Man alive, this one we got weird with. Partially it's because we recorded so late, but we have a wide ranging and in depth set of conversations on neglected games, returning to older designs, and some real surprises had within. There are a number of moments that we caught each other by surprise and if you like hearing us disagree, then definitely tune into the Table/Shelf/Trade this time around. --- This episode's segments: 00:00:00 - Intro 00:01:21 - What's Been on the Table 00:06:55 - Topic of the Week: Neglected Games 00:25:16 - Why Did I Play That: El Grande 00:33:54 - Table / Shelf / Trade 01:00:39 - Rotating: HVAC 01:12:09 - Contact Info / Sponsors 01:13:33 - Outro --- Notes! 1) When we use the word "clean" in reference to board games, we're talking about how the rulesets for whatever game don't have unneeded rules or mechanisms or other faff. It's very easy to grasp what they're doing, get right into the play, and not feel like you've missed something because a rule was forgotten or obtuse or similar. 2) Mark made an error! When talking about Azul, he said Starry Night Sky and he MEANT to say Penny Black. Whomp whomp. 3) Apologies for leaving in all of Scott's flabbergasted noises and such during the beginning of HVAC, but you should have seen the way he was physically reacting at the time too. It felt right to leave it all in. 4) Since we got distracted with talking about the surrounding parts of Dungeon Roll, we failed to actually explain the game. It's a fairly straightfoward fantasy themed push your luck game. On your turn you'll roll a handful of D6 to represent your adventuring party and the enemies they're facing. You'll roll more enemies the further you progress into the dungeon and consequently earn more experience and loot as you go. You try and keep going as long as you possible can before either your party dice are exhausted and you lose everything or you choose to retire for the run and head back to the surface. You have three total runs per game, but you can choose to play as many runs as you really wish. --- You can email us at boardallthetimegaming@gmail.com. In this series opener, presenter Tom Barrow pays a visit to his home town of Northwich in Cheshire and investigates some of the strange and rather scary goings-on at his local Wetherspoons pub; The Penny Black. This grand 19th century black & white timbered building has gathered a certain reputation amongst the townsfolk, with rumours abound that this former post office is very haunted indeed. Throughout this investigation staff members come forward and recall their first-hand terrifying experiences, including the reveal of a highly unconventional haunted location within the pub …. the women's toilets! Millions of people around the world collect, preserve, and trade or sell postage stamps; the hobby, or investment, is known as, philately. The first stamp forgeries began to show up, well, when the first stamps showed up. The Penny Black, the world's first adhesive stamp, was issued in 1840, and the world's first forged stamps followed later that year. Stamp collecting has been called, quote, "the hobby of kings and the king of hobbies." And for a time in the early 20th century, a man named Jean de Sperati was king.

To gardeners, spring is the signal of something big to come. It kicks off our season. For the next several months we will primp and preen our beds to maximize their beauty and relish in their good looks. But as all our plants start waking up in April and early May, it can be hard to really focus on the “design” elements. Many of us are often just happy to see any signs of life, never mind if those newly emerging plants look good together. That's why today we're focusing on plant combinations (of two, three, or perhaps even four) that look incredible in spring when grouped together. We're kicking off the new year with something we've never done before – so do let me know what you think of this new format. There are 3 new pieces of eCommerce Marketing tech I've been super impressed with over the last few months, and which help with the key marketing areas you should be improving to ride what's going to be a rocky year.So I thought I'd do an episode where we shine a light on each of them so you can work out if you should be bringing them into your marketing mix…I've got a team member from each joining me to tell us why it's great tech, how it can help you, who it works best for, what it could do for you, and (of course) how much it costs.A common thread through all 3 is that they can help you grow sales by improving key marketing channels, AND saving you time.Listen now to find out more