Send us a text"Get some f***ing perspective!"Mark invites Strangers in Space's benevolent overseer, J.R. Southall to submit his five choices for the Tinsel Tunnel. Their discussion takes in the cultural milieu that led to the decline of Doctor Who, showrunner sectarianism, green goo, how we watch The One Show, and whether the Doctor should always have a British accent. Also: Which book of J.R's is too hot for publishing? Why wasn't Philip Hinchcliffe doing Parkinson? And does Doctor Who really live on Saturdays? In part 2 of our festive special, Ben, Mark and JR Southall return to discuss fan controversy 1970s style, by way of Robert Holmes' The Deadly Assassin. As a controversial moment in Doctor Who history, it's gone on to define how the show's mythology worked going forward. Can the same be said for The Timeless Children? Time will tell, it usually does.Under discussion: Tories being bastards on Gallifrey and in real life, Bernard Horsfall's scabby leg, and why there's no women on Gallifrey. Also: What's more disrespectful? JR chooses the eight items he'd take with him, if he was about to be stranded on a desert planet
NEW TO WHO AND THE ROBOTS OF DEATHOn a desert planet the giant sandminer crawls through the howling sandstorms, harvesting the valuable minerals in the sand.Inside it, Dan and Steven relax in luxury, while most of the work is done by the robots who serve them. Then JR Southall arrives - and the mysterious deaths begin. First a suspect, then a hunted victim, JR must find the hidden killer - or join the other victims of The Robots of Death. The penultimate story of the acclaimed Season 14, this is perhaps the strongest four-parter of the entire Hinchcliffe and Holmes era having placed at number 11 in the DWM 2014 readers' poll. It's a fast-paced story with an overriding Art Decor aesthetic, and an incredible array of classic series imagery including the eponymous Robots of Death in red-eyed killer mode (doing it thirty years before the Ood!).Join Dan and Steven and special guest JR Southall for a story that showcases an imperious Tom Baker as the Doctor, and the wonderful Louise Jameson in only her second story as Leela of the Sevateem. You can hear more of JR on the Blue Box Podcast, which you can find on Facebook here, while JR is also on Twitter here. The cover of the original imprint of the 1979 Target novelisation for THE ROBOTS OF DEATH is by John Geary. It is written by Terrance Dicks and is based on Chris Boucher's 1977 original script.Intro theme by Our Colin (2017). Much love and thanks, Col ❤︎Special thanks to Sarah Tout at Voice Box Media Training.NEXT MONTH: VENGEANCE ON VAROS
The topic of Doctor Who missing episodes has been dormant relatively recently, but a tangent in an interview with producer/director Paul Vanezis, who has aided in the recovery of other previously missing Doctor Who episodes, may raise the profile once again. (Listen to the interview with Steven starting at 30:36; JR Southall joins Steven later to discuss what Paul said). What you are about to hear is the story of a connection, a connection that was made between a television series and a viewer’s life. The You and Who books are the story of that connection, as told by the people who watch the programmes that make us come alive. Chiefly, of course, Doctor Who. This podcast will relate some of the stories from those books… and beyond. In this episode: Choices by Michael Gilroy-Sinclair Reach out and touch me: Doctor Who and the Carnival of Monsters by Christopher Bryant With an intermission featuring Rob Irwin talking to JR Southall. The Blue Box Podcast recently celebrated a milestone in its 250th episode with a four-hour-plus episode, comprising "mini episodes" of many Doctor Who podcasts from around the globe. As long-time listeners of the podcast we (that is, Rob & Dave), provided such a mini episode for the special, based on our typical Doctor Who Show chats, which is also included for your pleasure here. [The chat is all about how Doctor Who and Doctor Who fandom has differed in Australia, versus other countries, over the years. It seems appropriate for an internationally diverse episode...] One thing we noticed, however, is that while we stuck to the Blue Box Podcast's instructions and deliberately didn't reference its milestone or otherwise talk about it at all, not every podcast followed suit. So Rob decided he wanted to say congratulations too, but with Dave missing from the other end of the Skype line he struggled a bit... until deciding to call the Blue Box Podcast supremo himself, JR Southall. What happened next? You'll have to listen to find out!
