Kill Holiday, formed by members of San Diego hardcore band Unbroken, made a surprising shift from aggressive post-hardcore to dreamy shoegaze with their 1999 album Somewhere Between the Wrong and the Right. Released on Revelation Records, the album channels British influences like Ride and The Stone Roses, with shimmering guitars and laid-back, melancholic melodies. Despite its shoegaze and Britpop sound, the album resonates with the emotional core of the emo genre, more in feeling rather than form, standing out as a reflective, genre-crossing record from a label known for hardcore. On episode of 165 of the Hardcore Archive Podcast, Greg is joined by Michael "Popeye" Vogelsang of Calling Hours and Farside. Greg and Popeye discuss his introduce to hardcore in the 1980s, experiences he had attending hardcore shows in Orange County, and the influence early California hardcore bands like Hard Stance had on him. The discussion also includes how Farside came together, notable shows that the band played, other notable bands that Farside shared members with, and how the band came to be affiliated with Revelation Records. The conversation takes a detour from hardcore to discuss Popeye's work doing voice over work, and his career as a voice actor. Fun fact: if you have ever played through The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim or Fallout 4, you are already familiar with his voice work. Greg and Popeye shift back to discussing hardcore, and we hear about Popeye's move from California to Pennsylvania, how Calling Hours came together, notable shows Calling Hours has played in recent months, and a tour of Europe Calling Hours is currently on with @BeWellHC. This is great episode for fans of late 80s and early 90s hardcore, and for those of us who love classic @RevelationRecords bands, and confused fans of the Gary Larson comic who came to the wrong place. This episode features two tracks after the credits from up and coming Rochester, NY hardcore bands. The first track is "The Squirming Mass of Teeth and Hair" by Debatably Stable. Debatably Stable will appeal to fans of post-hardcore bands like At the Drive In and Refused. The second track is "Overdose" by Deep Disdain. Deep Disdain will appeal to fans of beatdown and heavy hardcore. Keith sits down with Popeye Vogelsang to discuss moving from Los Angeles to Pennsylvania, adjusting to life in the northeast, the formation of Calling Hours, working with Brian McTernan to demo and record the debut LP "Say Less" for Revelation Records and the band's creative process. We also discuss Farside, Popeye's first tryout for the band, how Walter Schreifels connected them with Don Fury to record their first 7", their short-lived ex guitarist Zach De La Rocha, their final LP "The Monroe Doctrine", recording the record, stories behind some of the songs and more.
Of the music that's been highlighted on this show, few voices have been more influential than that of Popeye Vogelsang. After several years away, he's back behind the microphone with his new band, Calling Hours. Their album "Say Less" is currently streaming everywhere and available courtesy of Revelation Records now. A true album of the year contender. Enjoy!
Garrett Rothman started Art Monk Construction with a friend back in the 90s to release some amazing records. I was obsessed with some of their releases including Seven Storey Mountain and Kerosene 454. Garrett was also in some amazing bands like Junction and Don't Sleep. His most recent project Calling Hours has a new album out now on Revelation Records. Garrett has some amazing stories about his time in bands, running the label, and his connection to DC. Enjoy! Episode 131 Tony Rettman . Author of NYHC and other books Growing up the kid brother of the City Gardens DJ is a sick way to walk into hardcore punk. His first show he wasn't out of grade school. Over time he would go from writing zines to writing freelance articles for multiple magazines. Eventually he would work with Revelation Records on Why be something you're not, focusing on the early Detroit scene. Later he would work on the collection of interviews for NYHC - 1980-1990 which would end up being released on Bazillion Points. His latest was Straight Edge - A Clear headed Hardcore Punk history also on Bazillion points. This was a fun one with alot of insight in how the writing side works on articles, zines and books. Sammy Ciaramitaro, vocalist of Santa Cruz hardcore band Drain (and drummer of the now-defunct Gulch), joins us on the BrooklynVegan podcast in anticipation of Drain's sophomore album and first for Epitaph, Living Proof. It's a great album that expands upon the hardcore punk energy, thrash/groove metal riffs, and California warmth of their 2020 debut LP on Revelation Records, California Cursed, widening the band's sonic palette to include things like a rap interlude and a clean-vocal Descendents cover, and some of Sammy's most impactful lyricism yet. On the podcast, we dig into the new album and talk about Drain's upcoming tour with Drug Church, Gel, MSPAINT, Magnitude, Restraining Order, Combust, Gumm, Torena, and Outta Pocket (varying by date). We also discuss the hardcore scene pre-pandemic vs post-pandemic, being a hardcore