about:Yoast SEO's Shopify App https://ecmp.info/yoast Nibble the negotiation chatbot https://ecmp.info/nibble Penny Black's parcel personalisation powers. https://ecmp.info/pennyblackCreate a free (or paid) Sendcloud account and get £50 free shipping for listening >> https://ecmp.info/sendcloud Yoast SEO, available on Shopify and WordPress for WooCommerce >> https://ecmp.info/yoast Find out more about Treyd at https://www.treyd.io/masterplan Get all the links and resources we mention & join our email list at eCommerceMasterPlan.comLove the show? Killer Dwarfs is a Canadian hard rock band that formed in late 1981 in Oshawa, Ontario, and enjoyed success in their native Canada in the 1980s. The band is known for its offbeat sense of humour and was nominated for two Juno Awards during its career. Killer Dwarfs were sometimes compared to NWOBHM acts such as Iron Maiden and Saxon. Before The Killer Dwarfs formed, the band consisted of Darrell Millar, Bryce Trewin, and Ange Fodero in a group called Sphinx. After Sphinx, Russ Graham entered the picture and they became the Killer Dwarfs. The original line-up consisted of Russ Graham (vocals) and Darrell Millar (drums), along with Bryce Trewin (guitar) and Ange Fodero (bass).Trewin and Fodero left the band shortly afterward and were replaced by guitarist Mike Hall and bassist Ron Mayer. This line-up released the band's breakthrough 1986 album Stand Tall, followed by Big Deal in 1988 and Dirty Weapons in 1990. The band received much recognition in Canada and the United States during the 80's, and its videos were in regular rotation at MuchMusic & MTV. Gerry Finn replaced Hall in 1992, and the album Method to the Madness was released later that year. The band toured for several years but then parted ways. During the mid-to-late 1990s, the band members pursued other projects. Graham formed a band called Penny Black, and Hall and Finn both became members of the Canadian metal band Helix. Millar went on to drum for the southern rock band Laidlaw before forming his own Bon Scott era AC/DC tribute band Autobon, which went on to become Automan.ca, which provided Millar with a vehicle for recording original material. Mayer became a businessman and moved to the U.S. In 2001, however, the line-up of Graham, Millar, Hall and Mayer reunited to tour across North America. Recordings from these shows make up the live album Reunion of Scribes: Live 2001.'. The band again went on hiatus until 2013, when Graham, Millar, Finn and Mayer released the album Start @ One which had been previously recorded in 1993. Also in 2013.The band has been touring since then, playing high profile festival as well as club and casino gigs and are working on new material which will hopefully culminate in a new album sometime in 2023. Darrell Millar is also an author with two books currently under his resume and part two of his autobiography is due in 2023 as well.
For episode 20, my guest is Hamish Duncan. At 16, he became a professional snowboarder but at 22 he broke his back forcing him to rethink his life. After finding a love of storytelling and brand identity design, Hamish eventually set up Penny Black that transforms digital products that move businesses, people and planet forward. What I love about this episode is the power of being a generalist. Hamish' attributes some of his success is to do with knowing a little bit about a lot of things but a real depth of knowledge about business needs. Hamish has let all these different interests - photography, wildlife, snowboarding - inspire his design aesthetic and the clients he attracts.Don't be a clone is Hamish' advice - make sure you don't squash your general interests because it is what makes you truly distinct!CONNECT WITH HAMISH
A marketers job is so much more than social media. But we've got a bit lost, we've forgotten there are marketing opportunities at EVERY touchpoint. This week, on The Marketing Hustle, we chatted to Doug Franklin, Founder of Penny Black. Doug's pretty much pulled a whole new digital marketing channel out the hat. The headline from our chat is that the packaging has just got high tech. Realising that personalised digital marketing didn't need to end the moment a customer makes a purchase, Doug set about creating Penny Black which brings digital personalisation all the way into the hands of the consumer via on-brand, personalised and great-quality inserts. (This is a sponsored episode. At Copy Club we have a select number of partners. If you see us bigging them up, it's because we really do believe they offer big value, but they also did kindly pay us which helps us to continue to look after y'all.)

