Daily Devotions from Lutheran Hour Ministries

Luke 23:39-43 - One of the criminals who were hanged railed at Him, saying, "Are You not the Christ? Save Yourself and us!" But the other rebuked him, saying, "Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? And we indeed justly, for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this Man has done nothing wrong." And he said, "Jesus, remember me when You come into Your kingdom." And He said to him, "Truly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in paradise."

I grew up in a large family, where I was number 5 out of 6;  the youngest was my little sister, a pretty, quiet little blonde who went through a several-year period of frailty and illness, which she eventually outgrew.  Interestingly, due to her physical condition, she lived with a persistent, irrational fear that our parents were going to die and leave our family without anyone to care for us.  She would cling to our mother, day after day, worrying about mom dying and leaving her; she was beside herself!  Fortunately, everyone stayed healthy, and she grew up to become strong and outgoing and lived a confident and happy life.                I've often thought about her concern for our parents' premature deaths.  What was going on with her?  Why was she so afraid?  And, to be sure, don't many of us live with some nagging fears in the back of our minds that someone might die prematurely?   One of the greatest gifts that God has given us through Jesus, in addition to the gift of salvation through the Gospel message, is the conviction that when we die, God will take care of us!  This is a gift that literally 'keeps on giving,' as all of us face the possibility of death every day of our lives, even when we don't think about it!   Here is one of the passages in the Bible upon which this conviction is based:  The scene is focused on Jesus hanging on the cross hours before his death.  People are mocking Jesus and taunting him, as is another thief hanging on an adjacent cross.  He says to Jesus, "Are You not the Christ?  Save Yourself and us!"  In response, a different thief, hanging on another cross, says to him, "Do you not even fear God since you are under the same sentence of condemnation?   "And we indeed justly, for we are receiving what we deserve for our deeds, but this man has done nothing wrong."  And he was saying, "Jesus, remember me when You come in Your kingdom!"  Here is Jesus' response to the thief who asked  him for help, "Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in Paradise."  Luke 23:39-43             That is one of the clearest passages in the Bible which speaks  of the Christian belief in life after death, "Today, you shall be with me."  Jesus, nearing his own death, not only comforts another facing his own mortality, he offers us all lasting words, solace, and hope as we consider our own deaths!              We are aware that we shall die at some point in the future, as will everyone!  Because of the unknown concerning death, there is an almost unlimited fear and discomfort with this truth, and  literally hundreds of differing religious and philosophical notions that deal with the question of "what happens when I die?"  But this one passage, spoken  by The One whom we believe to be the Son of God, with power, answers clearly, without any details, "Today, you shall be with me in Paradise."              The unnamed 'thief on the cross' could face his own death without fear simply because he had expressed his faith in Jesus!  He didn't have all the details, to be sure, but Jesus said he would never be alone.  Too, Jesus' words communicated no delays or complicated timelines: he would be in paradise "today."  And finally, the word paradise conveys an image of a place of peace, rest, and joy.  For those with faith in Jesus, life after death will be an eternal gift from God, based on God's love expressed through Jesus on the cross.  We do not have to 'earn' this gift; we merely receive it by faith, as did the thief on the cross.                 Won't you receive Jesus' offer of eternal life today?  Trust in him, and live forever!   Your support is invaluable in spreading our ministry's message. Tom welcomes back Peter Schiff, the CEO and Chief Economist of Euro Pacific Asset Management, Chairman of Schiff Gold, and host of Schiff Radio to the show. Peter discusses inflation, central banking policies, and the implications of stagflation on the economy. He emphasizes that inflation is fundamentally caused by an expansion in the money supply and credit, rather than rising prices alone. Schiff argues that the Federal Reserve's actions, including quantitative easing and low interest rates, have fueled inflation and exacerbated economic instability. Schiff critiques the government's handling of inflation, noting that it often deflects blame onto businesses or labor unions instead of addressing the root causes. He warns that continued deficit spending and debt accumulation will lead to higher inflation and potentially a financial crisis. Schiff also highlights the role of tariffs and trade policies in affecting prices and trade deficits, though he doubts their effectiveness in fundamentally altering the economic landscape. The discussion turns to gold and precious metals as a hedge against inflation. Schiff notes that despite record earnings from gold mining companies, investor sentiment remains cautious, with many preferring speculative assets like cryptocurrencies or AI stocks. He believes this presents an opportunity for investors to capitalize on undervalued gold mining stocks before prices rise significantly. Schiff also touches on the potential impact of rising interest rates in Japan and the yen carry trade, warning that unwinding these positions could disrupt global markets. Additionally, he discusses the role of central banks in buying gold as a form of portfolio insurance and predicts continued demand for precious metals as investors seek safe havens amid economic uncertainty. He is one of the few forecasters who accurately and publicly predicted the 2007 housing market collapse and subsequent 2008 financial crisis. His latest best-selling book, The Real Crash: America's Coming Bankruptcy - How to Save Yourself and Your Country, warns that the 2008 crisis was just the prelude to a larger sovereign debt crisis in the United States that may lead to a collapse of the US dollar. Peter recommends long-term investment in foreign markets with sound fiscal policies, as well as global commodities including buying gold, silver and other physical precious metals.

