Chris Carrabba (Dashboard Confessional) with Evan Weiss (Pet Symmetry, Into It. Over It.)

On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got two old friends who've contributed more than their fair share to the emo world and beyond and lived to tell the tale: Evan Weiss and Chris Carrabba. Carrabba is of course the main creative force behind Dashboard Confessional, whose early albums—specifically The Swiss Army Romance and The Places You Have Come to Fear the Most—basically invented the genre's confessional acoustic-based era. He could've made those records a dozen times over the past 20 years, but instead Carrabba filled out Dashboard's sound over the years, stretching out where the muse took him. Now an elder statesman, Carrabba returned to that simpler sound but brought years of wisdom with him for 2022's All the Truth That I Can Tell, which he talks about in this great chat. Dashboard will head out on a long summer tour with Goo Goo Dolls starting July 13, but not before playing a show with Weiss's band in Vegas the day before. Weiss's band would be Pet Symmetry, a trio he's been part of for the past decade or so, and which just released an excellent new album: Big Symmetry is a big, loveable, tuneful set of songs that all start with the word “big.” It's a joyful blast of pop-punk that feels like a deliberate antidote to tough times. It may also be a bit of a reaction to what fans would consider Weiss's main band, Into It. Over It., which flies that emo flag a bit higher. But whatever, those tags are pretty silly when we ought to be talking about songs. Speaking of, check out the song “Big Wish” from the album Big Symmetry right here. In this wide-ranging chat, Carrabba and Weiss talk about the holiness of punk community, the accidental origins of Dashboard Confessional plus that band's long hiatus and rebirth, and how the financial collapse of 2008 had opposite effects on their careers. It's true! Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Chris Carrabba and Evan Weiss for chatting. Interview by Angela CroudaceCelebrating two decades of making music, Mayday Parade frontman Derek Sanders recently opened up about the band's journey, the impact of their classic album A Lesson in Romantics, and the excitement surrounding their 20th-anniversary celebrations.“It's wild,” Sanders says of the milestone. Reflecting on how the band, formed in Tallahassee, Florida, had no idea where their musical path would take them, he describes the rollercoaster ride of watching the band's growth from young dreamers to global musicians. “It feels like it's both gone really fast, but also does kind of feel like 20 years,” he admits. Despite the speed of it all, Sanders is deeply grateful for the experiences that have come with Mayday Parade's success. The band's debut album has become a staple of pop-punk, still resonating with fans worldwide. Sanders speaks proudly of the record, remembering the raw energy they poured into it and the overwhelming joy of still playing tracks from it today. “I'm so proud of what it's become,” he says. “The fact that we can still play songs from that record and get the reactions we do is insane.”Having toured with bands like All Time Low and Simple Plan, Mayday Parade has built a rich history of unforgettable experiences. One of Sanders' earliest and most meaningful memories comes from a show in their hometown, where they opened for Further Seems Forever. “I got to sing with them on stage,” Sanders recalls, describing the experience as a full-circle moment in their career. When asked about his current musical inspirations, Sanders points to artists like Dashboard Confessional and Ben Folds. Though these influences have remained staples throughout his life, his recent obsession with Dashboard Confessional has reignited a deep appreciation for Chris Carrabba's songwriting and vocal prowess. In celebration of their 20 years, Mayday Parade are releasing a three-part album project, with the first instalment out soon. Sanders teases that the album balances their classic sound with fresh, new elements. “It feels like a good step forward for our band,” he says, hinting at exciting new musical directions. As for their upcoming tour, including their return to Australia, Sanders shares the excitement of playing bigger shows with a full production. “These will be the biggest shows we've had in Australia,” he says, reminiscing about their past tours with All Time Low and the fun times spent at Melbourne's Heartbreaker bar.Looking back at the past 20 years, Sanders reflects on the importance of staying creatively in control. The band's journey has been full of lessons, including navigating major label pressures, but he's proud of how they've found their footing. And with a legacy spanning two decades, Mayday Parade is still just as dedicated to their music and fans as ever.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