Adam Pearce is the co-founder and CEO of Blend Commerce, the eCommerce Customer Experience Agency. Adam and his team have worked with over 200 Shopify retailers to help them provide memorable customer experiences that drive growth in revenue and profit. Here's what we covered on the episode: Adam's Start With Shopify I share how Adam and I met and that he's on the show to talk about designing sign-up experiences that sell and add value to customers and brands Adam shares what he thought life would be like after college and the different types of jobs he had While working for an education app company, Adam's brother-in-law approached him about a new Canadian app called Shopify that he was going to start developing on Because Adam had experience marketing for app companies, his brother-in-law thought maybe they could do something together Adam admits that he didn't think Shopify would work out but has never been happier to be wrong 5 years ago, Adam, his business partner, and his brother-in-law started an agency that started doing eCommerce sites for small companies The importance of customer experience has been amplified, and companies realize that it will drive profit for them Adam talks about moving from consulting to teaching and says after a few years of teaching; he realized how difficult it was Adam shares that running a company is easier than teaching was and what you should think about when deciding to switch careers or companies The beginning of their agency was crazy, and they realized they needed to niche down How Shopify was a completely different company from when they started to what it is now - as Shopify has changed, they've had to adapt When looking at eCommerce sites, Shopify is only 2nd to Amazon The initial challenge of the agency Adam shares was picking a niche that was going to be enjoyable and is something that the market and industry wanted A typical client profile for their agency would be someone who has been doing business for 2-3 years, 3 million dollars a year in revenue, and uses Shopify as their main channel for driving revenue. A few years ago, Shopify was about getting someone to make an initial purchase – now, it's more about the customer and thinking about how we can get them to come back Tracking Customer Lifetime Value + Creating a Unique Customer Experience For Adam, the concept of just having a website to sell is going away because so many different social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook offer eCommerce for customers to purchase on their app Business owners and companies need to know that consumers will want to interact and buy from you on multiple different channels, in multiple different ways – so only having one way for consumers to buy isn't ideal When clients come to Adam with a problem, he first looks at the data to identify if that is the true problem they are having or if it's actually something else Adam and his team focus on CLV (Customer Lifetime Value) and look at metrics like average revenue per customer, average order value, and doing calculations to determine the real CLV and the projected CLV Instead of just looking at conversion rates, you need to consider how profitable each customer for your company is based on what they're going to buy, how much it costs to provide what they're going to buy, and how much it costs to acquire them When it comes to a good conversion rate, Adam says it depends on the industry, product, and quality – he gives an example of two clients who sell similar products but have very different conversion rates because they have different price points and target demographics Some companies offer industry data and benchmark tracking reports like Klaviyo, which gives you a better idea of what your conversion rate should be so you can change things in your business if needed Adam feels most agencies do not do a great job with customer experience because everyone involved, the designer, copywriter, developer, etc., are working for themselves and not together for the user to create an excellent customer experience I love that Adam focuses on the customer experience because I feel another thing that has been lost is the onboarding and offboarding processes When you get a client committed to a contract or get paid at a physical store, Adam explains that as business owners, that's a winning point, but for the customer, that winning point hasn't started yet – your job is to make them feel great about their purchase Blend Commerce Offerings + New Ecommerce Trends/Apps Adam explains the 2 ways clients work with their agency 1) through their Customer Value Optimization Program and 2) on their email marketing through Klaviyo What's different about their agency Adam says, is that they understand at times, you will need to dip more into the design side or the marketing side than others Before a customer even comes across your brand until they make their last purchase – they look at all the interaction points that aren't great for your brand so far or don't exist so they can increase the customer lifetime value Adam shares that they have been partnered with Klaviyo for the last 4 ½ years – and when they work with clients in that capacity, they look at where money is being left on the table through their email marketing and help clients increase revenue The agency focuses on website design, development, and Klaviyo email marketing – Adam says when it comes to social media, paid, or