Can't Save Yourself. Today, Pastor Michael is continuing last week's theme on salvation, and we continue with our previous week's essential list: Everyone needs to be saved. You cannot save yourself. God sent the one and only savior, Jesus Christ, to save us. Pastor Michael picks up the story about 15 years after the Resurrection. Paul and Silas set out on a mission to start new communities of believers. Jerusalem and Antioch were two of the leading Christian areas at the time. During this trip, they enlisted Timothy as part of their troupe, and Luke may have also joined them.    So they headed west to Troas, and Paul had a vision, a waking one.  In this vision, he sees a man calling him from across the water, asking them to come to Macedonia to help them. So, the gang headed out, from Troas to Neopolis to Philipi, in Macedonia.  Paul was preaching there when Lydia approached them and offered them shelter in her home. Soon after they stayed with Lydia, they were out preaching again, and a slave approached them, having an ability to predict the future and screaming, “These are servants of the highest God!”  That sounds good because it was correct, but it was an evil spirit that gave her the ability to predict the future and shout what she did. But she followed them for days, continuing to shout this out.  Finally, Paul turned around and commanded the evil spirit to come out of the girl.  The spirit immediately left her, and she was fine!  Now, at this point, everyone is happy except the men who enslaved the girl to make money with her talents.  They dragged Paul and Silas back into the city, in the middle of a marketplace, and stirred up an angry mob. Paul and Silas are dragged to prison after suffering a good smackdown, courtesy of the crowd.  They prayed and sang praises to God in prison, and other prisoners and the jailer are listening. Then, an earthquake shook pretty much everything, and the jailer panicked. He understood that everyone would get away, and under Roman law, if a prisoner escaped, the guard could get the prisoner's sentence. So he was pretty freaked out! He draws his sword and places it against his chest to kill himself, and a shout tells him to STOP.  It's Paul.  Paul told him “Believe in Jesus, and you will be saved.” Roman guard, Jesus's love.  The perfect example of how salvation works. (CSB Bible Notes) 16:28 We are not told how Paul knew what the jailer was about to do. There may have been just enough light, Paul may have had prophetic insight, or he may have heard enough to surmise what was about to happen. 16:29-30 The jailer fell down trembling because he realized the earthquake was supernatural. This prompted him to ask the most important question in the book of Acts: What must I do to be saved? He was spared from death in the quake, spared from suicide by the discovery that the prisoners had not fled, and now wanted to be spared from God's future judgment. When developing a business centered around Japanese prints, there are many factors to consider: the audience, the history, and how you want to be perceived by the public. The appeal of the Japanese aesthetic, along with your own personal aesthetic and brand identity, can also be just as important to your business. On this episode of The Unfinished Print, I speak with Malene Wagner, a gallerist, curator, writer, and art historian whose business operates under the name Tiger Tanuki. Malene shares her passion for collecting and selling Japanese prints, and we explore the European perspective on Japanese prints and printmaking. We also dive into Japanese aesthetics and how they are interpreted through a Western lens. Additionally, Malene discusses how these aesthetics influence her brand, Tiger Tanuki, the role history plays in shaping her business, and her upcoming book. Simply click on the highlighted word or phrase. Artists works follow after the note if available. Pieces are mokuhanga unless otherwise noted. Dimensions are given if known. Print publishers are given if known. Malene Wagner & Tiger Tanuki - Instagram, website ukiyo-e - is a multi colour woodblock print generally associated with the Edo Period (1603-1867) of Japan. What began in the 17th Century as prints of only a few colours, evolved into an elaborate system of production and technique into the Meiji Period (1868-1912). With the advent of photography and other forms of printmaking, ukiyo-e as we know it today, ceased production by the late 19th Century.  