With their brand new album Daisy Chain dropping into the world today, beloved Melbourne indie rockers Slowly Slowly have astonishingly levelled up from already great heights. Following the release of Race Care Blues and Race Car Blues Chapter Two in 2020 and 2021 respectively, Daisy Chain welcomes listeners with open arms into a world of catchy tunes and starkly intimate lyricism. Showcasing themselves as insatiable leaders in the modern indie and rock realms, Daisy Chain packs in hooks, heartfelt narratives and the creamy yet captivating trademark sound that Slowly Slowly have spent over seven years finessing; and, in frontman Ben Stewart's case, it's been a lifetime and a labour of love that has ultimately led to the most assured and authentic version of the band to date. Notably covering some darker lyrical territory on album #5, Daisy Chain showcases Ben's own personal strides to discover himself both as an artist and a human in general; and the end result is simultaneously something that can soundtrack your summer and a collection of songs that intimately challenge and inspire the status quo. Punchy yet poignant, catchy yet cathartic, Daisy Chain is a true triumph for Slowly Slowly; and while it's strictly not a lockdown album, as Ben elaborates on in today's episode, its end result mixes songs years in the making with a brand new sonic identity for the band. Fresh off some epic shows around the country and ahead of some acoustic launch shows and a screening tomorrow night of the Slowly Slowly documentary Back To Basics, Back On My Bullsh*t, join Ben on Behind The Soundcheck with host Tiana Speter today, diving a little deeper into Daisy Chain, songs 10 decades in the making with childhood heroes and returning to play on the very stage that launched his live musical journey as a teenager. IN THIS EPISODE:The juxtaposition between Race Car Blues and Daisy Chain, self-actualisation, and the overall purpose that drives and underpins Daisy Chain overall. Ben strictly not referring to Daisy Chain as a lockdown record, but the inevitable shape the record took as a result of the past few years. The reality of launching Race Car Blues just as the pandemic was starting to take hold in Australia, but how the time also allowed the band to truly ask themselves: what kind of band do they want to be?The integral role of Daisy Chain's title track on the album, the loop-like structure of the album explained, and metaphors related to relationships and volcanoes that ultimately inspired the album title. The extensive backstory a decade in the making that saw the track Moving Trains finally evolve from a demo that nearly made it onto every previous Slowly Slowly album into a full-blown track on Daisy Chain; and it also becoming a genuine "sliding doors" moment for Ben with Chris Carrabba of Dashboard Confessional fame. Ben's experience recently returning to Croydon to play in the very venue that he frequented as a kid, performing on the very stage where he played his first ever live gig at as a teenager. The importance of all ages shows, and Ben's passion for helping young people find their path with music.MORE SLOWLY SLOWLY INFO: https://www.slowlyslowlyband.com/MORE THE SOUNDCHECK INFO: https://www.thesoundcheck.org/

In 2000, Chris Carrabba of Further Seems Forever would release his first solo album Swiss Army Romance under the name Dashboard Confessional. He would soon leave Further Seems Forever to focus solely on Dashboard Confessional, citing that his desire to do the hard work it would take to be a successful musician was greater than that of his bandmates. Dashboard Confessional have gone on to release multiple gold records and despite a hiatus between 2011-2015 the band endures to this day, partly owing to Carrabba's legacy as an emo legend but more so because of hard work, a passion for fans and people, and authentic songwriting. On today's episode, I do a deep dive on Dashboard Confessional's second official full-length album "The Place You Have Come to Fear the Most". The Places You Have Come to Fear the Most is the second studio album recorded by the American emo band Dashboard Confessional, released on March 20, 2001, through Vagrant Records. Dashboard Confessional started as an acoustic side project for vocalist/guitarist Chris Carrabba while he was fronting Further Seems Forever. The project's first album The Swiss Army Romance was released in early 2000 through local independent label Fiddler Records. Using his connections within the punk scene, Carrabba was able to perform on a few tours. Though the audience wasn't used to acoustic instrumentation, Carrabba won the crowds over. Eventually demand for the album was exceeding the label's supply, which resulted in owner Amy Fleisher licensing the record to Drive-Thru Records. In October, Carrabba announced his departure from Further Seems Forever. LET'S CONNECT: Kyle's Instagram Kyle's Facebook Email: Kyledevlinfitness@gmail.com

The great Chris Carrabba of Dashboard Confessional joins Ted Stryker for another episode of Tuna on Toast with Stryker.  Dashboard just released their new album titled All The Truth That I Can Tell.   The guys talk about the new album, the excitement and anxiety that comes with it, Chris is also super happy to see the vinyl in person which Stryker has out on the center table.   Chris discusses playing live and his goal for every live show!  Chris talks about writing the album before the pandemic, he also talks about working with James Paul Wisner again! James produced early Dashboard albums like The Swiss Army Romance and The Places You Have Come to Fear the Most.   Chris tells Stryker the new album was written pre-pandemic.    Stryker asks Chris about his mindset in 1998-1999 when it came to actually being a professional musician!  Chris talks about what his musical goals were and also about being in the band Further Seems Forever.  