band in the post-Turnstile era, gatekeeping, some of Sammy's formative experiences in hardcore, his time in Gulch, his love of the Grateful Dead and Drain's multiple homages to that band, and much more. And at the end, Sammy names five current hardcore bands he thinks any new hardcore fan should know. -- The BrooklynVegan Show is brought to you in part by DistroKid, a service for musicians that allows you to easily upload your music to all major streaming platforms. (*both laugh*) is somehow up to 58 episodes, but we're still having fun and some of y'all seem to still enjoy it, so we'll keep rolling! This episode finds us catching up with the great Brian McTernan again. McTernan was the guest on Episode 15 a couple of years ago, in the lead-up to the debut Be Well album, "The Weight And The Cost." Next Friday (May 20th if you're reading this in the future), Be Well is back with a brand new album! It's a six-song EP called "Hello Sun," and it finds the band expanding the sonic palette that I thought they had perfected on "TW&TC." It's really great and personal and haunting and melodic and everything you want form a post-hardcore record (or whatever, I don't get labels) and more. We talk an awful lot about the new album and the musical directions. In a bit of unexpected synchronicity, May is also Mental Health Awareness Month, and Brian is no stranger to talking about his struggles with depression and alcohol use and more, as is pretty obvious if you listened to the last album. We talk about that, but about how the new album, while "dark," isn't dark for dark's sake; it's written from the perspective of someone who has moved through the darkness and worked towards a newfound light. Thus, "Hello Sun." We also talked a lot about the newest Hot Water Music Record, "Feel The Void." After having worked on "A Flight And A Crash" and "Caution" and "The New What Next" roughly two decades ago, McTernan found himself both reconnected with the now five-piece band during the early days of the Covid lockdown and at the helm of "Feel The Void." It was a fascinating time in that band's history and produced an important album, and McTernan's work (and point of view) are invaluable. And we talk a lot about their upcoming tour dates, and there are a TON of them on both sides of the Atlantic, including a lengthy run with New Found Glory and a UK/EU jaunt with Hot Water Music and Samiam. Spinning Out (another music podcast) We talk to artists about their favorite albums and go on wild tangents. WELCOME to a preview of one of our Patreon episodes with co-host Sarah Blumenthal. Every week we dig into an album from our past and find out if it still resonates with us. On this episode we talk about Farside's 1999 album, "The Monroe Doctrine." We also talk about joke songs, Revelation Records, comparing everything thing to Dag Nasty and once again, why does Josh hate fun? The band was initially signed to Revelation Records, releasing three albums, and later signed with Warner Bros. in 1996. However, problems within the label caused the band to sit in limbo for five years as the label was re-staffed multiple times. The band was eventually released from their contract and Sense Field won the right to re-record the album they had originally written for Warner Bros. Records. They later broke up in 2004. They reunited for Revelation Records 25 Year Anniversary Show. And played again for Jon Bunch's Tribute concert in 2016. To this day I rock out to Overstand and Outlive The Man on a weekly basis because they are fucking bangers. I was lucky enough to get guitarist Chris Evenson on the Skype and this is what we chat about: Finding their scene The Revelation van Playing shows with harder sounding bands Writing Building Getting mixed by Andy Wallace Overstand's guitar riff Signing to Warner Bros What Save Yourself did to the band Jon joining Further Seems Forever Playing Revelation 25 How they got the singers for the Jon Bunch Tribute concert And a ton more This week's sponsor is Mint 400 Records. Their most notable LPs were U.S. Songs, False Cathedrals, and Song in the Air. 2000's False Cathedrals was a more polished affair than its predecessor, featuring vocal harmonies and more piano than US Songs. It was met with critical acclaim by a broad cross-section of the underground rock community. Shortly after Song in the Air's release, Elliott announced their intention to break up. They completed final tours of Europe and the US, before disbanding in November 2003. We tried getting Kevin on but for some reason, I couldn't hear his audio and we were pressed on time so we had to do the interview without him so sorry Kevin! We had to take a 3-week break between the interview because Chris had parental responsibilities so it picks up in the middle. But I got him on the Skype and this what we chat about: Playing Furnace fest in 2022 Revelation Records 2 members quitting at the same time not playing False Cathedrals the same way live as it was on the recording The Toadies tour debacle What were they like on stage The Humble Beginnings story What would have happened to the band if they had continued The porn house And a ton more Check out my new book The Couples' Checklist for my webcomic dailyBred.