Uniqlo -  a Japanese clothing brand known for its affordable, minimalist, and high-quality everyday wear. It focuses on functional designs, using innovative fabrics like Heattech for warmth and AIRism for breathability. Uniqlo is popular worldwide for offering essential wardrobe staples and often collaborates with well-known designers and artists to create unique collections. Clear Day With A Southern Breeze (1831) is a print usually known as "Red Fuji." From the series Thirty Six Views of Mt. Fuji this print was actually pink, red was used in later impressions by publisher Nishimuraya Yohachi.  The Great Wave off Kanagawa - is a woodblock print designed by Katsushika Hokusai in 1831. It is very famous.  Yayoi Kusama -  is a pioneering Japanese artist known for her immersive installations and polka dot motifs that explore themes of infinity, identity, and mental health. Born in 1929 in Matsumoto, Japan, Kusama began her artistic journey through painting and avant-garde practices, eventually moving to New York in the late 1950s, where she became a key figure in the pop art and feminist movements. Her works, range from large-scale installations like the "Infinity Mirror Rooms" to her vibrant sculptures and paintings. Kusama's art is a deeply personal expression of her own experiences with mental illness, transforming her obsessions into stunning visual experiences that resonate globally. Today, she is celebrated as one of the most influential contemporary artists, with exhibitions and installations that captivate audiences worldwide. From "Life Is The Heart of A Rainbow", Installation (2017) MANGA - was an exhibition from May 23 - August 26, 2019 held at the British Museum in London, England.  shin hanga - is a style of Japanese woodblock printmaking that emerged in the early 20th century, marking the end of the nishiki-e period. Originating around 1915 under the direction of Watanabe Shōzaburō (1885-1962), the art form responded to the foreign demand for "traditional" Japanese imagery. Shin hanga artists focused on motifs like castles, bridges, famous landscapes, and bamboo forests. The style was initiated when Watanabe discovered Austrian artist Fritz Capelari (1884-1950) and commissioned him to design prints for Watanabe's budding printing house. This collaboration led to the evolution of shin hanga into a distinctive new style of Japanese woodblock printing. The shin hanga movement thrived until its inevitable decline after the Second World War (1939-1945). sōsaku-hanga - or creative prints, is a style of printmaking which is predominantly, although not exclusively, prints made by one person. It started in the early twentieth century in Japan, in the same period as the shin-hanga movement. The artist designs, carves, and prints their own works. The designs, especially in the early days, may seem rudimentary but the creation of self-made prints was a breakthrough for printmakers moving away from where only a select group of carvers, printers and publishers created woodblock prints.  Tomoo Inagaki (1902-1980) - introduced to mokuhanga by Onchi Kōshirō and Un'cihi Hiratsuka in 1923. Beginning in 1924, Inagaki published his first prints in magazines such as Shi to hanga (issue 13), Hanga (issues 6, 9/10, 11, 14), and Kitsutsuki, and exhibited with the Nihon Sôsaku-Hanga Kyôkai (Japan Creative Print Association). He became a member of the Nihon Hanga Kyôkai (Japan Print Association) in 1932 and participated in various post-war international competitions, including the Paris, Tokyo, and Lugano biennales. His cat prints have been highly collectible. More info can be found at Viewing Japanese Prints, here. The Rival Cats - 18" x 24" (1960's - 1970's) Oliver Statler (1915-2002) -  was an American author and scholar and collector of mokuhanga. He had been a soldier in World War 2, having been stationed in Japan. After his time in the war Statler moved back to Japan where he wrote about Japanese prints. His interests were of many facets of Japanese culture such as accommodation, and the 88 Temple Pilgrimage of Shikoku. Oliver Statler, in my opinion, wrote one of the most important books on the sōsaku-hanga movement, “Modern Japanese Prints: An Art Reborn.” Frances Blakemore (1906-1997) - was an American-born artist, writer, philanthropist and curator of modern Japanese mokuhanga. She lived in Japan for over fifty years and helped to support the burgeoning sōsaku hanga print movement of the 1950s. Blakemore worked in mokuhanga (collaborating with Watanabe Shōzaburō) and making self-printed and carved prints. She also worked in oils.  