Chris tells Stryker how important Napster and LimeWire were for his career! It was bad for the music business but good for Chris!    Chris talks about watching surf and skate videos and loving the music and waiting for the end credits to see who the bands were.  A few bands in particular that Chris liked were Minor Threat, Fugazi, and Operation Ivy and many bands from the label Epitaph (shoutout Brett Gurewitz) and Fat Wreck Chords (shoutout Fat Mike)    Chris talks about the Florida music scene and how inclusive it was.   Chris discusses going on the road for his first tour with New Found Glory, followed by a tour with Face to Face, H2O and Snapcase and how unbelievably cool all those bands were!  Chris tells Stryker about the pep talk that Toby Morse from H2O gave him!  The guys talk about the When We Were Young Festival taking place in Vegas with bands like Thursday and My Chemical Romance.  The guys chat about navigating the music business. Chris tells Stryker about the emotions that came along with the success.....from Screaming Infidelities to Hands Down to Vindicated on the Spider Man 2 soundtrack and everything in between.  Stryker asks Chris about his terrible motorcycle accident that happened in June of 2020. Chris had to learn how to play guitar again AND how to brush his teeth and lift his arms above his head. Stryker shifts gears and asks about first learning how to play guitar, Chris talks about being self taught but also taking 10 lessons at a guitar shop a few years ago and going undercover to do it.  Speaking of the new album, Chris Carrabba's favorite song off the new album is the track called "Me and Mine" which is about his family.  Chris gives details on the new album artwork!  Make sure to catch Dashboard and Jimmy Eat World on tour!  Thank you again for watching and listening to another episode of Tuna on Toast!

As a music fan of a certain age, I can be a bit partial to the 1990s, and to that era's emo-rock in particular, so this week's Talkhouse pairing speaks to me: It's Jim Adkins of Jimmy Eat World and Chris Carrabba of Dashboard Confessional. Jimmy Eat World started life in 1993 in Arizona, pretty much straight out of high school. Before they knew what hit them, they had a major label deal with Capitol and a hearty underground following for their catchy, raw songs. A rollercoaster of a career eventually led to a massive radio hit in 2001: “The Middle”—you know it, believe me—which launched them to new heights but didn't really change the band's fundamentals. They've continued making excellent records since, up to and including 2019's Surviving. One of that album's best songs is the focus of part of today's podcast, too: “555.”  Dashboard Confessional, which is the product of singer-songwriter Chris Carrabba, started life a little later in the ‘90s, but also with a bang. His heart-on-sleeve lyrics almost immediately inspired sold-out shows and tear-stained singalongs. In other words, the “emo” tag actually makes some sense for once. The pandemic cut short Carrabba's touring look back at 20 years of Dashboard Confessional, but it allowed him to finish a brand new album called All the Truth That I Can Tell. Now Carrabba and Adkins aren't just here because they're pals and they come from similar backgrounds. They're also bringing their bands together through March on a co-headlining tour dubbed “Surviving The Truth" and then both bands will be part of the When We Were Young festival in Las Vegas in October. All the dates can be found on either band's website, naturally. Adkins and Carrabba chat a lot about songwriting here, specifically about techniques for letting a song find itself. They also ponder whether it's better to have a big radio hit, like Jimmy Eat World did, or to be associated with a huge Spider-Man movie, as Dashboard Confessional was. And both seem delighted, even after all this time, to be able to make music their living. Enjoy.   Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Chris Carrabba and Jim Adkins for chatting. Hey there friends! On today's episode, I'm really excited because I'm speaking with my friend Christie Gee. Christie Gee is many things, one of which is the podcast host for her show The Christie Gee Podcast. She's interviewed some amazing artists like Chris Carrabba from Dashboard Confessional, Kris Roe of The Ataris, Matt Pryor of The Get Up Kids, and many more. She's also an extremely creative person, she's an artist who does custom portraits for folks, as well as a maker of buttons, stickers, pins, and art. She's even worked on some album art which is really cool. I started following her a few years ago on social media, and I've always enjoyed her enthusiasm for all things 90's, but also because she's a fan of pop punk and emo of the 90's and into the 2000's. I love that she's a big fan of Empire Records as that's one of my favorite movies that I grew up with and it makes total sense that she's making buttons that not only honor that film but pays tribute to so many different bands and things. We talk about growing up in a small town in Texas, moving to California, embracing country music, selling stuff to celebrities, doing creative work, and pursuing your dreams despite all the naysayers and doubters. It was an absolute pleasure speaking with Christie. I really do think we could talk about this stuff for hours. I had a lot of fun. So, without further ado, please enjoy this wide-ranging and fun convo with Christie Gee.