David Kitchen's back! Well, if you heard our '21 Replacements For 12' episode on February 1, you'd know that, but this is the first time in 2017 that Rob sits down to discuss Doctor Who with Dave on the flagship edition of the show. During today's episode, they cover: – Listener emails from John Hole and 'Kazza' which cover Children of the Dogstar; Chocky; casting a female Doctor; and whether Rob and Dave are 50th Anniversary deniers. - Errors Department: paper with the corners cut off to make it look futuristic is a Battlestar Galactica thing, not a Babylon 5 thing. Rob's mistake. - What Doctor Who music has stood out for you, and why? Nu Who or classic series, we want to hear it all from you. No pun intended. Email us -- hello@theDWshow.net -- or tell us on our Facebook or Twitter. - Doctor Who Series 10: we have a release date; Missy's return and will this be her final hurrah?; the Ice Warriors return with an all-new version but will this be a great or dodgy Gatiss episode; Dave's Pearl Mackie conspiracy theory. - Doctor Who Series 11: production has been pushed back, so we won't see it in April of 2018 as many had been expecting after we 'reset the clock' this year. - Doctor Who news: Vale, John Hurt; Big Finish sale perhaps prefaces the retirement of CDs 51 - 125 as physical media and Big Finish chat in general - what are Rob and Dave buying and why?; the essay book Hating to Love (which we interviewed JR Southall about on an earlier episode), has been released - and Dave and Rob each have a copy; future Watching Books releases. - Dave's adventures in the UK: meeting the Blue Box Podcast & Diddly Dum podcast crews; are podcasts replacing Doctor Who clubs in the modern day?; visiting Doctor Who locations in the UK. - Totally Tasteless: The Life of John Nathan-Turner by Richard Marson. - What are we watching beyond Doctor Who? Dave cites The Goldbergs and Riverdale while Rob opts for the Santa Clarita Diet. - Some more quick thoughts on Series 10 of Doctor Who before we go.
Rob discusses Doctor Who with super-sub Paul Scoones (author, The Comic Strip Companion), filling in for David while he's away in the United Kingdom. Along the way, they cover: - Listener emails from JR Southall and Richard Nolan - "Alternative facts" and a quote from 1977 Doctor Who - 18 years since Paul helped find The Lion episode of The Crusade - Power of the Daleks; discussion of the animated story and colour version - Discussion of the omni-rumour and missing episodes in general - Doctor Who comics - lengthy discussion following DWM reprint of a 1970s strip - Doctor Who Magazine 508 - The 70s issue including Terrance Dicks and Katy Manning - Happy 83rd birthday to Tom Baker! - Star Wars: The Last Jedi, discussion of the title and Star Wars in general - Star Wars: Rebels Blu-ray rant and discussion of retail pricing in NZ - Part two of Richard Nolan's email and discussion of his top five TV series: 1) Gigantor. 2) Battle of the Planets. 3) Monkey. 4) Sweet and Sour. 5) The Young Ones. - Paul raises Under the Mountain, a 1979 children's book by NZ writer Maurice Gee, adapted into a 1981 television miniseries and a 2009 film. Rob remembers the miniseries warmly from childhood and shares an anecdote about doing a book report on it. - Do hang around after the credits, won't you? And, as always, you can reach the team at: hello@theDWshow.net DAVID KITCHEN WILL RETURN IN THE DOCTOR WHO SHOW 2.2
Rob chats to JR Southall about the new Doctor Who essay book, Hating to Love. What's it all about? Tune in and find out... Buy the book from: http://watchingbooks.weebly.com https://www.facebook.com/watchingbooks And, as always, you can write to us: hello@theDWshow.net — Are the worst Doctor Who stories really as bad as their reputations suggest they are? It's time to don your breathing apparatus, roll up your sleeves and join a team of ten intrepid - and slightly irrational - authors, as they head to the bottom of the barrel in a quest to uncover the worst the series has to offer, and to find out if those apples really are as rotten as they're painted. On the way, we'll meet the paving slab with the inappropriate love life, the pantomime horse that leaked green stuff all over Janet Fielding's dress, and the Dalek mutant with the phallic mane... Edited by J.R. Southall with Jon Arnold, Matt Barber, Christopher Bryant, Michael S. Collins, John Davies, Tony Green, Jim Hall, Brendan Jones, and Beth Ward.
Please join Marc, Bob, Craig and special guest JR Southall for PROGTOR WHO: Where WHO and PROG collide... In this episode we look back at the 1983 20th anniversary special THE FIVE DOCTORS, discuss the latest news and Bob, Craig and JR all have a go at writing a rhyme for the show's intro... We also play 3 great songs from THE SOUND OF CONTACT, PETER GABRIEL and a mystery song choice from JR.... Please enjoy the show and, if you do, leave us feedback on i-tunes... Thank you for listening... :)

The Miniscope madness continues this week with an examination of the Innes Lloyd era, with a little help from JR Southall of Starburst Magazine and the Blue Box Podcast, and Deborah Watling, AKA Victoria Waterfield. But before "regeneration and bases under siege" (and a whole lot more) fall under the hawk-like gaze of the RFS crew and their guests, news of DVD releases, theatrical showings of "The Day of the Doctor" and flagrant disregard for the term "rels" were the order of the day. Enjoy, and a quick note: all rel-related pedantry should be aimed squarely at Warren, who will dismiss said pedantry out of hand. Check out the show notes at http://www.radiofreeskaro.com