Japanese Bath (1937) - 11 7/8" x 9 5/8 " Yoshitomo Nara - is a renowned Japanese contemporary artist and is celebrated for his distinctive paintings and sculptures featuring figures with large heads and expressive eyes, often exploring themes of innocence, rebellion, and solitude.  Change The History (2007) acrylic on wood 74-7/16" × 55-1/2" × 3-1/8" Mingei - is a Japanese term that translates to "folk craft" or "people's art." It refers to a movement that emerged in the early 20th century, emphasizing the value and beauty of traditional, handmade crafts created by anonymous artisans. Mingei focuses on everyday objects, such as pottery, textiles, furniture, and utensils, that reflect the culture and daily life of the people who made them. Lawrin Smith - is the author of the book "The Prints of Yoshitoshi: A Complete Illustrated Catalog" (2009). This comprehensive catalog focuses on the works of Tsukioka Yoshitoshi. The book provides detailed descriptions and illustrations of Yoshitoshi's prints, showcasing his significant contributions to the ukiyo-e genre and his influence on modern printmaking. Wabi-sabi is a Japanese aesthetic philosophy that celebrates the beauty of imperfection, transience, and the natural cycle of life. It combines two concepts: "wabi," which refers to rustic simplicity and tranquility found in nature, and "sabi,"which denotes the beauty that comes with age and wear. Wabi-sabi values simplicity, asymmetry, and the unique characteristics of objects and experiences, encouraging appreciation for the impermanent and humble aspects of life. This philosophy is reflected in various forms of art, architecture, and design, emphasizing natural materials and handcrafted items, and fostering mindfulness and acceptance of the imperfections that make life beautiful. A-yo - is a renowned Japanese artist associated with the Gutai Art Association, an avant-garde group that emerged in post-war Japan. Known for his vibrant colors and distinctive style, Ay-O's work often incorporates elements of nature, light, and movement, reflecting themes of playfulness and spontaneity. He engages with materials in innovative ways and has explored performance art as part of his creative expression. With extensive exhibitions both in Japan and internationally, Ay-O has made significant contributions to contemporary art, emphasizing the joy of creation and the aesthetic experience. Marcel Duchamp (1887–1968) was a French-American artist and a key figure in modern art, known for his significant influence on the Dada movement and conceptual art. He initially trained as a painter but became renowned for challenging traditional notions of art through his controversial works, such as "Fountain"(1917), a readymade sculpture of a urinal that questioned the definition of art and the role of the artist. Duchamp's other notable pieces, including "The Large Glass" (1915–1923) and "Bicycle Wheel" (1913), explored themes of chance and perception. His innovative ideas about art as a conceptual experience rather than a purely visual one continue to resonate, solidifying his status as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century.   Fountain (1917) replica (1964)   Naoko Matsubara - is a contemporary Japanese printmaker known for her expertise in mokuhanga. Born in Osaka, she studied at Kyoto Seika University, where she specialized in printmaking and mastered the techniques of this ancient art form. Matsubara's work often blends traditional methods with contemporary themes, exploring the relationship between nature, culture, and identity. Her prints are characterized by intricate details, vibrant colors, and a deep appreciation for the materials and techniques involved in woodblock printing. She teaches and promotes mokuhanga both in Japan and abroad, exhibiting her work in galleries and museums worldwide and receiving numerous awards for her contributions to the field. Naoko's interview with The Unfinished Print can be found, here.    Gihachiro Okuyama (1907-1981) - was a prominent Japanese printmaker and painter associated with the sōsaku hanga (creative prints) movement. Born in Tokyo, he studied traditional Japanese painting and was influenced by Western art styles, leading to innovative woodblock prints characterized by bold colors and dynamic compositions that blend traditional aesthetics with modern elements. Throughout his career, Okuyama exhibited extensively in Japan and internationally, contributing significantly to contemporary printmaking while also playing a vital role in art education by sharing his expertise with future generations. His work reflects a deep engagement with the cultural exchanges between East and West during the post-war period.     