SEO, they have a couple of partner agencies who they refer their clients to What has been working for eCommerce product and service brands is using onsite quizzes – Adam gives a client example where they have a button on their site that people can click if they aren't sure where to start, and it walks them through a couple of questions and asks them about their taste to better recommend products and create a personalized experience Adam says that quizzes have good conversion rates, but even if a person doesn't convert from your onsite quiz, you have now captured a lot of information about that person – all that data can be used in Klaviyo for your email marketing to personalize responses If you search for eCommerce quizzes, you will be flooded with information because it does work as a sign-up and conversion tool In Adam's opinion, pop-ups that still work are ones for products with low average pay for the brand, but because everyone uses pop-ups in the same places, it can be overwhelming to consumers if they are jumping from brand to brand When you're offering pop-ups for large discounts, you have to ask yourself if that is attracting customers that will keep coming back – Adam suggests being smarter with pop-ups by asking one simple question instead and gives an example of how this would benefit you as a brand Adam says when they ask questions in their pop-ups, they like to build anticipation and then ask for the consumer's email at the end to share their results If Adam could go back 5 years ago, he would tell himself not to judge a book by its cover and what he means by that is, as an agency, they used to judge the way a potential client approached them and their initial site – but you can never know how good or bad a business is without talking to the business owner Adam shares some apps that are unique and work well from a customer experience point of view – one is VideoEyes which crawls YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, etc. for videos that mention your products that you might not know about and bring them back to your Shopify store – it also allows you to grab any video you've made and create a call to action so people can buy and checkout from the video Another app Adam recommends is Penny Black which allows you to personalize your packaging based on data from a customer To learn more about Adam's agency, you can go to the Blend Commerce Website, and you can connect with Adam on LinkedIn Links mentioned: Blend Commerce Shopify Klaviyo Penny Black Connect with Adam on LinkedIn Like what you heard? Welcome to July 1st, 2022 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate special deliveries come rain or shine. The United States issued its first postage stamps on July 1, 1847. They were not, however, the first of their kind. In the United Kingdom, the Penny Black stamp attempted to fix a broken system. Before then, mail recipients were good at dodging payment for this service. Here in America, a letter could be mailed without prepayment until 1855. Despite new regulations, people continued to take advantage of a system that charged only 15 cents for an 11-pound package. The strangest of these was a small baby that was delivered to his grandmother who lived a few miles away. Even the stork couldn't compete with those prices! On National U.S. Postage Stamp Day celebrate a valuable service that still delivers come rain or shine. “Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.” Everyone knows this is the motto for the United States Postal Service. Except…it isn't. The Postal Service doesn't actually have a motto. So where did this well-known phrase come from? It was written by Herodotus around 500 BCE to describe the postal carriers of his time. When the New York City Post Office opened in 1914, one of the designers liked the quote and had it engraved into the cornerstone. Today is National Postal Worker Day, when we celebrate the men and women who make sure all our letters and packages find their way to us. Except for the bills. We don't mind if those get lost. I'm Anna Devere and I'm Marlo Anderson. Thanks for joining us as we Celebrate Every Day! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

It's hard to imagine a letter without a stamp, or at least it's hard to imagine a letter being delivered without a stamp, but before 1840, stamps were not required to get a letter to its destination. Read here

Produced by Alex Greer and directed by Joe Saunders, THE PENNY BLACK is a documentary that sounds like it was written by the best of mystery writers. When Will is handed a mysterious package from his neighbour and asked to watch it, he never imagined that it would contain a million-dollar stamp collection. As Will searches for the truth about the package, so too does the film question whether or not he's as innocent as they once thought. In this 1on1, we speak to Greer and Saunders about what we value, what they were thinking throughout the process and what they think they would've done in the same situation.

Will is the son of a con man, so when a million dollar stamp collection is left in his possesion by a neighbor with a mysterious background, it would seem that the ending to this story would be pretty cut and dry. NOPE! The Penny Black is a true life documentary that follows Wiill over the course of six years as he follows his often spinning moral compass when it comes to the right thing to do with this stamp collection.
