusion is Gonz' fault. He's getting old and grumpy. Babylon is everywhere. It is not a mere physical location of historical significance and its civilizations, cultures and people groups throughout history. It is a spiritual kingdom whose entities have lived on through adapting into various cultures across time. Escaping it would mean to move away from its influence whether one lives in 33 AD or 2023 America. It would mean to identify with the one kingdom that stands for truth, light, and love; the Kingdom of Heaven. The transcendent nature of the Kingdom of Heaven not only helps us understand the nature of intelligent evil, but can help us navigate through life's most challenging moments as we come face to face with them in the valley.   But how might one express such a notions that communicates the intricacies and invites others to investigate such large topics?  Psalm 150:3-6 3Praise Him with trumpet sound;          Praise Him with harp and lyre. 4Praise Him with timbrel and dancing;          Praise Him with stringed instruments and pipe. 5Praise Him with loud cymbals;          Praise Him with resounding cymbals. 6Let everything that has breath praise the LORD.          Praise the LORD!