Moonscape - 10" x 21"   Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798-1861) - is considered one of the last “masters” of the ukiyo-e genre of Japanese woodblock printmaking. His designs range from landscapes, samurai and Chinese military heroes, as well as using various formats for his designs such as diptychs and triptychs.   Prince Rokuson Tsunemoto from Suikoden of Japanese Heroes (1843) 10" x 7"    Utagawa Kunisada III (1848–1920) - was a ukiyo-e print designer from the Utagawa school of mokuhanga. Kunisada III's print designs were designed during the transformation of the Edo Period (1603-1868) into the Meiji Period (1868-1912) of Japanese history, where his prints showed the technological, architectural and historical changes in Japan's history.    Kabuki Plays - Narukami and Princess Toki (ca. 1890's) triptych   Saitō Kiyoshi (1907-1997) - was a Japanese woodblock printmaker and artist who worked in the sōsaku hanga style of mokuhanga. HIs fame outside of Japan was fairly comprehensive with his peak fame being in the 1950's and 1960's. For a comprehensive book on his life and times, Saitō Kiyoshi: Graphic Awakening published by The John & Mable Ringling Museum is an excellent source. Can be found, here. Lecture by Dr. Paget about Saitō can be found, here. His print medium was etching, lithography, and woodcut. More information can be found here, at Christie's.      Anxiety (1894)   Pieter Cornelius Mondrian (1872-1944) - a Dutch artist who's work helped found De Stijl in 1917, a group of Dutch painters who helped codify Mondrian's abstraction and industrial design. Mondrian has a wide spectrum of works and styles created throughout his career. More information can be found, here from the Guggenheim.   Mill in Sunlight (1908). Credit: Kunstmuseum Den Haag, The Hague, The Netherlands © 2021 Mondrian/Holtzman Trust   Shunga - meaning "spring pictures," is a genre of Japanese erotic art that flourished during the Edo period (1603–1868), characterized by woodblock prints, paintings, and illustrated books depicting explicit sexual scenes often combined with humor, romance, and social commentary. Notable for its vibrant colors and intricate details, shunga explores themes of intimacy and sexuality, serving both as entertainment and education in a culture where such topics were often taboo. The genre reflects societal attitudes toward love and relationships and has a rich history despite facing censorship at various times. Today, shunga is recognized as a significant part of Japanese art history, appreciated for its aesthetic qualities and cultural context. Paul Binnie - Candlelight (1994) kappazuri print 24" x 18"  Tosa Prefecture - historically known as Tosa Province, is located in the southern part of Shikoku, Japan, and corresponds to present-day Kochi Prefecture. Renowned for its natural beauty, including mountains, rivers, and coastal landscapes, Tosa has a rich cultural heritage that includes traditional crafts like Tosa washi (handmade paper) and Tosa pottery. LENT: 40 Reflections and Mystical Revelations on the Passion

The two thieves crucified with Christ hang before us like a microcosm of Judgment Day. Enthroned on His Cross between them is the Judge, with the "sheep" at His right hand and the "goat" at His left-one on his way to eternal life, and the other to everlasting punishment. Dismas' example gives to even the worst of us a reason for hope, and a motive for humility. St. Augustine summed it up: "Do not despair; one of the thieves was saved; do not presume; one of the thieves was damned."When they came to the place which is called The Skull, there they crucified Him, and the criminals, one on the right and one on the left. ... One of the criminals who were hanged railed at Him, saying, "Are You not the Christ? Save Yourself and us!" But the other rebuked him, saying, "Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? And we indeed justly; for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this Man has done nothing wrong." And he said, "Jesus, remember me when You come into Your kingdom." And He said to him, "Truly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise." - Luke 23:33; 39-43With excerpts from:The Dolorous Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ by Bl. While Jesus’ substitutionary suffering and crucifixion means that he took upon himself what suffering and judgment was rightly due us; the gospel narratives of the crucifixion also challenges the Christian to share Christ's suffering. Via Dolorosa literally means “The Way of Sorrows”, marking the Stations of the Cross, the route that