No new information on the Midtown helicopter crash as the NTSB continues their investigation, but the incident has stoked local officials to criticize the conditions that led to the crash: Carolyn Maloney, the Congressmember who represents the district where the helicopter came down renewed her calls for private transit and tourism helicopter flights to be banned over the city. After a deadly helicopter crash atop the Pan Am building helipad in 1977, flights to helipads in Manhattan were banned, but no new restrictions have been put in place despite multiple deadly crashes around Manhattan by helicopters and small planes. In a statement on Representative Maloney's web site, she says: "We cannot rely on good fortune to protect people on the ground. It is past time for the FAA to ban unnecessary helicopters from the skies over our densely packed urban city. The risks to New Yorkers are just too high." Senator Chuck Schumer also called on the FAA to require helicopters be equipped with flight data recorders, and cited years of recommendations from the NTSB that the FAA should mandate flight data and cockpit voice recorders. Schumer noted how the lack of flight data will now impede the investigation. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand added: "After last week's helicopter crash in midtown, the FAA should immediately reconsider the recommendations federal transportation safety investigators have urged since 2011 and take steps now to implement these basic safety features. Flight data recorders provide critical information to help prevent future crashes, and I urge the FAA to act quickly to ensure black boxes are in every helicopter." A memorial service was held for the helicopter pilot, Tim McCormack, in Poughkeepsie, NY. A young boy entered a real-life spy thriller 66 years ago on June 22, 1953 in The Case of the Hollow Nickel — If you're looking to pass along some secrets of your own, you can order a modern-day hollow nickel on Amazon designed to hide a MicroSD memory card or an accurate replica of the 1953 hollow nickel from spy-coins.com. This week finally brought the sad confirmation that a swimmer has been found dead after going missing during a race in the Hudson River. Renowned AIDS researcher, Charles van der Horst, had been competing in the Eight Bridges Hudson River Swim, a 120-mile, week-long competition that was scheduled from June 8th to June 15th, with swimmers covering about 17 miles per day between Hudson River bridges. On Friday, June 14th, Charles had disappeared beneath the water near the George Washington Bridge and did not resurface. His disappearance occured at the end of that day's swim, which had begun 15.7 miles away at the Tappan Zee Bridge. The Coast Guard and NYPD boats began searching immediately, but it wasn't until four days later that his body was discovered near Fort Tyron, north of the GWB. In a statement from the van der Horst family, Charles is described as living life to the fullest and will be remembered for his work in social justice and in the medical field. He immigrated to the United States as an infant from the Netherlands, and was the son of a Holocaust survivor. As a professor of medicine, he provided care to HIV/AIDS patients, contributed meaningful research concerning the diseases, and volunteered at a free clinic after his retirement. When Charles disappeared, he was under the watch of safety crew in kayaks following each swimmer, and another participant describes the extreme care taken to ensure the safety of each swimmer, so it was unclear how this tragedy took place. Last week I told you about the very first roller coaster that was modeled after a mine cart, but 92 years ago on June 26, 1927, The Coney Island Cyclone wooden roller coaster opens to the public A baby doll wearing a "Crawling Dead" t-shirt was realistic enough to be officially pronounced dead by first responders after an early-morning 911 call on June 18th. A jogger spotted the horrifying scene of a baby lying face-down in the grass at 215th Street and 35th Avenue in Bayside, Queens and police quickly arrived to seal off a crime scene. It wasn't until hours later that officials announced it was actually realistic doll that they had earlier pronounced dead without physically inspecting it. In a statement, the FDNY described the doll as having "discoloration consistent with signs of prolonged death" as it was painted gray and blue to simulate loss of oxygen.