Jesus supposedly took from Pontius Pilate’s palace where he was sentenced to death, to the site of his crucifixion on the hill at Golgotha, beyond the city walls. Tourists & pilgrims have traveled that road for centuries reflecting on Christ’s procession through the streets of Jerusalem since the time of the Medieval Church. They want to experience Christ’s suffering and pain by walking in the supposedly same steps on the same streets that Christ stumbled through on his way to Golgotha and our salvation. Walking through a tourist area of Jerusalem can be a reflective exercise on who might have shared the same streets throughout history. But honest reflection of the soul and one’s response to Christ’s suffering can only happen in meditation on Scripture through prayer. A close & prayerful reflection on Matthew’s account of Jesus’ stumbling journey to his crucifixion reveals fulfillment of prophecy and two responses to Jesus and his suffering. One can either: 1. Share Christ’s Suffering: Simon of Cyrene 2. Save Yourself from Christ’s Suffering: the Mob, the Sanhedrin, and two Robbers [Insurrectionists] Let’s dig into Matthew’s account of Jesus’ journey from the Praetorium to Golgotha. While details on the steps taken by Jesus can be found in Luke’s and John’s gospels, Matthew wants his readers to reflect on the different reactions of a Gentile against the religious people of God.

What is our work as individuals in creating a more sustainable and regenerative future? Today's guest is Ian C Williams, author of  Soil & Spirit: Seeds of Purpose, Nature's Insight & the Deep Work of Transformational Change.  In his book, Ian draws the link between the work of self-actualization and the solution to the present day crisis we face both for our planet and for the human race. Years of addiction and recovery forced Ian to relentlessly pursue self-awareness and inner work, guiding him to what he refers to as an “environmental awakening.” All of this, combined with a single mystical experience, led him to an essential discovery: the only way out is in.  This conversation takes us on a deep dive into what our inner work as individuals might be, and how through self exploration and our reconnection with our place in the natural world, we can create cultural transformation from the inside out. In other words, the way to transform the world—is to transform ourselves. In this Casa De Confidence Podcast episode, I speak with Courtney McKenna, who joined us live from her childhood bedroom. She is a musician and singer-songwriter. During our conversation, she shared how incredible it is to see how far she has come from her days of singing at church. Courtney went to school for marketing, and after college, she went to New York and soon realized that although she enjoyed the different creatives she held, she was most passionate about her music. It took some time for Courtney to find the belief in herself fully. One of the main things she has learned is that the more confidence she has in herself, her music career and business grow exponentially. Courtney spoke candidly about her relationship with her alcoholic dad. Her dad has played a big part in her life and music. As the oldest of two kids, she blamed herself for her dad's addiction. She wrote her song "Save Yourself" for her dad, which helped her release many of the emotions she has dealt with.  Courtney learned the power of Music can be healing, and she can impact others through her art.The power of community is essential for all of us.Celebrating life and wins at all times is a good reminder that we are making progress. Courtney shares that confidence comes from showing up for yourself and giving yourself space to do the things you love and enjoy. We also speak about becoming an expert at anything; we must have over 10K hours of practice (from the book Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell). More about our guest: Courtney McKenna is a Los Angeles-based Artist and Marketer on a mission to help society shift into a healthier and happier collective. Courtney found music as a tool to help her cope with an unstable alcoholic father.Courtney's focus is on building her music business. Courtney is a new member of the Recording Academy. Joined by her backing band Sweet Myths, Courtney has been producing a new southwest-inspired rock EP due summer of 2023. In 2022 Courtney released three new rock singles and two music videos surrounding the topic of addiction and mental health.Connect with Courtney here https://linktr.ee/courtneymckennaSupport the showThank you for listening to our podcast.
